Groningen has the advantage on starting fires because of the Special Dutch commanders improved Demo Expert skill (whatever it's called nowadays). It's only an extra 0.5% but with the volume of shells you put out it's a significant DPM bonus.
It's really down to +0.5% fire chance or +0.05% AR boost. Overall at 50% hp Friesland will have a .25% faster reload than gron at 50% hp, all in all its up to the player. I'd take either but since I have groningen and not Friesland I don't really have a choice in the matter lol. Both improved skills are incredible for the ship's in different ways and to me are equally as useful.
In tier 7mm ,yes this ship is pretty annoying to deal with. However in tier 9-10mm it's pretty much a moving target practice. Shell speed i hilariously bad, hp pool, concealment, maneuverability and survivability over all also pretty much a joke. It has amazing reload but you can basically only utilize it IF you are in cover, have spotting and people push in to you. If spotting dd:s suicide or enemy team just doesn't push in (which to be fair, really is the more common meta of the game today) Friesland is a pure migraine to play. Honestly I've had more success play gunboating with the Swedish line the Friesland which allways have been and probably allways will be a gimmick ship. If the match plays in the favor of that gimmick well, fine. Mostly it doesn't.
I recommend using Klaas Janssen as captain because Pyrotechnician skill has +1.5% fire chance. (It was free from mission but you can get in the armory)
Dude thank you for that: I've got him in my reserve and didn't realize it lol. Been dreading bringing up a new commander for Groningen (when I get it). A 10 point commander is the beginnings of a commander being adequate. I get about 1/3rd of my caused damage via fires: didn't know he added a 1.5% fire chance: now I'm jazzed! Thank You! BTW: Pan Euro Jerzy Swirsky is also a beneficial (worth it) commander for his 25% increase in Adrenalin rush as well as his other attributes. 0.05 is indeed 25% of .20 I don't think people see that when they see the "seemingly puny" 0.05% increase number. @@robertshaver4432 I dont recommend Jerzy Ṡwirski for non torp boat. If you put on Friesland you are wasting the best skill for the captain which is the torp reload. Jerzy Ṡwirski the best in the Halland because Halland has torps and good AA so you can use all of her unique skills. The enhanced Adrenaline Rush and the Torpedo Armament Expert is the best combo for Halland because of the fast reloading torps getting more faster so you can spam every 50 sec almost. I totally forgote Jerzy is also good for Smaland. Smaland has gun dpm so enhanced Adrenaline rush can help it. And also has torps.
@@DeteCT0R I agree: I've Jerzy in my much played Oland. Oster and Halland don't need him as much for tier ten games and they get too much respect from CVs. @@DeteCT0R A pure gun build on jerzy works well on Friesland, Småland and Ragnar. I had him on halland with a torp build at first but the boosted adrenalin rush skill makes more of a difference than one would expect.
@@Julian-gj8si Its works well im not saying its bad for thoose ships for use Jerzy but you still get the more if you have torps on your boat. If you are using competitive then use other than a normal captain is already enough. Smaland and Friesland already over DPM most of the ship in their tier. Ragnar has lover DPM but has bigger gun for compensation. Other then free feel to use everyone where want its their captain not mine.
I bought mine because I love gun boats like the Russian DDs use to be and love it. I went with the long range and gun reload build and got the reload down to 1.7 seconds and range of 17 and half kilometers. I average 100k damage per round easily and use it as a free XP ship to grind some tier 9 lines. Love the ship so far and great money making ship too!
i kinda agree and disagree. It can be a fun ship to play, but I would not recommend the Groningen for learning dd gameplay. It is a very awkward ship to play due to the bad concealment, the fact that german dds out-hydro you, the clumsy handling of the ship and the very light shells, that have the worst air dragg i know in the game making it not a lot of fun to shoot at anything that moves over 10km. I d say it is a unique dd and there for worth a try, but i wont teach you a lot regarding general dd play that any other dd cant teach you. The only similar dd i know would be the Vampyre II. The way i see these two is, that they are suposed to be cap contesters/anti-dd destroyers (not a dd hunter though due to the bad top speed) , but the ultra radar heavy meta + the lack of a heal makes the knife fighting a tad iffy, since you have to pick ur fights extra carefull. When the mm is on your side though, it is a ton of fun. It plays a bit like a mini-smollensk: can be fun and very strong, but also can be counter-played out of the amtch easy by players, who know what they are doing.
Dont forget to mention that both turrets can rotate 360 degrees. This is extremely valuable as it allows you to react to anything that suddenly shows up, no matter what side of your ship they appear on.
If I'm just playing at a regular pace without really piling on the flags (maybe just running an FXP camo and a Papa Papa flag mostly) it takes me about 5 to 6 months or so to bank the million XP needed for a ship like this. I cant complain. This year starting in January I picked up Alaska (I got that grind done in less than 3 months starting at around 250K FXP), Nelson, Agir and Groningen. A couple of more cycles and I will have all the FXP ships available unless they add something. I'll probably bank it for research bureau resets or to more of my commanders to 21 points at that point.
Just gonna note while EU dds and groningen are essentially no fly zones for CVs you still need to play smart, going to use halland as an example but all the t9/10 dds in that tree/groningen are essentially the same in this. I've seen hallands with AA permanently on - you get spotted and die, long range AA is not as scary as close up. Hallands with AA off who don't switch it on - well this is how I kill hallands in lexington. Enough said there, its like a yammy refusing to snipe, it's one of your strengths and needs proper use. Those who pop DFAA with planes at max range - your AA goes red when you do, any CV with a brain turns round or recalls and you wasted that AA. Those who make AA traps - these guys are the ones you want to be, no AA until spotted (about 2.5k iirc, in year range anyway) , DFAA when you know planes have a good amount of time before they can escape, basically when spotted activate AA and hit DFAA, when they pass activate priority sector - using that order makes your instant AA damage from priority get the DFAA boost and maximises the time planes spend in your AA aura. You still want to avoid CVs where possible, but can be a damn menace to them when needed.
I got this ages ago and loved it for a while, recently started playing it again now I’m wayyyy better than I used to be and it’s such a good ship. Used it to train my swerski for halland :)
6:56 did you know that you can click one time to switch to ap or he and after you fire it will automatically switch without delay? I am using this a lot in bb to save that second or two
With the dpm of these DDs, I wouldn't think the slight delay in switching shell types would be a concern. If it really is, hit the 2 key once and your next Salvo is AP without missing a beat. Also, what are your thoughts about taking Survivability Expert in light of recent information on its effect on saturation?
Why would I take this ship insead of Kitakaze - ok Hydro is great but for spam Kita is so much better, you can actually use it on +14km for shooting bcs of great 100mm - 10000m/s, it have 6+6 torps 22k torps and it is a lot faster than this..
Nice personally I got the molotov from the free ones but i have thr groningen bought it like a month ago in my opinion it is better to train a Dutch commander and since the pan euro line is torp focused
Primary reason I won't get Grony anytime soon - I don't have any NL captain nor I have any interest in grinding NL cruisers. Friesland/Smaland are sadly missed opportunity to get them.
I got both Friesland and Groningen, simply because of the fact that I love playing Friesland in the first place, so having another clone with a different isn't a bad thing for me
@@Legendendear Yea but there's a captain for the durch ships that has the improved talent that increases fire chance... I don't really know by how much, but it sould be 1,5% or so... And Friesland has really high firechance already, so setting 15+ fires per match in Groningen isn't rare at all.
@@scotthill2865 ditto, got both so I can have the meme max range / max fire chance artillery build and a competitive build on the Friesland. The artillery build gets you ~ 16km range with near vertical shell drop at extreme ranges, nobody can hide from your death of a thousand cuts and burns. It's totally hilarious, burning down a radar CA hiding behind an island to surprise the DDs in cap. They have radar, you have reconnaissance by 🔥. So many people get frustrated with being stung to death, never being able to have DC, while "undetected" they will either move out of range, or charge into the open to get farmed. It's like having your own, personal, eye of Sauron. Bonus points for typing, "I SEEEE Youuuuu..." in all chat.
I'm a cruiser main and so I got Agir with FXP a few weeks ago. My next FXP ship will be Groningen. I don't really like the idea of a DD with no torps, but in Marceau I don't use them all that much, so it should be fine. ;) When I was little we had a Friesland class destroyer in Amsterdam, at the Maritime History Museum. It may well have been the ship that first sparked my interest in all things Navy.
I just got the Groningen after watching this video from a Santa Container. Big thanks Potato Quality! I learned how to play this ship even before using it. Now I just broke my account record, 3k base exp and 135k damage dealt on the first game with only a 10 pt commander. This thing is ridiculously strong and fun to play!
She's fantastic. Love her, but the concealment is somethign you really have to learn to play around. With double concealment it's 6.4, which is trash. So yea, imo Groningen is a support DD mostly, and i usually play her like an annoying cruiser by opening up and ducking behind cover, over and over again. Also kiting away is really good. I'm hoping to get the Ragnar soon, too. Can't wait to slap other DDs i radar with cruiser caliber guns :D
I really don’t know what to the Right now. I got around 550k free xp right now easy stacked up by flags used in clanwar and ranked etc. I’m not a new player at all and i already got some free xp ships BUT i need an advise 1: skip to the chabarowsk for around 600k free xp before it gets removed in January (i dont see the point spending coal on a ship i could get for so many years, especially because marcau is much better) 2: Get 300k more and buy groningen P.S. i already have played gunboats especially the japanese so i dont think this would be a total new experience to me
Since you made this video, WG buffed "Demolition Expert" for this ship (enhanced skill). It has +1.5% HE chance for fire and +15% damager radius against subs... Does that change your mind about your commander build???
Unless I'm mistaken, and I could be, this ship seems inferior to the Kitakaze. Am I wrong? I'm sitting at 1.2mm Free EXP, and looking to either Free EXP my way up a line or buy something outright for Free EXP. I have the Kit, and I love her. Not sure why I need the Gron.
Just my opinion, but I think tier 3 is a better place to start learning how to play gunboats. Personally, I don’t relish players at tier 9 learning how to play them. I love your videos and watch them all! 😊

im playing the exact same build as yours and i strongly disagree on playing those gun boats as regular destroyers and rushing for caps you will find yourself outspotted most of the time especially with the current state of the game where we got like 5.6km dds.your job is utility support and to prevent cruisers and bbs to push or flank your teamates also 2 dds combo is great since you will provide the firepower for your dd teamate while his concealment will help you with the cap and spotting. Overall great dds but highly skill capped IMO.
Its a buff ship...its not tier 9 but 10 that's the truth if u realized that....i dont agree about this policy of WG the result is destroy the balance of game...nice to bully other ships...with a buff ship Groningen...
I also have Friesland and Ive had it since it came out but I think its boring as shit to play. Btw is there a way to trade your Friesland for Groeningen? I heard about it.
I spend my free xp's while ago to Groningen and I get the point of this ship but still haven't learn quite right way to play it. But it is awesome (and nice) ship, even my avg dmg with it is only 60k.
Saving Free XP for this ship: getting near. This vid answered many questions. front and rear 360 MG mounts (Awesome). 5k hydro very nice! US smoke Wow very cool. I'm still bummed though that they took this ship from the Pan Euro line and replaced it with Groningen in the Netherland line. also saving steel for Ragnar but I'll probably never get there. Thanks for the vid and I hope that both Friesland and Groningen are indeed "exactly the same".
I watched this guy’s clip for the first time. After this clip, I searched several his other clips also… But… It seems, this guy want to be the Mr. Jingle. “No his own characteristic” is the best explanation of this guy’s clip. That’s my impression. Please make your own way. :)
Friesland is really fun in legends, 1.4s reload actually decent concealment of 5.4 with my build. The average concealment on T7 is 5.1km. I played it in ranked and it was super fun, after I got the DD I just farmed BBs in my smoke.
Hopefully WG will add a Dutch Destroyer line to better leverage out the Groningen in the same way Friesland can in the Euro DD line. I use the Friesland a lot for Euro DD Naval Battles and, in that sense, the Groningen is still lacking.
I just picked up Groningen a short while ago. Haven't even fitted it out properly yet so I haven't played many matches in it. But I can see that this might be a playstyle that I could really enjoy...
I'm curious to hear your take on the "bug" that reduces survivability when running Survivability Expert on a DD. Don't know if the bug is limited to Kleber or French DDs per se.... but would be interesting to explore. Apparently it messes with the saturation mechanic... in that it takes about 4 or fives times as long for a part of the ship to become saturated, resulting in eating a ton more damage than you would with SE.
hey all , I have not been able to open armory ever since I got the game . I got the game on the 9th of September 2021 . I am completely burned out on camos and flags and hence not able to make much free xp and credits after a battle , I know I can get containers from armory but as I said , not able to open it . Any solutions ? I am using a HP laptop to play the game .
I got both ships, so I can have my normal build, and meme, max range max fire chance, artillery build. You can get ~ 16km range by taking all the range skills and upgrades, with insane rainbow arcs you can bombard ships behind ANY Island. Yes, dispersions is pretty wide - but it's 2 shells every 2 seconds - so many players will get fed up dying the death of a thousand cuts when not detected, they will literally charge out into the open to be farmed. Plus, there's something super troll about bombarding ships across two brothers... If you have both, really really recommend trying the bombardier build for the memes! All range, all fire chance!
Not a PQ, but Hayate is sh*t. It combines the worse from both IJN lines. It gets more guns and less torps than Shima, but less guns and more torps than Harugumo. It has terrible concealment of 6,1 with all skills and modules, with which you cannot do much. I don´t know how many ships you have, but I would use those FXP to regrind a line with 2x the bonus is now, maybe even doing it three times in a row getting you on 4x the bonus (2x+1x+1x) and doing it on Harugumo line would cost you around 2,5mil fxp only (cheapest line to research). Then just collect and buy some specials from RB (ships, legendary modules...). Other option is to get to Khaba and GK (at least fxp it, no need to buy), cause it will go out of research soon. In the end, it you have all the ships you want, go for them and buy them if you like. I just don´t seem them to be played often and similar to Flambass, who tells the Hayate is ... not worth it, my clanmate took it twice to ranked, too, and got his ass handed to him pretty quickly by everyone. Outspotted by Shima, focused down quickly.
I don’t know if I ever noticed it and didn’t take note but in this video , while he’s firing his main ( only ) guns the water gets pushed and recoils away from the after shock of it. That’s actually pretty cool
So today or tomorrow the coupon for the special ship should come around what do you think in the best coal ship in the shop right now? I am confused on what to get because I want a ship that is both good and fun to play since the next coupon isnt coming around for 6 months
Depends hugely on your playstyle and favourite ship type. Also consider the fact that the coupon is both for steel and coal ships, so if you are about to get some steel from ranked/cla wars/dockyard (2000 steel there in the end), you better save you pennies. Also depends if you want to get a ship to earn credits, use in T10 ranked, have fun in random meta or what exactly are you expecting from it. From T10 Ships you have Max Immelmann - strong CV, easy to fit Lutjens on, pretty strong, little gimmicky Yoshino - long range HE spamming cruiser with an option to fire 20 km torps from both sides Moskva - ultimate RU HE spamming cruiser, easy to fit Kuznecov or other light cruiser captain Salem - Des Moines with super heal and shorter range radar. Marceau - superfast French DD, great DPM, bad concealment. Good for captain training of French captains, unstoppable with rpf. Napoli - great pushing IT heavy cruiser, quite tanky, great SAP secondaries. From lower tiers IX Pommern is a good brawler with torps and earns more credits IX Kearsarge - Montana guns, flight deck, ugly as hell, but earns a lot, too. VII Duke of Yorck - good BB with cruiser-like dispersion and improved pen angles. Good in Narai VII Lazo - king of long range HE spam in its tier. III Charleston - if you are looking for low tier fun or a source of "how many hits per battle can I get in US cruiser", this is your pick. Great for Naval battle or for relaxing playstyle. Just slap any captain you wish on it and go wild :)
