Growing potatoes during Zimbabwean winter:
Potato prices at their highest soon after winter, these would have been farmers who have grown the crop successfully through winter, in this article we look at some of the methods small scale farmers can use to protect their crops from frost:
In general, most frost protection is for sensitive horticultural crops, which are grown in the Zimbabwean winter. It is important for farmers in frost-risk areas in Zimbabwe to listen to the weather forecasts and to take precautions. Most growers already know the tentative dates that frost is common in their own areas. However, the meteorological service offers helpful frost prediction and forecasting information. Those methods that involve a lot of investment and require electricity are mainly practised on large commercial farms.
Small farmers practice less expensive protection methods such as:
Site selection of frost-free sites on slopes.
Selection of tolerant cultivars ( these are your dual and processing varieties).
Avoidance of sensitive stages during frost periods.
Winter soil compacting.
Production in protected environments - greenhouses.
Physical barriers.
Cover crop with grass, hessian sacks or paper in the evening.
Sprinkler irrigation.
Burning tyres, grass and cow dung upwind early in the morning.
Fans and other wind-making machines.
Forced harvesting.
Bottles filled with water and placed close to a plant.
End of June - July is when we normally have lower temperatures with minimums of between 0°C and 5°C and ground frost being more pronounced in the most prone areas such as Nyanga, Marondera, Chivhu, Henderson, Gweru and Matobo

Good presentation. But guys stop complicating farming. I am an extremely successful farmer and my farming is very very easy. Purely organic and absolutely no chemical used whatsoever. Very very simple indeed and extremely profitable. Take care and God Bless.

A recent water use efficiency study revealed how different treatments affected water use efficiency during the growing season of a potato crop. The research results showed the superiority of SWRT subsurface membranes that reached 3.46kg m-3 compared to plant fertilizer, animal manure and comparison treatments that gave efficiency of 2.96, 2.66 and 2.34 kg m-3 respectively. The reason for the superiority of the SWRT treatment is attributed to the membranes that maintain optimum moisture content close to field capacity in the root zone and the consumption of water is minimal and yet produces a high yield.

@ammhondaify
@ammhondaify 2 года назад
@@Black.Wolf.Yusmang It depends because there are several factors involved. It depends on the variety suited for your region, your soil type, your soil nutrient content, which season do you plan to grow - irrigation or rain water, mode and cost of your disc process. Your soil content will determine the cost and types of fertilizer needed. If you do these things, you'll definitely see your cost. Do not be discouraged by what I wrote but use it to perfect your game

I know I mentioned soil nutrient content, this is something I know I need to do but have not been good at all on this but this year I definitely will.
