I love how in all this current bourbon madness all the Wild Turkey products have stayed around the same price points and continue to maintain a high level of quality. Russell's Reserve 10, Wild Turkey 101, and Rare Breed are all amazing pours.

Up in Canuck land we pay probably double for the 30 whiskeys, weller, ECSB, 1792, all about $65 - $70 dollars for us, but the turkey 101 is still $34! and the best IMO,non Canadian bang for your buck. Thanks for the video

@@bigusdickus6503 honestly I just stumbled on Wild Turkey because Buffalo Trace was out of stock. Now I have two favorite distilleries! And if both were somehow out I'd gladly grab a Woodford Reserve or Maker's Mark. There are so many good affordable bourbons out there for under $35. I've seen man childs throw a fit in a liquor store because they didn't have what they wanted..Blanton's lol. When they are out of Eagle Rare 10 I grab a Russell's Reserve 10 or Green Spot. No fuss about it. I'm still getting a great bottle.

Guess you have not seen the crazy markup on masters keep one + Russell's 13 ? Seen them going for anywhere between $300.00 - $500.00
@DongHands84
@DongHands84 2 года назад
@@gregmartin1757 I haven't but if bourbon goes over $100 for me I'll default to Yellow Spot, Red Spot, Redbreast 12 Cask Strength, Talisker 10, or Talisker 18. Those to me are better pours and always fairly priced. Honestly one reason I got into bourbon is I needed affordable daily drinkers. Single Pot Still Irish whiskey and Talisker 10/18 add up quick lol.

1792 and Russell's are good choices, I've enjoyed them both. Generally I seem to favor stuff under $30 (casual drink) or over $40 (special drink--I just got myself some Four Roses Small Batch Select for Christmas, excellent) so I don't have anything to suggest for this price range, but I remember my $30 bourbon used to be Elmer T. Fun show as always, Kurt. The David Nichols Reserve (DNR) is a high-rye recipe; they also have the more "storied" wheated recipe version (in the white label), but I agree with you that the DNR is a heckuva fine bourbon for the price. Indeed, it's basically a batched, higher-proof version of the Evan Williams Single Barrel, both being the same classic Heaven Hill mashbill.

I discovered that at tasting we had years ago with some friends at the same time I discovered my first Henry McKenna 10 year old. The HM is way hard to find around here, but I always keep a bottle of Russell's in the cabinet. Oh, and for the Weller SR, I definitely have that on my under $30 list, both because it is the Bourbon that got me started in all this, and until the last few months was not at all allocated in my area (central OK). Good video! I would add the Evan Williams 100-proof Bottled in Bond, because I drink no bourbon or Tennessee Whiskey less than 90-proof. Jack Daniels (Tennessee Whiskey) also makes a 100-proof Bottled in Bond whiskey now that is very good. I haven’t drank JD since they went from 90 to 86-proof in the 80’s. And now they’re 80-proof…same as Jim Beam. If I want watered down whiskey I’ll water it down myself. But the 100-proof JD is very smooth, very good.

I enjoy the EW SiB. I found that it likes to open up after having the bottle opened for a few weeks or so. For a lower proof bourbon, it really carries some nice depth. I am partial to OGD 114 at the price point as well. Pretty spicy, but after that first taste it really settles in. And if I want Turkey, I honestly prefer 101 over RR10 which I find a bit odd tasting with a funk I have not been able to pinpoint whereas 101 I believe drinks much closer to Rare Breed (though RB is a deeper and more viscous pour) and at $20 it’s awfully hard to beat.

Good picks all of them. I would take Woodford on any day but I have to admit I still ALWAYS have a bottle or 2 of Wild Turkey around. Their stuff just always seems to be consistent and solid. I heard good things about EW SB but have not been able to find it here in NC.

Coopers Craft 100 is $30 and is currently the best kept secret in bourbon. It is downright luxurious. Brown Foreman distillate aged in "chiseled and heavily charred" barrels. Its got the classic syrupy character of Old Forester products but with a big blast of sweet oakiness. Pour this one for a guest blind and they will think you brought something expensive out of your stash. I almost regret spreading the word but its just too damn good to keep a secret.

As with wine, a "good" bourbon is one you like. It can be inexpensive bottom-shelf, or it can be middle to high end. If you like it, it's good. :) Woodford is one of our favorites and still one of my favorite distilleries to visit.

I used to love Woodford Reserve when it came out and into the aughts, but now when I taste it all I get is an overwhelming marzipan note, even on blind tastings. Not sure if it’s me or the bourbon that changed, but I just can’t drink the stuff anymore. Love the channel, especially as a Wild Turkey lover.

I love 1792, $24.99 at Woodman's in the northern Chicago suburbs. Found the Russell's 10, normally now $39.99 for $35.99 at a local grocery store, I think it's fantastic. Cannot find the Evan Williams Single Barrell here, but the David Nicholson is at Binny's for $29.99. Bottles I like that I would add to this category are Four Roses Small Batch, and Knob Creek 9. Love the videos.

Thanks Kurt, I like this review in this price range. I know 3 of the 6 well. The 3 I haven't tried will be on my list thanks to your review. I believe the order for me to try those will be Russell's Reserve, Weller, and then David Nicholson. (My favorite in this price is Elijah Craig Small Batch).

Another good video! I now realize the problem with bourbon recommendations is rye v. wheat. I like wheated bourbons and hate the spice of rye when it predominates. If you don’t like Weller, then odds are you are a rye lover for example. Therefore your top picks might be my bottom. We need a designation like IBU in beer world for rye spice. On a scale from 1-100 I want no more than 10 in either. Russell is over my limit. Blanton’s is right at it. But I’m still fairly new, so I keep tasting.
@StillLivinginthewoods
@StillLivinginthewoods 2 года назад
Solid comment, and 100% correct in my opinion. You and I have the exact opposite tastes in whiskey, if it doesn't have that nice rye spice on the front end I don't usually want anything to do with it, and wheated bourbons tend to be my least favorites. Luckily there are TONS of different options out there for every taste,.. it's just a matter of wading through them all to find your favorites. I would like to see folks on whiskey related social media stop taking everything so personally too,.. there is no reason to get angry over what someone else likes or dislikes.

Eagle Rare is hard to find but I did find it in the 30s in Atlanta last fall. I'm still trying to get my hands on the Weller; I've got an aunt that makes bourbon balls every year for Christmas and give them as her gift to the family and she only uses Woodford Reserve in her recipe - suffice it to say, it is the gift that keeps on giving.

Great list. I wholeheartedly agree on the Evan Williams Single Barrel. Even with the variations from single barrel whiskies, it always hits way above its price point. I would add George Dickel Bourbon and Redwood Empire Pipe Dream, which are both readily available at or under $30 in SoCal. Same with Eagle Rare, but Henry McKenna 10 is at lest $59 and Weller usually starts at $70. Ouch.
@slbdrinks

Dickel is becoming more and more intriguing to me. Don’t have much experience with Redwood but will check out your recommendation.
@adamwright4262
@adamwright4262 2 года назад
@@slbdrinks Dickel is definitively divisive. The "bourbon" does not have the mineral taste some complain about with the standard expression. As for Redwood Empire, everything I've tried is tasty. Their main expressions are blends of sourced whiskey and their own juice, although they recently released a couple BIBs. The Emerald Giant rye is good, but the Lost Monarch bourbon/rye blend is where you should start.

Russel 10 is a real good one. But I will say I have had 2 bottles so far with an unopened 3 sitting here. It definitely shines after the neck is drank and it gets so air. In my opinion it goes from good to real good. 1792 is just solid. I enjoy high rye mash bill products. Even williams is good summer sipper. Good flavor but nothing that makes me go wow.

In my personal opinion I’m more into Buffalo Trace and Woodford Reserve. When I first started drinking it was regular Makers Mark but I’ve found that it’s more for mixing. Cask Strength is excellent. I liked Russell’s Reserve when I bought my first bottle but the second wasn’t as good. I had the same feeling with Eagle Rare.

A friend had me do a blind of my bar. I had no idea what I was tasting in the comparisons. He had matched ER and RR10 due to both being 10yo. Both had the same profile, but the RR10 seemed smoother and better controlled, like a well formed sine wave compared to a noisy sine wave, like the maker knew what they were doing and the ER being rough hewn. When he told me what they were, I was shocked and shocked at how alike they were in profile yet people tater for them instead of enjoying the RR10 which is better. Woodford is a great bourbon.

Kurt, Evan Williams Single barrel is my favorite bourbon but you are right about the variation. My first bottle was amazing (barrel 506). The 2nd bottle was nearly as good (516). Since then the flavor has really drifted in the two other barrels I've tried (952 and 873). I'm hoping to get back to that 506 magic! Just curious what barrel #s your bottles were from? I have 1100 and I think a 550something. I'm hoping the flavor correlates to warehouse location and the 500 range is the sweet spot.
