Just something to point out regarding groundwater resources: BIG water deposits aren't necessarily great as poison any part means poison all of it. Many separated pockets work better, though we can use mods to repaint things so not so huge now. Some seriously nice maps there though, and kudos to the stream makers: water is finnicky as hell. Can't believe that Rafterman didn't set the latitude to southern hemisphere though! Utterly gorgeous detailing of course.
I really appreciate all your great work in explaining and showcasing these maps. My favorites: Meridian Gateway and Wanaka look really wonderful. Thank you!
What a Great and really Informative Guide. I was just looking to see what Custom Map i would like to build on Next, This really really helped me to make the right Choice Thanks 🙂
I love the Fredericton map so much, but can't bring myself to use it cause of no world map, just a personal deal breaker. I've even tried to make my own world map for it, but idk if the fine is broken or what cause it crashes on me when I try to save it. I've been able to do that for other maps but unfortunately not Fredericton
The first map reminds me of a Cairo Illinois which is on the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers also an interesting place as the city is very abandoned and run down these days.
Map makers should know that there is a reason why wells used to be made on hills... ground water generally exists higher under high points of the terrain. lol
Them hill people will get ya if you mispronounce Allegheny- it's "Al-uh-GAY-nee". Excited for the mod support to be implemented on this game. I think the core gameplay is pretty solid, but man does it feel light on content in its current state. Good review, appreciate the work
Ahhhh my good ole Michigan accent coming through. We have a tendency to replace any hard sound (like the G sound there) with a faster less harsh sound (like the uh I used instead).
Yes...I was watching the video...and I was like no! LOL. I live in Hell (Texas) now, but I grew up about two hours away from this area. It looks like Pittsburgh to me.
It's weird that the Allegheny ridges map doesn't get below freezing, it definitely snows in the Alleghenies IRL! Also the entire Appalachian ridges tend to run N-S, so if you're traveling E-W you'd be going up and down a lot
@@Franimus I'm guessing it's probably because a large portion of players hate having snow in their games. A lot of map makers and players have said they wanted more non snow maps. I agree tho it totally should!
@@CodiakTheKodiak for sure, good timing. I like it because I don’t do well with challenging terrain, but I do want to challenge myself and build out some infrastructure around water so this place should be perfect.
thank you for featuring TWO! of my maps, i am very horned! but it sucks cause im working on my best map yet atm look out for Spring valley, this or next week!
I noticed you said Meridian Gateway was a height map but I'm pretty confident that it's a heavily modified Archipelago Heaven map by looking at those major mountains and the two large islands on the north and south side of the map.
Hey, made the North Harbour map, thanks for featuring it! 🥳 just to add, it’s not a height map import as I couldn’t figure out how to get that working, so it started from a flat plane and lots of brush strokes 😅
Unless they did some significant flattening themselves, the surrounding terrain in the map looks too flat to be Pittsburg, I think. I wouldn't be shocked if it wasn't far from there tho!
I was thinking the same thing! The area where the rivers converge looks like the area where Three Rrivers park is located. However, I do agree with @CodiakTheKodiak that it is a bit flat for Pittsburgh.
@@DisneyEnigmaticDreamer Downtown Pittsburgh from Grant St. to Point State Park (not Three Rivers) is actually very flat and has flooded several times in its history. The elevation doesn't rise much until you get to William Penn then Grant Street. Then you get to the Hill. Point State Park floods with only a few feet of raised river since it sits almost equal with the rivers.
I'm playing on "The Merchants" and I noticed you have it, but you skipped it. I'm really enjoying it. My only problem with it is the GIGANTICALLY OVERBUILT freeway entrance it starts you off with.
It's in my description as some other good options that barely made my cutting room floor. I felt like it was a really good map tho. I actually recorded 16 map breakdowns and then cut out 6 to keep the video close to 1hr. Merchants was the 11th map... Not that its worse than any or all of the maps shown, but in terms of variety I wanted to include some other more interesting maps like the atoll one.
I actually reached out to the creator and it's completely custom made. Direct quote from them "hey this map is actually an edit of the archipelago but everything is created by my imagination alone 🙂"
I noticed you have a new york city map but I haven't found it on the thunderstore. Where can I find it (if at all) and is it worth checking out? Native new yorker here lol
I got that one from Nexus mods which also has a really great Norfolk Virginia map. You will have to manually download it tho. The mod's description doesn't explain how too do that, so you'll need to go to AppData\LocalLow\Colossal Order\Cities Skylines II\Maps and place the .cok & .cok.cid files in there. www.nexusmods.com/citiesskylines2/mods/34
The lack of tree models and ground textures make all of them look boringly similar... the same exact shade of green for every map... no sand, no dry grass, no cliffs... This game has a ways to go...
