YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE | Little Nellie

Is this the ultimate Q gadget? James Bond uses a Wallis autogyro, nicknamed Little Nellie, in YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE (1967) in an attempt to locate Blofeld’s rocket base from the air. Real life Wing Commander Ken Wallis designed this unusual machine in the early 1960s. Unlike a helicopter, only the autogyro’s rear engine provides power during flight. Once airborne the top rotor spins freely due to the force of the air.

And he's never been topped. The original tall, dark and handsome spy. I always get this particular feeling when I see that pose with him in a tux, legs crossed with his Walther with silencer across his torso. We had the board game of Goldfinger with a little Odd Job and the DB5 with modifications. Wish I still had that. I do have the Thunderball game.

What I loved about the helicopter dogfight scene, apart from being mostly shot with real aircrafts performing the stunts, was that the simply-constructed airframes of the Bell 47 and the Little Nellie fighting with close-range weapons reminded me of the early dogfights in World War One, yet the technologies were unmistakably at 1960s level. Such contrasting impression really clicks with me, It's like cyborgs dressed in period clothes performing medieval duels.

You know, if they'd had the sense to just leave Bond alone, he might have flown back to base with the idea that he was barking up the wrong tree, that the freighter had off-loaded it's cargo somewhere else. Attacking him just draws more attention to the island. Even if he was shot down, it would mean someone would follow up on his death.

This is a great sequence that I've always enjoyed. But I just realized that if the bad guys hadn't attacked Bond then he never would have known that the base was there! I mean what's the point of having such a perfectly camouflaged volcano hideout if you're going to give away your position by attacking? They should have just let him go by, lol! But of course then we wouldn't have gotten such an exciting sequence.

I prefer one helicopter, without showing the pilots, following Bond for a while and then leaves. It doesn't raise suspicions, it looks at the volcanoes and for a while the autogyro caught the attention. Bond will imagine the scenes in 2.25-2.26 and 4.24-4.28 when helicopter follows him. We will understand that is Spectre's helicopter, when attacked to Kissy.

As stupid as bad guys may be, Blofeld is smart. He couldn't take the chance that when Bond went in for a closer look, he might have suspected the lake wasn't actually water which would have been enough for further inspection. Logic aside, I do agree that it seems a very typical bad guy mistake (which are classics and I love). Their biggest mistake was sending 4 men after him as that screams "we absolutely must kill this guy right now" urgency whereas only sending 1 seems like a half hearted effort. For me, the biggest question is how they managed to empty out an entire volcano, turn it into a bad guy lair with all that rocket science technology and move in a small army without anyone noticing anything?

You Only Live Twice is my favourite Connery film! This is mainly due to the atmosphere of the movie. The japanese culture and style is done so well in this film! Not only that! Lookwise, this film is absolutely amazing! The 2nd best after Moonraker if you ask me! It‘s filled up with beautiful cinematography, amazing filmsets and wonderful areal shots of Japan, like here! All of this just has to be praised! Blofeld as portrayed by Donald Pleasence is for me the most iconic villain of the series! SPECTRE’s Number 1 reveals his face! This reveal is a huge and very iconic moment in the franchise! Though my personal favourite Blofeld is Telly Savalas. I really like the Bond girls in here too! They are sweet and pretty, girls that every guy wants to be with! Connery himself gives more of a weaker performance though but I was never too bothered by this. John Barry‘s score gets better and better and better until he reaches his all time high in "Diamonds Are Forever"! I also really like the top 10 worthy title song too! Overall I consider this movie to be underrated because I‘m used to seeing it low in the rankings.

One thing in common with Bond villains is their need to kill anyone who comes close to their secret base or equipment, even if just an innocent person. Dr No killed innocent people for visiting Crab Key (except the shell collecting lady Honey Ryder who evaded his henchmen and who was eventually dismissed as a threat), and in Tomorrow Never Dies, an innocent tourist was killed for taking a photo of a stretch of coastline because it was near where the stealth boat was in hiding. It was assumed the choppers would be able to kill Bond which would neutralise the potential perceived threat, although him being killed would in itself raise suspicion and lead to further investigation.

On one of those occasions my son who was about seven or eight at the time, and a huge Bond fan, was allowed to sit in Nellie while I chatted with Wing Commander Wallis. It absolutely made my sons year, let alone day.

Big Picture Bond. It would have been more compelling had OHMSS been filmed first in 1967 (as was originally intended) and then make YOLT the revenge film in '69 and stick to the novel, complete with Japanese castle, poison garden and Bond strangling Shatterhand/Blofeld. Somehow Broccoli and Saltzman fell in love with the volcano concept, probably because of the Gemini/Apollo program and the Moon Race at the time.

First Bond movie I ever watched when I was 12 years old. I Watched it on TV in early 80´s. Back then I had heard and read so much about this "spy" that I could not let pass the chance to watch one of the movies. It happened to be "You Only Live Ywice" and was broadcasted on a very late TV session, starting 11pm on a weekday when I was supposed to be in bed by 9pm to attend school the next morning. But, boy, it was worth every second of it. Still today, I measure all other Bond movies bar "Goldfinger" to this one. Of course not talking about modern CGI or size of the menace he was put himself against but by the sheer fun of getting all these memorable expected lines, gadgets and plot for the very 1st time. Connery is the ultimate Bond, hands down. Perhaps because he was the James Bond right from the peak of Cold War days added to the innovative and creative spirit of the 60´s. Main song, sung by Nancy Sinatra is undoubtly the best Bond theme ever.

Always thought this was an underrated Bond film, albeit it focuses more on action and stunts because as like Thunderball, YOLT had a bigger budget than the first couple of films, the volcano set is impressive, this helicopter scene was quite well done, the fake death and funeral scene was a nice touch and a couple of the fight sequences are decent, the plot is fairly simple and bit over the top but bearing in mind it didn’t follow the plot in the book aside from the Japanese location and Bond meeting Blofeld and while Connery had defined the role of Bond and made it his own you can tell in this film that he was ready to retire as Bond, he’s by no means ineffective, he still makes the grade so to speak but there’s just a little bit of the enthusiasm missing, he announced during the filming that he was leaving the series, his contract was finished and as the producers wouldn’t pay him the increased salary he wanted he decided to call it a day, he was becoming tired of playing Bond and felt the character was becoming secondary to the gadgets and the spectacle which was happening to a degree and didn’t have any reservations about giving it up, he was also tiring of the longer filming schedules of the Bond films and in Connery s time as Bond they made one every year so it didn’t give him much time to do other films and then have time to himself before doing the next Bond but his relationship with the producers had deteriorated as he felt they weren’t being fair to him financially as he had signed up as Bond in 1961 on a low salary as nobody knew how well it would do but when the films raked in hundreds of millions of pounds they didn’t increase Connery s salary accordingly, albeit he was given a slice of the profits later on. The studio did persuade him to return once more for Diamonds are Forever on a big money salary after George Lazenby resigned as Bond but he was never going to continue as Bond beyond that even when they offered him even more for Live and Let Die but Connery s Bond was suited to the 60s Cold War era and not to the lighter hearted films of the 70s.

Ken Wallis (retired RAF Wing Commander) was an autogyro enthusiast and builder. He was the pilot in this sequence as I recall. He built and flew autogyros at air shows and would show off their stability by flying in front of the crowds sitting sidesaddle with both legs out of the side of the aircraft and waving with both hands. If that isn't enough to inspire confidence, I'm not sure what is.

It's true. Bond doesn't see open the crater or a launch. Film's plot is good, is used twice (''The Spy Who Loved Me''), but they didn't pay attention to details. Better one helicopter, without showing the pilots, to follow Bond for a while and then go away. It raises no suspicions, it looks at the volcanoes and for a while the autogyro caught the attention. Bond will imagine the scenes in 2.25-2.26 and 4.24-4.28 when the helicopter follows him. We would have known it was a Specter helicopter, when attacked to Kissy.
