One of the great things about being a whisky lover is the seemingly never ending variety of different whiskies you could try. But if you had to pick just 5 of them, which whiskies would you choose? Just before I started Whisky on the West Coast there was a fun whisky challenge that was making the rounds called the "You Only Need 5 Whiskies Challenge." The concept was you had to pick whiskies to fit into 5 different categories that would represent your whisky shelf if you could only have 5 of them. The 5 categories are:
Guilt Free Pour(Daily Drinker)
Impress A Guest
Mixer
Friday Night Pour
Special Occasion Whisky
I'm going to take my own shot at this challenge but I'm also going to make two small changes to my list. One is that I have to actually have a bottle of my choice on my shelf right now. The other change is that l'm going to allow for a couple of honourable mentions to keep this challenges as accurate as possible. Better late than never, this is my entry into the "You Only Need 5 Whiskies Challenge." My list is certainly very Single Malt Scotch whisky focused which I'm sure will not surprise many. What would you pick as your 5 whiskies in the "You Only Need 5 Whiskies Challenge." Thanks as always to everyone for watching! Cheers, Matthew

Love this list Matt. Can’t disagree with any. Here is my 5 (because I’m sure everyone cares): Guilt free: Bunnahabhain 12. Maybe my favorite Islay distillery and this one is just a banger. Impress guests: Invergorden single barrel 45 year. It’s a stupid big age statement which impresses anyone. Not the best whisky but fun to taste history and think about what life was like 45 years ago. Mixer: Wild Turkey 101. Not a cocktail guy at all but know this works well and also love it neat. Friday night: Laphroaig cask strength. Any batch is great and so accessible with a great price. That bottle takes me back to Islay. Special dram: Springbank local barley 16. Enough said. Springbank is the king and this bottle I dedicated to my late puppy dog. It’s delicious, hard to find, and special to me in every way.

Guilt-Free Pour - Glenfiddich 14 Bourbon Barrel Reserve, Impress A Guest - Dalmore, King Alexander III, Mixer - Starward (lagavulin barrels), Friday Night Pour - Aberlour A'bunadh, Special Occasion - Glenfiddich 21 year Gran Reserva

Awesome 5 whiskies Chris 👌 I've only had the Dalmore King Alexander III once but it's one heck of a whisky. Haven't had many Starward whiskies but hope too soon! Cheers eh 🥃

@@whiskyonthewestcoast Matt - Thanks a ton for replying to me. I've definitely subscribed. I very much enjoy your content!!! --- In regard to the Starward...I hope you like it. Personally I didn't care for it too much. It was just kinda bland. What I tried didn't have much depth of flavor and really nothing to bask in like the other 4 on my list. But this is a perfect reason that I put it in as my "Mixer". If you can find anything...ice, 7up, coke, something....to liven it up, it would help. --------------- In regard to the King Alexandr III, Dalmore can get a lot of flack for price, coloring, low ABV, chill-filtering (and all of those criticisms are rightfully deserved)...but to me the depth of flavor and fullness of the KAIII really sets it apart. Not everyone has $250 for a bottle of whisky. But this is a rare instance (based on the fullness of flavor, the length and fullness of the finish, the aroma and the flavors) where it's worth that splurge. It's something you don't pour every day...but whether it's a reward for yourself or a treat to a guest, you pull it out then. 🥃

Thanks Jon! I agree with your point on having a Bourbon in the mix, or even a Rye for that matter. The last couple years I always slipped it in with that mixer category with a WT101 or Buffalo Trace and then you could drink it straight if you liked. But that all got messed up by Macleans Nose haha. Thanks for watching! Cheer Neighbour 🥃

“Impress your guests” can vary wildly depending upon your crowd. I tend to share whisky with my brothers. One enjoys peat & the other doesn’t. Of the four bottles we shared last week, Longmorn 16 was the biggest hit. Not challenging in the slightest but not boring either. Coconut & orchard fruit. Not sure it’s worth the premium, but quite good. Cheers.

100% accurate Tim. Who is my guest? If it was my coworker who has only had a handful of whisky I would pick a different whisky than if you were coming over for a dram. I'd probably pick something special from Campbeltown for that assignment. Longmorn 16 is what inspired me to seek out teenaged IB Longmorn. Quite a good whisky. Cheers friend 🥃

Thanks for a great list. Mine would be: Guilt free: Talisker 10 or Loch Lomond 12, Glenallachie 12 Impress your guests: Aberlour A'bunadh batch 67 or Elijah Craig Barrelproof C923 Mixer: Wild turkey 101 or Lot 40 Friday night: Ardbeg Uigeadail or Wild turkey rarebreed, Deanston 18. Special occasion: Glendronach 18 (Billy Walker edition) or Springbank 12 CS.

Great picks Torben! I like seeing Loch Lomond 12 getting some recognition in the first category. Wild Turkey 101 really feels made for that Mixer category and is tough to beat. Having recently revisited a Walker era GlenDronach 18 reminded me just how next level those editions were. But Springbank 12 CS is a can't miss whisky. Love this list! Thanks for watching! Great list Matt! Would love to try that Kilhoman ! Totally with you on the Benromach 10 being the guilt free pour. It's followed closely behind by Glen Garioch 12 and Ledaig 10, as you mentioned also. If i was in the UK I'd also have the Campbeltown Loch in there, which is insanely good quality for the money (about £40). Sadly haven't seen it hear in BC yet. My Friday night dram would be Ledaig 18, but I'm trying to ration it out so maybe just one Friday every other month 😂

Thanks my friend! I don't think there are many of the Kilchoman 100% Islay barley 10th edition around but I have seen the 11th recently so there might be some near you too! We seem to be on the same frequency with the "guilt free pour" picks. If they were available I B.C. or Alberta I would be all over both Ledaig 18 and Campbeltown Loch. Great quality at amazing prices with those. Cheers James 🥃

I typically drink rye or bourbon. I do enjoy some scotches and single malts....I picked up a bottle of buna 12 and a lagavulin 16 and I unfortuniately can not stand them. Any ideas? I do not want to pour then out. But I normally enjoy my pours neat. Should I try them on the rocks? Or mix them with something? Maybe find someone to make a trade?
@whiskyonthewestcoast
@whiskyonthewestcoast 2 месяца назад
Hmmm, that is really unfortunate Curt! Sorry to hear that you're struggling with the Bunna 12 and Lagavulin 16. They are very different types of Single Malt so it would be hard to make a suggestion without knowing what part of the taste you aren't enjoying. Bunna is a sherried single malt and Lagavulin 16 is a skoky sherried Peated single malt. Regardless, they would typically be not as sweet as a Bourbon or as sweet and spicy as a Rye. If you "can not stand them" then I'd try everything. Try them with a teaspoon of water, maybe try them on the rocks, with the Lagavulin 16vyoj could make a smoky old fashioned cocktail or a Penecillin cocktail. You could also leave them on the shelf for a bit. Once they are opened they will change and mellow out over time. If it is a Sulphur note the longer the bottles are open the more than should subside. Also if you try them neat maybe let them sit in the glass for about 20 minutes before enjoying them, this allows them to open up. These are my first suggestions without knowing exactly what part you're not enjoying. Hope this helps. Cheers 🥃

I can't even image what my five would be off the shelves. On the shelves: 1. The Everyday Sipper: Hmmm, Glenallachie 15 or 10CS. Both affordable, tasty, and easy to acquire(at least they were at one point) 2. Impress the Guest: One of the Speymalts maybe? Good quality and who doesn't like hearing you're pouring them a well-aged Macallan? 3. Mixer: I do not mix. Probably one of the Thompson Bros. blends. The fiancee keeps wanting to try the Rip Van Winkle 10 with her Red Birch Root Beer some day though XD 4. Friday Night Pour: The Springbank 15. Easy choice. 5. Special Occasion Bottle. The Decadent Drinks NAS 30. I'm nursing the feck out of that puppy. It gotta last XD

It's a post-apocalyptic whisky hellscape to be limited to only 5 whiskies. However your list is awesome. You had me at Rip Van Winkle and Root Beer. GA 15 for $90 was sweet while it lasted. And that NAS 30 is a special, special whisky. I believe Angus said he has one more cask left of the three that made up that parcel. Hopefully that means we'll get a NAS 35 or something in the next few years. Cheers Hex! 🥃

Good list! I find answering things like this almost impossible, because variety is of utmost importance to me. Even for the 'special occasions' category, I would have to list two: Highland Park - The Dragon 1961 (my 'birth year' dram) and Ledaig 42 year old Dùsgadh (my most expensive bottle so far). What is normally referred to as 'daily drinker' would depend on whether I wanted something smoky or not (back when I only had four bottles, I would alternate between Laphroaig and Cragganmore). I don't drink cocktails (and when I did they were not whisky-based), but I do sometimes put Famous Grouse in coffee - does that count as a 'mixer'? For Friday night and impressing guests I have literally hundreds to choose from...
@whiskyonthewestcoast
@whiskyonthewestcoast 2 месяца назад
I’m totally with you Andrew. It’s a funny thing to try to complete a challenge picking only 5 whiskies in a room with hundreds of whiskies lol, feels unrepresentative and a bit dishonest. But maybe that’s the challenging part. Your special occasion pours both sound unbelievable and are from two of my favourite distilleries in another era. Incredible stuff, I’m sure. Famous Grouse in your coffee definitely counts as mixer haha! Cragganmore deserves more love. And truly, to pick an impress a guest bottle it certainly depends on who your guest is. I’d pick something very different if I was hosting you than if I was hosting someone from work who has only had a couple of drams before. From what I’ve gleamed you have a pretty much unmatched collection Andrew. Thanks for watching Andrew! Cheers friend 🥃
