We never noticed that we were too busy wondering how Batman and Robin changed into their costumes while sliding down the bat pole back then that was the biggest mystery 😂
@KVNDV1
@KVNDV1 Год назад
In the BATMAN (1966) movie, this is “explained” by Adam West’s Bruce Wayne pulling down an “Automatic Costume Changer” lever which presumably puts the Bat-outfits on him and Burt Ward’s Robin as they slide down to the bottom and leap out towards the Batmobile. It can be reversed as when Bruce/Batman gets on the bottom cushion and rides it up towards the sliding bookshelf in the study at Stately Wayne Manor. Alfred uses a service elevator but it is never shown where the entrance door is at the Manor. Presumably it has false buttons so that Aunt Harriet wouldn’t accidentally ride down into the Batcave🦇

This was one of the first things I noticed about this show. Especially since the show was on every day when I was kid. They could have film several versions back to back, to be used later. That would cost, more but not a whole lot. I think they didn't care if people noticed. It added to the charm.

@kevin10001

They probably reused the shot of hubie and Burt leaving the cave in many episodes cause it saved money and they could put the credits over it for the episode telling who the villain/villains were and written by stuff like that and not have to shoot different ones for each episode
@Octoberfurst
@Octoberfurst Год назад
I wondered the same thing too. When they were filming the original scene of the Batmobile arriving they could have done a number of different takes that same day. Just have different people walking around and have Batman getting out of the vehicle first and then do one with Robin getting out first. You could have like 30 takes of it and even if you used the same one more than once no one would notice.
@francisdhomer5910
@francisdhomer5910 Год назад
@@kevin10001 I think it would have been fun to have them slide down the wrong pole. In the Batcave Batman would be dressed as Robin. Yep, I would totally have done that as the director.
@TRealDC
@TRealDC Год назад
@@Octoberfurst I'm an actor - trust me when I say that 30 takes, even of this simple 'arriving' section, could take a half-day, possibly more: You're resetting 15-20 people & rechecking the heavy, cumbersome lighting, resetting props etc. You're using up 'miles' of physical film (not video tape). Who knows what the Batmobile itself needed between takes. There would have been numerous outtakes where someone stumbles, the Batmobile stops in the wrong place, Adam gets his cape caught, etc. Shows like this would have tight timelines. I've worked mostly on budget shows where we've done 18-page days, as opposed to a more regular 8-12! This stuff is knocked out as fast as possible! Finally, the budget on this would have been small; you simply can't afford this kind of indulgence. Check out almost any TV show - even more modern ones. That X-Files 'outside the FBI' establishing shot, that (pick a show) 'THE CAPITOL - DAY' shot... Lucifer's aerial shot of his club at night - they're usually the same in their particular series, for exactly these reasons.

@willjackson3432
@willjackson3432 Год назад
They probably keep that space available just for Batman. Or maybe the Commisioner tells O Hara to go out and move his car every time he calls Batman just so he can get there quicker. Even if the Mayor was parked there, his car's getting moved.
@outsider238

They also use the same scene over and over of Batman and Robin exiting the Batpoles and getting into the Batmobile. You can tell because of the way Robin opens the door of the Batmobile.

Sometimes they would change the star field background, but they used two of those REALLY often! One has three stars arranged to look like Orion's Belt in the real-life constellation of Orion, and another is usually used at the end of the episode, with the Enterprise (from the second pilot) "sailing off into the sunset", as it were, but off to the right-hand side is a constellation that I call "The Cosmic Coke Bottle"--because that's EXACTLY what it looks like! Nice catch. One big reason for reusing scene(s) was because COLOUR film processing was sooo expensive at the time. Let's remember, tape was so expensive that Dr Who would tape over existing tape used for the show. Some episodes don't even exist because of this. Even the old Battlestar Galactica show in the 70's did this, they used the same pre-shot fighter ship scenes from the movie and kept using it over and over...

Certainly I noticed that the beginning of all the part ones of the two-part Wednesday Thursday Batman show in the first two years were the same. From the hop from the bat poles into the Batmobile and to the Commissioner's office, it was the same. And definitely exciting and enjoyable and very superhero-y! I loved it, especially the Batmobile"s atomic battery. "Battery to power, turbine to speed," Rnobin said. I'm sure things changed in the third season when it was only on one night a week and with the coming of Batgirl, but I much recall this fine footage, even as the credits rolled. Thanks for the 1966-67 flashback! Keep up these deep dives into the Caped Crusaders' world. And let's be hopeful.

I love all the Batman show trivia! It was my favorite show as a kid and I still get a kick out it 40 yrs later! I noticed recently that in an early episode, Batman has to prop open the trunk on the Batmobile to get something out but later the trunk stays open by itself, so things do change during the show. I also wonder why sometimes they show Robin doing the pre-drive checklist in the Batcave and sometimes they don't. They also later added a scene where they put on seatbelts, so was that an effort to promote safety? Seatbelts only became standard in US cars in 1964.

That is common in MANY shows. Sometimes during the one shoot they might have taken 3 or for different angles, but more often it is just the same exact shot inserted at a huge $avings. It is amazing how expensive such simple shots can be. "Little House on the Prairie" used the same train over and over--Sierra #3 as well as the train station with a water tower you can recognize from "Petticoat Junction". The same shots pulling out of the station, whatever city was portrayed, would show the same little mountain in the distance. Studios would accumulate a collection of various stock footage ready to use like menu items in any films they made or sell to other studios. This was smart business.

I think the most noteworthy thing, however, is the fact that this scene was done totally by stunt doubles. If you read Eartha Kitt's biography she mentioned that the show wanted her to drive a special "Catwoman Car" and asked her if she could drive a standard transmission car. To get the job she just said she could and went on to say that she and a friend rented a Volkswagen Beetle and stayed up most of the night before the filming practicing in an empty parking lot until she got it down! Then as she said and what you can see from the scene she and The Joker are only in it for about 20 - 30 seconds as they drive away! Hahaha!

Speaking of saving money, the Batgirl season was mainly filmed indoors with a black background.

Absolutely; perhaps I first noticed if when it went into syndication so I watched each episode over and over. I enjoyed this commentary keep up the good work.

In the commentary, of Batman The movie Adam West said, they reused the shot of them arriving in the batmobile.

Cartoons back in the day did this constantly, any chase scene backgrounds reused endlessly. This show was campy, cutting corners didn't detract from it.

I used to watch the cartoon "He-Man and the Masters Of The Universe" from the 80's and they seemed to used the same ten cells and just put them in different orders each episode.

Yes, I did notice that it's the same people/scene. That nurse is always going somewhere everytime Batman comes! (Not really but she's conscientious!) I didn't know until one episode that the commissioner's office isn't on the main floor but that building doesn't seem tall enough because they got into an elevator and asked for I believe 13th floor. It was in 'Hizzoner the Penguin" It seemed strange to think it was that high up. I thought they just went in the front and just inside would be the office.

Something you may not know. It was alleged that Adam West crashed the Batmobile exiting the cave. So it was expensive to take the risk, the Batmobile exit scene was recycled every episode. Someone once told me Adam West was a horrible driver. Can’t claim accuracy on that statement.

Adam West did not drive the car out of the cave, a stunt man drove it, but Burt Ward had to ride shotgun because of the close up, you could tell it would not be him. They took off violently and made a hard left. The passenger door flung open and Burt almost fell out. The second take he knew to hold on. This was in his book, My life in tights.

@@wurly164 I watched "Return To The Batcave: The Adventures Of Adam and Burt" has a scene which showed that Burt had to be in the Batmobile in the scene, while West had a stuntman.

Except for certain close-ups or scenes of the Batmobile arriving at a destination, Adam West never drove the car. It was only Hubie Kerns, Adam's stunt double and stand-in, who drove it. Good thing, too, as the Batmobile's steering linkage had a tendency to break. Kerns could also be seen driving the Batcycle in head-on shots taken from a truck rolling in front of the cycle. You can clearly see Burt Ward's sunt double, Victor Paul, sitting on the go-cart and holding onto the sides of the "box" for dear life.

As a child of the '60s, and seeing only one episode per week, I had always assumed that it was the same scene used over and over. It would be more obvious these days, however, with binge watching allowing us to see multiple episodes in one sitting.

saving money by reusing footage was a common thing back then. it was the reason in westerns for example that the actors always wore the same outfits so they could reuse footage of them riding instead of shooting it for every episode. the budgets were really small for tv shows back then, for example the budget for star trek the motion picture was more than all 3 seasons of the show

It has been rumored that the Joker stole each of the unique footage and substituted the same footage in each episodes that is why he is laughing throughout his episodes. Laughing at his secret inside joke. He is so dastardly evil!

Took a WB studio back lot tour 2 years ago and they actually let us get out and take pictures on the steps of the building (still looks exactly the same). I geeked out because I loved this show as a kid. the tour guide also told us it was only filmed once but used in almost every single episode.
