I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.

Hi Glenn from the UK. I went to see a band over the weekend, and one of the support bands caught my attention. (Knife Brides) His guitar tone sounded great.....heavy and articulate. He was playing a EVH 5150 lunch box through and Zilla cab. I chatted to him after the gig, and asked him about his speakers. He instantly looked so happy that someone was talking to him about speakers and not just the amp. The cab was loaded with greenbacks btw.

There are 3 solid reasons to have more than one amp. 1. Because it's fuqin cool. 2. Because you like it. 3. Everything eventually comes full circle. And when it does. They are worth a pretty penny. In 1981 you would see junk yards full of late 60s early 70s muscle cars. Just sitting there rotting away. Then in 1996 people decided. "You know what? I really liked those cars, they were fuqin cool". So then people started restoring them. Then by 2004 you'd see those cars at a Barrett Jackson auction going for 6 figures. Why? Because cool sh:t always come full circle. And when they do, they're very sought after. Hell 40 year old grown azz men are paying hundreds and maybe even thousands to buy their favorite hot wheels and GI Joe toys. Because they liked them. They were cool. Now they want to own them again. Today We have the technology to emulate any amp on the planet. Right now. You don't even need to own an amp. And that's awesome. But tube amps will come full circle. And when they do. They will fetch astronomical prices. Why you ask. Because they're fuqin cool. People like them.
@travisspaulding2222
@travisspaulding2222 7 месяцев назад
Yeah, I am converting to modeling, but that circle is definitely going to come around. Some band will release an album that everyone loves, and when they are asked what IRs they used or what modeling gear they have, their answer will be "We just cranked some Marshalls and put a mic in front of it" and the guitar crowd will run out and buy real amps again. It reminds me of the late 80s and early 90s when everyone was going all rackmount. Instead of a tube amp, people were buying power amps and preamps because high gain amps weren't nearly as common as they are now. Then high gain tube amps became more common, so everyone went back to tube amps. Then modeling came around. The pendulum will come back as it always does.
@SirHeadly84
@SirHeadly84 7 месяцев назад
Right. But other than saying you own one, what's the benefit these days of using an actual 80s Era Marshall vs a modeler? With cars you can't magically make the 2023 supra the same as a 94 supra. Lol

@@SirHeadly84 Also, to take it a step further, it speaks volumes that you can still have a fully functional 80s era Marshall. Will we be able to say the same thing about a Helix in 40 years? I doubt it.

The rackmount craze is a great example of how things come into fashion and then disappear again. I kind of think the trends change around more and more elaborate rigs VS simple rigs. Like you have everything you ever wanted in your signal chain then then one day you plug straight in to an amp and it sounds so much better in that moment. Or when you have a super complicated pedal board and you build a simple 2nd board just for fun and it's like "holy shit this board with 4 pedals on it sounds SO MUCH better". Now that you can have modelling and a simple rig, one pedal, power amp, cab, I don't know if those people will go back just because it's so easy. Although maybe a lunchbox EVH head and cab is just as easy.

I love the moving the mic demonstration on the amp and how mic position affects tone. When I took an audio engineering class in college my teacher told me that the edge of the speaker is better for low end and the center is better for treble, and ever since then I've used 2 mics on my shitty little Line6 Spider to get a mix of the lows and highs and the results are pretty damn good considering what I'm working with. Highly recommend trying it out. And make sure that you have headphones on when you're dialing in your tone because what the mic is hearing is ultimately what really matters.

funny story here. several years ago I was starting to get into amp heads. I had dumped my line6 combo and needed a cab. nothing fancy, just something to play at home, jam with friends, and maybe record a little. at the time the joyo zombie amp head was perfect. price was great, nice size, all the sound demos were good, etc. I thought a cab is a cab is a cab. so I drove down to a LA guitar center. they had a few used and new cabs. I was able to actually bring the amp since it's small. i grabbed the cheaper used cab and it was ok. i'm thinking fine. well, for kicks I decided to plug into a few different cabs and holy crap, what a difference. remember, I knew like nothing about cabs and speakers and all that. just the same guitar, same amp, and worlds of difference. I ended up spending twice as much as I had planned on an orange 1x12 because yes, the sound was that much better. I still know very little, but you are 110% correct that the speaker makes a world of difference. no, it's not scientific and no, I don't have the tests obviously. but yes, the amp sounded totally different in different cabs. as I've watched alot of your videos, I am thinking of changing the speaker. it has a vintage 30 in it. any suggestions for the best 1x12 speaker. there's alot of us probably in this position. thanks.

I honestly didn't really get how much a speaker can change the overall tone...until I did my own test. I have 2 cabs, both ENGL. One is a 4x12 with Greenbacks. The other is a 2x12 with V30's. I used my ENGL Ironball 20 with the EXACT same settings, same guitar and recorded them. I laid the first track with the Greenbacks. Then I recorded the same riff with the other cab with the V30's. The sound was very different. This also made me realize that when I use these cabs live, I need to decide what "tone" do I want to use at this particular gig. Thanks for the info Glenn. A real eye opener!

I love your exposure of the bullshit in this community. The longer I live, the more evidence I see that this kind of bullshit is EVERYWHERE! I remember a few old videos I saw years ago that opened my eyes. In one video, someone snuck some cheap wine into a fancy wine tasting exhibition and none of the "experts" noticed the cheap wine by taste. They just assumed they were different fancy expensive wines. And then my FAVORITE video was when someone went out and bought a bunch of McChickens (the cheapest little chicken sandwiches from McDonald's), cut them into little fancy squares, and put toothpicks in them. They they went to a super high class fancy pantsy cuisine event and served the squares on a silver platter. Everyone who tried one was very impressed and had lots of verbage to express about the exquisite flavor and texture. Nobody knew they were eating a fucking $1 sandwich. From that day forward, I knew that 99% of humanity was full of shit. Thank you for blowing this industry wide open Glenn!

I use amp sims when I gig. Guess what……..No one cares….No one knows or cares. Everyone loves what they hear, not what they see. Never had a complaint. Ever. Even from musicians. I guess it’s a strange phenomenon that I practice more than I complain? Maybe that I spend more time playing than paying? It’s a weird concept. I spent waaaaay more money on the PA system speakers for the venues that I run my equipment into that people actually hear the music through and the quality of the sound THROUGH THE SPEAKERS is the heart and soul of the show. Also knowing how to turn EQ knobs kinda helps a bit. What a friggin concept???

Way back when the 5150 first came out I purchased the first one that arrived at “Daddy’s Junky Music” in Hartford Ct. I still have it today and its still one hell of a amp and it must have at least 100’s of shows under its belt. Although I have always wanted a Dual Rectro and your comparison has changed my mind. You also changed my opinion about speakers, I love greenbacks. It would be cool if you did a comparison between similar speakers but different brands. I fall into that old guy Fender/Gibson brand traditionalist for guitars; but slowly going elsewhere like G&L, and old school RG550’s from the early 90’s. Keep up the great work.

Since you mentioned a Soldano: my SLO Synergy module sounds very similar to my Orange Rocker 15 Terror - at least to my ears in the room, didn't record it. I think it would be very interesting to see, if the same is true for the "real" Soldano. I've compared them by using the foot switch on the Synergy preamp, while playing. So my playing might have skewed my perception as well. The power amp was the one in the Orange in both cases. No matter the cab (I've tried with a single V30, a single Creamback, a dual Alnico Blue and a dual Greenback cabs. In all cases the SLO sounded very similar to the Orange in the room. Also the Synergy preamp is not broken. I did the same tests with the OS, and the Friedman BE/BB module, and these did sound significantly different to the Orange. Also I've tried the same with a VOX AC30 (yes, the one with the Alnico Blue Speakers, I use as a cab as well) instead off the Orange, which did sound significantly different to the SLO. Therefore preamp and module are obviously fine. You might also note, that my experiments were not about metal sounds, like Glens, but more with classic rock sounds. I've just dialed in a sound on every preamp I liked at the moment, not intentionally trying to make them sound similar, or particularly different, just pleasant and to my taste. Actually my intention was, to familiarize myself with the differences of these amps. Though I'm happy with Mike Soldano earning his money, if any of the viewers can't afford one, you'll get pretty close with these relatively cheap Orange Terrors. At least for classic Rock sounds, and probably also for Metal I guess, though I haven't checked that. Save your money for a reasonable cab, with great speakers. Or, if you prefer a "silent stage", for something, like e.g. a TwoNotes Capture X, or an UA OX-box.

I bought a Mesa mark V because of the mark lead circuit. At the same time I wanted to be able to do more Recto stuff. After I realized I'm able to twist the knobs in the extreme mode and get the Recto metal shit out of the Boogie as well, I knew this is the only amp I need. And IF there would be any need for different character, still got my Helix with tons of preamps/amps and can bypass the preamp on the Boogie, giving me tens of expensive amps for much less money. Not even talking about amp sims... And btw the Helix I got for life gigs and am doing all stuff in there, it's nice Swiss army knife for recording with 4 cable method as well. Conclusion? Get the one head which serves you best with the options. Everything else can be dirt cheap. And yeah, don't forget to get decent speakers, they will set your tone character!

I’m a basement recording guy, and when I was recording my friend’s band recently we used their individual amps. An Engl Powerball for one guitarist and a Splawn Quickrod for the other guitarist. Both of them went through at Fryette PS-2 loadbox and the same IR. The Engl had no overdrive in front, and the Splawn had an SD-1. Aside from one signal having more bass and more gain than the other, they really weren’t so different in sound. I think it was cool that we used their individual amps, because they got the feel they’re used to at practice while recording. However, sound wise it probably wasn’t necessary at all. It was an eye opener for me. What you say about amps not mattering as much as people think rings true good sir!

The EQ cured me of a lot of gear acquisition syndrome with regards to the drive pedals. If all the difference between a boutique OD and a mass produced version of the same circuit is that the vintage is little bit less bright, then I can achieve that with a tiny tweak to the EQ and I don't see a reason to spend 2 times the money on the boutique version. (of course sometimes boutique pedals are much more cool, but that's a different story) Speaking of boutique pedals, I recently got Earthquaker Devices Blumes (with a B, and yes, I know some will oppose calling EQD boutique) and it's a super versatile bass distortion that can easily do great hard rock and punk distorted bass tones. Maybe you could give it a spin to see how well it works in the metal context?

Been binging a lot of vids from you comparing humbuckers, speakers and amps. and I honestly no longer desire to get an Mesa mini or ritzy cab, no longer wish to chase that gucci PRS anymore and just get a Harley B. and lots of strings. Been fixing up the bass I picked up at the pawn shop (needed a new wire harness and pots were damaged beyond deoxit repairing magic.) So with a battery change and a new pair of strings I'm a happy camper. Been practicing on the bass to get better and record some decent licks with it. Still wanna go for a Headrush pedal board because it gives me Guitar, Bass and voice a effects pedal I can load IR's into. I've been using an Eleven Rack forever and I'm just tired of having to lug around so much gear, (rack unit, pedals, expression pedals, and midi controllers, its a bit much outside the studio.) so its high time I sold a lot of it and just got the bloody pedalboard and have just an instrument and a pedal board to take around. Thank you for suggesting WAVES PRS plugin, it sounds phenomenal. Sadly many compression plugins all sound the same to me so its all my Ultralite mk3's heavy lifting on soft compression and limiting. I almost wanna jump on the IK Media tonex one pedal cause its so tiny and portable, But honestly, just having everyone in one board would rock my world. Thank you for opening my eyes and any time I wanna start chasing brands or get something with a Mesa name, I'll just print out a sticker of the rectumfrier and put it on the damn pedal board. XD I think its high time I just cover the logos on things and just focus on being a better musician and stop hyper focusing on stupid insipid BS. I'm hoping to see new IR's of all these speakers you keep experimenting with and recording on.

You know, after watching this video several times (as I found quite a bit of it compelling and useful, as I do a lot of content on this channel), I thought of an interesting topic (and my apologies for posing it if it's already been covered). I've been playing bass for roundabout 30ish years (yes, yes, punchlines abound), and I've tried a ton of different amps, basses, pedals, etc. However, I've always come back to the same brand for bass cabinet: SWR. The EARLY SWR, mind you: and this diverts to my idea for something to explore. It's my understanding that SWR was its own company for a number of years but was then bought out by Fender. The quality apparently "changed" (implication being negative) after said buyout. I currently own a Goliath II cabinet (pre-Fender), bought it something like 17 years ago, and have had ZERO complaints about its performance, both live and in-studio. Structurally, it's a beast and solidly made (though it definitely is heavy, coming in at nearly 100 lbs). As I get older, a dolly is a must. One key thing to admit, however: I've never played through the Goliath III cabinets (post-buyout), so I can't honestly say if they're any better, worse, different, ad nauseam. My question: is there any merit to aiming towards certain production years of a given amp/cab/guitar/etc.? We've talked a lot on the channel about certain well-known brands, but I'd be curious to see if certain years were far better than others (and "far better" is subjective, I realize) and whether this were something measurable, say X number of Les Pauls, Y number of Rickenbacker 4001's, etc., from different production runs. Cheers from San Diego!

First time commenting. What you say is logical and makes sense. Not trying to defend guitar players, but I am one, and there are some hurdles we have to overcome in order to have a truly open mind, and really understand what is being said here. Guitar players love the Cosplay...what we SEE behind us matters....We hear with our eyes to a point, and that is a disservice to us when evaluating recorded sound. We also judge the amp by its 'in the room" sound....when what you are dealing with is the recorded sound.....Big difference that guitarists need to understand. Many of those big differences between amps disappear when put through the extra steps and filters of recording....and even live sound. I can see that it is difficult to speak harsh truth when some have emotions involved. We guitar players some or most?) LOVE our gear, and can get an emotional attachment to it....another hurdle. LOL, keep doing what you do. It is a good fight when done for the truth...even if a bit abbraisive (which I enjoy as it is entertaining). \m/

another relevant point to add is, even if making both amps sound the same was somewhat challenging to do with eq or some other filter, the fact that you can make them sound the same is kinda of the point. 2 different amps which if both owned would cost you thousands, nothing wrong if you like the look of the amps or want to be a collector (for whatever reason) the only real reason to own multiple amps is if you want completely different sounds, like a fender twin, a marshall jcm 800, etc. I have in my own testing eq matched almost every metal tone I've heard on albums with a digital amp sim and a handful of IRs

I bought a used 6505+ for like 500 bucks a few years ago. I wouldn't exactly call that a "fuck ton" of money, particularly since he's running a studio, and that amp is like a staple of modern metal. I think it's worth having one kicking around, if only for the simple purpose of keeping your options open.

Hey Glenn, don’t know about Spiders that can turn the IRs off, but the POD XT and XT Live can turn off their cab and mic emulations. I have the XT Live, which is the floorboard version, and had never really loved how it sounded, until I ran it through the Harley Benton 2x12 with V30s. Of course, these are the same old speaker everyone uses, but you use it to re-amp as it does take line level input, then run an IR in the box and voilá! Old tech meets new tech and works amazing.

Hi Glenn. I have a question. First, I'll present my situation, I inherited a little bit of cash in 2004. I'd always played thru practice amps cause I'm just a hobbyist. I was playing with a few friends at the time which could've been a decent band as all of us were competent so I took my 2003 LTD EC-1000 with Duncans down to my Guitar Center anx tested out a lot of amps. I noticed there were no used Mesa's as I was entering the Mesa room while there were a lot of the other M's used. I left with an 04 Mesa Single Rectifier series 2 & Mesa Recto 2x12 horizontal cab with Celestion Vintage 30s. My buds were all saying why the single? Only a 2x12? I said, this is more than I'll ever need and that's if this band is successful. We weren't a band for long but still ever blue moon I warm up the Mesa and cause mass distiortion upon my neighborhood. I have been hearing a lot of negatives about the Celestion Vintage 30s in which I have 2 originals that came in my 2004 Mesa Recto 2x12 cab. Are these the stinkers everyone has been telling me about cause I have no other 12 inches to compare them to nor any other reference point beside my memory from buying them, how good they were compared to the others. Are these possible defects? I don't think so but I wanted to ask the expert or any enlightened viewer?
@manosgeorgoudakis6111
@manosgeorgoudakis6111 7 месяцев назад
Dear Uncle Glenn, following your advice and primarily because I wanted to see for myself what the big deal is with all - tube amps, I got myself a 6505+ combo and never regretted it. Much to my horror I realized that the local store manager of the second biggest music retailer (imagine Guitar Centre but much, much smaller) simply could not comprehend the difference between instrument cables and amp-to-cab cables (aka speaker cables) because a) they look the same and b) when he used instrument cable in place of speaker cable, nothing bad happened -according to him. So he was trying to convince me that a good instrument cable would be suitable to connect the 6505+ to a load box. I also realized that a good friend of mine and seasoned guitar player also didn’t have a clue about the subject. So, could you please, please consider making a not very fun but very informative video about TR, TRS, XLR, speaker and instrument and balanced and unbalanced cables? I had to take a crash course through all these to make sure I won’t fry my 6505+ combo when connecting it to load box and my Katana head with the cab. To be fair, not too many amp heads are sold these days for obvious reasons so this ignorance can be justified to some extent BUT NOT FOR THE PEOPLE THAT IT’S THEIR JOB to know better. I’ve been following the channel for 8 years now, I’m grateful for the free, unbiased advice (and the Element Bass I got a month ago plus freebies you give from time to time!). All the best from Greece.

After finding your channel I got more into speakers. This is something I had never even thought about until watching some of your videos. Swapping them around got annoying so I had an oversized 412 built with each speaker having it's own input. Pair that with a KHE amp switcher and run all of your amps through 4 different speakers to really find what you like! Blending has been fun too. The only thing I have to be mindful of is wattage. Thanks for always sharing your knowledge!

Glen - I have a comparison test I would propose to you. (That no one will do, I’ve asked others and they just ignore me 🤷🏻) speakers have an effect on each other in a cab…. Can you please test a 4x12” loaded with 4 matching drivers, measure the frequency response of the best sounding (to you) driver, and dB output level. Then change the other 3 drivers in the cab to drastically different speakers from different brands. Like an Alnico something or other, a Jenson, and maybe a hemp cone etcetera. Then measure the driver again and see how the other 3 drivers impact the response and output of “good sounding” driver. - In my opinion all the speakers should match in a cabinet, so they work together, similar to a line Array of speakers, it’s a great topic and it’s why a full stack loaded with 8 x12” drivers sounds so epic when stacked!? (Or wait?! Is this all in our heads?) - are there pros to mixing the drivers? Do we notice any cons? Less output, shifted frequency response etcetera. Thank you so much in advance!

Love your videos even though I do not always entirely agree with all your points. A great Marshall 100watt Super Lead is the only amp anyone would ever need. I don't care if you play Metal, Classic Rock, Country or CW, Pop whatever! That being said... we ALL changed our speaker in our Marshall cabs. We also would change cabinets but always come back to Marshall or some other cab with a similar dimension of space. It just is the best! Other things we changed (as you cite in your videos as making differences) strings brands and gauges, pre-amps (or if you are into torturing yourself pedals) and the guys who love the lows like us would plug in Sonic Maximizer. All these make differences and put together in a correct way will make a sound that buries any other live tone/sound. They are loud, the quietest settings you can get are the loudest combo sound you can imagine. They are heavy, difficult to haul, large.... yeah but OMG what a sound when you get it right! You are TOTALLY correct about mic placement. We always had preferred placement on mics as well as the rest of the room. My fav is a Co2 EV right over my low watt cel cone and direct in mixed together post. It gives a sharp tight tone while also keeping the live low muffly sounds. Even better put one in center of the room with the 2 listed right in the center of the ceiling. Nice magic to mix in! This being said Marshall Code amps by themselves mixed with Guitar Rig 5 or any later version is almost any tone your could ever dream of! Yeah it sounds lots like my actual 100watt Marshall recorded but it is easier to record by far faster and more reliable (keeping same tones for later overdubs is spot on!) Now live, practice Code makes much sense, in a band with live volumes 100 Watt Code it the way to go! As far as you saying speakers cannot be seen.... years ago I took off my tweed covers and drove to my local metal producer. I bought some expanded diamond metal squares that they shaped for me with presses then I cleaned it and had it black powder coated. When the idiots shot each other in front of my house I got the Police line tape the next day and added it across my grill. Yeah, you can see the speakers and the bright yellow tape makes you focus directly at them. This also protects them more from impact and assaults. It is a bit harder to work on but well worth the extra effort! The only reason I own multiple amps is multiple uses. I recently hung a Marshall 25 code to my ceiling in my bedroom which I can remove and use upstairs so I do not have to fuck with my one downstairs. They are great practice amps and recording use is also fantastic! Would I use one at band practice, only to show ideas between other people playing they are not loud enough. If you play louder you interact differently and you play differently then you normally do. Those little tricky things you think you have so well polished become almost un-managed and until you master it get pre-paired for a headache. I cannot tell you a lot about other rigs that "work" but I can tell you ones that do not compare. I can also tell you about what I found that does for sure work. If I find another way (as with the Marshall Code) I will incorporate and adapt. I hated the Code until a buddy of mine came over and helped me figure out how to adjust it. Once that was done (no thanks to Guitar Center employees with no clue or manuals on the amp they were selling new! WTF??) instantly I went home and bought one. I did not buy at GC because an employee came and asked me to turn down. I was not playing loudly at all and told her "Sure I will turn down, but it is because of you I will not buy anything today here" to which she stated "I don't care" and I could not say that better myself! My buddy and me drove 80 miles home and went to Sweetwater put 2 50 watt code cobos and code switches on a card. GC Loss about $900 total that day. I did not buy a few other times as well for that same reason. The lessons to take from my rant is Marshall is the bomb! It is THE BEST AMP ever!! The 100watt Superlead is a beast and if you can find one you do not even have to buy new get a used one it will likely be cheaper! Plus someone likely has done something cool to it before you did like change the speakers. If it has been neglected you can bring them back for about the cost of a shitty combo amp and surely cheaper than a lesser 100 watt other brand head. The other take away is get an amp for the use you need. My bedroom does not require a 100 watt superlead although admittedly I did used to store it in there for several years when I was younger and lived with other people just because no one wants that in the living room (where it lives now) except for other guitar players for some reason. My wife was not thrilled about the code hanging from the ceiling but oh well. She knows there are worse alternatives by now and is thankful I am as practical as I have become.
