Coming from an ex-smoker cigarette stains are no joke and can affect everything in the home. I've worked in an old building doing construction and when I had to demo a suite of an old tenant I saw the outline of nicotine stains, that's when I decided to stop smoking. It's been 30 years now.
I'll just go outside. Smoking since I was 16, I'm 32 now. However, I don't rub the ashes on walls, interior walls/exterior walls. etc. But they calm me down. But good for you quitting. :)
the only problem with that is nicotine on it's own doesn't leave stains, nicotine is a stimulant drug, it's tar that leaves those stains. nicotine is like caffeine in soda, it's a stimulant. tar is the yellow sticky substance.
Usually, smokers don’t realize how much they and everything around them reeks. They are around it all the time and end up thinking it’s normal. It’s really difficult to clean thoroughly…and expensive.
I use to clean homes as a job I had in high school. We went into this one home that belonged to a smoker that moved out. I cleaned the bathroom mirror and yellow tar rub off the mirror it was nasty. The whole place smelt awful the carpet had to be replaced the walls had to be cleaned like 4 times I thought the walls were yellow when we were done the walls were white just a nasty habit
I was FORCED to sit by an old lady heavy smoker ( she had stains on fingers fine lines around lips etc) SHE STANK TO HIGH HEAVENS HAD the lipstick on her teeth etc I COULDNT wait to get away from the stench I also KNOW you can paint over nicotine with killez paint just fine
I love episodes when then plaintiff ends up owing at the end. Plaintiffs are complete liars. I love how at the end the plaintiff says he was doing this to advocate for renters rights…. Dude, you LOST!
You can never convince indoor smokers how disgusting they make things... until they quit, then they'll notice in short order. As long as they smoke though, the smoke just magically goes away, and the aroma of a dead hog in the summer heat, that's just something coincidentally outside every smoker's house.
years ago most of us didn't care about the smell, and cigarettes decades ago didn't leave as much of a yellow covering on things. I'd say for the last 30 yrs they've become more destructive cosmetically, they're also more smoky and stink more. they were this bad way back when. lots of us though were around smoke 24/7 since we were kids, that's well over 60 years of cigarette smoke exposure, so far quite a lot of us are still here and doing well. I can't say the same for those I know who never smoked & never lived in a smoking household. Radon is really the thing to worry about, radon comes in second to cigarettes, and it's in your home right now. we've all been exposed to it.
My partner used to smoke for more than 25 years. He quit for his health. Not too long after quitting he was "amazed" at all the new things he could smell; he never realized there was a pizza joint right in his area. He would NEVER smoke inside his own home and would make sure to change clothes if meeting with people; he was inspired to give a fok by seeing how gross other smokers could be 🤭
That's not just a smoker those people are ignorant as well. I smoked for 10 years before quitting and I HATED visiting anyone who smoked in their house. I always thought it was disgusting. And I refused to sleep at someone's house if they did. Never smoked in my house, just went outside and I used to smoke a lot too. Now that I quit it just bothers me even more.
@Hi Friends🍿 I was the same way when I used to smoke. Brushing my teeth, changing clothes, I always thought it was rude to force others to smell it. But tbf I did grow up in a house that was non smoking so I knew how much nicer it was.
@@MalloriaAnn My partner grew up in a non smoking house too. So that's probably a thing, not being exposed to second hand smoke growing up. .... Kudos for being a considerate former cigarette smoker lol 👍// A lot of the time it's "the small things" that help distinguish civilized people from the rest of the crowd imo
@@testerone5390 the one we’re talking about here was against the plaintiff-the person who filed the civil suit. They filed a lawsuit for $2000 and ended up having to pay the defendant $400 and change. What do you mean by your question?
@@testerone5390the loser of the case always exits and gets interviewed first. Can’t remember who exits first in a double $0 if there was a counterclaim.
The fact that a landlord allows you to smoke is irrelevant. If you choose to smoke inside, you choose to lose a chunk of your security deposit to clean and remove the nicotine and smell.
this landlord likely spent the deposit. when they spend it they come back with damages to lower the amt they have to come up with if any at all. the more sensational the "damages" the less they have to fork over. textbook case.
Exactly. Just because your lease allows you to live in the apartment and go to the bathroom, doesn't mean you get to crap in the living room. You can smoke in the place (assuming that was actually ever agreed to) but you're also responsible for doing so responsibly and cleaning up after you leave. By the way, I love the BBQ story. So it's cool that you supposedly had a BBQ 5 feet from the door, splattered BBQ sauce every where, and then leave it like that?
Yep. I am super sensitive to smoke. Even old smoke damage can make me have breathing issues. Smoke outside with the windows CLOSED. Period. NEVER inside. The smell and stains require professional removal and can cause other people health issues.
It was the neighbor's pit bull!!! Yeah, right. They must have smoked 24/7 in that apartment to get that nasty. Just because you rent doesn't mean that you can't wash the blinds and the walls. Any place I ever rented looked better when I left than it did when I moved in.
Hi. With respect to leaving a home better than you received it, that’s 100% my Mom, too. Landlords are ALWAYS upset when she moves, because of the way she cares for their home and property.
I always did the same thing. I smoked in my last rental but I cleaned *everything* with vinegar, water & lemon oil. Carpets and ceilings included 😅 But I got every penny of my deposit back 😎
People think because they rent the landlord will clean once they leave um no it’s your responsibility why’ll renting to keep the place clean it’s not hard to do. Just shows how nasty you are leaving the place a mess like that
Getting rid of tobacco stains off walls is much harder than the landlord let on. A friend and I were repainting the inside of my parents' home. We started on one wall as a test. No matter how much we scrubbed with TSP, the stains would bleed through primer and paint. My dad and I were able to find a primer to cover the staining. At the time it was $75 a gallon. Even then the stain bleed through the primer, it did not bleed through the regular paint. The whole house had to have that primer and paint.
As a smoker myself I Never smoke inside. I’ve seen first hand what it does to walls alone lol. I own my own home, never would I allow anyone to smoke In my house. Even in a blizzard you see my dumbass outside sucking one down. No one else needs to be affected for my stupid habits.
@@knyan4806 you need to read the original comment again. They were saying how hard it is to get rid of smoke stains. Even harder than the landlord said to the Judge. Which means they are supporting the landlord. Get it? 🙄
if it's that hard to get out, especially if it's bleeding through paint, then it's not tar stains & is likely mold. Those are hallmark mold symptoms. Aspergillus mold does what you're describing, it'll look JUST like tar from cigarettes, but it bleeds through like that & clings to the walls and it can have an odor. I lived in a home that had aspergillus and I've lived in many homes of (and with) smokers, the smoking homes didn't have this but the home with aspergillus very much did. what many think are cigarettes staining everything is usually a specific type of mold.
Yep I watch dogs sometimes but I require that I watch it at that person's house. I'm not having a strange dog in my house. The dog is probably more comfortable at their own home anyway.
She use to wear dresses and but almost always heels but she fell on one episode coming down from the bench and after that, I've noticed it's been sneakers.
😃 I love Milian's kicks & jeans. It must've been Casual Friday, although I'll bet the producers couldn't care less what she wears after 20+ years on the show. 🙂
The plantiffs knew they owed money to the man, which is why they didn't reply back to him once he sent them notice about their deposit. They were just mad about the collections so they tried to take a chance at getting money back... They actually came out better than what they came to court with. They owed 1k with collection, but now they only owe 400, so they were able to take 600 off their debt.
I didn’t believe anything they said if the blinds were on the door how did the bbq splash sauce on the blinds what do you have the bbq in the doorway like what
First, smoking destroys homes and no amount of cleaning/disinfecting will help. I would never buy a home of a smoker. Second, the plaintiffs and the people outside were complete morons.
Exactly, a family member passed away and she was a heavy smoker. The whole house was literally yellow and the walls and ceilings were sticky. Every single inch of the house had to be cleaned and repainted. Carpet and padding also replaced, it was bad. If you smoke, go outside and don't stay inside.
@@randyvac01 Smokers stink too...actually, they stink and everything around them stinks. Smokers with pets can be very filthy people. I used to work for Carpeteria and I can tell you some disgusting stories about smokers with pets. 🤢🤮 I'm talking so bad the floorboards had to be pulled up and replaced. Vile!
how did us non smokers ever live years ago inside homes with smokers...I don't remember any of us freaking out & being dramatic over it. When I looked for a house to buy I never refused to buy a house of a smoker...lol that would just be silly. Christ, everyone smoked years ago and I don't remember as a non smoker it ever being some horrible national incident. are people incapable of acting like mature adults these days or something???
Plaintiffs: "The landlord collected a security deposit in case there were damages from our smoking." Defendant: "There was damage from their smoking." Plaintiffs: "That's not fair!
What is it with tenants having the balls to sue landlords they owe money to. Of course they’re entitled selfish smokers too who don’t think rules apply to them.
I’ve never told a potential landlord I was a smoker when I viewed an apartment. They always asked me first. And that’s the most ridiculous story that it was a neighbors dog who was constantly at their house… That $100 a month for pet rent is equally ridiculous. Pets don’t have jobs!!!
You should never smoke in the house. My ex owned his own homes and he never smoked cigarettes inside. He also knew I was allergic so he didn’t even like me going out with him.
Smoikers are disgusting people. They seem to ignore the fact that the smoke and tar gets into everything - carpets, blinds, curtains, ceilings and walls. Of course they should pay for all the damage they cause. And of course the sort of people who smoke are the sort of people that would want a pit-bull. Horrible people. So oblivious of just how disgusting their behavior is that they have the audacity to sue the landlord who is left having to clean up and fix the damages they did.
Smoke damage is no joke. And I’m a smoker! Just don’t smoke inside yall. You may be a smoker but that doesn’t mean everyone in the house is. In my humble opinion, it’s like putting alcohol in every drink in the house when you have roommates.
Lol every time I see cases like this, I’m reminded of why I don’t think I could handle the amount of aggravation and stress that comes with being a landlord.
I used to be a cleaner and we had to clean a smokers house. They smoked indoors and they knew how bad it was. We walked in and the smell hit me like a pile of bricks. Within 5 minutes of being there I had a massive headache and my chest started to hurt. We were there for 10 minutes, before I was like I can't. I was physically ill after for the rest of the day. Every surface was caked in brown goo from the buildup
I'm a smoker and my parents smoke and I got their place when they moved out and omg that shit was hell to get off the wall. Took me a week to sand a dresser down because it gummed up the sand paper so much I had to keep changing it. So I get his frustration.
He tries to validate a lot of his statements with "You can ask (blank) if you want" My experience with a friend who turned out to be a habitual liar was this very thing she would do!
At 13:00, that is the look of someone that is ready to kill a snitching neighbour. Honey, your dog trampled her flowers and shat in her garden, that friendship is over)
That man is almost 50 years old and has never rented an apartment? I’m from Alabama and what he said about families providing homes for their families just isn’t true. Alabama is like anywhere else.
The defendant is absolutely correct regarding the nicotine stained walls, blinds, curtains, cabinets, and everything else in the property. I had rental property that stated in the lease that it was a "no smoking of any kind or anything property.." I reminded the tenant on numerous occasions that she signed a lease forbidding smoking. When she moved out, my entire apartment was ruined and basically had to be completely remodeled. I had to physically wash every wall, ceiling, door, window, trim work, lights, and ceiling fans. The fans had a nightlight setting on them with a beautiful glass fixture that separated it from the rest of the lights. I also had to replace all the carpeting and the fabric blinds. It took me over a month to get my walls and ceings clean enough to be sealed with an odor/stain block primer called Kilz. No matter how much you wash the walls, nicotine stains and smell can not be removed enough to paint over. The stains and smell will still come through. My ceiling fans had nicotine in the nightlight, which is considered a sealed part of the fans. It was so thick that I had to scrape it off. I went through more cleaning supplies to clean that one apartment than I have in all of my years renting out properties. By the time I was finished, everything I used to cleaned it had to go in the trash, and my hands looked like they had been dyed orange, and I wore gloves. The smell, stains, and cigarette burns in the carpet were so bad I had to remove all the carpet and pad and wash and seal the wood floors before I could put new carpet in. It took me nearly 4 months to restore my property, and it cost me over $7,500.00, which was with me doing all the work. I had the carpet put in by installers, but I removed the old carpet and pad and sealed the floors myself. I can't even begin to imagine what it would have cost me to have all the work done by contractors. I don't think JM really realized just how bad a home gets when people smoke in it. It causes extreme damage, and it can devastate the homeowners' finances far worse than it did mine. Needless to say, I sued her and won, but at that time, the small claims court was limited to $5,000.00. I lost money doing it myself, I would never have been able to pay someone to do the work. The contractors that I did talk to wouldn't paint over washed walls and ceilings, they wanted to remove all the sheetrock, doors and trim work and put in new, for thousands of dollars that I didn't have. Tenants who smoke in the house don't think the landlord can tell they are smoking in the house because they can't smell it. Smokers are used to the smell, but for anyone that doesn't smoke, the smell is very obvious as soon as they enter the property and as with mine, before ever opening the door. There are a lot of great tenants and landlords out there. Unfortunately, there are also bad ones on both sides, who ruin it for the good ones.
Can't stand when defendants continue their mansplain after judge has interrupted them for the waste of her time while they talk about what they think SHOULD be important for her to know. It obviously isn't but they can't resist the opportunity to school a professional women.
I’m a smoker, I NEVER smoke inside though. I also can’t be anywhere where they smoke inside (I do miss doing it in bars though 😉) I’m also always respectful of my butts. I don’t like to punish anyone for my nasty habit ☹️.
Never hate anyone, and don't hate smokers. Out of all of the addictions , smoking is the hardest to quit, hands down!! People usually start as teens. Thinking it's cool and grown up. Then they find themselves in a full terrible situation, they are hooked 😢. Pray for their recovery and strength to quit.😊
I hear ya. Yet cleaning up after a smoker’s home is OMG an enormous task. Every single inch has to be scrubbed, scrubbed, and scrubbed… prepped and/or repainted. It is a LOT of work. Buckets and buckets and buckets of yellow/brown water. (Ask me how I know. Lol.)
Smoking is NOT the hardest to quit. It's not even close! Quitting smoking does NOT cause severe pain or possible death. Go talk to an addict, drugs or alcohol.
@@slmel7it IS one of the hardest addictions to quit. Depending on who you talk to or read, it is definitely in the top 5. My therapist said that food was the hardest addiction to quit and smoking was the second, however everyone had their own opinion and even google isn’t consistent with their sources/answers. The stats on what is the worst change depending on what you read and where you read it.
