He had one great run at the crucible and fair play. He's a world champion forever. Otherwise, his career has been very average in comparison to the great players throughout the years. Hendry has earned the right to criticise whoever he likes
Clearly Brecel's achievements have not reached Hendry's but he is still way better than 'average', with 4 ranking titles he's already 18th on all time list at age just 29.
It must be very difficult for Stephen Hendry to understand the attitude of a player like Brecel when in his day he was so completely focused on winning.
I was trying to think of a nice way to say this! Well done. And especially difficult when Stephen can’t play well anymore. He’s also frustrated by Murphy’s insistence on commentating AND playing, which Hendry thinks is keeping Murphy from realizing his potential.
Luca can do what he wants, he doesn't owe anyone anything. Maybe snooker just isn't as important to him now he's achieved the goal of being WC. Maybe he's another Nico Rosberg.
@@tonester09 @tonester09 Lets remember the standard he had to play back when he won so many titles the only real competitors he had was Davis and White. Ronnie won most of his titles with a much stronger field with so many top players that can win it any day just to name a few Trump, Wilson, Higgins, Selby, Williams, Robertson, Allen, Murphy the list goes on and on. So in conclusion he was a great player for the opponents he had to face, did he have any of the type of opponents I mentioned he would definitely not have won much or any. Ronnie O'Sullivan is 🐐
This video clearly shows the difference in mindset between 2 players who are both talented beyond what normal humans can comprehend, but one is a 7 times world champion and the other very definitely isn't.
2:50 "He's hardly won a match since his World Championship". That is absurdly untrue!! Brecel last season won 21 out of 35 matches including getting to 2 finals, a very healthy 60% and £337,000! Facts! So much better than blether!
Spot on m8, he comes across quite boastful almost when he says that he doesn't have to practice & stuff! Even Ronnie had to put in the hard yards in winning all those events.
@@mcvicarross7 yeah he's not a natural winner and doesn't have that killer instinct and winner mentality. he'll never be a game's great. he loves to say he doesn't practice because it gives him an excuse when he loses.
@@holyromancrown totally agree m8, I used to quite like watching him but knowing the talent he had I did find him to be a bit of an enigma & quite frustrating to watch but when I heard him speaking & laughing about his lack of need to practice I found it quite off puting!
Not having the same talent as Hendry doesn't imply that his point isn't valid. But nevertheless you need to be tunnel visioned if yo want to get anywhere, in anything.
Snooker isn't a priority for Luca. It's just an enjoyable part time job for him. He won the lottery at the 2023 world championship, & the resulting sponsorship deals he got back home resulting from that achievement - & it seems to be enough for him. It's a little bit sad - snooker needs these players with unique ability, but the responsibility of stardom seems to be to much for Luca....
Probably the main difference between Brecel last year to this year is the fact he’s now very fat ,he also looks like he doesn’t want to be near a snooker table either .Poor standard at the crucible this year all round .Brecel is obviously a very naturally talented player and maybe doesn’t need to put in quite as much work as someone like Kyren Wilson ,strange thing is Wilson and Brecel are polar opposites but I can’t see either of them winning the worlds again for totally different reasons .
That will drop considerably when the points come off next year. He is only number 4 based on winning 500k from the world title. He will probably drop to 20 like Neil did.
Totally understand what Hendry is saying though ,you would think he would want to push on and win more ,so you have to question and say is he bothered that much ,and it doesn’t look like he is at the moment
Many middle range players won worldwide championships, but failed to continue on winning big tournaments. Joe johnson, Peter ebdon, graeme dott, and possibly kyren wilson. I guess Luca Brecel is no exception
Not everyone wants to win or chase fame. Maybe he's happy just making a living from the game. Stephen Maguire is another who is happy just making a living from the game. He doesn't want fame or any limelight. Play snooker then slink off into obscurity. That's what they seem to like. Leave them be.
Yeah, seems like that. He's content which is something Hendry could never be regardless how much he won. One could also argue who is the happier of the two... 😊 I'll take Luca's chilled attitude any day
I reckon Luca is the Jenson Button of snooker, he was happy to be the best for 1 year and is happy to have a good career after that. He's living his dream, I think. Well done Luca. Enjoy the spoils.
Whole lot of armchair players in this mf comment section. Anyone, at all, that’s watched Luca play cannot possibly deny his talent. Watch his crucible run, again. That was not even relatively a fluke. He can do it again. Priorities askew? Maybe. But he doesn’t owe a god damn person a thing other than himself. Let the man live his life, jfc. Steven has a lot of nerve to say he’s “hardly won a match” when he’s literally over 60% win rate and +300,000 since winning. Wildly inaccurate take
Luca is a one hit wonder. You can not treat this game like that and get away with it. Look at the greats or multi champions. None of them took practice or the game lightly. End of discussion.
I think it must be very difficult to remain focused on one thing and value that when it can be really frustrating and you are under the microscope to a degree. When something becomes your career then it can be more difficult to derive pleasure from it in the same way. Some people accept that and others instead treat the sport in a less professional way in order to not drive themselves crazy with seeking that 1% of improvement at all times like someone like Hendry or Davis would have. Brecel was always a bit of a shock winner who was very talented at his best but a bit variable in terms of performance. I can understand in a small way because I also played a cue sport (although the money and interest side isn't there so the comparison ends there). I was fine for about a decade when I was getting better then when I started competing at the top in my country and more regularly it just never became fun any more. It was nothing to do with winning or losing. Prior to that I'd enjoyed just playing the game and I didn't by that time. I'd spent too long in the same places doing the same thing and had started to regret doing so. My game was at its strongest but my desire to play was at its lowest. Hanging around pubs and clubs is fine in your teens and early twenties but it gets very samey after that. How many times can you walk around a table with a bit of wood, hitting balls? Brecel strikes me as someone who has, at some point prior to even winning the WC, had that same sort of feeling and has decided not to put all of himself into snooker and chasing glory. I think he won the WC despite that.
Depends on what he wants to achieve. If winning one world title is what he wanted, then all good. Nico Rosberg in F1 did the same and retired. I'm sure Luca may look at his goals and reevaluate and go again.
I understand where Hendry is coming from, Brecel has so much talent but just doesn't put the work in. It feels like his career could go two completely different ways and his attitude is the deciding factor. I can't see him winning another world.
I think luca is still to excited and happy to play any snooker the way he was he won the world championship and all that money and a nice car and I think he is just partying his money away he should be concentrating on his snooker career because he can play well next he will run out of money I do not think he will win the world championship again 😒🍻🍹🚘💰🥳🎂
I can tell you right now that Luca Brecel is an absolute phenom. He is the same talent bracket as Ronnie O'Sullivan. However, he has always been the product of his fathers ambition. I dont think he loves snooker that much. He gave up his childhood to playing snooker and he won the world championship for his dad bit now hes done it he has no ambitions left. Without ambition he will surely fail.
@@TimmyRipkey-zj7sg don't be a fool. Just watch videos of brecel when he was a kid ffs. Look at how he won the world championships. He was 6 frames down to Ronnie and beat him. That was not a fluke. I would suggest that you don't understand the game to say something so stupid tbh.
@@slottyken Guy has literally never won a match at the worlds, outside of winning the whole thing.......that's practically the definition of it being a fluke.
Its a shame because he is one of the very few exciting players to watch. Snookers great but too many boring players. The game lacks characters/personalitys. Hope he comes back to form soon.
No one cares about being number 1 anymore, times change, it's to hard now, he's won the WC, so hes achieved all he will ever ask for, he's never gonna keep that form up
Good player. But for me he needs to work on his b game. Anyone can pot balls from the lampshade. Look at trump he used to. But now he's worked on his safety game. Hes a completely different animal. Hes a winning machine. Needs the same mentality. Needs the hunger.
@@clanavit8260 100 percent. Jack is the same. Hes to nice. Doesn't have the b game or the killer instinct to be a winner. Hendry in his day was nasty. Had no respect for anyone.
The guy needs to sort his attitude out. We know what he's capable of when he's on top of his game, but he's been nowhere even remotely near the same since. I'm amazed he's managed to stay so high up in the ranking.
