There's also the safety aspect of castrating a bull calf,I work on a farm here in the uk and I was knocked down by a 6month old bull calf he broke my ribs ,so even at 6 months old they can be quite dangerous,here our beef cattle are marketed between 18 and 24 months old with a few being sold at 30 months

Gotta do this on one of my new ram lambs. Should be pretty easy. Most the time I walk out there he’s just laying around.

Words of advice...never underestimate a lazy animal. That's how we ended up chasing Duke and Beaux last year!

That seemed a lot easier than the time Mrs NG and I were there. I still clinch when I see that device even though it is not me.

Much easier. We learned from last year how to get him without busting through the fence

When I had the vet here to disbud my calf, he told me he has had to "correct" castrations where the owner couldn't count to 2. 😜
@bigbearhomestead
@bigbearhomestead 3 года назад
Yes it is very important to make sure you have both of them before you place the castration band.

Great video that was surprisingly easy we did piglets this year for the first time that was intense we use castrating pliers on our goats and that’s easy but pigs 🐷 cut and tear was kinda gruesome lol I know you know what I’m talking about lol

Hello @Big Bear Homestead ! Thank you for sharing this. I want to try this with our new baby bull but I don't think we can get him away from his mama and she gets a bit aggressive. I think we might need to buy something to isolate her with. Thanks in advance for any advice you can share! God bless!
@bigbearhomestead
@bigbearhomestead 2 года назад
The best way is to have two paddocks. Mom in one and calf in the other, have the paddock close together and then separate the paddock over time.

Thanks for sharing this video. May I ask how old that calf was and what breed? I’m a first time cattle owner with black angus and I just banded a bull calf that was almost 9 weeks old. I only weigh but a buck fifty and my calf was stronger (and larger) than the one you banded. I required the help of someone putting the calf on his side and holding his legs while I banded him. Are your bulls always that docile when you band them by strattling his body and holding up one of the hind quarters the way you did? You ever been kicked when holding his leg up that way?
@bigbearhomestead
@bigbearhomestead 11 месяцев назад
Well we didn't wait that long to band him, for that exact reason. The cow that was his mom was three years old. So far I have never been kicked. That might have something to do with his age.... thanks for watching

@@bigbearhomestead For future reference, do you recommend banding bull calves in their 1st week after being born (minus the 1st 24 hrs)?
@bigbearhomestead
@bigbearhomestead 11 месяцев назад
I think the general rule is between 2 and 4 weeks. After about 3 months, you are struggling to restrain the calf long enough to place the band properly.

Can you do this to a 250 pound bull
@bigbearhomestead
@bigbearhomestead Год назад
If you have the right equipment. I imagine you would need a headgate and a chute to immobilize him. We usually castrate ours around 4 months old.
