I had to pause the episode when I heard that and take what he just said in. Spike was a top-tier MC since episode 1. One of the best quotes I’ve ever heard.
I just realized, during the final fight with Vicious, Spike's real left eye is forced closed due to his blood covering it, leaving him to only be able to look out of his right eye, the one he "sees the past" with
he was the only one in the group who didn’t learn to leave the past behind, in the last fight he was solving issues from the past, so he just looked with the eye that sees the past, I think that’s it
As I get older I connect with this show so much more. Your past really do haunts you (old relationships, old friends, people you've lost, different career paths, missed opportunities) ... you do carry that weight.
Damn that's right i can't forget my first love that I even can't contact now, she's very far from me with another guy I will not see it in the rest of my life and that's make me sad not only her but all my friends that I losed really life is no sense when u are alone in this cruel world
Missed opportunities is the one which js hurting me a lot currently fuck Covid !! Now I am aimlessly wandering in the space idk I feel my future gonna be cheap
Wow, I read this just as Spike went, "I was going to find out if I'm really alive". Really puts it into perspective, he thought about his past his whole life, and he needed to go back to feel alive. He was always looking back, and maybe he did feel alive in his final moments, but doesn't change the fact that he spent his life trying to convince himself he was alive without ever moving on and making a new story of his own. The Syndicate and his past relationships left a lasting mark on him, and that's all he ever defined himself by. It's so strange especially considering how static a character he is. I guess you could say he didn't have much character development, but the story was so perfect that his static character made sense, and is so loved because of the truth and bits of reality he holds. Sometimes, it's people's destiny to never move on. So in that sense, Spike didn't just think about the past right before his death, he chose his past to be his demise.
@@BB-qs7rl I guess you could see it both ways, whether he wasted his life not getting over his old love and past, or him finally returning to it was a form of closure for him, but in this case I meant his 'demise' as his death.
@@hafsaaleem5688 You can see it both ways. But in Spike's final scenes there are songs about everlasting love and the afterlife, Spike seeing Julia as his present, glowing white lights and flying birds. It's pretty obvious what is being implied.
Wow it sounds so meaningful, until you realize that statement is just not true lmao. The entire series is full of sayings that appear to be deep but are outright false or extremely shallow. It's pretentious, bad writing
I love how crazy and energetic the cowboy bebop universe is, but at the same time there’s brief periods where you don’t know the story of so many perspectives and you’re kind of lost in this big space world with nothing but 4 people. That speaks more loneliness than having just one character’s journey
Imagine how lonely people will be if space travel ever gets affordable for regular folks. "Imma fly to Jupiter!" Six years later a shuttle shows up in Jupiter orbit with the five and a half year old moldy remains of somebody who couldn't hack being off FaceBook for 24 hours.
"Im not going there to die, i'm going there to find out if I'm really alive" is one of those modern pieces of literature that could literally come from an ancient text piece and be passed down for hundreds of years as a bone chilling line.
Check point: This week I was diagnosed with fibrosis on my liver and at the rate its going, it doesnt look good. I always come back to this song when looking into the void. Brothers, do not fear death, look at it straight in the eyes, raise your hand, point at death. Bang!
If you are still out there, I hope the best for you. If you are not. I'll see you in sovngarde brother. All the best and my regards to you and your family.
I think that Faye realized that her past was gone in the last couple of episodes- so she showed more empathy towards spike and jet and even edward because I think she finally realized that these people WERE her family, even if they weren't related by blood. I think she convinced herself she belonged some place else, when in reality she was right where she needed to be. And when she finally realized this, the crew disbanded.
Yes. And that was just as much a kick in the gut as Spike's death, or Ed and Ein's departure. The lesson of the show, for me, is don't let the past be your master, pay attention to the here and now. It is all you really have.
That shit is so symbolic Bc at the end of episode six he said the same thing, although back then he wasn’t ready to die, but he said it at the end signifying he’s ready
It’s about those stuck frozen in time, unable to move forward because they know the end result isn’t what they want so they float in their ship. But one day are forced to meet with their fate, for Faye realizing that she has no home and no family and has to move on. Jet had to let go of a love lost to time that was represented by the watch. Spike his fight with Vicious and his postponed death, he knew that his love would die, and he knew that the end would come for him and Vicious when he decided to step forward back into his own life his own fate.
When you see the series you expect an episodical slice of life action anime, where everything happens and absolutely nothing backfires in the next episode. You feel like these characters could be there forever, following their arc cycle (Faye going away, Jet staying alone in the Bebop, Spike trying to get himself killed), but no. These dudes have lived enough; Faye is close to being 80, Jet has countless stories with the police and Spike had a bloody past before. Therefore, they won't be here for long; so when you become attached to the anime, when you feel you can stay watching them forever, the final episode comes up, just after 26 episodes, and Spike dies. That's when you notice you weren't watching a compelling story, a great purpose, a big mission; you were just seeing the last days of a doomed man. During those days, he meets some people, but in the end, his ending is already written. His days have already expired, now he's living his last nightmare after waking up alongside the woman of his dreams. This is why this series is incredible... it's too unique.
The real meaning of Cowboy bebop is in acceptance of the unexpected things in life. Life can get pretty fucked up at times but you always have the final say on how you are going to react. You might feel otherwise but the reality is that things just happen to you, no rhyme or reason. You get to decide how you're gonna take it, and what your next step will be. When things go wrong or I'm faced with a seemingly insurmountable hardship, sometimes, I look in the mirror and say to myself; "Whatever happens, happens..." as a Taoist reminder to go with the flow. It's pretty good, actually. 😌
absolutely, and it also shows that even though people get stuck in the past even to the point that they can't even see their present, life will still push you along no matter what, and whether or not you're aware of it, even if you think your life is empty, the present is always there with you, just sometimes you can't seem to see it. It is very Taoist when you think about it.
As much as I love all these characters, can we get take a moment to appreciate Jet and how he held the crew together the most, even if it often included his poor cooking skills. He was the Mom of the Bebop and his past may not be the main focus, but it is still just as tragic.
jet is honestly my favorite, before ed. he's just the next stage of someone like faye or spikes life. i like to think he hangs around them because they remind jet of himself.
"Whatever happens, happens" will forever be one of my favorite lines from anime for the rest of my life. While Bebop is shorter than many out there it really told a lot in such little time which is why I cherish it as one of my top favorites. 🚬
To this day I feel bad for Faye and Jet being left alone on the ship together which was one filled with life and possibilities, 2 amazing crewmates and a dog that was the cherry on top. It's a shame it all ended so fast and too soon.
I almost lost sense of reality thanks to watching this to the end. But it's such an impactful and deep masterpiece that i think everybody should watch. This experience , living with the Bebop crew, is worth the pain and the joy it would gift you☕
Andreas Barcelona Agreed. I’d even be satisfied with a spin-off for characters completely unrelated to this story so long as it takes place in the same universe. I also wish I could forget this show to experience it for the first time again
@@foobarbazquux Personally i would like to see how jet and faye were doing alone and perhaps how well they would work together. Also i would love to see where did ed with ein went, or if they ended up with ed's father.
foobarquux I think that was the point. Someone put it best when they said that Bebop is the epilogue to a story we never see. All of the characters have had their defining experience and now we merely see the aftermath and consequences of what happened in the past
In the story, Spike seemed to never fear death despite almost dying in many situations. We saw this as just him being brave or living a life that accepts fate unconditionally. The last episode finally revealed that he was bothered at how carefree he is when faced with certain death. In a way, you can say fearing death is part of being alive. To not fear death made Spike question if he was really alive. He wanted to find out, and what better way than to confront his past, the one thing that was sure to kill him.
Rest in peace Keiko Nobumoto you brought a masterpiece into the lives of bebop fans everywhere. This anime touched my soul and changed my life. Thank you. See you space cowgirl 💫
Dunno, I don't really enjoy English cast. I prefer original Japanese voices and Anilibria dub version, however it's in Russian, so it's not for everyone. English cast feels somewhat unreal. Which is strange because there are many great shows with English voice acting, but almost every anime dubbed in English seems unpleasant, at least for me
I love how the show takes the stories of 4 outcasted and broken people and intercuts them into an almost episodic narrative that creates a massive impact by the end. It’s very impressive storytelling
I wanted Spike and Faye to be together so much but it's also calming that the anime didn't push the two together. So I'm relieved that what I wanted to happen didn't... *Strange*
Maybe it's because in every film or cartom the main lead always falls in love with a woman beside him and it always ends happily. Our heart knows we don't want that
Today I finished Cowboy Bebop. It's left me speechless. Spike just kept on going, watching everyone close to him die. In the end, it felt as if he accepted life and death, looking back at the past, and seeing it all as just a dream.
Spike died. His death was foreshadowed since episode one. Just within the last ten minutes of the final episode (including the end credits), the tiger striped cat story made it clear that he wasn't coming back. Jet knew it. Faye knew it. Spike knew it. The song that plays immediately after Spike leaves the Bebop, starts thinking about Julia and then attacks the syndicate is literally about how he will love Julia forever and be with her in the afterlife. He even says to Vicious "Julia passed away. Let's end it all." He kills Vicious but is slashed across the stomach. Vicious dies quickly, Spike slowly because a snake's venom poisons slowly after the bite. After Vicious falls dead on the ground, Spike looks up to the night's sky. The camera focuses in on his right eye. He sees Julia. He is finally seeing her in the eye that sees the present. Meaning she is now his present. He is immediately covered in a white heavenly light. Next we see him it is day and he is now smiling. He says "Bang." drops and is never shown moving again. Spike saying "Bang." is a call back to Wen and Spike acknowledging that he now understands the relief that comes with death. We follow the ascension of his soul into the heavens while a song about ascending to heaven plays. We see the same doves that flew by Julia when she died, fly over Spike. We see Spike's star fade, but never fall. Meaning that he made it to the great spirit that awaits us all.
Too much symbolism analysis for me. I don't give a damn if Spike died; What I care about is that his story concluded. He found Julia and saw her die, and finally ended Vicious and the rest of the Red Dragons who made up his pre-Bebop life. The loose ends have been burned. It doesn't matter if Spike himself died, or just the 'old' Spike who's stuck in the past; But Cowboy Bebop is over. No continuations, no sequels, no cliffhangers. That being said, dude's definitely dead. Too many hints to that end, and the creator's statements to the contrary were probably just to calm people down.
@@ImmortanDan You may not care about symbolism but the creators clearly did. More than anything I described what was shown. If you have a problem with it go get mad at the anime.
What I would say is you don't need to escape or forget the past, just don't forget that the present is always there going on, even if you can't see it, even if you think your life is empty or over, remember that you are being pushed along to new situations, new experiences no matter what.
I came here expecting to see the scene where Spike explains his eyes, but instead I got some silky smooth music built around a great anime with a large glass of nostalgia. Thank you. I'll carry this weight.
"I’ve been seeing the past in one eye, and the present in the other, so I thought I could only see patches of reality, never the whole picture." "I felt like I was watching a dream I’d never wake up from… Hmp. Before I knew it, the dream was all over." - Spike Spiegel
"Depersonalization can consist of a detachment within the self, regarding one's mind or body, or being a detached observer of oneself. Subjects feel they have changed and that the world has become vague, dreamlike, less real, lacking in significance or being outside reality while looking in." - Wikipedia. I'm 33 yo, and i was diagnosed with that like 6 months ago due to a depression cause my mother killed herself 5 years ago, all your emotions feels like strange and if anything was real at all like living in a dream, that's why you need to find out if you are really living because anything feels real. I can say that is painful when you try to find a meaning and get yourself together, because you need to rewire all your emotions. Anyways, i can understand now how Spike Spiegel was feeling, this is a deep anime, blows your mind in pieces, i watched it when i was 17 yo. Everyone of us need a meaning, please listen Dr. Jordan B. Peterson and try to get yourself together. Be responsible and truthful. Nobody cares maybe but thank you.
This is absolute gold. Creations like this are what make the mind go to places that people think are impossible to find. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
When I was younger, I could understand this Anime to a certain degree. Mainly I just watched it for the action. But now that I'm older and a bit wiser this anime was more than the action. I never understood what it exactly means to "carry that weight". Now that life has hit me harder... I understand it now more than ever
Ping Pong the Animation is underrated also. Like Cowboy Bebop, it has depth and unique style but it isn't as dark. Do they still make animes like Cowboy Bebop anymore with the dark theme and noir stuff?
@@halowarrior917 for older fans, sure. Nowadays, itll get bumped off those top 5-10 lists by “AOT” “My Hero…” “Demon Slayer”, and “One Punch Man”. All decent shows, but to each their own.
@@citystar2318 me, my #1 is Yu Yu Hakusho and I've only really watched anime since I was 15 or 16 and I'm 25: now. I've seen both big ones and more obscure slice of life animes. Toradora is my favorite slice of life tbh
For me (even though not shown) its the way he tells faye and even Jet how he HAS to do this. I relate to that emotion so hard. Some things you can’t help but feel and based off your past it can lead you to make decisions only you understand even if that decision can be detrimental to you...
The construction of the Cowboy bebop universe is so masterfully executed. Anyone can see the time and effort put into the writing. Not many anime or manga can stand the test of time the same way that we've seen Cowboy Bebop do it. The adult themes and real world concepts put into the story, masked in well thought out, well placed comedy, make the show stand at the highest tier.
The thing about Cowboy Bebop is that the meaning of the show changes as you get older. If you watched it 5 years ago, give it another watch. Last year? Another watch. Everything in this show is about internilizing what hurts us, and grinding out the man-hours to put some beef in that bell peppers and beef. Its more relivant as you grow up. Because the more you understand about the real world, the more this show hurts you. See ya, Space Cowboys.
I was never sure if these two had feelings for each other, but you can't deny the emotion behind her words, especially when she says, ''Where are you going?'' Like gosh
I mean it's never explicitly stated but to me the Bebop crew became family, Fate, she spends this whole time with the Spike and the others thinking she's out of place running away and trying to find peace with her past. Thanks to the crew she gets knowledge of her past and thinks it will give her some meaning but like she says "There was no place left for me to return to" is very telling for how the story unfolds, Spike is a man that should have died twice already in his pursuit of chasing what the past means to him through Julia, you can see it in how his personality entirely shifts the moment even her name comes up. Spike tells Faye "Forget the past it doesn't matter" because he knows what pain not being able to live in the present causes. When spike talks of his eyes one seeing the present and one seeing the past it's always been interesting to me and reminds me a lot of a Gurren Lagann quote from Kamina that was cut from the English dub and is really hard to find a direct quote of in English but I'll paraphrase how I remember it. "Do you know why god gave us eyes in the front of our heads Simon?, If we had eyes in the back of our heads we'd only see our homes getting further away, God gave us eyes in the front of our heads so we can look forward to the future." I think this quote really plays off the idea of being stuck in the past like the bebop crew and how those who can't forget their past are damned to longing of their homes lost to time. This is why Faye shoots the roof in an attempt to bluff to keep Spike from leaving, because the bebop crew is her future, it's truly something they all should have been doing, looking to the future to make a life for themselves instead of looking to the past as their homes dissipated into nothingness. First Jet with his ex-wife and the pocket watch frozen in time there was no place for him to return to. Just like Faye we when we look to the past we have nowhere to return to, the past is the past because it's gone, that's why it's so tragic when spike says "I'm going to find out if I'm really alive" because we all know why Spike is leaving, he's attempting to go out in a blaze of glory because now that Julia is dead, he too has no place to return to, and that's why Faye knows he's not coming back, because her and Jet decided to let the past go, where as Spike, he lives the way of Bushido and can't let his past go, he must die for his Lady and do what's right. tl;dr I'm a massive fucking nerd and I've watched this show like 15 times
I think after she realized she had to live in the present, she also realized that she was in love with spike but never thought about it cause she was too busy finding out stuff from her past
@@cabnbeeschurgr6440Why does it have to be romantic love? She's never shown any romantic attraction towards Spike. It's closer to how you love a family member or a friend.
Any show that has the balls to have a sad ending i love and any show that actually wraps itself up and not leave 20 clif hangers so it can milk more money out of another season
“Im not going there to die, Im going to find out if I’m really alive.” This one statement is deep on so many levels. Spike ran from his past for so long until he realized in the end he had to confront it to truly move forward and find peace.
He doesn't move forward. He can't without Julia. These are the literal lyrics that play while Spike thinks about Julia and then attacks the syndicate. Everything is already over, You say with closed ears The words only flow Towards a tomorrow without peace There's nothing that won't change Yet even if my life ends This love will not disappear It's something that will live forever Even if dreams are hidden in darkness I got a rainbow Rainbow in your hands...
I can relate to these characters so much I remember spending maybe 7 years after high school going in and out of depression due to my past regrets and disappointing childhood. I was the embodiment of the Doomer meme; avoiding people, gorging on fast food and talking nightwalks. The worst part about being that way is that you become comfortable with it and any attempt to get out of that funk causes discomfort and often leads to self sabotage. The past is potentially a treasure trove of invaluable insight but if you let it it will consume and destroy you. Every now and then I still find myself getting stuck in the past and I just need to remind myself that my future is the only thing that matters and focusing on improving myself is the only thing that will make me feel truly happy. My life is still far from perfect; I'm stuck in a dead end job, have no real friends and am still a good 30-40 lbs overweight but I am making progress towards my goals each and every day and I can only hope that one day I am able to conquer my yesterday and live in a better tomorrow.
@@jadssamparra5034 hey thanks man. I'll be honest though my life really isn't all that bad and I have a lot to be thankful for. Perhaps those years instilled within me a kind of victim complex that I need to overcome.
"The worst part about being that way is that you become comfortable with it" you're not alone, reading this gives a little hope. I'am not the only one.
Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Paranoi Agent, Blue Sub No.06 and so many more. They're all painful, but that sadness is what let's you know you're really alive.
your edit is what made me want to watch this show. And now 2 years later, out of the 200 anime I've watched, this is my favourite ever. Thanks a lot and great work !
What a masterpiece. People always talk about Spike's abstract thoughts and his ways of living but people don't look at the impact of his death that influenced his friends around him. Jet, Faye, Ein, and Ed couldn't even say goodbye.
Idk usually in animes now, they have some message like “believe in yourself”, “keep going” and “don’t give up”. “Carry that weight” is just a lot different, it isn’t like the most motivational but it almost feels really real to the world. Almost like a “own your struggles”. Idk if I’ve ever seen another show like this one in that regard. It’s melancholy and downbeat
Joshua Manjarrez His left eye is a cybernetic implant. That's why one of his eyes is a lighter shade of brown in the closeups. When he's reminiscing on the past throughout the show, it always shows a closeup of his left eye as it's the one he claims stares into the past.
still carrying the weight, this show really gave me a completely diff view on my life it helped me face problems and my past instead of running and abusing myself to escape it, thank you to the creators of this beautiful show and this edit
Cowboy bebop really taught me the values of belonging. How once someone finds where they truly belong what ever the conditions may be you'd still find happiness. All the adventures and memories you make and take along the way wouldn't be as important of you're not having it with the right people, the people you belong with. People subconsciously know when they don't belong whether it be friends, groups, places, home, family. So you feel isolated eventhough you are surrounded by many people, you feel homeless despite having a place to eat, sleep, live. It is when you actually find where you belong, you feel satisfied and truly happy.
Finding this at 2:06am in a very strange part of my struggle with heartbreak/depression and having this song on repeat is helping me think and clear my head…thank you.
Check point: After I broke up with my first and only love when i was 21, I became empty. Now at 36 I have been with many women, traveled to many places, done more things than most ppl my age, i have a good programming job, a life that ppl envy. But that emptiness has never gone away. I pretend to be something more than i am, and ppl around me eat it up, wanting to be like me. If only they knew how i actually feel every day. Im not depressed, i have never contemplated suicide. The void grows every year but i have come to terms with it. Life is all about chasing that light at the end of the tunnel that we will never reach.
i am much younger than you and am not affected by breakups yet i share that same void not suicide not crying just empty i feel many emotions and put on shows of who 'i' am but really i just want to do the most stupid shit to feel the rush and finally live because away from people at night i lay mad at people who hurt me and sad with myself for not being better and it mixes into something that cant be fixed at this point.
I adore how they understood each other and trusted each other on each option to call betrayal .. they knew that each individual was a team member and that they had let go of so much that it wasn't worth holding it against them or making them feel worse ..
When this came on at night. It was a magical break from the horrors of life. That crt glow, resolution just enough to see clearly. The crisp sound of built in speakers. The feeling of power turning it on and off, that wave. This show. The timeless art that it is.
“You’re gonna carry that weight”. Do y’all even now what this means? Our minds are the weight we carry. When you don’t have control of it, it creates a cold world. It’s when People take the world their mind has created for reality that they created suffering for themselves.
DefenestrateYourself I’m sure that was the intention but a lot of the times insights aren’t slipped into things purposely. Like do you think the makers of the matrix knew the message they were subliminaly sending.
I believe its talking about the weight of your past. The entire show is based around these people trying to free themselves from the "frozen time" that the past brought them. Once they dealt with their pasts, they were finally free. There is a lot of symbolism around this in the show.
