This is one I don't agree with (and I am from rural Minnesota.) We always said how many miles to (wherever), not how many minutes. This may be more of an urban / rural difference. Living in a bigger city (Tucson) now, we got used to saying how many minutes to (wherever) because there's very little correlation between distance and time.
Ron Olin That's interesting - My dad always said that living in California everyone would express distance by miles since the traffic was always so unpredictable. But now where we live, in a Min. suburb, we always use minutes for distance :)
That is odd to me. I remember having friends from Cal visit and talk about it being so many minutes from A to Z, and that was strange to my experience, anyway.
Native Texan here living south of you, Iowa. In Texas we measure distance in hours. "How far is it to San Angelo driving from Corpus Christi?" Abiut 5 hours, 3hours if you drive 80. In Texas we legally drive 75mph in most places and 80-90 out in desert country.
It's all relative to the season that you're in. What took me 5 minutes now takes me 10. depends on the weather don't you know. That and the inlaws dont cha know. Takes us half a day to say see ya later.
Anonymooseity Some truth, yes, that's what they're based off of. But the minority of Minnesotans who actually fit these stereotypes does not accurately describe the rest of Minnesotans and it is unfair to claim that it applies to every single Minnesotan.
Anonymooseity Of course I know what he's talking about, because people as close-minded as you always ask me if this is how I talk when they find out I grew up in Minnesota. It is absolutely not because not everyone fits into stereotypes and generalizations formulated by uneducated people.
Jerrica Hanson bruh why u name calling you dont know me. I am born and raised iron range eveleth. More minneotan than you could ever dream seriously dude. i was messin you need to calm the fuck down
I don't know if this is true for all Minnesotans, but I call ATV'S four-wheelers not ATV's. And I go to North Dakota to buy fireworks... Not to start anything up but, you know...
Well if you live in Eastern Minnesota you wouldn't go all west to North Dakota. Same goes for if you live in Western Minnesota, you wouldn't go all East to Wisconsin.
I agree with you on this..I'm from Minneapolis,MN born and raised. South High School my Alma mater...I miss MN bad!!!! I live in another State for now..Hope to go back to MN soon. My family still reside there. Thank you for the video..
As a Minnesotan myself, I gotta say, most of that is accurate. The March thing, I'm not sure, because it's supposed to be officially spring anyway, but it is usually a time where the snow just refuses to go away. Also, I've been saying "soda" for a while. Now we do say "pop". I specifically have been choosing to "soda" as a way to avoid confusion with others.
Maybe down in southern MN, like the Twin Cities. I remember coats and costumes. What's best is if you can combine it. I remember once I put a plastic pumpkin on my head and then put my coat on over it with the hood up, and had to spend the whole evening in a permanent shrug, but it worked pretty well.
I live in northern Minnesota and it’s almost April and this is the first for awhile that there is hardly any snow in the spring. Also most of the stuff was right with only a few things being wrong.
Yes. Being from Maryland I go to visit my sister. People are unbelievably nice. Got offered assistance from 2 shoppers at target when looking for shampoo and a recommendation. . Two ladies gave up their table so our family could sit together. Sounds basic but wow you don't get that warm friendly niceness here like that!
Eh, it was more a response based upon what I'M familiar with, and I hoped you would've understood that. That's one of the big things about stereotypes. While they don't apply to some, it doesn't make them untrue for others.
LOL, I love your jokes & observations; e.g. the concept that "down south" means Iowa (LMAO). The only part I don't understand is why carrying jumper cables with you in the car would be funny? As a Minnesotan who lived out of State a good long while, these came in very handy & I often wondered why others didn't likewise have these (along with winter blanket and other emergency road supplies.) Thanks for the Good Humor! Oh, and I'm from Back West--or so I presume--since where I lived last thought MN was "back East" and gee, we're not even as far east as Illinois, much less the eastern seaboard. ;-)
It's an expression used when something goes wrong, but not incredibly, horribly wrong. The aggravating things of daily life. Your boss griped at you, and then when you went to leave work, your car battery was dead and you had to grab a co-worker to help you start it with jumper cables. Then when you got home, the leftovers you had planned to eat for dinner were spoiled and the cat had thrown up on the rug. Uff da!
Sometimes I will have to take my dogs to the backyard so they can be outside and I just get to the point where I'm to lazy to put shoes on so I will just go out barefoot
I live in Florida and last Summer our car (well my cousin's car that we borrowed, it's a piece of shit lol) got stuck on the beach and wouldn't start. Luckily this guy from Illinois had jumper cables to help us out. Maybe it's a midwest thing?
Shakopee, checking in. The last Warped tour I went to was at Canterbury Park in Shakopee and all of the acts kept saying they were in "Minneapolis." When Less Than Jake played the guy said, "I know we aren't in Minneapolis, I know we are in... Shack-o-pee." And the other guy says, "SHACK-o-pee? Sounds like Jack-off-me!"
I live in Minnesota and we have a cabin (pretty Minnesotan as well) I ask my dad how much longer till were there so if he ever says it in miles which is pretty rare I say "No, time"
Freeways and highways are two different things in my book, and I live, and have always lived, in Minnesota. :P And I know maybe one person who owns a cabin. Also, I eat rice all the time pfft. And I know what mayonnaise is(and always have), though, the workers at McDonalds in Gettysburg, PA didn't know the phrase "mayo" and they got really confused when my friend asked for it. :P I don't think that I've ever used the phrase oofta(or however it's spelled) in my life. Heard it though. Never worn a coat under my costume, but over? yes. Learned about Sven and Oli and Lena jokes from my mom just recently. Though I guess it helps that I have a father from Massachusetts and my mother had lived in Oregon for maybe ten years of her life.
most of these are pretty damn accurate, great video. Born and raised in minnesota, north of twin cities. but you mean to tell me there are people out there who dont measure distance in minutes?
OMG shorts and parka at the same time! When I first moved up here I saw people with shorts and t-shorts when it was 20 degrees out and was like these people are C-R-A-Z-Y until the following year I understood and did the same!
I have lived in MN most of my long life and I say Uff-dah and I am Jewish! LOL I never wear shorts and a parka at the same time though. I love Minnesota, great place to live.
