Hitting gm taught me a ton about myself, brought out the best in me by exposing the worst in me, gave me new confidence, and helped me understand the learning process. There are plenty of other hobbies and skills that will bring out the same in people, but I'm glad I finally found something that works for me. As long as you love the process, keep at it! I never got how someone can be "scared" to play ranked. I used to not play it just because I had no motivation to seriously grind the gamemode and improve so instead I just stayed in QP so I wasnt in an area where I felt like I would hold people back. But to be scared? Like from what I understand QP players and ranked players can be equally toxic and be equally as competitive so is the fear just getting a rank and losing it? Surely if you are that rank you will keep it or maybe get it back if it does go away. Ig there is just no real reason to me why someone should be afraid to queue up ranked if they genuinely want to play the game for improvement

the "that's totally fine" part is something i needed to hear, thanks. it really is easy to fall into the trap of taking it too seriously or placing too much self-worth into it. i don't really think i have the drive to hit gm in overwatch, but i'm gonna look to do it in fighting games. They're the only game that i've consistently never felt like I had to "make the sacrifice for" like you said, since i've always went out of my way to get better, practice, or figure out new ways to look at the game. Maybe Overwatch was that for me back when it first released, but not anymore

honestly this video is exactly what i needed. ive been trying to improve and rank up at overwatch since ow2 came out and for the last 2 months ive been stuck at the same rank and havent been able to figure out why. no matter what i tried to improve on it felt like even if i improved at one thing it felt like something else got worse and this video helped me realize its because ive lost the enjoyment in the process. overwatch, like an instrument or a language, is a skill or an art that isnt an end goal but a process that doesnt end until you want it to and for me the end is losing the enjoyment in the process. it was fun while i enjoyed it and i dont plan on not playing the game anymore but im probably not going to improve past where i am now very much and thats ok. i do appreciate the amazing advice youve given me and thousands of others over the last few months and in my opinion you are the best overwatch coach out there. the main takeaway for me is that you need to enjoy the process of improving at any skill and not focus too much on the end goal bc for most skills of a scale like GM on overwatch cant be thought of as an end goal and if that isnt something you enjoy then it just isnt for you and thats okay.

I got to gm in ow2 in season 3 after having played since season 2 of ow1 (well, didn’t play from seasons 11-18) where I started in low gold, then got to plat around season 20, then got to masters by season 24/25 or so, and then stayed there. I think this video unlocked something in me, I realized something. I didn’t do it because I wanted a shiny icon or to be better than all my friends, I did it because it was fun and beneficial mentally. I can honestly say I don’t regret any of that even if i could’ve been doing something else that would bring more extrinsic rewards.

I think this is what scares me the most: I actually do really enjoy OW. It's quite possibly my favorite thing to do, and ranking up has been a goal for me since about 2018. I'm always watching guides, I play almost daily, mostly comp with the active intention of picking out my mistakes and improving them. I work on my mechanics (Despite a certain recent popular coach telling people they don't matter), I work on my positioning, I work on reading the flow of fights. And yet after five years of grinding, I'm still hardstuck gold. Despite the fact that OW is pretty much all I like to do anymore, and it's what I've put the most time into in recent years, I'm still dogshit. I love the game but I always feel worse about my life after playing it because if this is what five years of actually trying looks like, that doesn't bode well for the rest of my life and any other endeavors I may pursue, none of which I've ever felt the same internal motivation for.

I tried to get to GM in OW1 from 2017 - 2020, I was always around Masters and when i finally got a better connection which made my ping go from 100 -> 40 and made my disconnects and countless SR penalties go away, I hit GM 3 Months later. After that i was satisfied, I didnt really try to push T500 because the game was in it "Dead" phase cause of OW2 development, but I told myself I will grind OW2 to become T500 there. Fast forward they announce 5v5, im very sceptical because my main role (tank) is now completly flipped on its head, but I was willing to give it a chance. I played the beta and I must say, 5v5 is fucking horrible, well atleast for Tanks. It took all the fun out of the role for me, the Teamplay with your other tank, being alone when trying to protect teammates, it just feels ass to play. I cant do an engage and protect my backline at the same time, its too much stuff to do for 1 tank. I lost my motivation to reach a high rank in OW2, but just by playing normally i still reach GM on every role. The ranked system is a big problem for me aswell, i somehow got GM on DPS by going 5 - 7 or something, SR was way better, more transparent and you knew when you would hit T500. I wanted to be motivated to grind, I wanted to be T500 and have awesome matches, because thats why I love the game. These moments of insane teamplay and comms between you and your mates, the insane pop off moments when even a Supp does something crazy. With 5v5 it just doesnt feel the same anymore. I think I still love the game, but man the past few years I was so excited to see OW at the top again and to just come home and grind the shit out of it, but now I only play a few games, dont feel much excitement and i logout. This turned into a rant, oops.

And what i mean with "engage and protect your backline" is, if you for example run in with rein and your backline gets completly obliterated by 2 flanking dps, you have no chance on helping them. In 6v6 i could have an Off Tank helping my backline, but now im alone and if you make a mistake as tank you lose. Add the permanent counter swapping and that if you die as tank the fight is basically lost and it makes, for me atleast, the game 3x less fun. I am not too serious about OW, but I do enjoy FPS game in general and like picking this up when I'm taking a break from Valorant (hardstuck Ascendent on that game). I wish someone with your personality actually existed in Valorant, because I paid for coaching for that game last year. While I did improve, going up 2 rank skills from Platinum to Ascendent, I never thought that my coach was actually the reason I improved. Gaming, esports, competitive is pretty much solely driven on mindset and that alone can take you far in anything in life. Shouts out to you for pretty much being very transparent in your ways of teaching someone, thats what folks need if they truly intend on improving. Honestly had the worst day of ow ive had in ages. Worst one i can right now remember. I main doomfist right now, and my mental health is terrible, these two things don't go well togther. I used to be silver 5 on tank, since i didnt play ranked much on any role and wasnt very good, and then after playing a lot of doom, i tried to play almost only doomfist in ranked for like 2 weeks since i like tankfist. I reached masters 5 without deranking once. I'm not crazy gud, but sometimes i am, and in non pop off moments, im ok. Maybe its a waste of time putting this much detail into this but fuck it ive made this my main game for a largeeee amount of the past 6 years. Playing doomfist with how many counters and bugs there are, plus doomfist being prolly one of the hardest and weakest heroes, its miserable right now. Unless im popping off a ton, its not enjoyable, its just not. I honestly believe if i commited myself to this game for longer and even more signifcantly, i could get better, maybe into high master or above, but i dont think its worth it mentally. I need to take a break from ow. Unless the balance team gains a few more braincells (hopefully getting into positive number of brain cells), this game is not fun as a tank player. Oh yeaaa forgot to mention, zen, discord orb, no. I know discord orb is bouta be nerfed, still, cass nade and mei primary, it literally goes against the dev teams own/old ow2 philosphy of less cc. As doom this shi is miserable. I coulda had a 4k punch off the map maybe, nope, cass nade said u have to bait out my cooldown and then make something work in that time frame before i get it backoff cooldown, oh wait did u forget sleep dart, or sombra hack. Yes u can out play it, yes its partially a skill issue, but also yes the balancing is extremely terrible for doom. You have to be insanely perfect with how u play to deal with counters. Add in a bit of terrible mental health, some solo emps, teammates saying switch even tho i am good at doom and got to this rank as doom, and can in fact win against countersfrequently.. its miserable. For the few people who may read this, sorry for the rant/vent. Sometimes im told to switch and the match isnt even being lost by that much or for that long. If ur not perfect, and popping off, doom is miserable. In general this community, is constantly pointing fingers every match instead of looking at themself because in the end, we all mess up, have bad games, and wanna win. No ones perfect, getting mad at teammates tilts u and them in my opinion. I was gonna say i love this game, but when it comes down to it i love what this game could be and what it is at its best. I should honestly work on will power to make myself do school work, to go to the gym, and do more shi thats not online. I've been struggling with mental health for years now, and maybe taking a break from overwatch would help. I wish I could spend more time to get better, while enjoying the game, but i cant do both. Maybe i could play it casually, but maybe thats for the future. Ngl as a side note, this situation with ow reminds me of another part of my life i feel similar ish things about, and i hate that it makes me feel like the next thing that may happen in my life is taking a huge break from that part. This is straight up venting now sorry. However, that part of my life, in my opinion the struggles are worth it, and since they are in my control and not stupid blizzard, im gonna keep going, but, im gonna try focus more on just me. If you read all of this hi hello and hope you have a great whatever time it is for you now. Random last thought- I want to hit GM in taking care of myself, and making the right choices, instead of with playing a game that even hitting GM in, wont really matter at all. I'm already decent, ive already improved, and i already know this game doesnt deserve my time. I've already been playing some other single player games lately, tbh i think games in general i dont play for fun, i play to win and complete, and that is something i want to change. One day i may return. Hopefully this time, for fun, with a pc that isnt kinda bad, maybe ill stream, maybe i wont.

Thanks Spilo. Never really thought about it. It's just a dream of sorts that I'd like to hit but I don't expect myself to get there. I hadn't been enjoying OW this past year but this season I've been playing much more Ranked (I have 1000's of hours into QP but not even 100 in ranked lol) and I can say that while it's still a struggle these past few days have been somewhat fun. I was gold tank and support in OW1 but since OW2 I couldn't get past Silver 3. Today I was doing what I did yesterday and just Flex Qued. Got tank and went from Silver 2 to 90% of the way to Gold 5. Lost a match but when winning I've been getting 50-70% increase while only losing maybe 24% at most. I'm confident that I can make it but the thing is I'm actually having some moderate fun where even the one game I lost I didn't tilt. That's a major buff to how it's been until now. I feel like I am enjoying it right now. Just never realized that I'm doing better by not caring as much and just going with the flow. thank you.

This was pretty much how I climbed in ow and hit top500 for the first time. It was the more I matured mentally then mechanically is when I started to climb. Due to my adhd I can be very self critical this can be double edged sword as I will want to be and play perfect or do something right the first time. This can either make me play passively or play out of my damn mind. But once I have my mind set on something I will get it. I think the most valuable thing in order for me to climb was mental and indifference to external factors like teams and more of a introspective look on how I could have played better even if it wouldn’t have won me the the game.

my goal for the longest time has been hitting masters on tank in ow1. and after an eternity being hardstuck in diamond, i finally hit masters multiple times within the last couple of seasons. now in ow2, i main support. and while i hit masters relatively easily 2 seasons in a row already, my goal hasnt changed: after hitting masters, i dont really want to put in more time and effort to hit gm. i enjoy overwatch, sometimes more and sometimes less so. but masters really is that end goal for me. i was so happy when i hit it both on tank and support, but i immediately knew that thats where my improvement shall end. i dont feel insecure about not improving past masters. i am content with that rating.

Im a current GM, i play the game probably 6 hours a day, maybe 8-12 hours on weekends. Ive stopped playing comp, and play an insane amount of QP now. I enjoy memeing on players, and i enjoy the lack of toxicity in QP. I also enjoy playing with my friends, but when we play together we like to play ranked. The problem? Were all GM players, so we cant play with eachother. So we routinely make new accounts, and essentially uber smurf till we hit masters 1, usually 2-3 hours. We then make new accounts and do it again. We enjoy climbing, but eventually you hit the top of the ladder and all you can do is run it again. I would have motivation to grind top 100 or top 10 or something if i could play with my friends. I guess for me, i lost motivation upon hitting GM, because the mechanics of GM made it so i cant cooperate with my friends. I like to think that our smurf accounts are like a protest against GM stacking rules. I am excited for the 5v5 gamemode coming out next season. Until then, i guess im contributing to the smurfing issue. We could play qp, but theres no progression for us.

I completely agree that players "learning" don't actually learn simply because they're not actually working on the things they should work on. They just play the way they're used to. The reason for that is that there are so many areas to work on (positioning, ability use, target priority, timing, mechanics, synergies, compositions etc.) and it's hard to improve in so many areas at the same time. I'm taking a different approach in my learning tho. I'm just focusing on positioning. Positioning, positioning, positioning. There's nothing else in this game for me right now than positioning. I'm going to force positioning down my throat so hard that I'll do perfect positioning even with blindfolds on while playing jazz piano with my feet. Because when I'm able to do that, only then I'll be able to start learning another area without letting my positioning go back to rust.

I was a top 500 tank player when I was in college (so season 3-7,8 of OW1) and it mattered so much to me. But afterwards, I just stopped playing the game for 6 years. I recently came back in because I noticed they made so many good changes, but this time around only playing with friends casually in quickplay. I realized how vain and slightly pointless my commitment to being good at OW was, but one thing I got from it was a confidence that if I put my heart to something, I can be the best at it. This certainly translate to work for me nowadays. I still love watching pro play and understanding set ups though. That shit doesn't get old.

I've been playing OW since 2017. Similar to you, I only played quick play for almost an entire year. Then I convinced some of my friends to play the game (they got hooked just like me)... I was stuck in Gold for all ranks for a long time... I watched some RU-vid coaching videos and made it to Plat... Then I went hard on the grind to get better at support eventually making it all the way to masters (roughly 3700, with the same group of friends)... Then my friends wanted a break. The grind at that rank became more toxic and frustrating than any of us had anticipated and we started playing much less--about once or twice a week (much shorter sessions, too). I still attempted to grind to GM on my own but I soon realized the reason I enjoyed the game so much was because it was a fun and unique way to game competitively WITH my FRIENDS. We still play frequently (although still much shorter sessions compared to our rank grinding days). We all hover around high diamond to low masters and that's fine with us. We genuinely realized that what really made the game so enjoyable, grindable, replayable was F R I E N D S H I P! (no joke). We are still motivated (at times) to play like we used to -- tryharding -- but we are comfortable not climbing to higher ranks. All around it has made the game so much more fun in the long term.

During covid when I was laid off for 6-7 months, I took the time to really grind the game and get better. Gave me something to focus on while being home (working in the food industry was tough during this time). I was hovering from 3400-3600 on tank, but with a lot of self review and mechanics training i was able to reach around 4.2(even though it was on rein haha). I loved the grind but once i started getting owl pros in my games, you just see how much better they are, and it’s really demotivating tbh. It’s fun playing in top 500 elo but sometimes it’s really hard to do the right things all the time, especially when your favorite characters are out of meta. In ow2 ive hit gm 3 with rein and sigma and when games are good, they are really fun, but when toxicity happens it really turns me off the game. Ive had fun but I can’t really see me grinding for that anymore, but I can say it was fun!! Especially since this was the first game ive it “GM” on and played seriously competitively. Great video man. You know it’s thought provoking when everyone is sharing their story’s.

Honestly, my goal isn't getting GM. My goal is to actually have a structure to my training, if you will. I have some of the abstracts like the 3 aspects to a good warmup routine (and that aim training isn't warmup but training itself), how many hours the brain can focus (5 hours), as well as an understanding on the importance of breaks, self-VoD Reviews, as well as things like the importance of good food and sleep. Heck, even a slight routine to get out of competitive anxiety by queueing Open Queue first. What I really want is something that puts all of this together in a 5-6 hour block (depending on whether warmup takes up the 5 hour slot of focus or not). To me, lacking this feels like I don't even have the process, and watching your vids haven't really helped as even the warmup video didn't give any examples of what concrete warmup exercises to do. I would love seeing a video that combines these nuggets into a solid structure, especially for an autist like me who does need that highly structured routine.
@zombow
@zombow Год назад
At the end of the day aim training IS warmup as there's so much more to a match. Grinding competitive where you get your competitive anxiety is what will get rid of it. Vod reviews are nice but actually playing is a million times better, a bad habit people do is doing Vods/Aim training to avoid actually playing the game but feeling like they're improving, which isn't exactly untrue but it's such a small amount and ingame you're not actually going anywhere with that time. This is just some stuff I've learned I've been top 500 OW1 and OW2

@@zombow I 100% agree. @BlazeLycan I would advise against 'training' in a way that reflects some of the things that @zombow has said. Please excuse me if I don't understand the crux of your comment but I see it like this: The reason you train is to increase your rank. To improve your rank, you need to play ranked. If you're training, you're not playing. Training is a means to an end and not the end itself. If you are to train, it is not to be the majority of your time. That should be spent playing the game itself -- that in and of itself is the training. Ranked anxiety is not going to be fixed through vod reviews. Most ranked anxiety comes from feeling insecure about your rank and the feeling that you don't deserve it: well there's only one way to find out... by playing the game. Feel free to devise a routine that fits the things you mentioned in, but playing the game should be the priority within that.
@BlazeLycan
@BlazeLycan Год назад
@@zombow It was mentioned in Spilo's video on warmup that Aim Training is not Warmup. I don't currently recall whether or not that was in the video itself, or in the description or pinned comment. In this case, I take the coach's word for it. I do appreciate the concern regarding vod/training instead of playing, however from what I have gathered from Spilo's content, warmup should be about 10-30 minutes, VoDs about 20, and one of Spilo's vids was about that the brain can focus for about 5 hours max. Whether or not that includes the 30-50 minutes warmup+vod or not is a different story but if it it does, that would still be over 4 hours of game. And the thing about playing is that I do not feel that I learn from playing at this point. I'm somewhere around M5-M3 for years now. If I just improved from playing then it has only been good enough to keep me in line with the improvement at the same rate of the rest of the community, keeping me stagnant. Part of that is that some degree of critical thinking does go to autopilot when I play which is normal, and the goal should be to improve that auto pilot so that it becomes a well advanced auto pilot, but at this point I feel like I do not gain enough new experience and just need to better knowledge and training to sharpen the edges.
@BlazeLycan
@BlazeLycan Год назад
@@benz. your analogy is flawed. "The reason you train is to increase your rank. To improve your rank, you need to play ranked. If you're training, you're not playing. Training is a means to an end and not the end itself. " If true in spirit; Ukraine would be silly for having parts of their combat forces in Poland training with their new equipment, Gym buffs should cancel their memberships and become employees of moving or shipping companies, and competitive teams need not scrim and just dive head first into tournament play regardless of if they are amateurs grouped together 2 days ago or in OWL. The flaws come down to your 2nd and 3rd premises which are faulty. The 2nd premise don't show the entire picture. Yes, you have to play ranked to rank up, but the reason why that does not demonstrate the entire story is because it is one's own skill level relative to everyone else that determines your rank. That skill can be improved through other means than just playing ranked. There are anecdotes of people who completely forego ranked play in order improve in a scrim team, only for them to see rank ups when they do return to Ranked because they improved beyond their opponents. Likes wise are there examples of people who had 1 fixable mistake hinder the rest of their potential from shining through, only to climb massively once their own obstacle was removed. Improvement can be done via training. The 3rd premise is faulty because that entirely depends on what kind of training it is. Aim Labs is not going to see play a game or Ranked, true, but if you are training DPS Moira or Zen only for 2 weeks, then that is training which also sees play, even if that costs you a few games. When I say training, it is more so the latter that I mean. The reason I wish to establish a training routine with my play is because that adds more structure and a sense of purpose for me as an Autist and helps use all avenues to improve myself and eliminate inconsistencies which in turn can help me climb. That is why just establishing and maintaining such a routine is my goal, especially as that is completely lacking for me atm.

@@BlazeLycan Feel free to deconstruct my response but I am not here to debate you and I don't consider it a bloody debate LOL. To be totally honest with you, I haven't read much beyond the first paragraph and your final paragraph. I offered that advice as I believe you're overcomplicating the approach to improvement. The reason I say that is because it seems way too over the top. I guess to give some credibility as to the things I say, I've been GM pretty much since I began playing the game in Season 3 OW1 and I have been consistently T500 since then and through to now. How I did that and continue to do that is simple: playing the damn game. The only time I ever VOD reviewed was when I was hard stuck 4350 and wanting to hit 4400+. I'll repeat my advice in more general terms. To improve at the game, the best way is to play the game. All things outside of that are auxiliary. That does not mean they're not helpful. Simple enough. I guess I am perplexed about the idea of a 'training routine'. What do you plan to train? Sitting and doing aim drills for hours on end? Looking at your VODs for hours on end? If you need a structure, one that encapsulates 'training' is easy to devise. 1. Spend 15 minutes to 1 hour doing aim drills (aim labs, in game code , treating this as training your aim or warm up, doesn't matter. 2. Jumping into a quick play game or two to apply the aim training and to further warm up. 3. Play comp. Try to get at least 2 games in. The more the merrier. Remember to take breaks and do aim routines if it feels necessary throughout. 4. Finish comp. Wind down. 5. VOD review. Make sure this is purposeful and not just you simply watching it back and not actually reflecting. All that can be done within a 5 hour 'focus period'. If you want or care for my advice feel free to respond. If you wish to correct anything I've said with regard to my interpretation of what you said, feel free to do so. All of that is subject to the caveats found at the start of this response.

I used to be such a little toxic sht, i reached masters as dps, almost hit gm a few times and i was hating on the balance team, other players, heros and tons of stuff that didnt actually matter, and i recently realised that the higher you go in overwatch and really any live service competitive game, you are less happy as everything sucks more, youre more resticted and this causes you to lash out at stuff in the game that maybe is fun but isnt exactly good for a competitive game and i think overwatch is at its best when youre just picking what you like in lower ranks. So at this point i dont care if something is actually broken like suzu, all i want is for the annoying stuff that makes my gold friends put the hame down to be removed, and i think thats where the dev teams focus should be, just making most players happy as i legitimately dont think you can make masters and up happy, coming from someone who has been ib that mind set, we will never be happy as long as the game plays like overwatch. But i definitely agree that reaching those ranks isnt for everyone, its not as fun as people think, especially in overwatch where each rank can feel like an entirely new game with how different the meta and heros are from each other based on the rank

The key is enjoying the game. If you enjoy it, you naturally climb. It puts you in that flow state. I don't enjoy the game anymore. It's a flawed game. I played every hero since the release ow1 and bored. I was enjoying Brig in season 3 a lot. She was one of my least played hero so it was like a fresh discovery to me. Now they changed her in season 4 and i hate how she plays now. New hero LW isn't even functioning. The game is just not good to be honest. It needs a rework in all aspects and the devs aren't competent enough to do anything. It's a casual game that tries to sell skins at it's core. Don't take the game seriously really. I have a lot less playtime in season 4 now. Barely finished the battlepass. It's sad my love for the game died so quick. Devs and the direction of the game is just not good. I wanted to hit t500 in s4 but couldn't force myself. The game is unbearable most of the time. I hit GM2 that's enough. I'm hopping to Diablo 4. I will check out the cinematic and story mode cutscenes if they really release it in s6. Love the universe but the game is a dogwater. If you have some self respect just uninstall the game. I understand casuals and content creators sticking with it though. Respect to you guys. For online pvp itch, i will go back to fighting games. I enjoyed Mortal Kombat 11 a lot. Now waiting for MK1. Street Fighter 6 is also great. People should start giving attention to fighting games. They are great and very similar to OW in many ways. Also characters in these games as good as OW and have much better skin/customization systems if you are into that type of stuff.

I’m 50/50 with Overwatch. I love hybrid/escort but hate koth and push. I love the gameplay overall but I can’t stand this counter hero aspect of the game. I think the game is a lot more fun when the heroes are more one trickable and yes, you can for sure. However some heroes are more counter able then others or just are so bad right now you can’t play them into certain things and I don’t think you can ever fix these problems completely, but that’s where I stand. Even bigger reason stopping me from ranking is being punished by not being able to play with my friends. If I rank up I get out of their range even if I played all my games with them, this still happens which I don’t understand but yeah can’t play together then. Even if we played together and get to the higher ranks together eventually we can only duo so someone is left out or the group is split 50/50. That’s not fun. So at the end of the day, we are encouraged to not rank up more than rank up. Quick play just doesn’t have the same feel as comp for many reasons, but it also ruins the two modes I said I love because you only play attack or defense. You don’t get to switch sides and try to out do the other. Anyways longer comment then I intended as always

People that can apply that is one of the biggest factors of success at anything. I work a very physical job and do not want to every day, but i do because i have the discipline to get up every day and do it. Ideally you want to be enjoying something most of the time. But ifbyou cant get through the periods where you dont, than you need more discipline.

The biggest problem with ranking up is frustration. Like you say, you need some form of motivation to improve. And the biggest motivation killer is frustration. Tho you think it doesnt kill the motivation because you madly think: 'i need to try another game again and not lose this time!' It seems like this thinking is based on motivation but it is not. Those emotions are purely based on your frustration, and the motivation is far gone. The problem is it is almost impossible to not get frustrated when you try to rank up in bog numbers. Thats my point of view.

This game hidden mmr mechanism is purely unfair. It smells like it really wants you to stay at 50% winrate, no matter what you do. It's obvious that given that situation, GM is locked on. I play DPS, I out dps both my teammate and enemies most of the time, I do more kills and die less, I'd honestly say I over perform more than 50% of the time, even more than 75% of the time, yet there are those unwinnable games popping up, games where your tank is diffed, games where my second DPS is doing 2 times less than what I do. It's like the game has decided that I must stay where I am, and I'm not in power to change that. It's the hidden mmr decision, the matchmaker decision, and there is nothing to do about it. I just wish I could play with equally skilled people but the game prevents that, I know I could improve and I make mistakes, but this whole hidden mmr thing is designed in such a way that it blocks you, because when you are "skilled" and want to improve with equally skilled teammates, you don't get that, you get "punished" because the system puts you with lower ranked people that you must carry to win, and it often happens to be impossible. I won today a game as hanzo/soldier, I did 30K damage (my second dps was 16K, enemy DPS were 19K and 18K) but even then, this massive difference didn't count that much, it was close as hell, check it out, tell me how this game is balanced from my point of view ? www.twitch.tv/videos/1831790351?t=0h54m18s

I guess I was lucky. When I first start playing Overwatch 2 in season 2, I immediately hit Master and next season I hit GM and now GM, peaked top 300 ish. Didn't do anything like vod review or watch videos or stream just playing alone.

I’ve literally gone 5-0 and ranked down twice now. Your vid talking about how it weights it with how well your team SHOULD have won those games makes sense, but is deflating nevertheless. I’m fine with never hitting GM, I just want to feel like I’m progressing. I know I’m getting better, but ranking down when you slay?? I do love what you say about being realistic. I love this game as a hobby and enjoy the journey of improving and IGL’ing my lil aspiring casual buds. We love watching this kinda content and just being part of a ranked system, just needs to feel more fair to have a lil reinforcement and all of us are experiencing ranking down too often when we go positive on wins.

as someone who has hit gm multiple times on multiple accounts, just know that you have winstreaks and lose streaks extremely often. Currently, I am gm1/t500; know that it takes time to really climb. Doing it in one season is great, but improvement usually shows it's fruits after multiple competitive seasons have passed. Good luck, stay devoted :)

The game is probably trying to balance you to where you actually belong. You could be slaying in bronze mmr lobbies as a gold player, for instance. Simply stating that you’re 5-0 with no other info doesn’t really help get to the root of the issue. The ranking systems seems to work pretty well at the moment when you understand it.

@@Fucklifedeadshit Sry I didn’t give much more context. I was gold 1 and went down to Gold 3 after 5-0. I’m pretty sure on a Spilo vid he talks about how even diamond or maybe GM’s have experienced the same. So I’m not trying to avoid responsibility or be naive as a new-ish player to ranked grind, but also not ignore flaws in a system with overworked devs writing spaghetti code and systems with holes in them. I’m pretty sure the devs even said recently that they tried to fix this issue in a patch. Also every major title incorporating EOMM aspects, don’t even have the energy to open up that can of worms. All in all, experiencing a rank down when you went positive, without the game giving a player a digestible explanation is poor UX. I appreciate the encouragement, truly, but one shouldn’t be reliant on finding the encouragement to keep playing from the self help side of yt - the game should just tell you, “your stats or performance reflect x ranking” even though the only metric they give us now says different. Some level of candid/transparency would be 💆🏻‍♂️

@@CalAndAly The system essentially works the same as it did in overwatch 1, you just don’t see the individual SR gains and losses. If you won 5 and deranked, you were already in a rank higher than you should have been. You could lose 15 and then go 5-0 and still be in an SR deficit, leading you to drop down. Focus less on your rank and more on your gameplay. EOMM isn’t keeping you gold, your fundamentals likely are, so focus on improving those and your rank will go up.

I feel like the most important things to have for climbing in general is 1 the appreciation of the subject, 2 the willingness to make mistakes, forgive yourself and learn, 3 mental flexibility and toughness, and 4 community, even if it's just 1 other person you can connect with, or maybe someone that brings you inspiration. Take Spilo for example :)

It's definitely a personal experience but for me personally, I was platinum in OW1 and then took a break from early 2020 to s2 of ow2 and I was able to hit gm in s3 at the end and at least for me personally, it was quite easy as I only got 1 coaching session and climbed from my "hardstuck" of masters to GM so that affected me negatively as I felt I didn't deserve GM even if I had the rank and even if I would have climbed to GM1 I wouldn't have felt I deserved it since I never climbed out of 3000sr in OW1.

kinda like me being stagnant at low to mid masters in overwatch 1 and now being consistently gm droping into high masters at the end of each season... I would like to think that I have improved, but with inflation it feels like I didn't.

You definitely can. It's basically what I have done since I started playing in OW1 season 3 and I hit GM the season after. For some, practice is aim routines and vod reviews. I just hit ranked. It's inefficient and enforces bad habits, but you can make it to GM. As long as you have any semblance of self-reflection, you can do it.

Ngl I rather enjoy the game as it is gameplay wise then focusing myself on the highest rank, the only thing that hurts now is seeing that u're stuck the same rank over and over (Diamond 1 for me) even after getting 5 wins and few (or even 0) loss

I dont care about GM. I just want to hit masters and be done with it. Why Masters? Because when I ws silver, I had a Master crry me to Plat, and he usually said if I kept playing the way I am, I could have make it to diamond by myself. And I was about to try that, but I had quit Ow for personal reasons outside the game. Ow2 comes out, 5v5 didnt interest me... but friends convinced me to try Ow again. Now Im gold 5 with 40 wins out of 82 games. I try my best but I guess its where I belong. I must improve to be back when I was in Ow1.
