You're Not A REAL Farmer If You Don't Do This!
Its time to come clean. We've only been pretending to be farmers.......until today. Today we are doing what all REAL farmers do. Put in a garden.
We are using a "no till" approach to gardening. No till gardening is a method of gardening that reduces weeds and increases yields without using conventional fertilizers.
And yes, we do watch Pete at “Just A Few Acres Farm”

Sandra, I planted 93 tomato plants + volunteers. You can never have too many tomatoes. I understand.

Suggestion for next year: however much corn you plant, plant it in a square shape instead of just two rows. Even just 4 half rows instead of two full rows is better. Being wind pollinated it'll yield better results that way. Love the garden content too.

I am trying the planting method you describe. If the crows and red wing blackbirds don't pick out my corn seeds, I should have corn this year.

I think the move is hose that cardboard down, give it a good soak before laying on the compost

You can freeze tomatoes. I just wash and core them, put them in bags and freeze. As you thaw them just a little the skin slips of, and the tomatoes are great for soups and other cooked tomato recipes. If I get in a hurry and don't have time to can, I freeze since it is quick. I live in Ruskin, Florida so there are many tomatoes shipped from this town.

Yeah it's not cows, chickens, and pigs but what it is, is something new to the channel. Like when you guys showed the egg hatching video. In my book there's nothing wrong with a little variety to spice it up from time to time.

Looks good! You may need to cut a 2” or so wide strip area out of the cardboard where you are planting the corn so it can root deep enough into the ground so it doesn’t get blown over with wind. Also corn is very heavy feeder & will use up nutrients in the native soil & the compost pretty quickly. Will most likely need to fertilize it often for good stalk growth & ear production. I use my old metal stock tanks for raised beds if they leak & can’t be fixed any more, have retired 5 to the garden so far over the years & they work well as hugel lasagna beds.

I have 9 Vegega raised beds still in their shipping boxes! I’m on the carnivore diet now so when I get around to setting them up I will just grow things for the pigs and chickens and some herbs for me. Everything I’m doing is for food security so I can shift gears if need be. That looks real nice and I think I heard the cicadas a couple of times. They are pretty much finished over here in Georgia, it appears.

Corn would be better in a block not a row. It is wind pollinated and you will get more ears of corn off them. In a couple of long rows they are less likely to pollinate.

That is a really nice looking garden, Chuck. The slabs really set it off. I should think it's a real help to have a hard edge to weed-whack against. How do you manage weeds in compost garden - just keep after it so it doesn't get ahead of you? I'd be afraid that I'd miss a weeding session or two and the whole thing would get over-run. My garden is about 1/4 acre, and I had to use the black woven weed fabric to try to control the weeds. Some weeds still manage to get through (around the holes that I burn for putting in the plants, and along the staples that I drive in to keep the fabric in place), but it makes it a little bit easier for me to manage (to be honest, it's my wife that takes care of the weeding tasks!). Take care and God Bless.

Chuck I don't believe corn will work in that system. That loose compost will not be firm enough to hold the stalks up. First bit of wind will blow it over on you. I like the idea for everything else though.. BTW thanks for not telling everyone where the good compost is here in Hickory. A mans gotta keep that kinda info secret. 😁

Might be slugs, snails & or cut worms. I use Sluggo, it’s Iron phosphate & isnt toxic to the garden or birds or domestic animals. Sprinkle on the top of the soil & soon the slugs & snails are gone. You may need to treat the soil for cut worms. I’ve had some success with cutting toilet paper rolls in half, into 2 rolls & put over / around the seedlings & into the soil a bit to anchor the 1/2 roller. Can also use paper towel rolls, just cut 1 into 4 smaller rolls. I use these with beans, cukes, sunflowers, peas & squash seedlings.
