Octopuses and cuttlefish are masters of underwater camouflage, blending in seamlessly against a rock or coral. But squid have to hide in the open ocean, mimicking the subtle interplay of light, water, and waves. How do they do it? (And it is NOT OCTOPI)

DEEP LOOK is a ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small.
* NEW VIDEOS EVERY OTHER TUESDAY! *
--- How do squid change color?
For an animal with such a humble name, market squid have a spectacularly hypnotic appearance. Streaks and waves of color flicker and radiate across their skin. Other creatures may posses the ability to change color, but squid and their relatives are without equal when it comes to controlling their appearance and new research may illuminate how they do it.
To control the color of their skin, cephalopods use tiny organs in their skin called chromatophores. Each tiny chromatophore is basically a sac filled with pigment. Minute muscles tug on the sac, spreading it wide and exposing the colored pigment to any light hitting the skin. When the muscles relax, the colored areas shrink back into tiny spots.
--- Why do squid change color?
Octopuses, cuttlefish and squid belong to a class of animals referred to as cephalopods. These animals, widely regarded as the most intelligent of the invertebrates, use their color change abilities for both camouflage and communication. Their ability to hide is critical to their survival since, with the exception of the nautiluses, these squishy and often delicious animals live without the protection of protective external shells.
But squid often live in the open ocean. How do you blend in when there's nothing -- except water -- to blend into? They do it by changing the way light bounces off their their skin -- actually adjust how iridescent their skin is using light reflecting cells called iridophores. They can mimic the way sunlight filters down from the surface. Hide in plain sight.
Iridophores make structural color, which means they reflect certain wavelengths of light because of their shape. Most familiar instances of structural color in nature (peacock feathers, mother of pearl) are constant-they may shimmer when you change your viewing angle, but they don't shift from pink to blue.

Who do you think gives these scientists the money to pay their salaries to do something so unprofitable like cutting squid open "just to see." All research is funded as some sort of investment, whether its medical or defense related. Very few things are done out of kindness or in search of knowledge without some sort of return on investment. You can 100 percent guarantee that some DARPA scientist is sitting around reading the reports and trying to connect the dots on the primary research that determines its viability for military camouflage technology.
@Kindred1a1
@Kindred1a1 6 лет назад
@OSKSNAKE As a scientist, I can tell you that you are incorrect. A country's government has a budget for scientific research. This amount of money is divided to various governmental bodies that deal with an aspect of scientific research. For example in Canada, 2 of the big ones are NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council) and CIHR (Canadian Institutes of Health Research). Scientists write grant proposals to apply to grants by explaining how the funds will be used and what for. If you are doing research in something that can benefit humans (like it can lead to some kind of therapy), then you apply for CIHR. If it is a project that looks at how some particular mechanism works, then you apply for NSERC (just knowledge that perhaps in the future someone will use to write CIHR grant for). Some private companies can invest into research (like the military for example) as well but not all do. I'm working on a project that is funded by a NSERC grant, which tries to identify how the brain changes in old age (im vulgarizing it but anyway). I'm not looking for a therapy or anything. Some of the most amazing research that has given us answers to how human brains work came from studies that had no relation to humans whatsoever and were simply looking to understand how squids, sea slugs & other animals "worked"

This video made me go look up the etymology of "Octopuses". TIL: The original pluralization was Octopodes, then was incorrectly changed to Octopi because of the belief the word was Latin in origin, when it actually is Greek, and now Octopuses has become so widely used in texts it is the accepted replacement for Octopodes!
@joshcassidy7270

@scottycatman

+Roulette Octopuses if you're talking about multiple species of octopus, octopi if you're referring to multiple of the same species. This isn't set in stone, but it's the most accepted.

Ocotopi assumes that octopus is a Latin word. The problem is, it's not, it's a Greek word. Octopodes would be the "correct" pluralization. However, that doesn't work well in English, so the correct English plural is octopuses. Octopi is generally accepted, but it's definitely not right.

I saw a video about how octopuses have brain cells distributed throughout their bodies, a trait that allows them to solve problems more easily. Maybe this is similar, where the brain cells in the cut off part eventually learned how to camouflage without the command of the central brain. Or the synapse regenerated, though I'm not sure if they can. Maybe shine lights on it and see if the reaction time or resulting change is different between the two sides.

Your photomicrography is fantastic! I operated one of the first high speed video cameras ever...the Kodak Spin Physics system. I used a laser to light the subject; I perfected the manufacture of 14" rigid Winchester disks for Dysan (late '80s) I could not shoot animals or anything else that the necessary lighting power would destroy. The sensors are SO MUCH BETTER now...mine was monochrome. (sigh) I met Doc Edgerton when I was a kid. My uncle worked with him at Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey. He gave my life direction. I'll watch your discoveries with great interest.

Amazing video! May I ask why these videos aren't uploaded in 60 frames per second, though? It's sort of a shame that such high quality footage is limited to 30 despite RU-vid's recent integration of 60 fps uploads.

+F255123 Hi, I shoot Deep Look at 30P so I don't think uploading at 60 would be possible. Maybe in the future if we upgrade our 4k camera. Thanks for your comment.
