And take action, regardless of how I feel. This usually happens when I get so frustrated by my own inertia that I just have to do something.

This video hit me like a brick. I'm in a constant cycle of not wanting to do what my parents want me to do in fear of being old I'm wrong, finally deciding to do something well for the first time, and getting shut back down again. If I'm correct, I remember failing to do basic tasks when I was a toddler growing up, and getting my grandmother to go apeshit at me. From my point of view, she hated me. From learning to write, to eating a banana, the list goes on. It was as if every mistake I made was a personal statement of disrespect towards their authority. And yes, I think that fear carried over to everything that I am today, the reason why I strive to be better and better eveyday, the reason why I love completing goals, the reason why I love bragging, it's as if I'm trying to prove to myself that I'm worthy. Like I'm trying to get that "Good job, you did well." I never got from my grandma in my very early life. Hearing a "Good job" would tell me that I'm doing well, and there's no reason to be afraid of failure. If anything, I'd say to forgive myself for all the mistakes I've made in my life, tell myself "I know you don't want to do it, but remember, you have to. And even though you are afraid, just remember, no one's here to scream at you, or make you feel like you're unworthy of love. Just do it, focus on the task, and you'll manage no matter what." P.S.: Yes, my parents and grandparents love me very much. Yes, I did get a "good job" A LOT during my childhood. Yes, my parents are great parents. These are scars created with negative experiences during time.

I'm not lazy, bored or unmotivated... I'm just tired of trying. Fear consumed my life and staying in my bubble and not doing anything helps me manage that fear. Getting out of that bubble makes everything come back. This summer, I was finally happy. Then, school started and I'm miserable again. I still had anxiety, of course but it was more mild. It is now unbearable. I don't feel like doing anything, I feel mentally exhausted even though I barely did anything. I just want to lay in bed, and never get out. But I have places to go and activities to do, and they do not make anything better, they just make things worse and worse.

you want to stay in bed all day because everything else just makes you suffer, but that's the thing, you are the one causing your own suffering by being afraid. you have anxiety when you are in school because you have to interact with people? then you probably don't find enjoyment in it simply because you are afraid of being judged, because you view yourself as inferior to others and thus incapable of enjoying simply talking to someone. the answer to this is that fear is irrational, it stems to protect us from dying. back in the day being rejected by people meant being alone in the wilderness, so those who survived evolved to avoid those situations by creating loneliness and the fear of being rejected. but now that fear is not real, you are not going to die if you are rejected socially. the only way to stop being afraid, to stop all the suffering, is simply to realise that fear is irrational and that the world has changed, to understand how truly lucky you are to be living in a safe country at a time of prosperity, and that you have no real reason to worry despite how much your mind likes to push your fears onto yourself. as the video says, you can apply that to any that you find displeasing, you just need to discover what is it that you are fearing.
@sibilansnel
@sibilansnel 2 года назад
@@javimartinez9300 Hey, I actually know all this, and I did know all this before starting therapy. I know it's completely irrational and yet it's still here. I also know that other people are too worried about how they themselves appear to others to notice me. Nobody really pays attention to others enough to judge them. But it's still here. That's what is so frustrating about it. Before school I'll be like "hey, they won't care so you should just relax" and then in the moment I'm completely frozen and anxious.

@ItsAsparageese
@ItsAsparageese 4 года назад
@@playerdude2 How so? I'm a grammar and mechanics pedant and have professionally edited and I can't figure out what's wrong with it. It's obviously informal and intentionally evokes spoken tone, with the apostrophe on "lovin'", but I don't think saying "I am loving [subject]" instead of "I love [subject]" is necessarily incorrect. Perhaps it's technically just barely incorrect since the verb can be used more simply for essentially the same meaning, but I would argue that it's not incorrect since it's structurally sound, the elements all have correct relationships, and there are tons of ways to paraphrase just about anything and paraphrasing isn't inherently wrong. It's like just spelling a chord a different way on an instrument.

This gives "just be happy" vibes. There's some of this that's true, there's some I'm not knowledgeable enough to say either way, but some of this is just blatantly false. The one thing I like about this video is how it points out how fear is a reason behind many of our difficulties in the first world. The thing that isn't true is that "just do it" is the solution. He safeguards this by saying how "this will only work for some people", but that just points out part of the problem with it. Getting over these fears is a lot more difficult than "just do it" and there can be a lot more blocks than just that. Life isn't that simple. Get help from those around you, or go to a therapist who's qualified and knows what they're talking about; don't rely on a video of someone speaking from personal experience with no background in the field of study by own admission.
@jimmym3352
@jimmym3352 2 года назад
He's not saying just be happy, but to do it. There's a difference. It's not terrible advice, some therapists will actually suggest "fake it until you make it" type advice. Just doing anything can be productive. That said, it's not going to work for all situations. If you lack good looks and skills/intelligence, just doing something has a good chance of not achieving. At the end of the day you are still limited by how others perceive you (though you can have some influence on that, but not all), and you are limited by your skillset and intelligence. Some skills can be improved, true. But it's not like I'm ever going to be an NBA player or a famous musician, I simply lack the skills and I'll never get them. So the Just Do It advice has to be tempered by acknowledgement of your limitations.
@annaairahala9462
@annaairahala9462 2 года назад
@@jimmym3352 Yes, some situations you can fake it until you make it. But that's the problem, it's only some situations that works. Take someone with clinical depression or general anxiety, both of those inhibit you in ways that you can't "just do it" and there are other ways to work through it. I think generalizing this as a solution when it's really only a solution for a few can actually do more harm than good. If you think you need help, seek help and don't just try to do it on your own.
@hcxpl1
@hcxpl1 2 года назад
@@annaairahala9462 I agree with you this has some pretty bs vibes, but I also do thing the heart of this advice does apply to many things, we can so easily get caught up on thousands of reasons for not doing something that we don't even try, but, if we did, we would realize it is not the monster we thought it was or that, at least, it is manageable. For bigger things like quitting work I do think this advice is too impulsive, but I'd say the main idea is to simply move on: if you don't like your job, at least look for other options and stuff. And for smaller, simpler things I'd say you'll never do something by thinking about how to best do it, that will only give anxiety, but the best course of action is to go on, do things, make mistakes and than correct those, evolve little by little. So yeah, I agree with you it is way too oversimplified I guess it is needed bc that encourages people to simply do it, and I feel many of their problems would at least become significantly easier if they did, and for those problems that don't, well, then they would have to search for more specific help.

Success is only defined by what you think it is and, like everyone elses view on it, is probably fickle. I recently gave some attention to adhd and its symptoms and I afraid that I might have. Before knowing about it I always blamed myself for being "lazy" and feeling weird that even having physical energy I wasn't able to do many things and I just accepted that was procrastination. It's worrying the way we are raised, in this neurotypical standard society. For some people It will demand attention, profissional accompaniment and a lot of patience and acceptance. I don't think this video works to me, but for someone else will do. (i'm not good writing in english, sorry ;v;)

@syarifaamaliamarwadinata5623
@syarifaamaliamarwadinata5623 4 года назад
Harsh Patel the aggressiveness in environment may refer to the fast-paced, full of expectations kind of circumstances. it could be from the people or the system one is currently living in. just how modern society in most cities works. we are aware of our responsibilities, and are trying our best to fulfill it. but there are some who can't accept the way we are, judging us based on our small mistakes, frowning upon how we live our life or do our jobs, claiming that we are worthless if we do not achieve something daily, or maybe tightly restrict us from our freedom that sometimes we could feel like we're getting pushed and pushed to our limits till we feel like going down physically or internally and unable to do anything. something like being ordered to "do this and that! obtain those targets! achieve these goals!" i can't say for the "the laziness as defense mechanism" part, but well i could somehow relate to it. maybe by stubbornly claiming that you're lazy, you can't be pushed to do things so you're free of your burdens (i mean, yeah, when i was in college i'd use this trick to just shut everyone else so i can rest from anything i don't want to do). maybe, that, i guess.

@@syarifaamaliamarwadinata5623 my English is poor. So i cant corectly descride my opinion. But i will try. Some people had toxic relationships with others( family, school, College) and pretended that they were tired or bored or lazy to do something for them. Lack of support and lack of sincere relationships makes a person vulnerable to society. A person who feels vulnerable constantly lives in the expectation of troubles... and laziness becomes their only available defensive reaction to a possible threat.

this video has some key flaws... one that i think it misses is that fear drives us to overwork ourselves. Fear can motivate us to improve but then we crash and burn and it causes terrible things. The reason people arent content with relaxing and letting themselves stop and enjoy life is because theyre afraid as well. If you consistently just do it you can burn out (i speak from experience)

also think saying "motivation to do nothing" is flawed, you dont need to be motivated to do nothing, doing nothing is the default and you need motivation to do something else, and if you look at it this way the entire video falls flat unfortunately. imo the real issue with lazyness is complacency, people arent motivated to do stuff if theyre satisfied with their situation, you might want to write a book, but your survival instincts kicks in and questions why youre giving yourself more work to do when youre surviving just fine, if you "needed" to write that book for whatever reason, things would be different

Very true. But it's paradoxical. Fear is on one hand what's stopping them from taking action and as you cleverly pointed also the thing that makes the push until burnout. I've experienced both ends (mostly burnout from overworking leading me to a physical illness). I'm not a fan of productivity. There is a more balanced approach that "just push through". Don't want to give unsolicited advice, but since you suffered similar stuff as myself I wanted to share what helped me. If you're looking to resolve this unbalance a great thing that has worked for me and many people I worked with (same types) is to learn to listen to your body (great start is start a body scan meditation regularly is you haven't. And do some short "grounding" breaks all through the day that helps centre and become intentional. Also as almost no-one mentioned in this sphere of "productivity" work with feelings and nervous system is important It takes a fair amount of practice but is well worth it and makes it so that actually you can work more effectively and be more relaxed at the end of the day. Hope this helps a little, but I'm happy to point you to anything that might help.

This video also very much paints the picture that you get to try again if your first attempt of just doing it does not work out. This however is not the case for a lot of people and just doing it might just end up ruining their lives. I think this is the reason why so many people are scared to try something, because of the loss of time and resources that comes with it. Or at least that is my problem.

I hate the phrase "just do it". It gives no value to conversations and focuses on will power that is finate. It doesnt encourage you to find long lasting solutions just hits your insecurities of being lazy and giving you momentary motivation out of shame. It really is something that I think brings more harm then good, it may be a kick starter but often is something that just brings more shame, bc it is "that easy" "just do it" "what is wrong with you" "why dont you just do it?" and other similar thouths that ran over mine and Im sure not only mine head. I WANT TO NOTICE, that I appreciate that in this video it was described the more productive way of thinking about it. It was actually really good, but in general understanding I dont think that most ppl feel like this about this phrase. I myslef heard that definition for the first time.

@larkaiio3376
@larkaiio3376 2 года назад
@@thefunnylovingomega3429 but then again, it is a healthy approach to motivating yourself and getting started, this phrase can do it, but I still think that in majority it is more demotivating then motivating. Especially that it is often used in comercials with talented athletes or something like that, running marathones and climbing Mt Everest. Wich in fact both of these activities and others like them need something more then just will power and motivation, they need sustainability, dedication. Motivation and will power eventually run out, you have a bad day or smth. It is not reliable. And your actions need to be reliable in order to succed at long term goals. Thats why I think it can be harmful, bc it shifts focus from sustainability to short term motivation and shows you like everything is possible with it. And its not true. So people say at the start of the year that they are gonna work out, in a motivational kick in a theme of "just do it". And almost nobody last, and most of the people that dont last feel worse about its then in the start. It doesnt promote acceptance to our feeling and lazines wich are both natural, it doesnt show how to work with them not against them, and overall it doesnt give you any real solutions just a vague idea that everybody can "just do it" but you are just too lazy for it.
@larkaiio3376
@larkaiio3376 2 года назад
@@thefunnylovingomega3429 I think that if you refine this phrase, make it more about acceptance like you did, it wont be damaging so much, it wont give you the guilty feeling that it does in its raw form. But not many people do that, most just see this on a motivational addidas video and it goes into their subconcious mind. And if u dont have other tools to work with motivation it brings guilt.

This video resonated with me due to recent life circumstances. There was something looming over my head for weeks, and the only solution was to JUST DO IT regardless of how boring or unpleasant it was. Normally, that is not an issue for me, but I had developed a sense of PTSD regarding this particular issue/situation and so I felt uncharacteristically put off by it. But at its root, it was simply fear. Another fear is that if you keep moving forward relentlessly in life, you will actually go somewhere. Things will change and time will pass, and that can be scary in its own way. But you have to realize that time will pass either way, and if nothing has been done and nothing has changed, then you will simply keep ruminating about the same situations endlessly. Moving forward does not mean forgoing self-reflection. It means making significant changes and progress in your life, so that when the time for self-reflection comes, there is always something new to think about and new options to appraise. It means means making the most out of the limited time we have to be alive.

This video perfectly described what I'm going through. For 15 years, across 3 different residences, my Ex and I worked on building a model railroad. We spent a lot of money, developed a couple of skills, went a lot of places and met some interesting people in the process. Aside from raising our dogs, it was really the only project we agreed on. To this day it's still a common, friendly topic and the pieces are in a couple of tubs at her place. I don't think we ever ran one train totally around one circuit of track but we don't carry a disappointment because "just doing it" was more fun than it having been done.

theoriginaljean introverts are really good at thinking. Since I am an introvert why not do what I’m best at? Thinking. And Jordan Peterson is wise, if you like this stuff. Honestly this stuff changed my life and did something my parents didn’t do so well at. As to teach me how my thoughts work and opinions and attitudes. I feel a lot better as a person, I get more confidence too which is something I never had in my life. I could talk about this for hours.

Sam The Fool I get it but at this age there’s a lot of confusion and too much focus on the mind and on problems... couple of more years, it gets more graceful. More clear. You start learning about the nature of men. You start learning about things so abstract. Early 20s is an age of a lot of confusion and transformation, so the way they try to handle it is with this weird intensity and unnecessary puzzles. But that’s the process we must all go through. Don’t mind my comment too much 👍

From personal experience it can really help to just recognize the actual source of fear instead of just thinking you’re bored or lazy. I wasn’t actually to lazy to do my research paper, I was scared I wouldn’t be able to finish on time. Instead of working on it, I just tried to avoid the source of fear. I’m not too lazy to go to work, I’m just nervous because I’m still new and it’s a stressful environment. No one wants to be lazy, and thinking that you are probably makes you feel guilty. Have some compassion for yourself and see that it’s not just you, there’s a reason. Thinking that’s its just your personality or that you don’t really care can keep you down. Something like being afraid or depressed is not your fault. Try to take steps to make yourself feel more at ease!

This is what I've been realizing recently. The being afraid part is very correct..... but for me I don't fear being alone or "in my head." I never understood that quote that's like "humanity's problems stem from an inability to sit in a room quietly." It makes me confused, bc there's truth to it, I've def seen it in others, but it feels like that's the only problem I *don't* have... my problem is that I don't have this problem. I feel most comfortable being alone, in my head. I don't really care too much about validation from others, and it seems that's what ultimately drives everyone else in some shape or form... It makes me feel guilty and broken... because that's the norm. Like everyone else, I do have a void inside, but it is not people-shaped, and that is very strange... I do love my friends, but I always feel empty. I need a goal, or a calling. I'm trying to stop being fearful so that I can get out there & figure out what I want, but it's hard. Trying to find something to fill the void, whatever it is. Something that can bring me peace. This video was very helpful, thank u

I relate to your feelings on many levels, what I decided to do was sit down with myself and truly, truly try pull my purest interest from out of me, regardless of limits, risk to pursue and other factors, and just listen to what I suggested forth. For me, it was actually animation! This surprised me as I literally had never pursued art and got an F on my first exam, yet I still wanted to do it, deep down, even though I feared being incapable. So I stuck to myself, never showed anyone my work and now I’ve produced some great little scenes and I’m building ever-skywards. Another thing I genuinely wanted to do was volleyball. All my life I had been severely unathletic but now that I’m in a new area nobody knows me, so I’m just gonna go for it. The point is dig deep to find what your raw interest gravitates towards, and, well ‘just do it’, however small that may be, however hidden your practice is from everyone else, just follow your interest, because it’s unique and will lead you to great places.

I found found comfort (help to fill 'the void') in digital art and programming. My girlfriend in gardening and some craftwork (macrame). My brother, in sports (skate). My father, in gardening and cooking. It's a process of trying to find what makes your day better. You may not discover in the day 1, but take some time to research what you could enjoy and get you some fun. Also, start small, always. Better have something done and ugly, than beautiful and incomplete.

You have the opposite side of the same coin, basically--which means, pretty much, you need to be more vulnerable and show off to your friends more. Trust me, it sounds awful at first, but (unless you have shitty friends, which is a whole seperate problem) it will make your confidence soar; it's not necessarily to do eith validation here, but reinforcing to your brain that you can do things, whether other people are involved or not. The rest will come with time and thought

How does my logic infer anyone is on the same level as a trained professional in regard to surgery or any skill for that matter? Ask yourself why you're upset over the idea of fear being the problem? As someone who suffers from depression, I can completely see how my fear of failure or making the wrong choices has overridden my sense of purpose and determination which led me to feeling sorry for myself and hopeless, which, in turn, created my depression. I own that. But then you might be pissed off for other reasons. Idk but I understand why you would be annoyed over the idea of fear being the cause of these problems. It's annoying to admit to feeling fear especially when we've been ignoring the emotion for so long.

There's another fear, a more pernicious fear. The fear of commitment to one possibility. When you commit to one possibility, and take the rime to bring it into actuality, the field of endless possibilities narrows significantly, and what if you don't make the right choice.
