From a neuroscience perspective, it's a fact that it's easier for kids to learn language than adults. The brain is more plastic in childhood because it needs to prepare the child for the environment in which it expects to inhabit. Therefore, almost all early experiences (from language learning to child abuse) have a stronger impact on the brain than adult experiences. However, it's still definitely possible to become fluent in another language in adulthood; it's just not going to be as effortless as it is for a child. I do want to add that I completely agree with you that people tend to overestimate the difficulty of learning a language in adulthood. Child or not, the human brain will adapt to be able to communicate with other humans. Therefore, if you immerse yourself in a language (movies, books, music, whatnot), you _will_ learn the language.

I am 52 and I learned Spanish between the ages of 27 and 31 and I speak it fluently. I have been learning German for a year and a half and can now speak German of course not perfect but I can say what I need to say. I have never lived in Germany or a Spanish speaking country. I learned with immersing myself in the language concentrating on learning to speak and ignoring grammar . As an adult I actually believe I have an advantage. for example I already would know what an object is. A child would have to first learn what is the object and then learn the name of the object as an adult I already know what an object is I just need a new name or different name for that obj.ect in the other language. Thank you for the video it's very encouraging

The tip about watching TV/films and listening to music - I'm an EFL teacher, and I've always told my students to listen to the radio, to English music, have the TV on in the background etc when they're doing other things at home. The idea is that even if they don't understand everything that's being said, their brain is still getting to know the rhythms of the language as it's used by native speakers, which will then translate into their own language use as they expand their vocabulary. I've been using the same technique on myself as I've been learning Dutch these past few months, and I'm convinced it's a good technique!

Good morning from Australia! :) I am currently studying linguistcs (spanish major) and you explained second language acquisition in children vs adults really well! It’s tiring listening to everyone bang on that only children can learn to fluency. I wish I started on my language journey when I was younger but waited until I was in my 30s and I am definitely not deterred! I find the challenge is as an adult is having to go back to using simple language. I remember when I started learning Spanish I was frustrated about having conversations at toddler level 😂 I’ve come along way and all the hard work is so worth it! (But I still have a very, very long way to go) x

You've been inspiring to people who are interested in learning foreign languages such as myself. I'm a subscriber from the Philippines and I adore how you tried to learn Tagalog basics. All talk about how it is nearly impossible to learn a new language when you're much older has always held me back. Thanks for helping debunk language-learning myths! ✨

discipline drive passion or motivation is the key for learning new languages for adults; if you make excuses you will never learn... how old are you now, you said you were still learning new languages when still 24, wow you look good then as it infers you older than 24 and still pushing ur language limits, and you must have a lot of drive...very good and inspiring to some of us now starting this multilingual journey.

I agree, with the way language is taught in schools. I am canadian, although i was born in montreal, i lost my french because I moved out of canada, and then moved back to the english side. it was hard any of our classmates to speak french because they focused on grammar. When I started to learn spanish, I tried learning through pictures, and seeing the words, and it had helped alot because i was forcing myself to not translate. I realized it was a lil easier for me to think in spanish, because I can't think or speak in french even though i studied it for years. I just wish that i had polyglot friends who speak french and spanish in nyc to help me speak it more often but i cant find any.

Look for language exchange meet-ups. You can these in any major cities. Especially if you’re in NYC, there is a huge Spanish-speaking and French community.

*You are absolutely right!* I have always firmly believed that language was first spoken before rules on grammar would be established. Therefore, foreign language lessons should all be CONVERSATIONAL. Children have to speak to their parents on a regular basis and oftentimes they just wanna be heard and express themselves, not be grammatically correct (as many adults are), and they're very rarely concerned about making any mistakes in the language they are learning. One is NEVER too old to learn the basics of any new language and this is DEFINITELY is a common misconception and you certainly don't have to be "gifted" to learn multiple languages. You just have to find out about the methods that are effective for you personally. I have furthered my studies in modern foreign languages in my late teens, and early adulthood, and people still had difficulty believing English is my native language lol.

when you are youg at 6 your brain is like a sponge and can absorb 6 languages or even more , and thats what happened to me by age 7 speaking 4 ghanaian languages. Now i am in my 40s and yearning to learn Swahili, Zulu, Xhosa, Yoruba , Wolof and Igbo and its not easy at all like it was when i was younger. But then again when i was youngeer i learn easy cos i played with kids with spoke those languages. Before end of 2020 i must learn to speak conversational Swahili cos right now TAnzania music is all i listen to (Diamond, Zuchu, Mboss, Rayvanny, Harmonize, Ali Kiba etc etc )

I kind of laugh when people say kids can learn languages easier. Think about how long it takes for a child to start actually speaking, and that is with 100% immersion in that language. It is just as you get older you don't have that free time and you feel like you aren't getting it in a few months than you will just never get it.
