I used to be a talented painter and an accomplished musician and I made some very poor decisions and spent years on heroin and on the street...today I'm happily sober and married and thriving and I just did my first piece in years! Your channel inspires me and clearly legions of other human beings. What a lovely thing you share with the world. God Bless:)
I'm weening myself currently. I don't regret the journey because I kinda found who I am and appreciate "me" in a much more realistic and honestly more experienced and mature way than I believe would have been possible any other way. That being said: I will be so happy to leave the weight of the angry monkey that is heroin behind me. Furthermore, I DO NOT recommend ANYONE else attempting this as a method of self discovery. It is so easy to lose yourself in the deadly and distractive world, and once lost ... Well, lost is lost. I am very happy for you that you were able to pull yourself from under the dragon's grip! And I truly thank you for being so honest and willing to open up here. Your comment gave me a great amount of needed strength. Thank you so much!

No one does the heated skillet and paper technique anymore with the crayon. Basically, you have an electric skillet and you place paper down let it be heated and you draw on top with said crayons. The wax melts on contact as you draw. It was the best way to do it.

I love how these two art pieces really illustrate both Jazza’s chaotic and anarchical artistic energy and also his focused and refined capabilities. It’s like each piece represents his two extremes. Love it.
Jazza does it all wrong!!! You fix an electric iron upside down, such as in a vice on a workbench. It just needs to be held firmly, so it won't move and is upside down. Geddit? Then, when it's heated up, warm your paper and draw away. So you don't need a hotplate, though you can only draw on as much area as the electric iron, and just move your paper round as you draw. Have fun!!! (I bet someone gets this wrong and puts their crayon directly on the iron and makes a mess. Derrrr...)
I’m so glad I’ve stuck with Jazza through all of these years… and I’m really glad he’s still continuing to put out content that shows his love for art, experimentation, and creativity. Like the fact that he’s been doing this art channel for so long and STILL finds new stuff to do is so inspiring to me.
We used crayons to make home made iron on transfers using coloring pages and extremely thickly layered crayons and then ironing them onto white cloth to make quilts for kids. Not sure how well it stands up in the wash tho.

You missed a method you could have used here, which is melting in layers and then peeling layers back with a knife/pointy stick still looks cool but I wanted to see you find those colours underneath in other ways, and you get to add your own textures then rather than relying on melted wax awesomeness (you could have peeled back the sky to reveal mountains carved into them that might have been unusually satisfying given the background would weirdly pop up above the foreground)
I have a better recommendation! We used to to this at a kids' fun center. You use an electric griddle set pretty low, cover it with foil to protect it, then put your paper on and get artsy. It's so fun the way they glide and get melty as you draw.
Omg TOTALLY seconding this idea. Rather than heating up the medium, heat the canvas. Would LOVE to see how those turn out. It'd be further TOTALLY different from how these two turned out.
@@chibinecco1981 It's pretty easy to do at home for fun too, if you have an electric griddle. The kids' place used to leave gloves out for the kids to wear so they wouldn't burn their hands, but I didn't always wear them.
@@bookworm4174 good to know! I don't think I have an electric griddle? But if I ask around a friend may. I also don't do a lot of art in traditional/physical mediums, but... You could probably grate the crayons into a waxy sand, which could in theory be applied in fine detail to a canvas first painted with some sort of adhesive medium. Once complete, a brief stint in a low oven could bring the image into focus.
I was wondering if resin would work out over it, I feel like a regular varnish wouldn't be enough to prevent cracking but wasn't sure if the resin would work out either.
Jazza I’m a high schooler, and I used crayons. And they are misunderstood medium, I’m gonna list a few things that’ll make coloring with crayons better. 1) DON’T USE TEXTURED PAPER I noticed that the paper you used was textured, for crayons you need smooth paper with little to no texture 2) YOU CAN BLEND THEM much like color pencils, they take layers and you need to start off lightly so then you can build up the color and blend 3) Follow up to 1) the wax does stick and doesn’t change shape, but again you used textured paper thus making the wax uneven and unable to stick I’m not being a jerk just simply pointing out major errors you did. Overall love you content!
I'd love to see how chiseling areas would go. I feel like that has to produce a thick layer of wax, so it could be neat to carve away a few areas to reveal some different colors. Almost like those scratch away arts
Pre-melt some colours in small pans (as you did in the first big test) and pallet it onto the canvas with heated pallet knives. Heated knives should keep the wax mobile on the canvas and allow you to blend colour. You can then proceed with oil painting techniques. Definitely a "Bob Ross but with melted wax" video possibility!

My father used to use sealing wax and a skewer. Melt the end of the wax, scoop some off with the skewer and press onto the surface. He made lovely textured pictures. I don't know if you could do the same with regular crayons.

Jazza: I hate crayons Me, whose main medium is crayons: 😅 My crayon tips: - Use marker first! (I use alcohol based so I don’t kill my paper, but I’m sure water based works fine too). This allows you a base of color to build on - Blend them! I personally have been using a white crayon to achieve this, but I’ve also heard good things about alcohol based blenders - If you hate the texture (I personally love it), just scrape it off (you can use your nails, a coin, or a scraping tool). You can also combine textures by only scraping parts you want to emphasize - Don’t be afraid to sharpen your crayons (they fit in the big side of a pencil sharpener, or you can by a specially made crayon sharpener - it’s literally just a pencil sharpener but they replace the blade with plastic so it’s not as harsh, and it maintains the flat base and point shape of the crayon)
Not enough fire. and since Crayons are pigmented wax, melting them down to a liquid state is the only true method of actually using them in an actually nice manner. The only problem is since there are no good tools for mixing crayon colors. you can literally only blend crayons while melting.
Imagine having a metallic tray with, separate compartments each filled with different coloured crayons, continuously sitting on a hot plate. Then you could use them like ink, with a paint brush, and do some really detailed work.
I'm not sure if that would work.... It is a sticky stuff, and it hardens quickly. Maybe some hard bristle brushes could live up to the job, but most certainly you will have to throw away them after. And you would need a brush per colour as you can't wash the wax out. Not even with turps as the crumbles of dry wax aren't easy to remove from anything they stick to... Or if you managed, the previous point still stands, you most likely can throw out the brush as it would be damaged beyond help after the procedure.
The Crayola Experience lets you do something akin, but the problem is, the wax cools too fast. You practically have to have the hot stuff sitting ready to go intentionally to paper. Unless you're into chaotic abstract looking things. I've been more successful with crayons using watercolor paper and using a scratch method and using 93% isopropyl to sort of smooth out the colors. Similar to a method used with colored pencils. Not perfect, but nicer.
@@katalinelo8011 or you could build it in a hot box, like a sandblast cabinet with a heater piped into it, so atmospheric temperature was above the wax resolidification point, then the crayon would behave a lot more like acrylic paint.
@MsSilentlightning Batik is different in that the wax is used as a resist to prevent a dye from acting on a base material. The wax does get removed. Whereas encaustic uses and leaves the coloured wax as an integral part of the artwork.
I know you love making your own art supplies, I've actually made my own crayons before with paraffin wax and oil paint! It works pretty well and you can get really fine control over the color blend
@@SpookyscarySayge I should mention I used the cheap paraffin Gulf Wax that comes in blocks, I broke one up with a knife and melted it in a double broiler like chocolate. When it was completely melted I added the paint, keep in mind it will get a bit lighter when it cools and may separate a bit at the top and bottom so stir it regularly. I just broke apart the big puck that formed in the bowl but you could probably pour it into molds without issue. I haven't tried much drawing with it as I mostly needed a specific color wax for a seal, but it seemed to put down color just as good as other crayons
I have always had crayons and coloring books on hand and I am 53 years old. Crayons are not just for kids. It is so freeing just to sit down with a cup of coffee or tea in the quiet and let your mind roam as you create something fun or beautiful.
I'm spent most of my time watching this video imagining either Jazza's kids standing right off screen watching and being horrified with what Jazza is doing with Crayons, or Jazza at the store getting the Crayons and as he's walking towards the register stopping and going back to get some Crayons for his kids, so they don't fight him for the Crayons.
I love how in Both of them There are some crayons still unmelted either on the sides or everywhere around and That really brings me back to the simplicity that these are just crayons❤😊
10:53 I love unintentional artwork, there's a face in the middle of the canvas. Some random dude giving you an eyebrow while smiling with a large nose and a 'lit' beard.
This got me thinking - now that you experienced working with wax, it would be very interesting to see you try making a batik - it's a style of art where you paint a piece of fabric using wax and dyes. Complicated but very epic :D
My sister did portraits of people in melted crayon. She'd block certain spaces, like how you paint watercolor. She taped off the spaces that needed to remain white then used a hair dryer to drip crayons on the canvas. She'd even mix colors by holding 2-3 crayons melting them at the same time, then pushing them around with the hair dryer on the canvas until she got the right color. It was beautiful when the tape came off, it looked exactly like watercolor but made only with melted crayons.
I love the painting’s contrast because it’s as if the mountain is separate and colorless from the background which is being filled with color from the crayons
Wow, those turned out beautifully, Jazza!! I've wanted to try this melted crayon art for the past few years, so perhaps this will give me the nudge (or shove) I needed to finally do it.🖍️

When I was a child I would use a hot plate on low with paper on it and draw with crayons. They would go on so smooth and mix beautifully. I could be as precise or messy as I wanted. I'm 40 now and the colors never faded. My lovely aunt taught me this trick.
I think the next logical step here would be encaustic paint: essentially pigmented soy wax. Painted from melted colors kept in pans on a heated palette, using a heat gun to fuse each layer as you go.
I came here to suggest that, too! Would be much easier than directly melting each crayon too but that could still be done if it gives an effect you can’t get using encaustic alone, I guess :)
Also there are loads of tools you can use to paint and even draw with. From mini irons for big areas to metal pens with nibs that allow you create very fine details. Along with heated metal wire brushes as well to provide texture. It would genuinely be amazing to see what Jazza could do with an encaustic art toolkit.
@@fredericapanon207 I haven't done any for years, but I have all the kits and blocks of wax... Jazza has sort of inspired me to dig it out again - at least we don't have to peel the paper off a truck-load of crayons! :D

I love the new style of outros Jazza has been doing. Everyone expects the old outros where they tell you to subscribe and whatnot, but Jazza just takes it out of the park with his shenanigans
So nostalgic at my preschool we had a class with melting wax crayons with an old iron for clothes that did not have a steam function. Made some very cool art.
Cool video! One tip, though: pressing harder on crayons, while making them more likely to break, makes them look better. SuperRaeDizzle actually did a cool video showing this, where she drew the Mona Lisa with crayons.
This turned out so good, kinda gave me vibes of something called Encaustic art which uses wax to paint, this'll probably get lost amongst the comments but would love to see your take on that.
I dunno, I think Kasey Golden gets a lot of coverage in her crayon pieces. Though she does use color pencils for the lineart, which might have been the way you could have gotten crisper lines in the OG medium. That said, I am a fan of the melted look. It was interesting to see what you could come up with. I think the flame/lava look is the best approach, but I would be curious what else you could do with it.
Love how you play and experiment with materials. It's very satisfying to see a talented artist let go of the rules and consistently innovate. Also... If you ever want to try drawing with crayons again, I used to draw with them on a pretty toothy brown Kraft paper (like the kind that comes in rolls for wrapping packages). The brown paper serves as a great mid-tone and takes advantage of the opacity of the waxy medium. Great for layering crosshatched built up color fields, but I'm not sure that's a style you'd favor. Another big plus for the Kraft rolls, you can make really big drawings for cheap.
"I can take it further." I think that's the next step. Can you find a way to do a detailed painting with melted crayons? Could you do a human figure or dragon? Inquiring minds want to know!
Now that you dabbled we need you to dive in and try to make a seriously true masterpiece with melted crayons!! This was interesting and fun to watch, ain't going to lie going to be trying this now ✌️
Oooh, if you used an electric hot plate to keep it melted you could possibly lay paper over it and make prints! This was another fun video, thank you! Bell with the bell bell 😁
My mom is the creative one in my family and she has a special iron (as in like an iron for clothes) for melting crayons. It's essentially like you used your spatulas, but warm, so it is not as rough and you don't need to use your blow-dryer to melt it. The iron obviously doesn't have steam or anything fancy. It was specifically made for this purpose.
It just blows my mind to think about how much experience he has, to be able to go from dabble to dive so fast, As well as how much more he's learning in every video I'm imagining milestone-videos of him combining everything new he has learned into one epic art project... Please do that 😄

"9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed."
@@khamyar6121 you're not alone! Lol heard my husband leave for work and it woke me up. I get anxiety attacks sometimes when I'm alone so I freaked out a bit and saw Jazza's notification and it distracted me lol
I'm absolutely certain that Crayon has changed their formula. I used to use them specifically for linework before shading in with pencils, and I know I used to be able to build and mix color, even if it wasn't flawless (and they definitely smell different that they used to). ETA: _And_ they definitely used to be hot glue gun-able!
Wow! The melted images you made were crazy amazing, I’ve turned old crayons into crappy candles lmaooo, I never would have considered using them for art in this way. Fantastic and super fun to watch!
When I was young I would use a pencil sharpener to make kinda like crayon glitter dif colors in dif containers n glued on on my art work ...I liked what u came up with 🥰
I want to ask you if you ever made Jesus your lord and your savior have you ever thought about turning to God? God loves you and wants you to come to him and he will give you salvation for free you cannot earn your way to heaven its a gift that you take from God through Jesus. Did you know that God is our Judge and even though He doesn't want anyone to go to hell alot will go there because they will try to earn there way into heaven God is our Judge and Jesus is our savior from the sins we committed. Since God's our Judge everyone will be in front of God on Judgement day some will be with Jesus and go into heaven and others God will send into Hell. This is why alot will go into He'll because they trust in there heart that there a Good person and they think that if they change there bad ways than they won't Go to Hell but since God's a Good Judge he cannot let sin be unpunished. that's like you on earth killing someone and then telling the judge you won't do it again! So don't put me in prison! That won't work. The only thing that will save you is if someone paid your fines and the judge can Justly and rightly let you out because someone paid for your fines. These turned out awesome! The Bob Ross inspired one is my favorite! But can they be hung up in a home? I suspect dust would stick to the wax like it does old candles. Also, during a heat wave... lol
The best way to get wrappers off any crayons is to soak them in some semi-hot water. Not lukewarm but warm enough to melt the glue-holding wrapper together but not hot enough to start melting the crayon. As an art teacher, I do this with smaller broken pieces and melt them into silicone molds to create new (differently shaped) crayons.
I'd love to see you try encaustic art. Wax art, or melting art. In high school we used a griddle or hot plate. Had little metal tins and clear paraffin wax. We would either use Profesional wax color or you guessed it crayons. It seemed wood was a great canvas for this medium. It helped absorb, and keep it in place. Crayons also give a nice gloss finish when dry.
Yes! This was like the kid version of encaustic painting. It would be fun to see a more professional take on the theme. Plus it would give you plenty of opportunity to show off those Bob Ross-ish pallet knife skills.
I love these effects from the crayons, Both finished pieces looked incredible!! You left me wondering what if you add heat to the first picture you made?? Would it melt the crayons on the page filling in the gaps in the water colour paper?? 🤔🤔🤔
Hot wax can be extremely dangerous. It's highly flammable. A safety warning would be good to add (especially as kids or people have no clue about using this medium may be watching these videos). Otherwise, this is a great technique.
Want better detail and texture with crayons? Use a hot press paper, rather than the very deliberately chosen highly textured cold press used for the first doodle. Also, you can get some seriously cool effects by making your own scratch boards with crayons, without electrical appliances or flame throwers.
Paint a piece of sheet metal with white primer. A smoother surface will be great for a consistent crayon stroke. Then use an electric warming pad underneath. Draw on metal with cold crayons. They will be softer as they touch the warm surface and blend better.
The drawing, the experimental melting "plates"/pictures all awesome. I wasn't expecting to watch the whole video. That was interesting, thank you! ... round of applause requested for Rob. 👏 Yay Rob! You're awesome!👏
Hey Jazza, I really want to see you draw something digital with the nividia canvas. Its an AI that helps to draw and I want to see what you could do with it.
I love melted crayon art! I used to make a bunch of them and sell them at music festivals and other convention type events. Also. I'd suggest using a heat gun, on the low setting, instead of an actual flame. You can also run them through a hot glue gun if you have an extra one that you don't mind covering with wax. (Edit: use a smaller glue gun)
In my art/mixed media art journal I use 3 things crayons, pencil sharpener ( dollar store type) and my heat tool. use the shavings and melt with heat tool making sure to hold straight up as to not blow away shavings. It's nice in a small way
I was really hoping you would try hitting a traditional crayon drawing with some heat too. I imagine it would soften the medium for some better blending and spread, allowing for a more dynamic and detailed approach.
Ironically enough, when I was growing up I layered colors in coloring books. The secret is 1. use smooth paper. Rough paper doesn't work 2. is to go light on each layer 3. use circles to color; this helps with the fact the crayon is reshaping 4. sharpen on occasion
