This isn't to encourage or discourage anyone from getting a computer science degree or going the self-taught route. It's just more of a discussion starter - a discussion to be had with yourself to figure out the right path for you. It all depends on your preferred learning process, your ultimate goal, and your resources as to which path may be best for you (college, self-taught, bootcamp, etc.).
Personally, I wouldn't have the skills I have today if it wasn't for obtaining my computer science degree. Going to college was exactly what I needed - but is it right for you? That's the question I help you try to answer.

I would say a computer science degree starts to make more sense if you strive to do work that is actually closer to computer science (machine language, processor design, working on a language or operating systems) since it can teach you a deeper understanding of how computers themselves work, whereas a job as a regular developer(working front-end on a website, going through data, etc) feels almost overkill to have a whole CS degree just for that and would say the self taught route makes more sense

@theUnemployedProgrammer

Agreed. However, college does give you the foundational understanding of why you are doing what you are doing. I spent 5 years learning coding on my own before college, and I can see that college has put all the pieces together so to speak. Where before I knew how to do things but didn't necessarily know why I was doing it that way. Just my experience though.

Hey I’ve got some really great news to share with you, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died on a cross and resurrected on the third day so you may all have eternal life. If you believe and repent of your sins and put your faith and trust in Him as you would a parachute jumping off a plane at 25000 feet up in the air, He will give you eternal life in heaven as a free gift and I promise you, He will change your life forever as He did mine. He is the ONLY way to heaven and He loves you all. Please think deeply about this with urgency because this is your eternal life and soul, you don’t know when you could die, meaning you could die at any moment, so please consider this with all your heart. Tuition is a problem but definitely not the main problem. The principal cost for an in-state full-time college student is like $6k a semester which is $48,000 after 4 years. The problem is that those are unsubsidized loans at 8% interest rate so by the time you get out you are now at $70K absolutely ludicrous.

the problem with colleges is they need to address inflated administrative costs.. BUT remember what colleges are for also.. NO Colleges and no $$.. equates to less public research.. (money needs to be spent to pay researchers to advance science)... Otherwise many scientific breakthroughs will be behind corporate doors.. (think beyond CS).. Research is not limited to the sole purposes of making $$ (ie like Google, or Vaccine research.. but advancing science.. I should also note, there are some research (ie suveys..) that can only be done by institutions and NOT corporate entities.. (due to perception bipartisan view points... once someone hear's ie GM or Google is doing the survey.. they think this is a ruse to spy on us.. etc).. Back to Ken's comments.. it really comes down to what you intend to do.. If you want to be doing CS and doing R&D.. a advanced degree is a must.. because you have to do research!

I’ll be 41 when I graduate next year. I have 2 young kids at home. This past year has been enormously challenging. The CS degree appealed to me because I’m old, I had no portfolio and 20 year old skills I needed to badly refresh. The scope of the courses covers everything I needed to learn but also the contacts I’ve built so far have been valuable and hopefully I expand these further. The employment opportunities which follow are many and varied which also appealed but if you know what you want to go into, like web dev etc, then yes, boot camps may be much faster and more specialised.

Omg. Thank you. This video was made so perfectly for me. I have considered my options with CS, Information systems and Information Technology Management. For me I have been offered a full ride at a really good school. Not Ivy League but’s it’s in a big city and highly regarded in the city and state I live and for that I am blessed. Money not being an issue led me to asking if I needed the Science/Mathematics and theory of calculus, physics ect. In my ITM degree and others at my school we can focus on specializing in software dev/web dev and I could have the flexibility to take all the CS courses I wanted to that interested me in replace of calculus and physics 1,2 and 3. This video on top of a few others have hammered down the fact that I’m better off doing what I’m more interested in considering the jobs prospects are basically the same and extremely transferable. God it feels good to have confidence in a major life decision and have so much content made to help me make the most informed decision possible.

@TumblinWeeds
@TumblinWeeds 3 года назад
You should note that the open source cs degree, while great for its price, does not give the knowledge equivalent of an actual cs degree. I am 3 months into second year and I can do basically everything on those courses except for machine learning, which is offered in 3rd year. And that’s the main problem with online learning. The stuff you can get for free is often very simple, beginner level stuff, but you won’t know that if you don’t have a curriculum. I remember cruising through a few of those courses in high school, feeling confident, and being crushed in the first cs course I took (I skipped the intro class). The online courses I took, along with most courses online, are primarily language/syntax/module based. In uni, they don’t even teach you languages :( it’s just something they expect you to pick up yourself while they bombard you with “program runtime and optimization” and “prove the correctness of finite state machines”. What I’m saying is, universities don’t consider languages worth teaching, which is probably why they give it out for free. When learning online you need to fish out the useful stuff amidst the junk, and beginners might find that difficult. (Note: everything you need IS available online, the harder stuff just tends to be in textbooks and little known Indian youtubers, rather than the flamboyant courses you find everywhere.)
@ikennaisiogu112

Here's another thing to consider too. With a college program, most jobs end up training you from the ground up anyways especially coming from a junior position. I have a bachelor's degree in Information Technology (not CS) and ended up with a CS Internship. My employer more or less covered what I needed to learn and I could have gotten this job / internship with a boot camp. College is very expensive both time wise and price wise and you really need to know why you're going when you're going in order to make the most out of it. Especially when you consider the average student loan debt today

I agree with you on most points. I really have just started my journey in this realm, but so far, it looks like nothing beats the actual hands-on coding. Yes, there are many online resources, however, many of these give you really basic things and don't explain how to use them in an integrative way. Also, many of these resources are actually just commercials to sell some class. As for college, you'll spend a lot of time on subjects you need to graduate and will likely have limited time to develop the skills you want. You will be self-taught no matter which road you choose. I'm of the opinion that creating a stellar portfolio is the best way. You'll develop yourself in the making of it and your confidence will be secure because 1)you know what you know and 2) know you can teach yourself anything you don't know.

@wulymammoth

Hit the nail on the head! I will mention one thing, though, that hardly any online resources mention - the dreaded interview prep phase. A nice portfolio will garner some eyes, but I’ve found a lot of people work small projects here and there that look great, but are unable to pass a technical phone screen and even less making it to virtual on-sites with nearly a full day of technical screenings involving ad-hoc problem solving and coding. In Silicon Valley, where I am, the most common denominator is the dreaded data structures and algorithms interview that, like most of the courses peddled, do not ever mention or teach, because the truth is - they’re difficult. As someone self-taught, I had avoided learning them for a looong time, but when I did, they’ve been very useful in many contexts even if I don’t use them everyday in my work
@wulymammoth
@wulymammoth 3 года назад
@Sirin Kalapatuksice “You can learn data structures and algorithms online” - did I mention that you couldn’t? You’re emphasizing the self-taught part which is not what my gripe is... It wasn’t obvious but I agree with OP for those going the self-taught route and encountering mostly courses filled with fluff, but my primarily issue is with those courses and even many bootcamps that bait people and then leave them out to dry when it comes to interview time - they do a one week intro to DSA and then tell the student, “Go practice!” Many courses don’t even at all. Many courses market folks to become zero to hero without ever a mention of computer science or DSA when the reality is different OP put emphasis on “stellar portfolio” - unless somehow we all magically agree on what stellar portfolio means. From what it sounds like, you assume a stellar portfolio implies having covered CS topics which is not true to any stretch of the imagination I was really not in disagreement with OP, but trying to cast light on an oft-overlooked point. But I’ll be happy to be enlightened if you’re familiar with great courses that combine industry relevant projects with CS. Please, share!
@wulymammoth

@Sirin Kalapatuksice are you going to drop those bombs on someone that's trying to learn to be a developer on their own? Shhh... you're scaring people away! "If u want to just get a job in programming and be a programmer then grab a book like this one..." I disagree with this -- I will direct you to exhibit A: r/cscareerquestions (sub-Reddit, and exhibit B: r/learnprogramming who has used advice similar to yours and gotten pretty poor results Do you have data or anecdotes to back up your claims and is your claim universal? Notice my original response is in relation to Silicon Valley specifically. Perhaps your advice works in a different geo, but I made sure I declared where I was
@wulymammoth
@wulymammoth 3 года назад
@Sirin Kalapatuksice Am I? Or are you? I live in Silicon Valley that's a bubble, but I don't know what you're in... I'm going to tell you now that you're dispensing inaccurate advice. How about you share with where you are geographically so we can be more precise about where your advice even applies. I'm not conflating the two terms based on what you qualify to be a "software engineer" in Silicon Valley. But to avoid further "confusing" discussion with you, let's assume that we're on the same page that Google is one of the top technology companies in the world and they hire software engineers (at least that what titles are). I have both friends and relatives at some of the biggest tech companies in Silicon Valley that do not have even an undergraduate degree and have climbed to L7 (which ranges from 2-11 presently), which is "staff software engineer" or "principal software engineer" without a degree. Most of the people I know are L4 (mid-level) and L5 (senior) at Google. I also know people with a masters degree in EECS (electrical engineering and computer science) from top 5 universities (Stanford, University of Pennsylvania, University of California) in the U.S. (I don't know where you're from) that can't clear the interviews. I'm from one of them (but did not study CS). I've interviewed with start-ups to large companies in Silicon Valley. All this said, I can say with 100% certainty that you are wrong and I don't know why you're here misinterpreting my original comment and then dispensing perhaps advice that applies to where you are, but not where I am or generally. Again, I noted what I said applies to Silicon Valley I don't appreciate being patronized and I'm sure you don't either, but when push comes to shove, I had to lay it out for you the way that I did...

As a software engineer with a computer science degree, I can definitely understand both sides of the argument in this video. While a CS degree can provide a strong foundation in the principles and theories of computer science, it's not the only path to a successful career in the field. It's important to consider your own goals and interests when deciding whether or not to pursue a degree. Like you sort of touched on in this video, the main reason I’m choosing to do a CS degree (plus self learning) as opposed to just self teaching is because when I do work, I want to be able to be the most confident I possibly can. If I self teach I would just feel like a rag-tag dev and have literally no belief in myself, constant imposter syndrome, etc. Also I’d be really lacking in math skills self teaching, same goes for theory and algorithm / data structure stuff that is good for interviews.

I personally do believe that you should get a CS degree because you’ll learn more about how differently type of problems are solved ( Example: - Introduction of Synchronization in OS created problems of deadlock), or Theory about Networking (subnetting) or Database theories. You’ll also realize that same concepts is applied into multiple types of software. I think you can learn all of these by yourself but it would be hard compared to learning with teachers.

Hi Forrest You asked a question about outdoor CS jobs, here is my experience. Note, I would describe these jobs more as “out and about”, not so much “outdoors”. Although not always... I was a CS /SWE intern at an aerospace company. During that time I was part of a team that managed the final sw release of an airborne product. Some of those job duties would include: spending lots of time on the product mock-up of that product in the lab, going to the flight line and testing the product, and sometimes the more senior SWEs would go on flight tests. Continually we would spend our time at different parts of that facility supporting that product. Our team members would also go on 3 month “tours” and support that product in the US And overseas. We also worked with field service reps, those ppl are probably outside and with the product the most. Where the product goes, they go. Unfortunately those two roles involve almost no coding. It’s your other CS skills that are used more often

Its funny that you mentioned going to college and figuring out what you want to do. I was originally perusing a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering. So they made it to where the students in that degree had to take intro to programming with C. I took the class, and I felt this passion take over me for coding. It felt right to me and now I am a CS student at the University of Central Florida.

I also think there's a BIG difference between US CS degrees and UK, in the UK the degree is a year shorter (also in masters) this is because you ONLY focus on your subject (which IMO is a much better system). Debt is also typically much easier to manage in the UK as the loan can get written off on top of you not working a job past a certain threshold needing to not pay it back.

@halowaffles
@halowaffles 2 года назад
@@stankdog1357 If you've lived in this country for more than 2 decades it's horribly apparent that I'm correct. College tuition became obscene as late as the mid-90's. It wasn't always this expensive, and their is no actual reason for it other than to create a classist divide, which, in turn, is a better solution for the corporate-run globe-state we live on today. They want people educated enough to listen to directions and direction only, but not educated enough to see the political deception that's taking place before our eyes. If I'm wrong, then you're simply viewing the world through your own myopic lens based on pre-conceived notions that are demonstrably false. "it’s due to governments involvement in subsidizing education and loans" is the biggest cop-out answer to exist in this field of topic because it's, again, demonstrably false. Go on and perpetuate the lies you're being told constantly. My opinion is formulated FROM business owners and entrepreneurs, not to mention executives in the field of the educational system itself; your statement reeks of immaturity on the matter. What's next? You're going to try to tell me all about the branches of government and how they work? What else did you just learn yesterday? Bro, there's plenty of college activities you can do in college that can make you a stronger programmer. I remember my school had their Hackathons, and we also had midterms and finals to do. Plus, there was actually a huge game development community there. I'm literally the reason why my old school has a MAGIC academy that's completely devoted to game development. I think when it comes to majoring in CS in college, you need to go to the right school. A school that has a good program. That's why going to college to figure out what you want to do in life is the worst advice ever but, hey, it's real. If I could really do college over, I would say have some idea what you want to do, and find colleges that are good for that specific skill set. Really look into what that college has to offer for getting an "education" versus going there just for the experience. At the same time, as technology is growing, there are more and more institutes with I would say "proper" computer science courses. At least in the US.

i think anything computer is a good idea. I sure wish I would've asked myself more about what I wanted to do before starting a cs degree. I do like it though, I enjoy the abstract math and all that too and the system thinking. but, in retrospect, I think an MIS degree for most people is probably enough. with MIS you still get programming, if you like it you can just teach yourself some more, and you also get a focus on networks / databases / infrastructure / project management + business classes to put things into context and walk out with a well rounded understanding of things. MIS is a little more surface level understanding than cs is in particular to the math behind the scenes and programming. However, just saying "i want to learn how to code" is not a great justification for starting a cs degree - because you can do it with MIS or really any degree or no degree! so you gotta like it. both mis & cs are very practical.

I just got my computer science degree in August graduating with a 3.9/4.0 GPA. It's really hard to find a job right now without experience because of the pandemic and everything's going remote. I've applied to over 20+ companies and I get the same response, "We've chosen to look into other more experienced applicants." I have applied with a decent resume, cover letter, and website portfolio (which I created myself) and still no one is willing to even look at my portfolio since I haven't had a job in the field. Right now, it's probably better to learn to code on your own and see how far you can get without spending money on school. I ended up only owing 10k for my whole college experience, but I feel demoralized because I've tried so hard and all companies want is experience and not the title. Not saying I'm giving up, but I can contest to the fact that it's not all about the degree and title and it's still hard to find a job. I say try to learn on your own for now till this mess is over and see what you can accomplish and learn. See if a company will hire you and pay for your college, or do a bootcamp program. Thanks for the videos. Still trying to learn more each day even if I get rejected.
