You Should Be Keeping a Research Notebook 

No one ever taught me this before. I always write down notes and comments on A4 papers, especially when studying from a reference textbook.. but I found your method much clearer and more systematic, so thank you so much!

This is brilliant! I finished college many years ago, but I still use notebooks for notes on books I'm reading so I won't forget. I've made "cheat" sheets for my son, who is dyslexic, on books he has to read for school with characters' names, settings, events, maps, and pictures. Grid notebooks are my favorite.

I’ve been an engineer for over 40 years, and I also used bound notebooks for a good part of my career, much in the same way that you do. But I switched to using an iPad with a bluetooth keyboard/case, along with the Notability app about 7 or 8 years ago, and though I hated to let the analog notebooks go, I have to admit the digital “notebook” works a lot better. With the keyboard case, typing up notes is as easy on the iPad as using a laptop. All your notes are in one place and are always accessible. They’re searchable. They’re backed up in the cloud, so you don’t have to worry about fire, loss, theft, etc. It’s super easy to paste in photos, webpages, pdf documents, as well as to mark them up. You can change colors and fonts easily, so you don’t need a bunch of pens and highlighters. With the Apple Pencil, you can include hand-drawn diagrams, schematics, whatever you want. Yes, the up-front investment is higher, but my last iPad lasted about 7 years - that’s less than $100/year. And the iPad is multi-purpose. I’ve even been able to leave my laptop at home for many business trips, since the iPad does pretty much everything I need to do: email, videoconferencing, writing code, making notes, using an e-reader, browsing the web. When I first started, I admired the older engineers with their shelves of old notebooks, documenting an entire career. But my digital “shelf of notebooks” now weighs about a pound and is about the size of one my old bound notebooks, and pretty much replaces everything else I had on my bookshelves as well.

I know it seems like a lot of work, but even younger students could benefit from organizing their work this way. In fact the more disorganized the student, the greater the benefit. I would have loved to try it out with my students. It is a great learning tool.

Thanks for sharing this method. I make similar notes in my journal so I can reference ideas, insight, dreams, etc. I don’t color code, though. Could be helpful. Thanks again.

Damn, my note taking style has been completely different to this and although it has worked pretty well for me so far (I'm in my final year of undergrad), I think I'll have to incorporate your referencing style. I never thought about how much time it can save when the pages are numbered and alternate pages are reserved for figures and additional info!

In 2013 Obama signed the AIA America invents act. It really limits the usefulness of about this dating stuff I guess your high school teacher taught. I mean it's it's good to sort of have a record and everything but at the same time it's not as useful as it used to be. If anyone can find prenumbered notebook without all these stupid lines on it so I can just do free hand stuff I really appreciate letting you know.
