Omg! When you said Chelone "Pink Turtlehead" I could not believe my ears. Never have I heard anyone mention this plant in all of the years I have been gardening. In my 7a garden zone it is low maintenance and disease resistant. I love that it blooms in late August, but before that, the dark green leaves look so pretty. I must say that my Chelone is in a fairly sunny location with average, not moist soil. It is a beautiful clump-forming perennial but not invasive. It is easy to divide and deer resistant, which is one of the reasons why I'm sure you were attracted to it. As you can see, I cannot say enough positive things about this plant. My Chelone has been in my garden for 15-20 years!

Hi Jolie! Oh how fun!! I only learned about this plant last summer, and now I'm so excited to try it. Sounds like a wonderful native perrenial. I'm trying to be more consious of adding some more natives. I do hear that they can take some sun, part sun. Thankfully my JM garden area still has some time before it becomes a shade garden. So I will have some time for these to grow in a part sun garden. Thank you so much for sharing your experience, I'm even more excited to grow it now!

I’ve mentioned turtlehead for years, both white and pink. If you have Chelone lyonii, just be prepared for it to spread steadily over the years. If it’s in shade, then you’re also gonna want to give it a prune when it’s about 4 inches tall in the spring, to prevent it from flopping, while in bloom.

Hey Steph! Glad to see you. You have inspired me to try coneflowers from seed. Here, in Ark., I have been purchasing the established plant for a minimum of $16.00, plus. Hi Ruth! Yes, for sure perrenials can certainly add up. It really comes down to time is money. If you have the time, and patience growing from seed is a great option to save. Otherwise buying the established plant might be more worthwhile. I love the process of trying things from seed. I find it so satisfying. Have fun winter sowing!

You inspired me to go buy seeds of some of the perennials I was going to buy as plants. It is indeed gratifying to raise plants from seed. Some will bloom the same year, though in a restrained way. Echinacea "Cheyenne Skies" is a trooper -- there is really no point in paying for plants. I usually cover the seedlings with wire cloches when I plant them out to protect them from the deer, woodchucks, rabbits, squirrels and any other creatures that might pull them up. Once they've rooted in and established themselves I take the cloches off. I am focusing on plants that I already know will do well in my garden but that I want more of. Next year I will pay more attention to gathering seed!

Barbara, this makes me so happy! I'm so glad I was able to be a source of inspiration for you. Yes its about time to bring out those containers, and let the weather water and take care of them from here on out. I hope they do beautifully for you! and now we can start our winter sowing which is so exciting. I'm sure you noticed the short demo of how I do it in this video, but in a few days I have a video posting of a "winter sowing quick start" that goes over this again. Then all you have to do is read the instructions on packages as to how deep to sow seeds, etc. The daisies you can start now (February). The Bachelors Buttons I would do in March, and the Gomphrena I would do in April (does better with a bit more heat). Dont forget to presoak your gomphrena seeds overnight before you sow them in your winter sowing container. Have fun!

Looking forward to seeing your results in the spring -- I haven't had much success with winter sowing. My area gets very little rain in the winter and not much snow seems to go in the lid opening. I did try to water them once in awhile but with temps below freezing most of the time it just seemed to freeze the dirt. I have tried balloon flowers twice and didn't get any to germinate. Your enthusiasm is catchy and I'm going to give winter sowing another try. Can't wait to see your results
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted Год назад
Hi Sandy, Me too! Hoping they are successful. I'll be sure to share either way. Winter sowing took me a couple years to get used too, and there have been successes and failures along the way, but each year it teaches us something. Thats the fun of it, we're always learning. Give it another try. The most important things I find are that they have proper drainage, and if your not getting enough rain/snow, to make sure they don't dry out by providing a little extra water/moisture. Also, sowing seeds to proper depth. If you check off these steps, you should have a pretty decent success rate. Good luck!

Nice flower selecitions! Ive struggled with flowers. But success is the most thrilling feeling. 🌺 My front yard get so many deer I have to grow a perennial from seed, plant it the first year in my back yard (fenced in) and the next year dig it up and move it to the front. Then I can see whether or not the deer will devastate it. Even the plants labeled as deer resistant get chomped, sadly. I would love it if you would make a video on what plants you grow that deer don’t eat or how you keep them off?

Good informative video, Steph. I'm thinking of trying winter sowing. Do you ever water your winter sowing containers if rain or snow are scarce? I live in southeastern NC, zone 8a, and we have not had a lot of rain this winter.
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted Год назад
Hi Jennifer, Yes I would certainly supplement water, by spraying into the hole at the top of the jugs if water was scarce. I have to say over last several years i haven't had too, but that changes from year to year. If your not getting enough water, and are in a warmer zone, it could vary. I would certainly make sure they don't dry out. And if they've sprouted, and you get a hard frost, cover your containers with a blanket temporarily to protect them through frost. And if your temps warm up too much, unseal the tape and open the tops in a shady protected area to give them air, and then close them up at night. So that it doesn't get too warm in the container (mini greenhouse), and cause the seedlings to get to warm and die. So just some things to be aware of in a warmer climate. Hope this helps.

Hello Steph, Thank you for the very informative video on growing perennials from seed. Question: How many seeds can be placed in one winter sowing jug? I am excited to try the winter sowing method for the first time this year. As always, thank you! 🐞
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted Год назад
Hi Catherine, Your very welcome. It really depends on how big your containers are, and also how big the seeds are. The bigger seeds I would sow less, smaller seeds you can sow more. Do your best to space them appropriately so that when its time to take them out of the container you can seperate them out more easily. Big seeds I may only sow maybe 5, say 1 in each corner and 1 in center, or even 3 rows of 3 for a total of 9. Smaller ones I do more. And seeds that are itty bitty that require surface sowing because they need light to germinate, well they are so small theres no measuring, you just sprinkle and hope for the best. Hope this helps.

I also didn’t have luck with lavender. I live in zone 6a, but close to lake and I think proper zone is more like 5. My daughter live 6 minutes from me but not close to lake and I believe makes a difference. I love lavender and I just order seeds from Baker Creek together with echinacea seeds. I’m new in winter sowing, just started this year. If lavender will be also good for winter sowing? Thank you for all your informative videos, I learned a lot.👍😊

Hi Anna, Good to hear you had a similar experience with the lavender. Try this variety, it may do better for you. I would definitely winter sow the lavender. I'm pretty certain thats how I started mine. A quick online search told me they are good candidates for Winter Sowing. So I would say give it a go! Have fun!!

I am new to your channel. Thank you for sharing all of your tips. Have you read the book “Cool Flowers” and RU-vid channel by Lisa Mason Ziegler? Turns out certain flower seeds can be started in the Fall. During the winter months they develop their root systems and over the Spring the plants will be thick and healthy and blooming. Her book is GREAT! Let me know if any of you have heard about her method. I have learned soooo much from her. 😊

Hi Tammy, Your so welcome! I have not read the cool flowers book, but have heard great things about the book and Lisa's method. I love that idea of throwing seeds down in fall and them establishing for the following Spring. I have had this experience with self seeded foxgloves. I will have to check the book out soon. Thanks for sharing.

Last year my winter sown seeds did great at germinating but then many just stalled (despite sufficient water). I used an organic potting mix but am thinking of using something with some fertilizer in it or using a water soluble fertilizer after the seeds germinate. What do you think?
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted Год назад
Hi! It's possible that they got water logged and just needed to be moved out of the winter sown container. They really take off once they get transplanted. Then once they've been planted out in the landscape for a couple weeks, feeding them with a diluted water soluble fertilzer can help. I agree it's a great idea to use a cloche or wire basket to protect the seedlings.

Great suggestions…thank you so much again Steph…I just had to order the echinacea varieties……do you know if they should be stratified before sowing the seeds if not winter sowing. I am seeing conflicting information regarding this. Many thanks again 🌱💚💚💚
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted Год назад
Hi Elizabeth! I would say yes they can benefit from cold stratification. In my opinion any seed that is a cold hardy perennial, could benefit from cold stratification. If your going to winter sow, you can just place your container with the echinacea seeds out during winter. If your going to indoor sow, throw your seeds in the freezer for a couple weeks before you sow them. Hope this helps.

Have you noticed if any echinacea have crossbred? I’m sure one of my white turned purple. Globe thistle is nice and Russian Sage. They can handle sun and dry sand. I have shade, but not moisture so I have to put blinders on when I see those flowers 😅. Yes, Swallowtail has nice selection. I am very patient especially when I’ve seen some plant prices.

Hi there, I haven't had any crosspolinate yet, mostly because I haven't collected any of my seeds to grow on. The coneflowers I have grown from seed, were varieties that I grew right from packs I had bought. They were true to the package I grew them from. The Blue globe thistle is beautiful! I just bought some russian sage last season. I'm overwintering them and hoping to find a spot to plant them this Spring. Yes seeds are a little bit of effort, but the cost savings is great. Thanks for watching.

What temperature should the outside air be for starting seeds in water jugs? We are really cold here in Minnesota…should I wait until late February? It’s below zero for the next week! 🥶
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted Год назад
Hi Patty, You could wait until February, but winter sowing is ol to put out in winter. Particularly for seeds that are hardy in your zone or ones that can benefit from cold stratification. Maybe wait til below zero temps pass this week, then start some? But I do think you can see them in the next couple weeks and be fine.

Hi Bella, I typically follow the package instructions. However, I do think that most seeds especially perennial, can benefit from cold stratification. So just from my experience, I would either winter sow them if you live in an area with cold winters, or I would throw the seeds in the freezer for a couple weeks, then try sowing them. Hopefully that helps.

I need some advice on what plants to plant in front of our house. It faces NNW and I am struggling. I believe the encore azaleas are not getting enough sun to bloom. This is their third year and they are still small and never bloom. The dianthus between them stays really small, like a carpet. The hosta on the northern most side burnt up in the few hours of sun in the afternoon, but the limelight hydrangea looks good. I am trying to give the azaleas some fertlizer and give them another year to see what they do. Do you have any recommendations? The front gets between 4-6 hours of sun (4 in the cooler months and 6 in the summer).
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted Год назад
Hi Melissa, I do think Azaleas do better with some sun. If you find the limelight hydrangeas are doing well for you, stick with those. The little lime, stays more compact at about 3 x5 tall and wide. I love my limelights. And they coordinate with some many flowers like nepeta which is beautiful and long blooming.

Hi Linda, that is so fun, being central to 3 states! Congrats on the new property. That much land sounds so exciting!! I'm in zone 6 so it would be difficult to say what blooms for a long time in zone 8 which is 2 zones warmer than mine. However, I'm sure there are many options. For me in my garden, Nepeta (cat mint) blooms for a really long time, and i've also heard great things about calaminta. Hope this helps.

So basically in January you winter sow seeds and they will be ready for spring in a nice size plant?
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted Год назад
Hi Cora, Yes. they are ready to plant come late spring. Some plants get larger than others. The benefits are letting nature grow them vs. Taking up space indoor with grow lights. Also, winter sown plants are typically hardy and dint need hardening off as they are already being grown in the elements.

Hi Cathy, They do eat them, I know they usually are drawn to them. BUT, I spray really regularly in Spring & Summer to repell them. I really like Invisible Fence Deer and Rabbit. I'm also trying some wireless deer fence spikes. I'll have to report back on how those work after I've had some time with them in my garden. As long as they only ate the blooms, the roots would still be in ground, and return next Spring.

I'm starting mine beginning now through 1st week of February. I live in a cold climate and these perrenials are hardy in my zone. I use the Winter Sowing method. But if you were indoor store seed starting, you would want to start when the package instructions say too. Also, I think its helpful to lookup whether or not the seed variety your growing needs cold stratification. If WS'ing, you can just sow them and set outside if you live in a cold climate. If indoor seed starting, you can throw the seeds in the freezer for a couple weeks before starting them. Good luck!
