This is a fantastic review. I appreciate you highlighting the strengths of the novel while not shying away from calling out its biggest weakness (the treatment of women characters).
The role of women aged perfectly fine. The goal is not to be progressive as you would like. That doesn't matter, the goal is to represent the times. They should represent all of this in the movie
I’d say you nailed the review, minus your claim of Catch-22’s flaws. This is a satirical novel about flaws, without them, there is no story. Instead of reading a novel about the greatest generation through woke eyes, try stepping back and read it with historical and cultural context. You’ll find a greater appreciation and grow your world view. I’m a 20 year military vet, this was the most realistic, gut checking and savage portrayal of my livelihood that I’ve ever come across. It was also the most difficult book I’ve ever read and probably the most important.
With regard to the attitude towards women in the book being largely restricted to them being the objects of sexual desire by the servicemen, it probably reflected attitudes towards women at the time in which the novel is set, especially amongst young men. Also bear in mind when the novel was written. If Heller had written the book today he would have probably described the women in a different way.
Enjoyed the review! I've just finished reading and going through all the videos I can find on Catch-22 and yours is the only one I found so far that acknowledges the problems with the depiction of female characters. That actually was a concern I had while I was reading. Good work. Keep it up
Great insight, while also addressing the reason a lot of people stop reading it before getting too far. Stumbled upon your videos this morning - already a big fan. Keep it up!
Just finished the Hulu adaptation and immediately downloaded the kindle book Version. Really enjoyed the show. Will probably repeat watch it. I’d love to see your thoughts on the adaptation on Hulu.
wow this video was really insightful and i didnt click away immediately like i normally do, which says alot about the attention economy and instant gratification more than anything else but i feel like i struggled so much with this novel but then i finally finished it and its like there are such gems of passages all over that are so funny and so smart and so irrevocably human, catch 22 is alot of things, but boring is n o t of them and i really wish so many schools wouldnt ban it yk BUT ANYWAYS YOU ARE CUTE AND YOUR POINTS WERE VERY WELL ARGUED V.V DEBATER BOI AND YES
I'm 50 this year and I think it's still the best novel I've ever read....kudos to you great review for someone who looks so young but no mention of milo and the syndicate? best wishes and take care
A remarkably lucid review of a novel that is indeed difficult to read. Also, I liked how you could perceive, and eloquently point out, that this magnum opus remains screamingly relevant even today! Great job with the review my friend.
Before you blow up with requests (and if you want one that is guaranteed to repeatedly get seen) could you PLEASE do a clean and relevant review of The Outsiders to show to middle schoolers? Unless you hated reading that book when you were a kid. Or even if you did.
James Wallace Did you even watch it? Its probably the best adaptation of the book ive seen. But its really hard to capture the book cuz its a lot of nonsense, lets be real. I think they did an okay job with it.
the problem with Americans is that they are not natives there by can never ever really understand the value of freedom no matter how much they apply the word freedom to usage.
This book did not age well at all. It is filled with very childish and very dated humour. The whole Major Major thing is funny when you are 4. It's just a cringe fest.
You are the worst I was looking for free spoilers reviews and literally the first thing I see is part of the story ( so I guess ) If i chose to read it I would be waiting on the assault part all the time
