I'll never understand why Neural won't just do what STL Tones does and have an automatic input adjuster option where you just select your pickup type do a few chugs and it automatically sets the input in the plug so you're hitting it correctly going in :/
@eds4754
@eds4754 6 месяцев назад
Neural’s way is more accurate than auto sensing adjustments. And STL explained how to adjust for their plugins with the same level of accuracy, the automatic thing is just a quick ballpark method
@MrLLtalk
@MrLLtalk 6 месяцев назад
Depends on guitar pickups, guitar tuning ( lower tunings will be louder than regular), people shape DI signal with eqs limiters and compressors before amp sims and other factors. And also depends on plugin itself for neural dsp it is recommended between -14dB to -9 dB. Waves plugins for example -18db. Personally - I just use my ears, if it sounds good then leave it, there is no magic sweet spot.
@Sinisterbvnny
@Sinisterbvnny 6 месяцев назад
It's always preference! But this adjustment could give more accurate representations of the gear these plugins simulate. It also will give a cleaner signal going into the plugin. So, if you normally have your interface gain up, it might raise the noise floor resulting in more unwanted sound being present in high gain tones. It's just nice to have accurate information! Do what you will with it. 😁
@eds4754
@eds4754 6 месяцев назад
the point of the calibration is to preserve loud pickups and guitars being quieter than quiet pickups. It only matters if you want an amp to respond the same as it would in the real world, if you want that it’s an easy thing to adjust

Interesting. I'll try this. I recently discovered having something that converts instrument 1/4" to XLR the tone was greatly improved. That was an accident. I was experimenting with a preamp, but when i actually bypassed the preamp, but still had the routing going to XLR the software jumped to life and sounded much better.

Um, basically play what sounds good to you. Also, I would hate to be the sound engineer who gets to work with so quietly recorded DIs. I mean, record as you always did and just lower input sound right before the amp sim plugin - In a plugin, not on the interface
@Sinisterbvnny
@Sinisterbvnny 6 месяцев назад
The only issue with that is if your interface introduces a higher noise floor that would dirty your signal
@spaceexpireaudio666

what sounds good, sounds good. As I`m using NAM profiles most of the time, the input is always different and I experiment with it a lot. Also thanks for reminding of how outdated my interface is haha

Hi! This is great! Ive always noticed the amp sims sounded better with less input, but now im wondering if i would run into any issues if i would want to reamp the DI signal (which would be quite weak). Would i simply turn up the trim level on a reamp box to compensate and it would be the same or would there be some noise issues?

I wonder what difference has been noticed in terms of the playing "responsiveness" once you set the interface to zero and go this route. Because i find olugins to be lagfy wgej compared to my real amps. They all sound great, dont get me wrong. But im forever lost in a quest to find the most responsive plugin out there. So far the Otto Audio one has come closest. If this method helps, im down to give it a go in the next few days.

I've been messing with this technique since this video and it feels more responsive to me. I've been pretty happy with the sounds I've been getting with this change

I watched Ed's video months ago before Cody and Rhett making video response. I dismissed his idea because I didn't understand it and I was already so familiar with the sound of my AI with gain knob at 10 o'clock. After I watch Rhett video, I rewatch Ed's video and try his suggestion. I found out certain plugin sounds better and the other not so much. Let me give you example. MLS CB4 is too muddy and flubby when my AI gain knob is up. When it is at 0 and adding a little bit input gain on CB4 itself, miraculously it sounds perfect. The same thing also happen on Th-U rig libary BE100 pack. I don't get such luck with MLS Burger. It sounds thin and lifeless.

@@Sinisterbvnny Yeah sorry :) If you do these kind of things often, i guess they are ways to automate/failsafe that process and make it easy (pretty sure this is a common thing with youtubers and mixers using a voiceover/talkback mic). Like : - sidechain muting / ducking - having to press a button (or pedal) to talk, so that you can't play guitar at the same time - having a big red warning light when talkback is on etc

As I already replied to another video of this sort, I really don't understand where this comes from all of a sudden. I just assumed it was common knowledge, or maybe it's because I have read the manual to my interface, I don't know. I have always treated the front input of my interface as a classic instrument input. (since it's marked with a guitar) and set the gain to zero. I haven an Audient ID14MKII
@Sinisterbvnny
@Sinisterbvnny 6 месяцев назад
Well some interfaces don't have a specially marked input like that. I have a presonus and it has 2 combo XLR/Line inputs. Also, who reads manuals anymore? 😅
@TheMetalFoundry

@@Sinisterbvnny I fully understand that :D although I admit I have sometimes forgotten to turn the volume down that particular input after using a microphone, as it is shared with the mic/line input on the back. 😅 Besides that, cool videos. man!

Bruh.... I believe you overthought it too much. I highly recommend you to check a video where Misha Mansoor tells and shows that he always record at the max possible amount of gain, almost at "yellow/red zone" on his interface.

Yeah but that's the Periphery sound - crazy amounts of gain. We don't always want that chaos, nor can we all control it quite like Misha 🤣
@serpentsbane9166

I believe in that infamous Misha video, he was coming out of an AXE-FX into the audio interface, which is completely different than going straight into the a.i. It did not occur to him or any viewers apparently, to note the difference between running direct into the A.I. vs. running other devices in front of the A.I.

To me this is hilarious this is only an issue because the guitar community at large has been lazy in learning how DAWd an production works, I remember when I first got into modelers I would always hear people talking about how oh the tone doesn't sound the same in your room as it does at a venue and they're hard to dial in and all this, and what I eventually discovered is that most guitarists aren't good enough with the technology to understand what they're doing, Don't know why everyone thought you should be boosting the signal with the Mic pre amps 😂😂

Turning it up right before clipping was never right, and anyone that was doing that had no idea what they were doing. Hard strum peaks should be at- 12 going into the interface. If you can’t get it that low you need a di box.

recording so your DI peaks target any specific level is going to normalise single coils to the same as humbuckers and basically means you’ll have to totally guess what would give the most accurate gain response from the amp. So aiming for -12dBFS peaks is as bad as aiming for just below clipping or any other target (as far as accuracy goes).
@DangleSan
@DangleSan 6 месяцев назад
I find this topic hilarious, cuz I called this out years ago, too many guitarists moved into the digital realm with out doing research on anything outside of guitar VSTs, it's the reason many thought modelers sounded like trash cuz they didn't realize NOTHING on a digital amp should ever be turned up to 10, I have Sims and modelers I started died laughing cuz I realized ALL the issues guitarists were complaining about stemmed from not understanding DAWs production or proper leveling, all guitarists at large had to do was read a couple of PDFs on producing and NOONE WOULDA had these problems, AGAIN I find this hilarious cuz I called it years ago, not understanding the difference between a guitar and a Mic when using amp Sims it's just so funny😂😂😂
@kevinwhite6172
@kevinwhite6172 6 месяцев назад
@@eds4754 the interfaces are not the same. I’ve had multiple interfaces that are supposed to be at 12dbu. Most of them clip with the gain at zero, some don’t. Using a meter to peak -12 is only accurate way to set the levels. If you’re worried about single coil vs humbckers use your hottest set of pickups to set the level.
