This song reminds me when I lived in PA all alone and had no friends and was going through a bad break up and losing my best friend to suicide. It just always brings back tears.
You can watch them sing it at Carnegie hall in a couple of videos and it's pretty good about as good as this as this and they sang a few other songs as well

The Sunset Tree album is really the one where he talks about himself. Nearly every other song is told from the point of view of a fictional character that he made up.It's not "crying", it's storytelling. Sad stories just happen to be more of his thing, just like horror stories are Steven King's thing. People have types of art they create, and his are sad stories told through the medium of music, for the most part. I don't see how that could be called "crying".
its not about using how you were beat up as a way to get attention. its about writing about life experiences and empathizing with others who share those experiences. I see his music, the art he creates, as a tool to bring happiness to those who share similar experiences and may feel alone and isolated.
