It's not ok in Australia either. The driver also didn't pull into the bus stop. In a really situation stopping next to the bus stop with a bus zone out of the lane of traffic would not be acceptable.

I am a bus operator with New York City transit for 10 years and I can tell you that has happened plenty of time with people pushing the elderly or people with a disability out the way. it’s madness.

I used to have a problem with a large group of teens pushing and shoving and sometimes trampling one another to board at a Q-stop (a stop where passengers are meant to line up) so I enforced the rule...if you are NOT lined up when I'm approaching with my trolley that is a signal you're not ready to board so I'd just drive past assuming they'd be ready to board when the next trolley came in 20 minutes...they soon learned to Q-up or else!

It's a lot safer is you have a reversing camera, that many newer buses have.

How'd you get so lucky to got the Folsom 10 line today. Back when I started in 2020 that was a job for CBS and I was lucky enough to have that for the entire month of August. Was my first RT fixed route since leaving Yolobus 3 months earlier.

I am a driver for Metro Transit in Minneapolis/St. Paul MN. We have already had 3 pedestrian accidents in the last month, with 2 of them being fatal. If we did what is being shown in the video, it would result in termination.

You're caution about backing up buses is what I was always instructed as a CDL bus driver also - NEVER BACK UP YOU'RE BUS! So imagine my surprise upon moving to Oahu Island Hawaii - where Honolulu is located - to a condo at the terminus of a cross-island, city bus route, where the normal operating procedure is to BACK UP THE BUS to realign it for the turnaround back into town!!?

I was driving a NJ commuter coach last week on Broadway in Lower Manhattan, and pulled up tight behind an MTA local bus that was discharging passengers, to drop my own people off. Of course it was that bus's last stop and they were actually parking for a layover. I learned something, but that day I had to back the bus to continue on. Thankfully my bus had a working backup camera.

It was dusk, I was waiting in my wheelchair in the dark, the bus driver didn't see me in time and overshot the stop. She pondered for a while on what to do. She then finally backed up her bus to pick me up. Gratefully! Now I was a motorcoach operator back in the day and we would back up our 45 footers anywhere and everywhere, anytime as needed. Otherwise we couldn't do our job. If you didn't know how to park your bus, parallel park or what not, could mean you missed your lunch with the group and you went hungry, so you learned how to park anywhere real quick!! You got so good at backing up, going forward or backward were all the same. And we didn't have cameras back then.

No this is not a good idea to do that

at vta in san jose, we can only back up when we have someone behind us to stop traffic and/or prevent us from hitting something.

People are rude and inconsiderate. That's normal! But conduct exemplified by the driver is unexceptable. This definitely could've turned out badly.

Also, it's like ONE guy who pushes the lady while standing BEHIND everyone else who wouldn't have even seen what happened. So why would they be collectively punished with such risk to their safety? It's a dumb click-bait video that makes no sense for so many reasons.

Always appreciate your videos. I am a bus operator in Portland Oregon. You're absolutely right, most people are courteous to the elderly and ADA folks. Even going as far as lifting the seats . Also, we are not allowed to leave people behind, or "pass up". That being said, I have been getting quite a few folks lately that are nowhere near a stop trying to flag me down. Sorry dude. This is a bus , not a taxi cab. If I was running hot, and you were heading towards a stop, that's one thing, I got you. But just chilling on the sidewalk, I'm down on time, there is no stop within 300 feet either way? Nope.

Of course, this staged video was specially filmed from all angles for RU-vid. Not one bus driver would do such nonsense, he would simply kick a passenger out of a seat for the disabled and put a woman there. and yes, you are right, for the most part, people who use city vehicles are more respectful of each other and would most likely help this woman get in first. because the bus driver will not be in a hurry until all the passengers have boarded.

On Metro DC, I had that happened to me. The woman was in a wheelchair and they bum brushed her and got on first. On Georgia Avenue, 70 line! This everyday norm… the skit was funny because they would be mad it that was done to them. However that was not safe.

That driver did wrong. More than once. You are absolutely correct. You should never leave people behind even if they deserve it (in your opinion). And you should never back up with your bus (unless you get a spotter first). You are right. I agree with you.

Here is how the US differs from nearly every other country: our laws are based heavily upon *justice* vs “fairness.” Therefore all of the liability falls upon the person who has been given the most responsibility. True justice is blind, so for us, the bus driver and his or her employer would be liable, and of course, suffer lawsuits. In other countries, however, it’s up to the individual to be responsible for themselves. For instance, in someplace like Türkyie or Afghanistan, or some other developing country, someone can run you over as you cross the street, and you have no recourse as a pedestrian because you were in their way. Streets are for cars in those countries, and pedestrians get to suck eggs so to speak. Fairness wins in that scenario (I know, it doesn’t seem fair - at least not to us) and true justice takes a back seat. Over here, the game is different, and if anyone is standing near your bus you’d better not move it or you can *depend* on all the demonic realms of Satan will be unleashed. If you’re on a pension, that means you’ll be retiring early. If you’re on a 401k, that means you’d better be dusting off that resume because after the investigation is over, you won’t have a job… and don’t even think about applying for another transit job.

I can respect what that driver did but it was unacceptable and completely unsafe. However I do get vocal when people jump in front of the person in a wheelchair.

I am a driver for Portland Oregon. Yes people do push elderly people out of the way to get on the bus. 90% of the time it is a fare evader trying to sneak by. It Pisses me off every time It happens at least once a month here, mostly by young adults or teenagers.

Training - Don't back up unless you absolutely have to, and if you do get a spotter. Drive para - backs up constantly depending on the customers pick up or drop off location. Best was a video where a driver tried turning a 40' down a street and scraped a power pole, then in his infinite wisdom, tries backing up and scraped the heck out of the bus on the same pole in reverse.

My thoughts on what that bus driver did as if I was the driver I would have said the elderly lady gets on first before rest of you. If passengers weren’t happy with what I said I’m sorry mate I wouldn’t have let them on apart from elderly lady who I 💯 % would let on my bus 🚌 mate. 👍

I backed up plenty of buses including, school bus, transit, and articulated buses but in emergency situations however, this skit is absurd. Its presenting a hazardous situation in many ways. Passengers are too close to the bus which they do in reality. People commonly walk to a moving bus as you're approaching the transit stop where you could hit them. In this skit, a real situation like this can make passengers aggressive if you refuse to let them on the bus. They may stand in front of your bus, maybe hit the windshield, glass, mirrors, or any other part of the bus. Or one of thier body parts could get caught under the wheel and they will fire you. Don't back up like this unless you necessarily need to and i dont mean by this example at all. I agree it was wrong to push the elderly woman like that but this is even more wrong.

I feel that two wrongs don't make right. Of the way that driver maneuver that bus, someone could get hurt or get killed and the driver could face displinary action 😢 people should be patient and to be respectful to elderly and the disabled as they get on or off the 🚌 bus.

In addition to all those safety concerns (including motion sickness as someone else said), it's a waste of fuel, a waste of time, a delay for the bus (assuming on time), a waste of wear and tear, and bad publicity for the company/agency that often times local tax dollars are paying for. Sidenote: If we want to encourage folks to use public transit instead of their cars, this is not a good way to do it.

When I was younger and before I started to have to use a powerchair I remembered being a spotter. I am legally blind from birth but in Utah where I live I have been a spotter. A bus driver has to have someone spot for them and the driver will have you stand in an area where the driver can see you but have you wave them back to the area the driver asks you to guide them. I'm a passenger, not a driver or employee.

I hate when I’m getting off the bus at the terminal and I can clearly hear the driver say bored from the other door. Or wait while I help this person in a wheelchair ( they just say I need to take this wheelchair off but I don’t say anything) and they are close enough where they can hear the bus driver but they don’t listen. Then I have to wait for the people to get on then let the driver unhook my chair. Then I can get off

I am a light rail operator up here in the Twin Cities and I had people that would hold the door when I'm trying to close them and seen teens getting high on the light rail trains.

Thats definitely not ok for the driver to do.

Once on memorial day, I was onokd nice bus n20 bus and transdev driver had end up on close stret at Northern Blvd/Great Neck Rd due to street parade, bus driver had to backup to make upturn to go to Long Island Expressway to get to Northern Blvd in Queens.

Cen Cali operator. Only way for us to do it. Under supervisor directions, w a spotter from our district. Or if specified on route. (We have a route where a 3 point is necessary but is by an open filed w no traffic). Otherwise we will be terminated.

It's not ok to go back and fourth when driving a bus, going back and fourth can be very dangerous to passengers, people wanting to get on the bus and also can cause an accident if cars were behind the bus.

I saw a drive back inside a transit center because they almost hit a pole.

Plus it's a waste of diesel

I've actually been on a bus that had to reverve twice (incidentally, the same route both times, but over a decade apart) The first time, I rode the bus to school, and we had a new operator that day, she missed a turn, so I told her, so she pulled into a McDonald's, backed it up, and turned around. This was on an old high floor bus before there was a million cameras all over the place. The second time like 14 years later, there was a giant water main break early in the morning, and the streets flooded for several blocks, creating a sinkhole that they finally fully closed three months later. When I got home from work later in the day, I decided to go to the store and didn't feel like driving, so I caught the bus, the street was closed to thru traffic, and the operator still turned on the street. As she proceeded we got to the closed portion and had to wait like 40 minutes for someone to allow us to back out.
