I have made lots of rag quilts n I have realized a few things that I want to pass along. I have made more baby ones than adult ones, but here’s what I have found out the hard way. If your blocks are 7” or smaller then this next step is not necessary, but if the blocks are 8” to 12” then not only should you sew the diagonal seams but also across horizontally n vertically thru the center of the blocks. That ensures no “wadding up” of batting if you are using batting. This extra step does take more time, but the quilt will be so much smoother n secure. Also to help prevent the outer edges of the quilt from coming apart, I go around twice about 1/8” apart

Great tips, Ellen! Until a quilter has made a rag quilt it's hard to understand just how much can go wrong. But we persevere, figure it out, and continue to enjoy them! Switching from batting to flannel as my middle layer has saved me so much time. While I really appreciate the 'loft' of the batting I find the flannel so much easier to work with. I certainly don't miss cutting all those batting squares, either. Sure appreciate your input. Thanks for watching. Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

After I make an x in the middle and around the square, I clip the edges and then I sew it all together. For me it makes it easier and I don't cut through the sewn line around the square.

I finished my first rag quilt and it was fun to make. I also make a few mistakes I had to unpick and re-sew mostly because it's so ingrained in me to sew right side to right side but in a rag quilt you basically sew backside to backside or... "wrong" side to "wrong" side. Even though it was my first rag quilt it came out so great! I did it with the "traditional cotton fabric front, batting and flannel on the back but might try the 3 layers of flannel since flannel is on sale at Joann's lol The baby quilts are so cute.

That's where I bought my flannel, too! Gotta' love a good sale. 😊 So glad you enjoyed making your first rag quilt! Despite all that I've made, I still sew a block or two the wrong way. You're right that we are so accustomed to right sides together, it's hard to change. But so worth the effort! Thanks so much for watching! Enjoy all those rag quilts you be making. 😂😂”cut seam” “hot potato” last video I watched… I just love watching you. As I am learning quilting techniques I have made so many mistakes but learn from them . The first rag quilt I made I was overzealous & decided to use flannel for my front & “ minky “ for the back of the squares. Not paying attention to the nap of the minky I had a mess. Trying to be a perfectionist I had to take a whole bunch of squares apart & start again. 😵‍💫 Lesson learned. 😂 I’ve not used minky again. Use same fabric for front and back… You are such a good teacher. Enjoy your videos so much . Thank you !

Learning the hard way is never easy, Brenda! BUT, sometimes those are the best lessons. I love touching minky but no way I'll quilt with it!! 🤣🤣🤣 Thank you so much for your sense of humor and for following along. It's great to have you! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

Thanks for all the tips and tricks when sewing rag quilts. I always love these in your tutorials. They are really helpful!! However, in this video, the link for the snips takes me to the pre-wound bobbins so there are 2 links to the bobbins and no link to the snipes. Would you please provide the link to the snips? I can’t imagine how sore my hands would be after clipping a rag quilt without these spring loaded snips!! Thanks!!

Your rags quilts are beautiful. I have only made one rag quilt. After I finished that quilt, I could not make myself like it. It was always shedding every time I moved it. After a year, I took it apart and re-cut the fabric (and used the pieces in three different quilts with no raw edges showing).
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise 16 дней назад
Oh no, Arvetta! Mine have all been washed multiple times and I think that's eliminated the shedding. I can't imagine taking apart a rag quilt! You win the prize for that one!! Thanks a lot for following along! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

Wish there was a cheat sheet for yardage

@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise 15 дней назад
Actually there is a new Cheat Sheet/Pattern. It'll officially be announced on Tues but you can access it here: inspired-quilting-by-lea-louise.ck.page/products/rag-quilt-cutting-yardag?promo=INTRO%20HALF It's currently half price. It has 25 different quilt sizes using various size blocks. Plus there's a yardage conversion chart so you know how much fabric to buy. I've been working on it and it's finally finished! Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

I see strawberry lemonade !! Love the idea of using Flannel in the Middle. I find that using batting makes the quilt to bulky and heavy for a baby.🐣🍼 Cold enough in ga lol. I hate winding bobbins😥

Me, too, Neva! I love that fabric!! Yes, no more batting in rag quilts any more. The flannel is so much easier and faster! Glad to have you following along. Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

So you are saying that we need to sew 6 fabrics together ? Am I seeing this correctly ?
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise 16 дней назад
Yes, and it's easier than you think, Jeni. The traditional batting layer is replaced with a layer of flannel, so each strip has three layers to sew. It works great and I've made lots of rag quilts this way! Sure appreciate you watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

There's a lot going on with this quilt, Jeni! Check out the link below. It's a similar rag quilt without the narrow strips. It may be easier to see how it goes together. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-G0hAYw_CdjU.html Let me know if you have any more questions! Thanks for watching.
