In the island of Tinos, Greece, dovecotes are a unique and fascinating architectural feature that can be found scattered throughout the island. These traditional structures, known as "peristerones" in Greek, are typically cylindrical or square buildings with a domed roof and small openings for the birds to enter and exit. Dovecotes in Tinos are often built with local stone and have decorative elements such as geometric patterns, arches, and small windows. They were historically used to house pigeons for their eggs, meat, and fertilizer, as well as for their symbolic value in Greek culture. Many of the dovecotes in Tinos date back to the 18th and 19th centuries and are considered important cultural heritage sites. Some of the most well-preserved examples can be found in the villages of Tarambados, Loutra, and Falatados. Today, these dovecotes serve as a reminder of Tinos' agricultural past and are a popular tourist attraction for those interested in traditional Greek architecture and history.

A friendly advice ,1*dont you ever walk ,especially on these paths, wearing sandals .. tinos mountains are full of vipers 2*you must visit Pyrgos village, one of the most Beautyful villages in the Cyclades, if you get there early ask where the old bakery is and taste the AMAZING hand made cheese pies they have 3*eat your diner in the tavernas of the small villages ,usually they have their own meat and vegetable production ,so you can rediscover how real food tastes..

There was a blue door with a poem written on it on your way to the Volax museum. The poem: Quote Titos - Patrikios (probably the poets name) Paris 1968 THE MOUNTAINS First there was the sea. I was born amongst islands an island myself, temporarily formed/emerged just in time to see some light and then resink The maountains came later I chose them (the mountains) I somehow had to share the burdain that has been weighing down on this place for ages Uquote

From Wikipedia: Greece Traditional peristeronas in Tinos, Greece Dovecotes in Greece are known as Περιστεριώνες, Peristeriones (plural). Such structures are very popular in the Cycladic islands and in particular Tinos, which has 1300 dovecotes.[14] The systematic breeding of doves and pigeons as sources of meat and fertilizer was introduced by the Venetians[15][16] in the 15th century. Dovecotes are built in slopes protected by the prevailing north wind and oriented so that their facade is towards an open space. It's how Greeks collect guano, which makes for their wonderful tomatoes and other veg and fruits.

Hi Gabriel! Legends and myths accompany the moon-like landscape of Volax and the famous round granite rocks. It is said that it they are the remnants of a mythical battle between gods and giants, that the volakes (large cannonballs) took their shape from the sea that at some point surrounded the area, or that they came from a meteor shower. According to geologists, they are granite rocks that were formed 15-25 million years ago and with the changes in temperature, in humidity, as well as the friction caused by the wind, they eroded and developed a spherical shape.

Have followed you for some years and love Greece like you do. With eleven visits however I think it is time for some language lessons. Although it is a bit old, the 'Greek by radio' course can be found for free online. You could benefit from hearing the more advanced lessons (maybe starting from 50 or so, but you can decide by yourself). It works a bit like Pimsleur, it has a dialogue and then it's broken into pieces and new structures and vocabulary are explained gradually in English and you're prompted to repeat. Load it onto one of your devices and listen to it instead of music while you are driving when you are not filming. I learned spanish the same way. Kepp up what you are doing.

Gabe - So, since you've now hit 50 Greek islands, here's my question: Based upon where you've been, one year from now, you are to spend 6 months straight on one of them in the same house/apartment/accommodation; i.e. live on the island rather than merely visit. At the present time: what are the three islands or so that would be the finalists for your choice? Feel free to apply any decision criteria that suits you. Thanks as always for your time and efforts.

The last two Islands may be the reason for the bird coops at one time it may have been the only way to get fertilizer for their crops now everything is easily shipped in. There were some pretty crazy winter storms some days, heavy rain and snow so I made a donation at one of the remote churches and warmed myself by a candle for a couple hours. Another night I slept inside one of them! Wasn't certain how the locals would feel about that so I left very early, but I figured Jesus wouldn't mind 😅
