For me, it's not the government to blame... it's the person itself why that person remains poor. The government by law has offered monthly cash benefits to those families living in poverty but what happened after receiving the money? They put it into illegal gambling, buy liquor, and don't even think about their children the parents are irresponsible. Even if the government social workers teach the family to change their way of living still they keep coming back to that place, their mindset is different. Our country is rich in nature when you throw a seed into the ground that seed will just sprout and grow and produce fruits and vegetables. In this, there's no reason for you to live in poverty... If you are lazy you'll live in poverty, If you are a hard-working person you'll reap what you sow.

The vast majority of Filipinos are humble and good people who love their families and despite not having much money, they are happy and try hard to progress without treating other people badly. I hope that the country of the Philippines progresses a lot in the near future.

Thank you for another insightful and revealing documentary uncovering daily life in a Philippines slum. Always heart-warming to witness the happy, friendly and welcoming squatters living amidst such dirt, filth and squalor in the Philippines slums. It was my inspiration to create Drew's Travels, documenting the lives of these less fortunate yet heart-warming communities, thriving in this diverse and beautiful country that is the Philippines.

I lived in the Philippines in the 1970's and while there was poverty and trash it was not nearly as bad as now and that is because of plastics. The trash that consisted of paper, wood and bamboo was either burned or quickly degraded back into the environment. Every bit of plastic debris just lays there for years and years and never goes away.
@NewHampshireJack
@NewHampshireJack Год назад
I have to agree with you. The invention of plastics in some ways became a curse for the world. Great for wrapping food, cover the leftovers and no more need to go to a store with your own jug (bottle) to bring your purchases home. Many types are recyclable but someone has to make the effort. Do we need to take a step backward to go forward?
@andrewparrott7260

@@NewHampshireJack exactly, I agree with you whole heartly. I also grew up in Australia in the 1970's and back then everything came in tins, aluminium cans, glass jars, cardboard or paper packaging that's it. All recyclable items in today's standards. It was the bloody petro chemical companies that changed the whole industry in telling us that plastic was good for us in how we lived our lives. Now look what's happening to the environment that we live in, we've turned it into a toxic wasteland. A crying arse shame. 🤔😖🤦‍♂️😡😡

I understand the poverty issue. I've been many other countries where poverty is the norm in many rural areas. I don't understand why throw garbage outside your own home or in the water. Maybe it's lack of education. Don't know but it's something I've not seen in other places. It's almost like they have absolutely no respect for themselves or family. I do not feel sorry for them but I do feel sorry for the situation.

There is no system to remove waste here at the moment. The waste isn't only from the homes but it washes up from the ocean from where China and Korea dumps its waste. This is also still aftermath from seasonal bagyong also. Waste system is left to local barangay, but many cannot afford to pay the taxes on the systems created so they just stop running from lack of fundings. You can go down a KM to Cavite city and it is fairly clean.

You know, I've been hooked on watching building videos lately, and watched people build literal mansions alone or with very little help. I can't help but think that these people could do a lot to improve the conditions around them. Even just picking up garbage and placing it at a designated location would help a lot. And with so many people around, making great improvements would be quick if they just put in some work.

In the early 1900's several tribes in the Philippines were driven from their lands and the land was given or sold cheap to make fruit plantations. Today a lots of these tribes descendants are still with out land and living as squatters. Most squatter villages have no land for gardens or fruit producing trees. Taking their lands were like cutting out their hearts.

Yes, this is hard to believe. Even if you are poor, you can clean up where you live. It doesn't cost you any money, just a little effort. And it contributes to a healthier environment and ultimately to your health.

Dear JOHN WALK TOUR, maybe you can think about doing a project cleaning the plastic bottles with the people (maybe you can do this project together with some other RU-vidrs from the Philippines). One idea would be to make a kind of "cleaning garbage lottery" for those who help to clean up. And the winners will get something nice. What do you think about it?

They should work together and clean the place up instead of sitting around. One thing is poverty, nasty is another. I thought they recycled plastics. Don’t they have garbage disposal

It’s sad that poverty caused these people to live in squalor and filth. Poverty in the Philippines has deep rooted causes. The Spanish occupation brought religion to subjugate the masses and taught people to accept suffering. In more recent times, runaway over- population has been the main cause of poverty in the country. When I was in college in the 70’s and 80’s, the country’s population was 47 million, now, it has almost tripled. The country’s resources can not possibly support such huge numbers of lives to elevate to decent levels. One can not blame the government. Population control programs were blocked by the Catholic church, is it any wonder there’s so much poverty in the country?

My girlfriend is Filipino. Born raised and until recently has never left the country. She works two full-time jobs and sews dresses on the side. There is no possibility of her being able to afford rent. I live in California. 100% American. I'm pulling 16 hour shifts 6 days a week and there's no possibility of me affording rent. For me it is the government to blame. Or to be precise the Democratic Party.

@jeffrapp7278 signatures is how I know. All voting tallies are considered public information. You can find out exactly who put together the bill or regulation. Who was pushing it and who voted for it. For example, the separation of children from illegal migrants. Everybody blamed Trump but when you go to the White House archives you will see that it has Bill Clinton's signature on it. The cages for children has Obama's signature on it. There's not a single Republican signature anywhere to be seen.

Yes indeed Gol. D. Roger I know exactly what you reply here in this column. I strongly agree with you on this matter. Plenty in today’s world 🌎 🌍 either haven’t encountered or faced extreme poverty in their life while growing up in their respective countries which are far better than majority of the 3rd world countries. Even in South Africa 🇿🇦 American 🇺🇸 and London England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 there are still plenty of homeless people and poor people living all over the big cities 🌆 streets. Seeing is believing.

Don’t wait for the government to help you, help yourself instead. Move and look for a job. That will be your first step, if not you and your children will get stuck in that situations forever. You’re not going to uplift your life if you just stay in that area. Don’t be afraid to gamble, be strong in your quest for a better life. You will have some obstacles to cross but don’t let that stop you for trying to improve your life. Keep on trying and don’t get disappointed. I knew that for a fact because we are so poor and live in the remote barrio in La Union with no opportunity in sight though my father was a Policeman in Baguio. My parents decided to get out from the barrio and move to a more prosperous place in Pangasinan, little by little we were able to make it. We their children all got a college degrees and now all retired in California. Help yourself and always bring God with you, whatever you do. Pray.

With the narrow walk way plus at times over or near water both my fears kicked in: water and heights. If I saw a spider, that would have been a trifecta and I would not have been able to move! The condition of these people is very sad yet they continue to populate and keep the poverty generational. The men sitting around doing nothing sucking up precious oxygen. Sad.

Surely some of the people could at least try to get a few neighbors together and make an attempt to get rid of some of this mess. I see a lot of people sitting and standing around doing nothing. Before I visited the Philippines twice, I held the same opinion as you. But now to some degree, I understand why they just leave those rubbish there. It is the poverty, you know people living in that slum are struggling for their life every day, which almost consumes all their energy. It is not fair to attribute the unendurable environment to these people in poor.

Where do you want them to take it? It's clear the systems we have here are non-existent over there due to government issue. Do they pick it up and drop it off to some other poor neighborhood? There's nothing they can really do. I also read in the comments that this trash isn't just from them but from the ocean as well that ends up in their area. Maybe try to educate yourself instead of being an Ignorant foreigner like most Americans.

I believe that the Filipino education system is pretty good. It is the mindset present where there are the working class and the rich upper class that hurts so many there. I believe it started during the original Spanish colonel rule, and really has not changed since. There are outliers to the system (like Manny Pacquiao who escaped poverty.) but most of the very poor in the Philippines have very few options to get move up in society. For example, a lot of fast food places in major cities in the Phillippines only hire college graduates, a job relegated to young teens in the West.
