I always find these star crossed lovers stories so sad. I loved this series but it broke my heart.

I so wanted them to end up together but when you found out their back story’s you know it’s not going to be a happy ending. So sad, especially how the beauty of Cornelia was slowly being destroyed by a horrendous disease.

Well, Eli had the opportunity to make a difference in the very beginning, but chose to be indifferent (Dante said the center of hell is reserved for the indifferent), and it comes back to haunt him. The choices of his past come back to haunt him and the repercussions come back. At its core this is a tragedy of unrequited love that at its core was pure, however fleeting.

So true! And those of us who’ve seen it are holding it close and carrying it with us.

Becoming obsessed with it

Yes - we’ve had lots of exchanges about this on another thread. Would have loved them to stay together but I can see from a storytelling perspective why their story needed to be rounded off rather than just having them ride off into the sunset together. At least this way they were both still alive at the end and Eli had Cornelia’s seeds and she had his ‘home’. We knew from the outset that they were no longer together because Cornelia was clearly remembering a long ago time with Eli so I was just massively relieved he was still alive at the end.

My favorite scene

Yes, I think Eli thought that America was too dangerous for Cornelia and that he couldn't look after her the way she needed, because of her illness, and that it was best for her to go home where she would be a lot safer and maybe could have better treatment (we know she lives at least another 13 years in England). He had already lost his entire family and most of his tribe to illness or violence and perhaps at some level couldn't face going through that again - especially not illness since there was nothing at all he could do to fix that. Although Eli and Cornelia survived a range of encounters, it was made very clear that characters could meet a violent end at any time (Cornelia and Eli had various discussions about how "it's just a whole lot of aiming and then one day you miss"). And her illness was causing increasing problems with the way that they were travelling and living. In addition, the sheriff made clear that they had to separate to prevent Eli being hanged for killing David Melmont. I suppose that was because Eli could travel faster alone and also it was Cornelia who arrived in town looking for Melmont, not Eli himself, so it was only through Cornelia that Eli could be connected with killing Melmont. We knew from the outset that Cornelia and Eli were no longer together and that Cornelia was remembering long-ago memories of Eli so I was just hugely relieved that Eli was still alive at the end. Much as I would have loved them to stay together, I think their story did need to be wrapped up properly rather than just have them riding off into the sunset - that would have meant their story just kind of petering out. I think Hugo Blick did really well to create a story-line that allowed both characters to remain alive, but required them to separate in a way which did not throw their love for each other into doubt. I like to think Eli found a patch of land safely and grew a garden from Cornelia's seeds.

I found this series "The English" terrific, such a beautiful but dramatic love story, the most wonderful and talented actors, Emily with darker colored hair, even more beautiful as usual, in her role as Cornelia. As to Chaske : absolutely remarkable and so good looking as Eli ! 😍 Greetings from Belgium.

Se encontraron en mitad del camino. Eso es lo que hace a una historia de amor especial, estoy tan cansada de historias donde chico conoce a chica en un puñetero bar. Es tan predecible...en cambio Eli & Cornelia se conocieron en medio del duro camino de la vida, con ambos siendo hermanados por un pasado realmente duro y traumático, habiendo perdido a toda su familia, por eso él hubiera podido entregarse a ella, y estaba esperando hacerlo, pero ella jamás hubiera podido, no después de todo lo que soportó. Por eso es una historia que ha calado tan hondo en nosotras, porque es una historia real, y es una historia dolorosa, es un amor auténtico, lleno de respeto y una pasión que no puede realizarse.
