Getting a driver's license is a rite of passage for teenagers, but it also marks the start of their most dangerous years on the road. Teen drivers have much higher crash rates than adults. Fortunately, there are ways parents can help to reduce the risks. This video highlights the stories of three teens whose lives ended too soon and examines common factors such as inexperience, immaturity, and speeding that lead to many crashes involving young, novice drivers.
Teens interviewed speak frankly about their driving habits. They recount crashes and near misses. They describe minding their manners when grown-ups are along for the ride but relaxing the rules when they're with friends.
Institute experts provide insight into the crucial role parents play by enforcing their state's graduated licensing laws, establishing their own rules, and providing plenty of supervised time behind the wheel.

Seeing this I am even more appreciative that my dad took my driving lessons with him seriously. He would always remind me to look in my side and rear view mirrors, look ahead for cars coming out of driveways and pedestrians on the sidewalk as they could suddenly jwalk. It’s such a shame that so many teens are reckless and are blind to the potential risks of driving.

It’s not funny! When I was barely 18, as an inexperienced driver, a situation came up that I couldn’t handle, I over corrected. The truck I was driving rolled. My baby daughter, Tammy, 10 months old, DIED. There were no safety devices back then ei seatbelts and safety baby car seats. Everything safety wise is available to you now and your parents, all your childhood, made sure you were buckled in! Honour them and keep doing it! I am old now and I know for a fact that you pay the price in your mind for the rest of your life. You carry that with you like a heavy backpack forever. Just a terrible terrible situation to be involved in, when someone dies or is handicapped in some way for life. Plus so many people suffer the horrendous loss: parents,grandparents, extended family and on and on. Please be smart.

As a 17 year old, who drives, I hate those type of people who carelessly drive. Many of my friens try to distract me as I drive so I tend to not go with them. I find all people around me are very reckless and immature so no wonder they cant be trusted with driving. Maybe I am too mature for my age, but teens should NOT be allowed to drive.

I do feel empathy for all parents who have lost a child. I am one of the lucky ones who made a clear example of my eldest child who was speeding in a residential area and crashed into 3 other vehicles. This was after he attended an advanced driving course that emphasises on speeding and the consciousnesses. My younger children learnt from his mistakes and I thank god, 20 year on and they are all very good drivers now. Here in AU, 18 yr olds can get their licenses, only after 2 years and 120 hours of driving experience. They are on red probationary plates for the first year, this means zero blood alcohol and drug levels, only one passenger 18-22 years old, no phone and hands free phone and no towing. Green P for the next 2 years and again no alcohol or drug levels. Even with these restrictions they account for highest fatal road fatalities.

For future commenters they are 1: teens are four times more likely than adults to be an accident. 2: this is exacerbated at night/9 PM and when driving with friends. 3: The primary reason for this is due to their attitude 4: this can be rectified by going to a specialized school (use the one remaining answer that makes sense) Don’t be an idiot like these kids just cause I’m giving you the answers because the videos 20 minutes long but you’ll only need to watch the first two minutes to get the answers The rest is just trying to scare you.

Great video; trying to slowly teach my wife who grew up in an area where woman rarely drive and mass transit more utilized as well as a relative that is a functional disabled adult but had not driven for many years. Everyone’s learning ability is different but technology has only added to every ones distractions. I grew up in a time of less limits (and yes perhaps unfair); but risks in my time and surroundings were limited. I began driving at 8 but only on private rural land and those lessons were short but taught me to be scared frankly. I am not advocating teaching people that young to drive
@johnnyeckhoff7137

but just like gun safety in schools or pregnancy we use to listen and be fearful and had more time to understand the consequences. I don’t have all the answers, and again I was a quick learner, but not all are in understanding consequences or just applied abilities; do believe that we can do more to train longer and in safer conditions but in some situations setting limits is key; teaching maintenance or how to fix; riding or pushing a lawn mower or other small engine machines can be a powerful lesson in teaching use, maintenance, and therefore respect and responsibility for equipment. Perhaps I will receive hate messages with these thoughts ( as all too often these days); but I truly believe we can do a better job in training young adults or people of any age by slowly grooming them into driving and responsibility even by age 16 (when yes typically we are less rational at that age). We just sometimes need to be scared into limits and responsibility over the course of a longer time period to fully accept. Frankly 6 months and or 10 (even 50) hours is just not going to cut it most times in preparation behind the wheel. P.S. if you are young attempt to obtain a CDL license; it will open doors even if you never use but will help you quantify the difference between good and bad driving just in learning and obtaining
@magnificentmuttley154

You said you began driving on farmland at 8. My dad didnt own land, but when I was 8 he used to take me out to the pasture & put me behind the wheel. The drivers seat was moved all the way forward, & I had to reach the pedals with my toes. I was allowed to drive automatic transmission with the gear selector in "2." I didnt do more than 30 mph By the time I was 12 Dad allowed me to drive in a river lowland. Plenty of open space. I still didnt feel safe driving above 30 mph. Maintaining a mental sense of the space Dad's truck occupied on the road & its placement was enough to keep my brain very busy. I wasnt afraid of driving a truck at 8. But at 12 I was scared, even with Dad right there in the passenger seat Anyway, this is why many of us had parents who began teaching us to drive early on. Plus we had things like trail bikes, go carts, & motorcycles. It wouldve been inthinkable to our Boomer parents to wait until we were 15 or 16 to begin teaching us to drive. But as GenY (Millennials) began reaching driving age in the mid 90's, I began to see this trend of waiting until the last minute before putting a 'teen behind the wheel for the first time, & that trend has continued to get worse. Other than typical tendencies to drive too fast, follow to close, & having a carefree attitude toward safety, I am convinced that parents not giving their driving age children any prior experience before 15 & 16 is why they have bad driving habits, & lack a sense of danger while driving

Its not about inteligence, trust me, I bet there are people in this world way but way more inteligent (im refering to iq) than you that take stupid decisions that you wont. Its about risk manangment in some phases of your life, you can take more risks because of some random factor, and you can even know its stupid to take the risk but you still do it because of something. We are not robots to be just affected by logical computing power. Smart people can also not resist to eat a piece of cake while on diet even if they know its against that specific goal. Your brain "most rational part" is not always decently working, when you are highly streesed you tend to turn off that part, so all the inteligence goes away, I mean you can have 300 iq points but you wont be able to use them, of course that having high iq can prevent you to put your brain in that positions. Bill gates while young was caught driving without a licence and he probabily has high iq. Your comment shows a bit that you might havr a bit of lack of understanding of these or ignoring this variables, as some high inteligent people ignore some risks or risky variables.

I got my permit 2 days after I just turned 19. I’m now 24 still have my permit I’m in no rush to get my full license and I’m not ashamed to still have my permit I feel more safe if I’m with my parents. Supervised driving and getting more better over the years for me helps me and keeps me safer. Teens shouldn’t be in any rush to get their license. Teens now can get school only permits where they can only drive to and from school parents and teens should only start with that. A Teen school permit only has the teen in the car no passengers and is safer. When I was in highschool and saw the kids driving they were leadfooting and distracted and most of the time on their phone or have friends in the car distracting them. I’m only 24 but I still can relate to this vid not with driving but with seeing the kids in my school and how cocky they drove is still dangerous. Don’t rush and you can still get your license any time keep a permit for as long as your state slows. There’s no reason to feel bad for having a permit still it’s your safety and others that matter more. This video may be old but it still should be shown to our new teen drivers

i learned at a better pace . I had a thing for cars from when i was 5 year old . Around 11 or 12 years old i started watching car accident videos. At that time i learned the generel rules of driving which are followed by experienced drivers . Around when i was 13 year old i started to sit on the driver seat of the car with the car being parked i just thought that i am driving and perform the manuvers and get some experience . Around when i was 15 years old then i started starting the car moving it back and forth , removing from parking spot and then parking it again (my house was at closed road on dead end ) . And then when i turned 16 i just automatically started to drive without any problem . My general rules were always wear a seatbelt , if you want to use a phone just pull over , don't ride beyond your, roads and car's capabilities.

I grew up in Germany. You have to be 18 to get your license. I was 20 or 21 when I got my first car, when I had a job, I could afford one. I don't think any 16-year-old working a typical high school student job makes that kind of money to afford a car including insurance, gas etc... unless big daddy or mommy pays for it.

Teenagers think nothing can happen to them. They think they know everything and they can't be told anything. Look at the interviewed kids in this video. Laughing and joking about speeding, sliding on water, almost hitting pedestrians, blasting music, reckless driving. They think only of themselves, not what they may inflict upon innocent drivers.
@PersistentMeow
@PersistentMeow Год назад
They were interviewed, there were probably incentives involved, maybe even scripts. Also they all looked wayyyyyyy too old to be in the age group which the video discusses. All I'm saying is thet they were probably given something to say it like that to drive home their point. I agree with the overall message, my best friend was killed in a car accident when I was a young child. I agree that safety is of the utmost importance, but I think that those people who were interviewed in the video are just saying that for the sake of the video and no one is actually like that in real life.

@American-Jello

@@PersistentMeow I take it you haven't seen the recent video of the woman who was arrested for DUI that killed 2 people and all she cared about was getting her car back so she could go to class the next day. No remorse, none. This is not uncommon these days. The officer repeatedly told her she murdered 2 people, she was under arrest, her car was a crime scene, she was not going to class the next day, and her response to that was "well, then, what about my Tuesday class, I have a class Tuesday." You should look up that video. The lack of empathy is a real wake up call.

Basically was first a leased car that my mom got in 2018 and then in late 2019 like in late November. We got rid of my dads black 2010 Ford Escape which my parents joked about my first car going to be that. But then we replaced the car with a pacific blue 2020 Chevy equinox And my mom took the equinox and my dad took the C-Max. Also what I meant by fixed was because my mom scratched the side of the car from a cement poll. And this was when she had it

I know no one is going to agree with me, but the minimum driving age should be 18 years old. If a teen gets a ticket, the teen should have to pay for it. If they get a dui or reckless driving ticket, the parent should suspend their license for a year.

50000 killed in last decade WOW. In my home country, there were 720 dead young drivers in the last decade. If the population was the same as USA, it would come to 2880 killed. What a difference 50000 to 2880. In my home country, we have mandatory, professional driving school (driving) + 28 hours of mandatory classroom studies. On top, a very strict 2 year probation period. The results of all this are in the numbers.
