This was incredibly kind of you, Steve! Thank you so much. I largely created a channel because of your frequent encouragement in your videos, and I have found this community to be as wonderful and welcoming as you say. Thank you again for all that you do in this community! By the way, I’m guessing Virginia Woolf and Samuel Johnson for two of the greatest critics, but I don’t know who the other woman would be.

A young(ish) man here. I started a BookTube channel after seeing your ‘Video Response the Dark Side of BookTube!’ video from a few months back where you said (among other valuable pieces of advice) if someone was thinking about starting a channel then they should at least give it a go. At that point I’d been thinking about starting a channel for several months. Unfortunately, I realized very quickly that ‘Booktubing’ wasn’t for me. I’d even recorded a BookTube ‘newbie tag’ video, which I decided not to publish in the end. It just wasn’t working for me. I hated appearing on camera, hated my voice, found my attempt at doing a structured review too stilted and po-faced, and found my unstructured videos to be a lot of embarrassing waffle. I’d tried to think of creative ways I could get around these stumbling blocks, but in the end, I found the process of making videos took up too much of my already limited free time, which I needed for other hobbies (music, writing and of course reading.) I was definitely much happier returning to being a watcher of booktube videos, rather than an active participant, so these recommendations are great! 😊 I’ve already subscribed to Joshua and Zeke’s channels. It’s always great finding new channels to follow and then spending a few idle hours watching their past videos, and even better watching a new channel gain traction and become huge over time (I think I started watching Grammaticus Books when he only had five videos uploaded - now he has one of the biggest channels on BookTube!)

I keep reading Murakami, and I'm not sure why. I never get a ton of enjoyment out of his novels. They're odd, yes. But to what end? I keep thinking maybe it's just because I can't read him in Japanese that I can't understand the works better, but maybe it's just that the stories and characters are really not that good? I don't know. I think I need to move on from him. There are too many other intriguing writers out there that probably deserve my time and attention.
@saintdonoghue
@saintdonoghue 20 дней назад
Right, exactly: you keep asking, To what end? And it seems to me the only reason that question would come up is if the reader fundamentally doubts that the author in question is sincere. If you're reading an author who really cares about what they're writing - even if it's an author you don't like - you'll never ask, To what end? Why am I reading this?

The ratio of female to male viewers of RU-vid was a big surprise to me.
@mtngrl5859
@mtngrl5859 21 день назад
If you follow Book Tube not You Tube, there are far more female channels than male. Even on Steve's channel, over 50% of the comment section is from women. There are some channels that have a narrow focus that may appeal to more male viewers, but that is due to its niche nature. For example, I like books on Ancient History which seems to draw more male content creators.

@mtngrl5859
@mtngrl5859 21 день назад
Since you are male, do you really think that is strange? Do you perceive yourself to be without bias?
@pattube
@pattube 21 день назад
I don't see how it's necessarily "bias" if a male prefers male RU-vidrs, or if a female prefers female RU-vidrs. Many people of a particular gender don't necessarily prefer the content of their own gender. In fact, I would expect most people prefer content based on the content, regardless of gender. At most, gender might be a secondary factor, but it seems to me content is the primary factor in most cases for most people regardless of gender. And if anything, if there is bias in social media platforms like RU-vid, then the bias of a (cis) male viewer might be towards a pretty female face even if her content is subpar, not toward a male RU-vidr. Anyway, so I don't see how it's necessarily the case that a male viewer is biased to prefer male RU-vidrs purely due to being male. That claim itself sounds like it could be a "biased" (sexist?) claim.
@mtngrl5859
@mtngrl5859 21 день назад
@@pattube My point is that you were able to identify that your favorite channels were men, so that means you are aware of their gender with respect to their channel. In my case, I don't quantify "my favorite channels being male". To me, they are all individuals that I enjoy their content. So, by being aware and labeling them as your "favorite being all male" that clearly shows a bias. I like Michael K Vaughn, but many of the books he likes, I wouldn't bother reading but he offers good insight. So, if you followed Jane Austen July, nearly all of the hosts are females, that couldn't have escaped your attention. Similar with Vic-October again predominantly hosted by women. It's possible that you aren't interested in literature from this era, but they do feature prominently on Steve's channel as well.
@frankmerlino336
@frankmerlino336 21 день назад
@pattube "bias" is not a term that is inherently derogatory. Everyone has bias, the consequences of said bias can be worthy of criticism but in and of itself is not necessarily bad
@pattube
@pattube 21 день назад
@@mtngrl5859 1. So first, just for clarity's sake, I'm not the original person you replied to. Perhaps you already know this, but I'm just clarifying just in case don't. 2. More to the point, if your criticism is simply "identifying" someone's gender, then that's not "bias". That's just being observant. I don't have any concerns with anyone making observations about other people. That's perfectly normal and expected. 3. My main concern was that you alleged "bias" toward another person on basis of him being male and stating he prefers male RU-vidrs. But as I said, he could prefer male RU-vidrs for other reasons unrelated to gender or at least not primarily related to gender. Indeed, as I said, it's more likely he prefers male RU-vidrs not because they're male (which as you say would be bias) but simply because they tend to produce content he prefers.
