What do you think of Rishi Sunak’s national service pledge?

National Service was abolished in the UK in 1960 because the generals told the government, "We don't want people here that don't want to be here."

Not all old people agree with this at seventy seven,I personally think it is despicable, they are dictators ,young people use your vote and get them out .

It’s absolutely ridiculous kids want opportunities and decent paid jobs, access to higher education. Not getting their limbs blown up in the oil wars.

Last Wednesday, the Tory Defence Minister told Parliament there were no plans to reintroduce National Service. Then we get this announcement yesterday. Unbelievable

Vote them out to help out.

The Tories took away your futures & your freedom of movement now they want your weekends too.

When all the Tories kids start doing it, but let's be honest he wasn't thinking of the rich kids when he thought of this.

Reduced our Armed Forces more than any other G8 country. 18. Highest number of MP's that have been arrested for sexual offences. 19. Highest number of MP's that have been sacked for corruption and Fraudulent acts. 20. Voted to allow Bankers to have unlimited bonus's even though the bankers caused the crash of 2008. 21. More libraries closed due to council cuts than any other modern country. 22. Ruined and destroyed the Train services by giving private companies tax payers money as subsidies. 23. Voted against Labours creation of the minimum wage. 24. Water companies failing to produce safe drinking water due to profits going to the rich shareholders normally in other countries. 25. Trebled the National Debt whilst giving Tax cuts to the rich. 26. Promised £350 million per week after Brexit for our NHS. 27. Promised 40 brand new hospitals of which one was built. 28. Had a Liar and a Criminal Prime Minister, which is a G8 first. 29. And a Prime minister who crashed the economy and increased the mortgages of hundreds of thousands of people but was in office less time than a Lettuce is on a supermarket shelf. 30. And finally, wasted billions of Tax payers money on crony PPE contracts for their friends and other Tory donators many of which made millions and invest it in tax havens. God bless the Tories. The most evil and corrupt party this country has ever seen.

£2.5bn to fund this crackpot idea could instead create an Apprenticeship Scheme to give youngsters a skilled trade and a way to earn a decent living wage, and boost the economy at the same time.

I had to do national service in South Africa for a government I hated, and I felt like I was in prison for being young. The problem is this suggested policy is coming from a government that doesn’t give a shit about community service. They don’t care about community, which is the reason behind the constant culture wars. If there was a true community and cohesion driver behind this policy, it would be worth considering, but it’s just like everything else. The Tory party does. It’s a slogan and punishment for being young.

why wont the young peoples youth services we cut, whos tuition fees we tripled, whos mental health services aren't being remotely funded enough, whos social media we've refused to regulate, whos rents we've refused to cap, whos wages we've consistently kept below the living wage, whos swimming pools and libraries we've closed, whos NHS bursary we took away, whos opportunity to live, love and work in the EU we took away, who's preferred candidates we deride and mock and who's EMA we robbed.... why WOULDN'T those people want to work for free for us at the weekend in between their second and third jobs that they now need to afford to rent a single room in a shared house...

My 19 years old nephew is currently doing his basic training at Catterick, then going to Bovington to the Tank Regiment. This is the type of person needed in the armed forces, commited volunteers not reluctant "press ganged" youths.

It's not "volunteering" it's mandatory unpaid labour that will include a punishment for refusing. 18 year olds are legally adults, some have jobs, family members to care for or employers on weekends. This is ridiculous.

I was born in 1947 and avoided National Service as it ended in 1960. It's only fair that Private Sunak starts with all us silly old buggers. Two weeks on the front line and slowly work down to the current 18 year olds. All together, "They don't like it up 'em."

Let's just ignore how insulting it is to young people. He's basically saying young people can't think for themselves so get them in the army and sort them out. I work with a young workforce and they are amazing, very smart and hard working.

Who should national service be for 18 year olds. Anyone who wants national service no matter how old should do it first. You want it you do it.

To all young people, never forget what these tories would happily do to you for their own personal gain, keep that fact in your mind for the rest of your lives, and teach these tories a lesson at every future election.

Its not just the UK introducing conscription other European countries are doing the same. They are preparing the canon fodder for the battlefields they have planned.

I spent 10yrs as an infantryman, over my dead body will the government make my son do national service.

As an ex service man there is no way i would want to baby sit a bunch of 18 people who have no interest in being in the forces. Its hard enough keeping those who sign up voluntary. As for unpaid work in the community, just get prisoners to do it.

How would he enforce it on Nationalists in Northern Ireland, where he legislates to exonerate British Army personnel who executed unarmed civilians lying wounded on the ground ?

I know it's too late now because Parliament is porogued but there was talk in the past of lowering the voting age to 16 and had that been achieved by this lapless government the result of this election would have been completely catastrophic for the Conservatives. If the youth were counted as disinterested in politics before, they are completely polarised now by bringing this government to it's kness!!

Sheer desperation by the Tories here, they have found yet another new demographic to alienate. Why would you serve a country in which your future prospects have never been so bleak? Skyrocketing rents, home ownership completely unaffordable, public services in turmoil, no dentistry, food banks, mass immigration and the economic harm that has been inflicted upon the younger generation by leaving the EU - the UK is a disaster. Young people would be better off leaving the UK and building a life elsewhere, this country has nothing to offer them.

Just to say, I shall (if lucky enough to live on...) will be 71 this coming August '24, and I have _never_ and I will _never_ vote Tory. (Neither did my late Mum.) Too many suggestions are made through perhaps, polls etc, that old / older people are more likely to vote Tory...😡 and if true, I soooo wish they wouldn't! All the people that support national service are all conveniently old enough to be left out, and conveniently young enough to have never been in national service. I'm 18 and here's my say- if you want to fight a war then go do it yourself, life is precious and I'm not letting you take it away from me just because you fell out with someone.

I lost a dear friend of mine in a pointless proxy war because he joined under the assumption of utilising opportunities. What young people want is a decent standard of living not being forced to fight in useless wars because a "politician" wants to stay in power. Life is too precious for that and this idiot of a "prime minister" is using whatever he can to cling on. Just goes to show what he really cares about.

A stupid proposal and highly discriminatory against young people. We live in a democratic country where volunteering and serving the community is done by consent, not force. What Rishi should have proposed is properly funded de-centralised community support package aimed at enhancing a variety of good courses on a voluntary basis.

When those that have commited minor offences are compelled to do Community Service it's for the purpose of punishment, but they expect you or your children to do it for society's and your own 'betterment' (and of course ignore that it is therefore, in effect, a punishment for the gross transgression of simply being young!)

I think they should extend the scheme to age 65 and have compulsory service for over 50s doing two years support work for armed forces, police, nhs, fire service etc. Any parent earning over 150k a year and politicians can send their kids to active duty service and lead from the front. Sit back, watch the pearl clutching and outrage. As someone who has done 19 years service for this country (20 next year :) ) I find it amusing to see the older keyboard warriors who have never done a days service in their lives, pontificate and patronise others. Don’t ask others to carry a load that you’re not prepared to carry yourself. Because that would be rank cowardice and hypocrisy. 👍🏼
