I lived in Singapore for a couple of years. There's nothing like cruising around on a bike late at night there and it's beautiful and warm. I want to go back and ride again.
Reminds a lot of the LA fixed gear scene from 10 years ago, but on a smaller scale. It was massive. There were so many bike crews (some called bike tribes). There was a ride or race for everything from casual rides to fundraisers to epic races. You had people from all walks of life and ages ride and racing with each other. At a race, you might have an elite racer, next to a gang member, next to a dentist, next to a hipster at the starting line. Everyone respecting each other and having fun. These were underground fixed gear races, but they were well organized with different categories. If you ever wanted to see LA people united, the fixed gear scene was the place to be. Let's not forget the bike parties too. Thousands( not hundreds) would come out for those.
we were all young and stupid once, but we dont have social media back then. some of them can be super toxic, so the community leader must have a clear guideline so they can ride in a civil manner. im a lone rider, and i feel frustated sometimes when i saw a big cyclist group that ride like it's their grandfather's road.
"We were all young and stupid once"?? There are hell ALOT of ADULTS who are still stupid. (No, i'm not a youngster, i'm an adult with 2 kids). Yes, sometimes there are "big cycling groups" BUT they typically ride very very late at night or pre-dawn hours.... when MOST people are still sleeping and the roads are very quiet. Yes, they do occupy one whole lane and sometimes encroach on a second lane for overtaking. But of course there are anti-cyclists drivers who, given THREE empty lanes, choose to follow behind the "big group" of cyclists and then complain that they have been blocked by "road hogging" cyclists.....like one second-rate local actor.
*To be honest most of these youngsters or YPs for short most are daredevils on the road dangerous to road users. When they are in groups, they will act viciously showing that they are bigger and better. But when police come all quiet like hamsters. Do something fruitful in your life. Even better go Australia or UK you will be accepted there. Open a bike shops and u will get more recognition there. Not in Singapore please!*
@@jsp001 I wonder...do the rules say you can break them when no one else is looking or using? Same with jaywalking, does it mean you have the right to jaywalk when there are no cars on the road? No right... You can do it but at your own risk and responsibility and it's still your fault when you cause inconvenience to others, no matter how few cars (or none) are on the road!
@@GrowInTheDark Listen up dude... Dont make FALSE assumptions. Did i ever say one can "break the rules" regardless whether "anyone looking or using"?? Please show. However, i did say that a group of cyclists on the roads will practically occupy one whole lane (the left most lane of course) due to the fact that they CAN ride two abreast on roads with 2 or more lanes (same direction). With 2 abreast, the outer cyclist will practically be cycling at least along the middle of that lane. There's NO car small enough to drive alongside the 2-abreast cyclists and yet keep within that left lane, let alone that the vehicle should keep a safety distance of 1.5m from them! So, technically, a group of cyclists will be occupying the left most lane. A motorbiker can squeeze alongside the 2 abreast cyclists and still keep within that lane of course. Secondly, you gave the eg. of "jaywalking"... that depends on whether there are any pedestrian/signalised crossings within 50m. If there's none and the road's clear... WHAT "jaywalking" then?? Finally, you said, "...its still your fault when you cause inconvenience to others , no matter how few cars (or none) are on the road!" If there's "none" on the road...how tf do one "inconvenience" anyone else in the first place?? You seem to be a "genius" with that kind of thinking.... Nah! I'm kidding!! You're a dumb fool. Now go drown in ur own stupidity.
Yup it’s true I’m the golden era one and seeing these makes me remember me younger days hanging out at mbs. Still riding but old already. Round island gonna kill me . 😂
Thanks for the vid Rozz. Truth of the matter is, some of kids are hazard to road users because not all of them can control a brakeless track bike well enough. But then again, having powerful disc brakes don't guarantee you wont be a danger either, look at some of our drivers here in Singapore. I personally ride a fixie, due to how practical it is. I choose to add a front brake due to its practicality.
It's not practical to add a front brake, it is safety. You can be the best fixie rider in the world, but that doesn't change the fact that if your chain snaps, you no longer have a brake.
@@ginsederp seat belts can save a life in the event of a crash. So it's pretty practical imo. Practicality and safety are not mutually exclusive my friend.
Reading about a 16 year old gang member slashing another 16 year old over rival gang disputes, there are bigger problems than fixies. Instead of straight up banning them, gotta join them and maybe work with them on how to educate present and future riders.
This was a REALLY great look into, not just the community, but the people behind it. This is going to sound corny but I believe it... The searching for a community, family, or brotherhood (I know it's not all guys but predominantly it is and I'm only commenting from my male perspective) is universal. Geography, culture, ethnicity, language, and class doesn't really change much except the means of finding it. I found it in the kitchen at 13 and I'm 37 running my own restaurant. That camaraderie is just as meaningful now as it was then. These young men are in no way different. Their chosen "path" could be a helluva'lot worse. As a teenager the easiest place to find that "love" is in a criminal gang and it's never real, nor sustainable. My hats off to him. He's the kinda guy thats actions should be looked up to.
thanks for sharing! it's best when teenagers find the sense of adventure & broterhood that we all long for when we're young in something that's good for them :)
Every country and sometimes each state has the same 😅 it’s really cool knowing you can go ride your bike in traffic and find people similar or doing the same.
I love this episode and it shines a huge light on the underground scene. I appreciate the exposure and everything. Although they do ride dangerously you have to know this culture has been around in the US since 90's and it was started by bike messengers. Its cool to see how it has spread to almost every country.
It's always nice seeing the riders do these insane tricks they do always a sight at hillion. Could never see myself doing them, just the riding/sense of freedom is enough and with a group especially even if I'm the only fixed gear rider in my group of friends.
Bicycle stunts, there's x games. Single gear and without brakes, there's an Olympics sports called Velodrome. Build places for them to learn and excel, creating a proper face and "ambassador" for it will encourage riders to become more rational.
Gahmen don't want support how? Singapore gahmen don't even want to chip in a single cent to support these riders, how to go xgames all? We go xgames confirm tio trash one
Easy for you to say. Us fixed rider never get this kind of thing. What you think this oversea ka? Even here at Malaysia we never get this kind of thing.
@@ROSE-by5su definitely much better than fixie but what can a roadbike do? I can't skid using roadbike, it is too expensive and I can't express too much using roadbike. If you like speed, then roadbike is for you. But I like learning new stunt and I love riding fixie which is for me much better than roadbike.
All respect for this community. I taught only few country's are in this sport. And also Philippines the fixie community are getting bigger and stronger I hope the law should be stop it can't be accepted we just want have fun on a sport.. keep safe and GODBLESS more respect from this younger to older fixie users hope will get the freedom on you guys stay safe
That's what they say is true. I used to ride fixed gear and feel like I'm breezing the wind and my stress is gone. Don't blame yourself doing stupid things because you have alot of fun yourself and be happy
Fixes ain't the only way to form a sense of identity. I rode fixes back in 1990's.. people will move onto greater things in life.. And there's abundance of that..
haha fixed gear scene in singapore is so much nice with those expensive bikes. they're using example cinellis for fgfs, here in philippines they would put that in a museum lol
i js want to say i’m a fixie rider myself and i live in chicago and the fixie community here is big and we have massive disputes too we are having one this november 25th from 606 to downtown to see the light up tree
You can still ride fixed and put brakes just follow the law. From there hope for the best and see how your community evolved. Ride safe always homies from philippines.
Gosh. As a motorcyclist, I feel these riders. Some of us just wanna ride our bikes & enjoy the ride. Social media didn't do justice & certain "black sheep", incidents make us motorcyclists look bad. The restrictions of motorcycles off road, border closures and riding in groups of 5 (Unable to do meet ups) is chocking the hobby & passion. The internet is really toxic, one mistake on the road captured on camera & that's it; you'll be judged by people who think they know better. On top of that, the 10K COE left fellow riders helpless. I pray to God that these COVID measures end & the borders open once more. Really can't stand some boomers trying to be wannabe enforcers & judges.
I'm a road cyclist. The problem I've seen especially on Facebook groups are that motorists like to see SG roads as built for motor vehicles and motor vehicles alone. They see cyclists as hogging the road because of our lower speed and therefore don't belong
These boys (and girls too) sure have some sweet skills!! Let them have their spaces to practice their skills and have their fun. Complainers, especially those who hardly ride any bicycles, shouldnt hate and complain on cyclists so much just because they cant do what cyclists can do. Its a GOOD thing that these youngsters do cycling instead of joining secret societies, taking drugs, etc... But, having said all that.... these cyclists, fixies or not, should always follow the traffic rules and practice good cycling etiquette wherever they may roam, especially on the roads. Ride Safe Guys!!
I used to rip around on a dope road bike growing up. Really thinking of going fixed gear soon. It's like having a fast unicycle. That's exactly what I want. Looks like a blast to me. I don't even need a helmet because I have dreads. Sickkkkk
@@fafafifufu Yes it is, but most youngsters are more concerned about looks than the ride quality. Like you said a good balance of both, but I would prefer a nicer riding bike than a bike that looks good but rides sh_t
I swear bro I a fixed gear rider myself I agree like most if them are punks and judge bikes like cheap heavy bikes or light beginner bikes like tsunami and aerosprint it doesent matter as long as you know what your doing your good
Any road bike episode ? Not all in Singapore riding community are reckless or like to beat the traffic. We are responsible adults with family and kids. We comes from all walk of life, have a proper day time job. We love riding our bikes. You should hear from us the road bikers too.
Nice to see this community of riders. Whenever I am in Sg i always go skateboarding around Raffles Place/CBD (Thank goodness the 5/0 are more chill) and i would see these guys. Super nice guys. I can see the appeal of riding at night in Singapore as the roads are nice. But this break law ?? serious ?

I think I was the 2nd wave of early adopters when fixie first hit the sg scene I think I was 26 back then ? ...bought a surly creamroller from TR bikes by lynton Ong . Sure it was really fun.... The scene was buzzing .. But I got into an accident and was in the A&E for 8 hours unconscious.
No matter what bike type, not all riders are bad. But its kinda sad to see some things u really love need to be change just because of all this black sheep.
In other country like German 2 seperate Brakes on a fixie is law since many many years. And for all other bicycle too! I dont überstand why not have these Brakes because they brake better than blocking the wheel with feet and solide the blocking rear wheel
Hope you guys could make a document about Singapore bike trials cyclists/athletes. Those are the real underground. Start frm Spain in 1980. Active in Sg for 20yrs + there is a group of cult practicing but still not much people know about.
If you build a Velodrome the fixed gears will come. Give them a free open safe venue to ride and race their fixed gear bikes. The fixies won't ride their bikes dangerously on the streets.
In the Philippines, those who don’t abide by the traffic rules or those who have no concern for their own safety is called a Jempoy-which is hated by the majority.
Jempoys are the reasons, why cars honk at every bike they see nowadays, i get honked for doing a left turn, or leaving the bike lane due to a car parking there.
Chill... many countries in the world implemented the same sane law.. Having a front brake didn't change the riding quality at all.. Just obey the law, u'll be fine.. Having 21 stitches on ur head is not cool..
Nah, still doesn't change my mind about fixie riders. I've been riding around Singapore for 2 years and almost every night I will encounter these fixie riders making a nuisance of themselves. Who in their right mind rides a bike while eating yogurt? fixie riders that's who. Nobody is impress that you can ride the bike with no hands bro.
Hi, nice documentary! It unveils the reality of the more unknown, underground side of Singapore. What about doing one about the underground music scene?
I’m still riding fixed gear even though of the new regulations. Riding fixed gives u the adrenaline/friendship/thrills & the community right now is much better as u pass by fixie riders they’ll wave and telling u to “ride safe”. It’s so much better to have people having the same interests as you.
Dam , this video is so emotional for me even tho i dont live in singapore ( i really want to go ) As a fixie rider i got the feeling like them , being free And to be honest , everything in this vid feel so real for me lets just hope fixie comunity would come up to my place (Putrajaya)
I personally not against having hobby that ppl love and enjoy, but to be a nuisance to others, that is a big no-no. YP likes to hit back when u told them off but respect is mutual, singaporean are, u dont bother me i wont bother you. Same as PMDs back then, everyday i as a pedestrain will always get a near-miss incidents, it is only aft the law kicks in i am able to walk peacefully.
