About Young Sheldon:
It’s 1989 and 9-year-old Sheldon Cooper has skipped four grades to start high school along with his less-intellectual older brother. As he struggles to be understood by his family, classmates and neighbors, his mother arms him with the best tool she can come up with: reminding bullies his dad is the football coach and his brother is on the team. His twin sister doesn’t share his exceptional mind, but she has a much clearer vision of what life has in store for the young genius.

@@maxb5201 A read option has a tackle that does not block the defensive end. QB and RB go to the right side, offense lets defense end slip while everyone else is blocking. When the slipped defense comes around the end, the QB has the option to hand off to the RB, or in some cases keep if the slipped defender takes to the RB like they usually will, the QB keeps it and runs around the Collison. Statistically, you're better off judging the play on a case by case basis. If you're on the 12, and only have a few yards to go for a first, you should go. If the first is out of reach, THEN you punt.
@fletchermaxwell
@fletchermaxwell 2 года назад
@@billlupin8345 Agree on it being a case-by-case basis, but there's way more to it than that. It's the likelihood of getting it, considering the situation you'll be in if you get it, and the situation you'll be in if you don't. If you have a 66%, or 2/3 chance of getting it, and you're on the 12, then you're essentially risking three points automatically if you don't get it, plus a good chance of giving up a touchdown, along with the hit to morale and confidence, for a solidly good chance of getting first and 10 around your own 15. Odds are in your favor, like if you roll a die and win so long as it doesn't come up on 5 or 6, you're probably going to win; it's probably going to be 1-4; but even with good odds that's not probably not a bet you want to make. I think the problem is that people get attached to the ball when they have it, like it's their ball, and they don't want to give up what belongs to them if they don't have to, but that's an unhelpful way of thinking of it.
@billlupin8345
@billlupin8345 2 года назад
@@fletchermaxwell No, there's really not much more to it. You judge each play on a case by case basis. If you think the odds of pushing that last yard or so are that low, you should judge accordingly. It can also be demoralizing on the other end. If you march them from one end of the field to the other 3 yards at a time, it teaches them their best efforts only slow the steamroll.
@fletchermaxwell
@fletchermaxwell 2 года назад
@@billlupin8345 Pretty hard disagree. If somebody offers you a chance to make a bet with 80% odds that you'll win, you still need to know what you're risking and what you'll get if you win.

For example, it would be great to go for it anywhere from the 50 yard line or further, since that's likely where a punt return would be anyway, whereas if you're on the 12 like they were, it's not the best gamble to take unless you have no choice. I think Sheldon bumped into an unusual scenario where the math worked out differently, in favor of going for it, for complicated reasons that only professional sports betters could understand. In an ironic turn of events, Sheldon bumped into some positive variance, leading to lots of popularity and respect, at Georgie's expense.

Just because you statistically have a greater chance of getting a first down isn’t as important as where the line of scrimmage is. So what if you have a greater than 50% chance of getting the first down. If you miss, the other team only has to go 12 yards to score.

If I remember correctly it wasn't never punt on 4th down period it was once you get past the 30-40 yard line because statistically you gave yourself more of a chance at scoring than surrendering points in the long run but I could be wrong.

As an English person who has ZERO idea about the fundamental rules of American Football, but who HAS played some American Football video games in the past, I always "went for it" on 4th down (usually with a 'Hail Mary', because that was one of the few offensive plays I actually understood lol). I mean, why would I want to kick the ball to the other team? I ain't giving that ball up unless I absolutely HAVE to!
@SendarSlayer
@SendarSlayer 2 года назад
That's my thought process too. You can reset if you manage to run less than 10 metres. Less if you've already made a little ground. If you focused your team on making those plays work surely you'd make more downs (Is that what they're called?) overall as well.

Sadly, while this worked out in sitcom land, little Sheldon fails to grasp the effect of selection bias on statistical analysis. While a disproportionate number of 4th down gambles succeed, it is the choice of the coaches in the sample population to only gamble in favourable conditions (i.e., 4th and 1) that skews results toward the positive. If gamble plays were called in a random sampling of all possible 4th down situations, including 4th and 12/long, then the results would be far different.

@Youtube_Stole_My_Handle_Too
@Youtube_Stole_My_Handle_Too 2 года назад
That's not the main takeaway from this. When you're in a disadvantaged position you are better off playing with greater risk - assuming you can afford the possible loss (which is not really an important restriction in this case because it's something as innocent as football) . Most coaches don't follow this reasoning because they are afraid of criticism from their own. They are probably too stupid to explain to their own it doesn't matter with how much one lose. This lack of reasoning infects all parts on society, even in courts. Far too often does the defendant play the innocent card in a murder case even when the available evidence have shown to be more than enough for conviction. In many cases it would be wiser to argue that the victim deserved to die. Our society is sick today because it has unlimited patience with small offences, but no patience with a huge one. Society today is simply too stupid to do simple addition.

@@kokukokubin6092 That is not his failing at all, it was his poor understanding of the game and the math of statistics (writers fault obviously). Other wise his data would have been complete and his results far more complicated. It would have been impossible to not to wind up with a cheat sheet with 4th down distance, field position, score, clock... all of it. And that's just the base level, in a real game the coach has to weigh everything with team dynamics: do I trust in my defense more or my offense? How do they compare against today's opponent? Is the weather a factor? What about special teams? You get the idea.

Technically the math works differently at each level of football, but it is clearly a smart move in certain situations
@JKSSubstandard
@JKSSubstandard 10 месяцев назад
True. But the reality is, at most levels the math holds true. If you are an average or better offense, than any distance under 4-5 yards is statistically better going for it than not. We've seen some nfl teams adopting this mindset successfully.
