I had been a YTT student in 1978/80 and remember those years as the best I had in my youth, so sad that I had to leave Australia in late 1980. But music is still part of my life, and still, have high hopes.. :)

+Lorretta Lewis the 2012 version only lasted one year but I remember watching it every time it was on and loving it. It's not just the older generation who loved YTT, it's also the younger generation who enjoy it (mainly the 2012 one). It's a shame it only lasted one season because it was a really good, decent, feel good show for families and most stuff that is on tv these days are crap and not family friendly

But it was done differently and not the same format - it was more like a competition and not a "show"; I think if they had made it more like before it might have been more successful and still be on. I thought Rob Mills was a good choice of host too. But hey, what can you do?

Geez I wish I was around then. To see the great Australian shows shape Australian TV. Countdown, ytt, neighbours, etc. I was born in 96 and I really wish I was born earlier to be able to have watched all the amazing TV shows especially ytt and countdown. I love music. I've been obsessed watching clips of ytt and countdown just wishing I was around back then to enjoy it.

Rodney Bailey: It was a really well-produced show which had excellent young vocalists, most of whom went onto huge careers. No egos (certainly not in the beginning), no scandal or anything like that, just good, clean entertainment. I was 6 when it debuted, so grew up with it and remember Dannii Minogue, Tina Arena, Sally Boyden, Debra Byrne and Jamie Redfern before they were stars. Some of the later production numbers were cheesy, but it WAS the 1980s!! (I personally loved Vikki Broughton, Nicole Cooper, Jane Scali, Karen Knowles and Julie Ryalls!!)

The success of the show depended so much on the character of Johnnie Young. Long before there was much public sensibility about the exploitation and possible abuse of performing children, Johnnie Young set standards where children were treated with the greatest respect. He was genuine, loving, caring and encouraging. And the success of those young people really did him proud.

It was great to see them sign off with their signature rendition of "All My Loving" at the finish. Years after the original show was cancelled it was unsuccessfully revived in a more modern format. It flopped after only a few episodes, and one thing that I noticed during this unsuccessful revival was that they didn't sing "All My Loving" at the finish. It was no wonder that the modern version flopped.

2:10 - Jane Scali was 11 years old! Jamie Redfern, Philip Gould and Debbie(now Debra) Byrne were 14 years old, Vicki Broughton was already 16 years old and Rod Kirkham would turn 16 in October, 1971. 16 years would become the "retirement" age for YTT members in latter years.

@neilforbes416
@neilforbes416 5 лет назад
Rod Kirkham is only 6 months younger than me. I was born in April, 1955 with Rod being born in October of that year. The first edition of YTT was recorded Friday, 23rd April, 1971 and broadcast by Station ATV-Melbourne the following night, Saturday, 24th April(ANZAC Day Eve). As you say, Vicki was born in February, 1954, she'd have already been too old for YTT as she was already 16 in 1970 when Station HSV-Melbourne finally axed "Brian & The Juniors".

n 1958 Naylor moved to Melbourne television station HSV-7, transferring Swallow's Juniors to television where it was renamed Brian and the Juniors. Running until 1969, it provided a stepping stone for performers such as Debra Byrne, Rod Kirkham, Jane Scali, Peter Doyle, Patti Newton, Anne Watt, Vikki Broughton and Jamie Redfern. Naylor also hosted the SSB Adventure Club in the early 1960s with Madeleine Burke,[4] and appeared as a regular on the station's daytime variety program Time For Terry in 1965. He became HSV-7's chief news presenter in 1970 replacing Geoff Raymond. Naylor switched to GTV-9 in 1978. He presented the Melbourne edition of National Nine News until he retired from this position on 27 November 1998. He was replaced by Peter Hitchener. sadly brian died in the Kinglake bushfires in February 2009
@neilforbes416
@neilforbes416 5 лет назад
As I understand it, the show was called "Swallows Juniors" at the time the future Mrs Bert Newton, Pattie McGrath was part of the show. It became "Brian & The Juniors" after the Swallows Biscuit Company sponsorship collapsed. Brian Naylor was hosting the show at Station HSV-Melbourne when it was switched to TV from radio. The name change would've occurred in the early 1960s. In its last year, it was axed in 1970, the "Juniors" were all six future Young Talent Timers, Rod Kirkham, Vicki Broughton, Philip Gould, Debbie(now Debra) Byrne, Jamie Redfern and Jane Scali, the line-up also included Jamie's brother, Derek Redfern, and future members, Greg Mills and Trevor Hindmarch. I don't think Julie Ryles was a "Junior". Ryles would partner Greg Mills when she was picked, along with Greg Mills to augment the YTT team around July or August, 1971. They joined the show in time to take part in the shooting of the featurette, "Caravan Holiday", but the featured song, "The Rain, The Park & Other Things"(penned by Kornfeld & Duboff) originally done by The Cowsills, does not have Greg's or Julie's voice as the track was recorded for the first YTT album issued around May or June, 1971 when it was still a 6-member team. Trevor Hindmarch, who'd been a contestant on the show, doing "cute" little Irish folk songs, "Delaney's Donkey" or O'Flaherty's Motor Car" being typical, celebrated his 12th birthday the night YTT debuted on Station ATV-Melbourne. He would be Jamie's replacement on Edition #2 for 1972, with Edition #1 being Jamie's farewell show(he was presented with a small cassette recorder, made by Sony). Trevor's first song on his debut was the Johnny Farnham novelty hit, "Sadie(The Cleaning Lady)" which he duly recorded for the second YTT album in 1972.
