Its a joke but it's not funny it's sad. If youre a journalist please note or journal this as it is. A joke. When the American justice system is ran by clowns and comedians. Smh. We got wake up. Smh he is ensuring that the this young defendant knows that he has his life in his hands. These guys u brought in here to try to get you off can't do anything unless I let them.
When you take a step back and look at the situation it shows how society prefers to throw money at the problem instead of being accountable for their actions…..
If you take into account how much he makes per hour and the amount of time it takes to have to write a paper WHILE citing 10 sources(meaning actual research), this is far more costly monetarily.
@@lashawnjackson444 Is it normal for the judge to hold lawyers accountable? Yes it is, that is what we call 'adulthood'. When you grow up, you'll notice that normal adults are responsible, prudent individuals.
EXACTLY!! Hahaha.. that paper is nothing compared to the amount of writing lawyers have to do! I bet he will pay one of his assistants, or someone, to write it though! For how much he is fighting it, he isn't going to write it! Hahaha
This is a judge who loves to be the center of a case and loves to power trip. I've seen this before and I know judges like this. In the middle of a trial, you are taking all kinds of time to make someone write a paper and lost sources, all while you are judging whether the paper is satisfactory to you? Ridiculous.
If I were the judge and I handed down that assignment, I'd talk to the lawyer about the contents of the paper once submitted. I'd grill the lawyer to determine whether the lawyer has a deep, detailed familiarity with paper's content, as one might expect of the real author. I'd also look for indicators the lawyer was freshly familiar with some of the subtleties of logic and context in cited sources.
@@warpedweirdo if my time is much better served defending my client, then I would gladly hand it off. My paralegal will have to fill me in on the cliff notes. This is Petty and demeaning treatment from the judge...
@@jacal420 The lawyer can decide the judge's petty and demeaning treatment is too much to bear and spend 20 days in jail instead. I'm curious what the lawyers did to earn the judge's ire. The impression I have right now, based on his similar treatment of one of the jurors who failed to show up for jury duty, is that this judge is a self-righteous, petty tyrant in his court room. My info is very limited, however, so I have no idea how closely my impression matches reality.
This judge is a joke. Holds the lawyer in contempt. Instead of a normal fine wants a 17 page essay but wants it in a certain format so it can be "published" which is unheard of. I think that's what the other lawyer said, which the judge said " we'll deal with that at another time". If the judge is worried about justice why would he ask the lawyer to write a long essay during trial when the lawyer should be focused on defending his client not worrying about a 20 day jail sentence from the judge if the essay is in the wrong format. I understand the judge keeping order but never seen a homework assignment issued for contempt.
Please, a 17 page paper takes hours a wad of cash takes minutes. I side with the judge. What do you learn from paying? Nothing. What do you learn from an essay regarding your misconduct? Much much much.
@@elainekellogg6345 not a good choice. 20 days in jail can easily make you lose a job and not have money for rent or other bills.all over some pride in this case.but if your willing to be jobless and in debt in this economy you probably don't have to worry about those issues anyway
Are you trying to be funny or just don’t understand? This lawyer was found to be in contempt of court for illegal behavior related to conduct toward other lawyers in the case. They could be sentenced to 20 days in jail, but the judge is just trying to teach the lawyer some civility, and remind him that all of the lawyers are on the same team (ie: upholding the law) by doing the lunch mitigation option.
This judge is doing too much. He's either putting everyone in jail OR making people write papers like their in high school. He would not have that type of leverage in a NY court room.
Just shows no one should take trumps indictments serious. I mean cmon, if you can get jailed for not writing an essay in New York, you can get jailed for anything.
I googled that judge's name and it gets better. He ordered a juror to do a 30-page paper because she didn't show up for jury duty, for the same trial. He also ordered another attorney held in contempt to pay a $250 fine and to buy lunch at a particular restaurant for all the other attorneys. I couldn't find any mention of why they were held in contempt though except for the juror.
@@jenf1387 the entire event you the depicted of the attorney having to buy lunch etc. 3:22 IS IN THIS VIDEO!!! THAT'S WHY I SAID YOU CLEARLY DIDN'T WATCH IT. LOL 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Same - it’s not even about the cost (because a lawyer would definitely make more money in the 20 days that otherwise would have been lost to jail time) it’s about the civility - imagine being so twisted that you see someone who is essentially your coworker as not even worth buying lunch for. Judge is trying to remind the lawyer that everyone is there for the same reason (ie: see justice served)
That would be a terrible way to waste $1000 and then spent 20 days in jail. Probably also catch some extra days for lying to the court. The judge is going to question him on the essay, and the sources. There’s no getting around this.
Im am English major in the masters program at Arizona State University, and let me tell you, a 17 page paper with 10 primary and secondary sources is not an easy feature to accomplish. Though i must say, the judge should have let him write the paper in MLA or Chicago because APA is for the birds.
I'd estimate it is a full weekend's work. That's for something of appropriate standard for a student - publishable standard is, as the other lawyer intervened to say, an extremely high standard. The judge seemed to back down a little on publishable.
@@thomasdalton1508 bro, there is no way he's getting that paper done in 2 days. That is going to take a week, at least. And honestly, the lawyer could argue that the judge is taking time away from him being able to defend his client by being forced to write a paper like that.
@@WilliamWebbOfficial I find, once I've got a decent idea of what I want to say, it takes me about 45 minutes to write a page. So that's a full day of writing for 17 pages. A day of research and outlining first, gives you two days. It might not be an A-grade law school paper, but it would be something that met the basic assignment.
It's been 4 months and they haven't even picked a jury... instead he's got lawyers buying their colleagues lunch and writing essays like first year law students 🙄 What's his excuse?
@@serjeantpepper2986 it's about giving them a choice of jail or write an essay and buy colleagues lunch, for me that's a simple request, He could of just sentenced them to jail time.
@@serjeantpepper2986 what they did doesn't matter, the judge decided they the offence was committed and in a court room the judge is king. We have all seen bad behaviour by lawyers so know they get away with a lot, this judge obviously had been rubbed p the wrong way, If it had been a defendant he would of been sent to jail without the option of doing something else. Lawyers have gotten away with to much for to long, its past time the judges acted. Once fond in contempt a lawyer would normally just be removed from the court room for the day whilst defendants and the public would be jailed in most cases. These two were lucky not to of been jailed.
@@alunchurcher7060 what they supposedly did absolutely matters. Did they act to disrupt normal court proceedings or were they simply doing their jobs as avid defenders and advocates on their client's behalf? Because if it's one it would make the judge an impartial arbiter of justice, but if it's the other it would make the judge a prejudiced tyrant, perhaps even creating grounds for future appeals of whatever ruling he eventually hands down.
Dude should just have Chat GPT write a 20 page essay, fact check it and rewrite it on his own words. That's basically what I would do when I was in college except I would rewrite my own rough drafts where I would assert facts I wasn't sure about.
I was thinking the same exact thing! That paper could be written in one day 10 minutes for the paper from chat, and then a couple of hours to critique it reword it and then run it through a plagiarism checker. Job done !!!!
Pretty sure that plan would fall apart when the judge questions the lawyer about the contents of the paper, and the contents of the sources used on the paper. That works in university when the teacher doesn’t really care, but this judge is mad now and is going to actually read it.
@@dovebair After checking the facts, like I suggested, the lawyer would be well versed in the contents and the facts. Besides, the judge didn't say it had to get a passing grade.
@@nancyzehr3679 what does that mean??? He hurt the judge's feelings? The prosecutors? Peoples lives and futures are on the line and he's out here assigning book reports and forcing people to go out on lunch dates. It's been 4 months and they still haven't picked a jury. This is straight circustry 🎪
re: "You got a 6 digit bar number" Attorneys admitted to practice in Georgia before 1991 have six-digit bar numbers, while those admitted after 1991 have seven-digit bar numbers. I think you misunderstood. The lawyer in question acted in an incredibly unprofessional way: disturbed court proceedings to such a degree that it would be illegal (the contempt charge). The judge is being incredibly lenient by allowing the contempt charge to be satisfied by the offending lawyer regaining his civility toward the other lawyers. The judge said the offending lawyer could purchase lunch for his colleagues, as a way to signify his commitment to civility, going forward in this case. The offending lawyer promised the judge to do so, by a certain date, then failed to do so, then made multiple excuses about why they should not have to, even though it was the order of the court. Then they tried to appeal, even though they had given up their chance to appeal by making the plea bargain over the contempt charge with the judge at a previous court date. Absolutely embarrassing behavior that will harm their career going forward, no question.
No one should even humor this kind of nonsense and the judge should be disbarred for suggesting anything of the sort. It would be much more professional to just push the contempt of court charge through. This circus is a waste of taxpayers money.
@@ricpump8863 no, he gave the lawyers a choice. do the paper/buy lunch or jail. I think it was perfectly fine and the circus was the lawyers acting like clowns in court
@Ric Pump stop chatting nonsense if you don't know the full story. They were supposed to be held in contempt for unprofessional and disorderly conduct. The judge is literally having mercy on them
@Adam Lanza Adam, you gotta stop pretending you’re an expert on psychological disorders, he is a Judge, who’s job it is to hand out sentences and he works within the confines of the legislation provided to him. Internet has made so many people experts in the mental health field and the woes “Narcissist” is being thrown out every time someone doesn’t like what they hear. God bless
Seriously unprofessional conduct on the part of the two lawyers. To such a degree that the judge does not believe that the case can continue until a modicum of integrity and civility, have been returned to the court. Instead of just putting these people in jail, judge is attempting to teach, guide & remind all present how court will be run under said judge.

I disagree. I think a power trip would’ve been sending both lawyers to jail for 20 days over a contempt charge without giving them any chance to mitigate it. Please remember, these lawyers broke the law, and the judge is within his rights to hold them in contempt of court.
He has to buy lunch for the other sides attorneys for trying to drag them through the mud when it wasn't warranted. That's why they're in such big trouble. It's one thing to try and win a case above board but a whole other level to try and win dirty.
Yes, because he knows what it inquires to write a paper. It takes hours of research before you even start your thesis. In other words, gathering resourse is time consuming hard work, and extremely stressful. Been there done that. I would rather go to jail. Lol
I’ve never heard of this type of punitive punishment in my life. Should have just given him the jail time so he actually learned his lesson.. This whole essay thing is just to immasculate and assert dominance. Never heard of a homework assignment in court before for a lawyer.
Remember, video of entire trials for public consumption is a recent development. Punishments like this are "new" to us because we are now aware, but much of this has been going on for a long while. Before we only had written articles with the occasional couple of minutes on the nightly news. Most of what we think is how our judicial system works is from TV shows and movies. In other words Hollywoodized. Exaggerated and/or inaccurate for ratings. Law & Order was the closest to the real deal as per several licensed attorneys here on RU-vid.

This judge is bizarre and inappropriate. He's treating these practitioners like naughty school children. He compels speach from the first attorney in the form of his ridiculous essay (whilst making up standards for it which he backs down from because he hasn't thought any of this out) and then forces the second attorney to associate with other attorneys for lunch against his will - how inappropriate is that?
