Blair nearly lost his deposit here, could have been one of a long list of Labour candidates who fought hopeless seats and were never heard of again, but was selected for a safe Labour seat a year later and began his march to power. Now ironically his old seat in Sedgefield is Conservative.

@@jmxtvarchive9064 I think having North Eastern roots and being articulate won him the seat in Sedgefield in 1983. Also Theresa May and Tim Farron stood in the same seat in Durham in 1992, and were badly beaten, and weren't heard of again until the noughties.
