He stuck to his post when the rest of his gun crew had been killed of seriously wounded,he was seriously wounded himself but was still awaiting orders, He was the sightseer of the 5.5 inch naval gun on board, the men who would have been loading the gun etc lay dead or were dying,he could have just lay down with his own injuries as he couldnt work the gun by himself and he must have been in a lot of pain,but instead he was still willing to stay at his post and wait for further instructions,he wasnt giving up His medal would have been awarded for extreme discipline, determination, endurance and courage in the face of the enemy, a no surrender attitude and giving his life for king and country In 1916 this would have been a great morale booster and would hopefully set the standards for other male teens at that time
