In this video we disassemble, clean, lubricate and reassemble a Garcia Mitchell 400 fishing reel. If you like the video please hit the like button and if you would like to see more of them please hit the subscribe button. YoungMartin’sReels was created to honor my dad Martin B. Stivers of Louisville KY. He was an avid fisherman and repaired thousands of fishing reels in his lifetime. I spent numerous hours watching him do so but I have forgotten most of what he taught me. Now that he is gone and I find myself in need of reel repair so I am learning how it is done and trying my best to pass it on.
If I can be of assistance, feel free to contact me Rick48cj2a@yahoo.com
I would also like to thank Dennis Kuntz of 2nd Chance Tackle. His videos have helped to fill in the gaps in my “reel” knowledge. Without his RU-vid videos I’m afraid YoungMartin’sReels would not exist.

The 400 is the high speed version of the 300. I don’t have one but I do have a left-handed 401 that I got for my left-handed grandson. I even put a beautiful blue Gomexus power knob on it for him. When he tried to use it he hated so now I have it again in my collection. I gave him a very nice Daiwa 1600C reel instead and he loves that reel. These French Mitchell reels are so over-engineered. I will say that the 401 I got had been packed with salty brown axle grease. It was absolutely NASTY! You did a pretty good explanation of the reel and how it operates especially the bail. I honestly think that at some point someone tried to force this reel sitter when it snagged something or a part inside the reel caused it to lock up. You never force snything with a fishing reel! Great video Rick! - Chris

Hello..I have one of these that was made in France sometime in the 1960s.It came with original box and extra spool and has never been used, though I know that the grease is dry and needs relubing. Thanks for taking the time to show the process!

With all the shims within the reel,it looks somewhat intimidating to attempt, though your video is certainly not lacking any detail.Nice job!

As long as you watch for the shims and put them back where they came from you would do fine. One of the great things about these reels is the ease of maintenance.

@@youngmartinsreels5314 Thanks!I MIne is new old stock with original box and papers. The serial number date the reel to 1961.I"ve fished with these old Mitchell's in my younger days and love them.I fish two local rivers for northern's and like having a heavy duty reel such as this.

Thank you for the excellent rebuild tutorial. I am rebuilding my father's Mitchell 400 that I gave him for his birthday a long time ago. I have a question for you. When you were reassembling the reel you showed a shim under the pinion gear. I did not see that shim during disassembly. I looked back through all the grease that I removed and didn't see any shim. Is it possible that this reel was assembled without any shims on the pinion? I wouldn't think you'd want the pinion rotating directly on the cover. I was looking online for a source for the shims and they seem pretty rare. I only found one source and it was in the UK. Looking at the Garcia exploded diagram and parts list, part number 81047 lists 2 shims, for a mere 20 cents! All I have to do is go back 60 years in Mr. Peabody's Wayback machine. :) FYI, I can remember buying this reel at the original Dick's Sporting Goods Store in Binghamton NY.

King, the shims were added to get the correct spacing for the gears. If the gears are correct without the shims then they are not needed. If you’ve assembled the reel and it works correctly, then don’t worry about trying to install a shim. The gear has a smooth shoulder and can ride on the case. If However, oh have a pronounced gear grind when you assemble the reel, then it’s time to look for a shim. If it turns out you need one, try contacting “TheFisherman” on EBay. He often has some difficult to find Mitchell parts.

When I put on the three shims and the finale block, then the plate followed by the nut. When I tighten down the nut though it seems to bind the rotor it does not spin freely. I did place two small shims on the shaft prior placing the rotor. Any advice or assistance?

@@emileo404 I’ve done quite a few 300 and they are very similar. So far I’ve never seen more than one shim installed under the rotor. Try removing one of them.

I have tried one, two and three with the same issue. So not sure what I am doing wrong

Try this combination and see how it works. One, very thin shim on the rotor shaft. Next, put on the rotor. Then one thin brass washer. Followed by a black plastic washer. Now the aluminum plate. On top of the plate, put one thin washer, followed by the nut. Do not over tighten the nut. It just needs to be snug. This set up will usually work.

What kind of solvent did you use to clean the grease off. I have a 440 and a 320 and they both have not been used for over 50 years. I want to clean them up and use them with my grandson, so want to make sure i have the right solvent and grease. Thanks

I use WD-40 to degrease my old reels. Someone recommended PB Blaster but the smell was too strong for me to use in my house. Since then I’ve gone back to WD-40 and I’ve never looked back.

I’ve been using the WD-40 about 6 months and I’ve had no problems with it at all. I only use it to clean and it does a great job of that. I use other products for lubrication. As for its penetration, my WD-40 has always worked except when thing were so corroded I needed to use an acid. It’s also half the price of the spray you recommend. Somebody told me to try PB-Blaster so I tried that. I was very unhappy with it. Unless your spray dissolves and wipes away I don’t se how it would work better.

@@joemomma3770 Since you were insistent that I was making a mistake in using WD40, I decided to look around at your Ballistol vs WD40. Every video I watched that compared the two had WD40 coming out on top. There were some other products that tested better than WD40. However, since I only use it to clean and it does a great job of that without damaging the old paint on the reels, I think I’ll stick with it. I’m not looking for it to lubricate or corrosion inhibit, just clean. By the way, this was one of the most damaging videos for Ballistol: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E3C5q-Tkszs.html

See, we do agree. WD40 sucks as a lubricant. I would never use it as such. I do think that it makes a really good degreaser and cleaner. Remember that I didn’t seek out your channel to tell you that you were using the wrong product. You came to me. Peace out my friend.

I did not promote the use of WD40. I was asked what I use and I told them. Most of my viewers are just as happy with its cleaning properties as I am. When I do talk about using it, I tell people not to use it it to lubricate. I’m not sure what made you so anti WD40 but I hope you get it worked out. Have a great day.
