They are stalling, clutching at straws to keep from committing perjury as they are under oath in these hearings. If he let them get away with it, it is quite unlikely they would actually get back to him later. They seem to have remarkably little respect for Congress.

Jesus Christ, the hearing was about the federal response to wildfires, not mining, so his questions were almost completely irrelevant! Do you not understand how this works? He asks the wrong questions to the wrong people at the wrong hearings, makes his message clear, and tries to make people look incompetent even though they're just trying to stay on the designated topic. Had he asked about the federal response to wildfires they would've had answers, but he came out of left field to ask them about something that's completely out of their realm of responsibilities. Don't be fooled by lazy, hacky nonsense like this, the topic of the hearing was highlighted on the screen so you should be asking "why is he talking about mining?" instead of praising him for this nonsense.

Uh, the blame is on Hawley here, the hearing was about wildfires and he's going off about China and mining because it makes for good clips. If he'd stayed on topic, there would've been an actual discussion, instead he decided to put in a show, as he always does, and make it seem like he got the best of someone. It's a cheap, lame tactic, but lots of people seem to think he kicked ass (probably because they don't understand how hearings work). The witnesses don't want to speak on topics unrelated to the focus of the hearing because a) they're not experts in the unrelated field about which Hawley is asking, and b) they understand that he, and others like him, are just putting on a good show for the folks at home (who have no idea what's happening aside from someone saying "China" and they know that's bad!)
