Want to see us put this puppy training plan into action? We brought a new puppy home, and you can watch that here: ru-vid.com/group/PL7BBgLulherlcmTpDs-zshloju4XHIN6Z
Hi A summary: 8 week - feeding by hand and putting a bit on his bowl so he learns that you give food - learn his name, when feeding is name then reward (food) - yes word, say yes and then reward. - Crate training - Potty training: after food, after a nap, after playing - Extra: teach follow food in your hand. 9 weeks - Supervision is key, they puppy is more comfortable, so you need to reach them to behave. - Same as week 8, reinforcement there. - Follow food to do a circle, make the puppy work, if they work they receive a reward. - Extra: hold the collar and reward. 10- 16 weeks - 1st week. sit, down and stand commands can be teached, better to pick just one: sit. Then way of doing is Command > stimulus > reward. So you said the command, do the movement for them to sit and then reward. - 2nd week: 1. continue with same command but now with the same gesture but without the reward. The reward comes after, this is to teach that not always need a reward. 2. Start bond, like touching them paws, ears, nails...and rewarding if they behave. - Continue teaching through those weeks other commands, 1 command per 1 or 2 weeks. - Important to learn “come” commands with their name. Use a leash to make him come with food & follow your hand with food. Increase challenge with distractions.
My puppy is 10 weeks old, he sits, stayes, goes down, stands, heels and sits when I come to stop; all on command. I started his training since his 7th week.
@@indiashante1560 Only need hard work and consistency. It's very hard. Mine also is work in progress. Just remember, get a harness instead of walking him on a collar.
It’s such a great way to mark that moment, so you can still reward with good timing, Jill! Over time, your pups will learn that inflection of the “yes” matters. And it won’t create chaos when the Bears kick a clutch field goal..😁 Maybe that adds to the excitement? Happy Training ~Ken
McCann Dog Training We have to work on the inflection for sure, because we are just as excited for that field goal as we are when our pups do what we ask them. Maybe be should change the excitement for the bears to “OH HELL YES!” LOLOL You and Kayl are great and have taught us so much! Thanks for all you guys do to help our canine citizens through educating “us people.”
19:04 very important! my dog went deaf because my family couldn't recognize the ear infection in time. we did notice the smell but didn't understand though. Make sure to smell the ears
Can you refrain from using such adorable puppies, when you doing these videos. I had to watch it three times, because the first two times, I was too busy doing the awwwww, to pay attention lol
I love how her little baby yoda ears perk up the second you say yes while training without the food. It really is a place keeper she knows means food is coming. I’m using all of your techniques with my 10 week old GSP I’ve had her for only 3 whole days and she’s already heeling, leaving my cats alone, sitting, lying down, turning left and right, sleeping all night in her crate without complaining. She’s a dream dog, I hope I can continue to do this amazing intelligent beauty justice because I work in an animal shelter (where I’ve adopted her from) and it’s heartbreaking to see the potential all the dogs would have but they haven’t had those foundations of good manners and exposure to socialisation opportunities when they were younger.
Your videos are sooo much more valuable than some of the other (not so “revolutionary”) dog training channels that YT’s algorithm gives preference to. Also, thank you for not killing us with a borage of endorsements and ads for the first fifteen minutes of every video.
This video is gold. Honestly. I've been saying for years that RU-vid is the best educational resource that has ever existed. Ken, this video ought to be compulsory viewing for the vast majority of dog owners. I've always had German Shepherds and they've all been fantastic (always reward-based training) - although the last one, from a more 'working' background (I wanted a challenge for Schutzhund) was a little too challenging with crate training at night! After an 8 year gap (children) the time is right and we've a beautiful Border Collie, 8 1/2 weeks old. I found you by searching specifically for Border Collie 'tips' - understanding just how 'interesting' this breed is in particular. I've learned a lot of new methods from your video here and I'd encourage people to be aware of the subtle point when watching it that its us that needs to modify our behaviour to get the most out of value training. So many problems are unwittingly caused by the owners. Our little one is doing a little too well perhaps. It's almost concerning. She's quickly gained confidence and has slept every night without so much of a whimper. Last night (day 6) she slept 2300-0630 and I do love to wake her by getting myself ready rather than wait for her to wake. Jan Fennell's famous methods of ignoring the dog until you're ready are a great help in keeping them calm in these respects. Question: when a dog's doing exceptionally well - do you push on a little ahead with the training or try to keep it steady and allow it to develop naturally as she grows mentally, concentrating instead on reinforcing what they do well? Now to train the kids....!
Week 1 (*relationship building*): Hand feed her breakfast to her, say her name then feed her, build value on yes. Say "yes" then reward them *be sure to use a houseline on them at all times when out of crate 1st day home, teach them to love their crate. House training starts week 1 as well. Take her out before crate, after crate, after every meal and play session and nap.
My puppy knows sit, stay, lay down, come, spin, shake ,so far. Thank you for this video. 😉 My puppy loves to go for walks and her recall training is getting better and better. I use positive reinforcement to train my dogs.😋 I am sooo proud of Zara, my pup.😁
I got my puppy Nala 8 weeks ago she’s 16 weeks today. We have been following your methods from day 1 and she’s doing so well . Thank you McCann dogs . I’m so proud of her and your advice Has been invaluable as she was our families first dog so it was new for both us and her .
Thank you!! This was SO helpful! Love the week-by-week and step-by-step details! We're picking up our 8 week old puppy this weekend and will start using so much of your training in the coming weeks and months.
I’m getting my baby Yorkie in 26 days! I am so excited, and I wanted to thank you for your help! I really want to make sure she can be disciplined but also feel the love from my husband and I!
Oh my gosh! I am so happy to have your your RU-vid channel. We are bringing home our first pup ever, and you have made it seems so much easier than I was expecting. I can not thank you enough for the delight we will have to bring this pup home. I just wish you lived closer. I have started a journal for her with all of your instructions and things we will need. Again Thank you!
I brought mine home on Saturday, she's an absolute joy and I'm convinced this channel's advice has been the main reason it has been so enjoyable! Enjoy your new puppy, and good luck!
Just got a 8 week old pup 3 days agi, he'll be a gigantic boi so I want to make sure he is friendly, happy and well trained. He's already met a few dogs and people, I take him everywhere I go. This video will surely help get the basics down, thank you!
I’m trying to adopt a new puppy and I really want to train it well, this will be my first dog ever and I’m so excited but also a little nervous. Thank you for this helpful video!
MØCĦĪ Congrats! I got my puppy this week his name is Iroh and he is so cute and good even though of course it is hard work watching and training him, but I love him so much
@@gabrielacorbettmills9018 I'm so happy 😊 cuz I'm adopting it tommorow morning! 🤗 And I'm going name him Henry. Iroh is a very unique name. And I love it.
That observation that at 9 weeks old they start having more energy and want to explore more was so spot on! I initially thought I had made some kind of mistake and now my puppy just wants to get into everything.
When my dog was a puppy training sit he would randomly come and sit to get treats 😂 like on the walk sit I got him when I was 7 I’m 20 now he’s an old boy :)
I love all of your training videos. We are adopting a 6 month old Patterdale Terrier tomorrow so I have to adapt your methods as she has not had any training and has never lived in a house. So we are in for a lot of work but also a lot of fun.
I'm saving this playlist. I'm getting a longhaired chihuahua puppy in May (she was just born a week ago). I've been waiting for a puppy for over a year now! Now that she's actually born, my Rory is going to be super spoiled and I can't wait. The next couple of months is going to be absolute torture to me lol
Your a freiken Godsend. Like 4 real. I guess I messed up for the first two days but you are really helping me out here. Ty so much !! Last time I adopted a dog they were an adult already. So this puppy thing is new to me.
Thank you so much for these amazing videos. I’ve had puppies before but it’s been more challenging since I am older with mobility issues. We had a trainer but due to the covid19 classes were halted after the first one. I thought I remembered everything from 7 yrs. ago but have found myself forgetting and becoming extremely frustrated. These videos are helping me so much and feel much more relaxed about the training. Your training methods are the same as my trainer which makes it easier for all. Thank You again and stay healthy! From California 😷🐾
@Towncrafter Me too. I’m 77 with a new puppy. Training is going great. I’ve only had her for 3 weeks. She knows her name, Come, Sit, Down, and we are working on Stay. Great advice on this channel.
Wow, amazing video. That was a lot of valuable lessons in a (much appreciated) organized format. Thank you for that, I've been watching a lot of dog training videos and this one really stands out.
Thank you, this is excellent advice. So many people (trainers included) forget the importance of meal time. Once I've completed hand feeding and basic obedience, I like to scatter some kibble across the floor, first one way then the other. This makes meals a game to gain a bit of coordination in hunting and, pointing to missed kibbles, seems to train human hand signals as important. Dogs love the game and it slows food intake.
As a first-time dog owner, your channel has been a lifesaver! However, I would really find it helpful to know a schedule or timeline for what skills I can/should be working on at what ages as he gets older. Do you have a document or a video somewhere that has rough ages with what skills they should be able to learn (like a kids’ developmental milestones chart)? Thanks!
Getting a GSD puppy in a few months and I haven't done the puppy thing in a long while. About 7 years! This video will help me tremendously! Thank you!
This is what I was looking for. There’s plenty of puppy training videos, but I needed to know what do I do on day 1? How do I know if Am I behind? What should I be accomplishing and when? Thanks a lot!
My Mom and i havent had a puppy in 18 years but since recently losing our two 15 year old dogs 2 weeks apart, she's decided to get a puppy. We pick her up later today actually and asked me to watch this video.
I got my 7 month old miniature poodle 🐩 he is very trimmed and shakes is not housebroken I don’t think he was worked with I just want to give him the best life 🐩
Excellent training schedule for all new puppy owners. Clear & concise instructions for immediate training issues & future proofing. Loaded with illuminating insights to help new owners understand how their puppy views the world. Essential viewing. Many thanks
Goodness!! I wish I had come across this sooner! I got my first puppy a few weeks ago and I had zero idea of what to do. Potty training was a nightmare, teaching her to not bite felt like it was just taking AGES but then I came across your channel and now I have training set up for the foreseeable future lol I have a lot of work to do! But I’m so thankful to have some kind of direction now❤️❤️
Got my puppy at 7 weeks he is now 12 weeks hes doing awesome. He is bot having very many accidents. Goes potty on command. Sits, lays down, shakes hand, rolls over, spins, and leaves it. He listens when he gets distracted. Walks in a leash and harness very well. Ive been working with him daily at least 2 hours per day. He is doing so well! Lots of dedication.
McCann Dogs are awesome. I've watched so many of your videos for training my new puppy in lockdown and they are really helpful. The puppy's training is going brilliantly and any problem we've encountered you've had a video with loads of great advice and ideas. Thank you so much, from Kent in UK.
We had a feeling you might be looking for this specific one Raelan! 😂 Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching and commenting. Make sure you subscribe and click that bell so that you never miss another one of our bi-weekly LIVESTREAMS or weekly training videos. You never know we may have gotten next weeks video right too, just the one you've been searching for all week 🙂 Happy Training! ~ Dan
I wish I knew this earlier, my puppy is 4 months old and is super hyper and active, I got her when she was 3 months. Training her has been a big task, especially since she is accustomed to a few things. She also nibbles and bites a lot which is not good at all since 6/10 times she can bite a bit too hard. Hope I can train her to be calm and obey commands soon, but it's starting to feel hopeless.
I completely froze up and succumbed to not being able to balance work and life, now my puppy is 17 weeks old and growing more unruly by the day. I really hope I can intervene now and improve my ways while I still can
I am following your video to get ready to train my lab.. he will be 8weeks next month.. wish me luck so that i can train him well and keep him happy and healthy 😊
I'm picking up my 1st puppy in ten days! ^-^ I'm naming her Lovie; she is an American Pitbull cross. Setting her up for success has been my #1 priority in preparing for her arrival; thank you for making this video! I am so grateful for this channel!
We're behind 14 weeks old and we're struggling. Sits and waits for her food until we say ok but that's about it. Just found your channel - now we play catch-up!
Thank you! I found this really helpful and clear. We are picking up our puppy in 2days and you helped me to feel hopeful that we'll be able to train him. :-)
@@lanevea oh that’s unfortunate. It is A LOT of work so I can’t blame you but I’m holding out for as long as I can too. Hopefully by 6-7 months he calms down a bit and isn’t as crazy. What breed was your dog if you don’t mind me asking?
Okay, so I've read and watched so much on puppy training and thought I was pretty much there. SO many things you mentioned other people haven't, such great little tips people would just forget! The constant name use in a positive way is something I never even thought about, instead would've been using the name to tell him off instead. Time to watch ALL your videos now. Thank you so so much for helping train owners better 😂🎉
Our family is in eagerly awaiting a rottweiler puppy in June. Your videos are quite informational and we plan on using your tutorials for training. Can't wait to start this journey as a dog mommy. 🤗
I rescued a German shepherd from the side of the road he's only a month old now was a week or two old when I found him and I don't know how to start getting him to listen 😅 help
We adopted our puppy from a shelter yesterday and they don't know how old he is, but we're treating "8 weeks old" like "Week 1" and carrying on from there. So far he's very comfortable with his crate! That is our #1 success so far! No whining, crying, pacing or anything- he sleeps very soundly. He's pretty good getting handles but tries to be mouthy- fortunately he loves his bone and we can always give that to him to distract those teeth. Potty training is pretty good too. I think our weakest area is "YES!" and his name. He doesn't quite know what those mean yet. Thank you so so much for all of your videos! I've been binge-watching them for 2 months now in preparation for this little fella.
Great video! Will you be doing one for older puppies? Our 6 month old bull terrier doing quite well at home but distractions are tough and recall is really tough with their very inquisitive brains.
I HAVE to know: have you guys ever received a comment saying that the barking at the beginning of every video (knowing that the person watching is likely a puppy/dog owner) makes our dogs act out before we've even begun to watch/learn??? I just can't understand why you would leave that in the intros! Honestly! On the positive side, although I haven't watched many of your videos -for this exact reason, the few I have watched have been helpful. Thanks!
Anyone can handle/touch/lift/squeeze my dog 100% without him even reacting. He's used to being handled, since I've been training/subjecting him to it since he was 8 weeks old. I have also taught him the command "still", and when I say "still" he sits/lies/stands absolutely still until I say "yes"!
That’s really exciting, Hailey Lo! I like your attitude to learn as much as you can even before your pup comes home. That’s a great recipe for success. Enjoy the process, Happy Training! ~Ken
Only three more sleeps and our cockapoo puppy will arrive. I have been very busy watching your videos. I love the way you train and will be using your training guides from day one.
I had a Pug & almost every day for 7 YEARS I tried to teach him to shake. After the seven year mark, out of the blue, he reached out an shook. I started jumping up & down and squealing. It almost scared him to death.
What do you do when puppy goes straight for plants or grass and pulls it out every time she goes outside. She knows leave it, and responds 100% however goes right back to the plant when she is done.
I got a 8 week old puppy rn and she is crate trained, can sit and I’m working on her name and stay cus that’s what I need most but I’ll definitely use a lot of these methods and plan for the more advanced stuff
Hi Ken wow never knew this and I think u r probably the first to explain this so conscience and clear thank you so much for taking your time to do this
Hi this is Bonnie again. I picked my 9 week old poodle puppy Willow yesterday. She weighs about 3 lbs. I made a huge mistake 9f putting her in her private bathroom BEFORE wearing her out. She howled and cried until I closed the bathroom door instead of her being able to see thru gate. She immediately stopped. After 15 minutes I found her in her bed. So I picked her up praised her and played, worked at potty training her. It worked. So I had to get her to relax in bedtime small crate. Dud this by putting crate in bed with me at eye level she dud well. BUT MY BIGGEST CONCERN IS SHE'S STARTED CHEWING AND SCRATCHING AT HERSELF. I SEE NO EVIDENCE OF FLEES OR HOT SPOTS. ABOVE HER TAIL, INSIDE OF LEFT THIGH AND LICKING HER LEFT PAW AND SCRATCHING HER LEFT EAR!!! She didn't start this until after eating same food breeder has had her on and a lot of toy playing and running etc. Her toys are crackle soft, tiny rawhide chew bone, tug toy. The toys are made in China but the breeder used same. At first (3 hours) I kept her confined to her bathroom (guest) but then I let her have access to living room (carpet) and hallway (tile) she LOVES chasing me down hallway and into living room back and forth about 5 times as fast as she can. She fetches and retrieves!!! But the CHEWING I'm concerned about. I will contact breeder to see if chewing is something she'd observed. I'm wondering about crackle toys or my carpet (Should shampoo it) ?) as being culprits? PLEASE ADVISE! Your site IS appreciated! Willow will appreciate you, too. Thanks
Great!!!! vid, very informative and an enjoy to watch those little pups lol!!….. I always find useful tips even though my dogs are adults now and to carry on training is fun, not just for me but for the dogs too. x
I am a new scriber and I've been going through your videos enjoying them very much we have 2 9 week old puppies coming home on the 22nd the fun begins.
Great video Ken, we're getting our golden retriever pup in 4 weeks and I'm trying to do my homework before she arrives. Tomorrow I'll watch it again and take notes 👍 thanks again for creating such great videos. Shame I don't live in the US as I'd be signing up to your school. Cheers Nigel
Hi there, Nigel! I love the effort you’re putting into preparation for your new puppy! Even if you lived in the U.S. you’d still have to drive north to Canada to train at our facility. No matter where you are though, we do offer online training and we will have a new product that may be right for you in the VERY near future😉 Happy Training ~Ken
