There are two ways to work on your dog listening around distractions, but many people only learn one. The first way is to get your dog into a controlled position like a sit or down, and introduce distractions. We take it to the next level and do things differently! Let’s face it; there are not too many bunnies who are going to ask us to get our dogs into a sit before they run across the path. We need our dogs to listen no matter what and no matter how far away they are from us, and the timing of our distractions in training is critical to set our dogs up for success.
In the episode you'll hear:
• About the two reasons a dog would listen at a distance.
• The way we grow massive confidence in our dog’s ability to listen.
• About looking at what you do if your dog makes a mistake.
• How games grow responses and enthusiasm for dogs.
• What playing video games has to do with dog training.
• The importance of controlling the distraction and not the dog.
• About growing a dog’s skills in layers and the fun way to practice.
• How to really use distractions in your dog training.
• Why you always want to be on Team Distraction to get to Team Distance.
• What to play with your dog this week in prep for next-level listening games.

Are you guys going to open Recallers any time soon? Susan, I love the way you explain things. When watching a video at work, my colleagues think I'm watching a stand up comedian because sometimes I laugh so hard

I just loved this and last week's videos! I tandem watched them:). Win and I reviewed our controlled behaviors (sit, down stand) and I looked at all of the key areas you spoke about in Part 1. Still work to do. Also, Win and I are heading back to the drawing board and working through the controllable distractions with crate games! Oh, yes, I can see many on this list that will challenge the two of us! I'll share some of our videos over on Recallers. Great videos and wonderful series. Thank you.

You are really honing in a problem many of us find extremely difficult to handle, so thank, thank you, thank you. Just for the dimmer bulbs like myself, could you expand a little bit more on how to manage a distraction outside when our dog makes a mistake. You started to talk about it in the video but I lost clarity on what we should do in those cases. Thank you .💗

Thank you Susan for another great episode. I’m trying to think of good ways to be on team distraction with my German pointers. Right now there are a lot of grouse sitting next to the road. They fly away when they see you, but do you think it’s a good idea to do a short retrieve just on the spot where the bird left from? Do you think that will transfer to them listenting more on the stop signal or turn signal when they are hunting on a distance from you?

My dog, who is turning 7 next month, has gotten crazy for my neighbors cats. It is becoming a nightmare when we are having agility practice. And to make matters worse, the neighbors now have chickens. Right now they're small and in a coop. But if they let them out of the coop and they go over our fence they could come to a very bad end. I have English Springer Spaniels with high prey drive.

as always, love your work Team. I find it interesting that my partner seems to have better "attraction" with Charlie than I do. She can hold his attention longer with bigger distractions. I have been told I am the weak link /sad face.

Hi, I have watched a few of your videos and would like to ask a question. I am in my 70s and I have owned, trained and bred Labrador Retrievers, and Standard Poodles. Back in the days I did a lot of competition obedience and did quite well with both breeds. I now own a Golden Doodle who as a puppy would chase balls etc and play tug. But since she turned about 18 months old it has been difficult to get her totally interested in playin tug for more than a min and a half. I have thrown balls at short distances as well as our hallway and back yard. Sometimes she zooms to get it, picks it up and trots back, or zooms to get it, sniffs at it and won’t pick it up yo bring back. I have tried giving her treats when she brings it back at a short distance, but then she would drop it before she got to me. I never rewarded her for that wrong behavior I can’t seem to find her love trigger point. Do you think the crate games will help. I know that throwing balls around her later won’t mean squat, nor any of her other toya I have got to help with engagement. She really likes to play with me, literally. Jumps up in the air while playing and grabbing at my arm. She never bites … lol, I scream if she does, and it freaks her out. How do I get a toy to engage her? I have moved toys right in front of her very quickly to get her excited, but you can almost see her bored yawn. She will be 3 come August. She does pretty darn good with basic obedience. Recall is great in class. Once I had her in a small dog park at a camp site. Just her and one other dog and were having fun when another dog wanted to come in. The gal caller dog and they came. I called my dog and all she wanted to do was run up to the fence and smell the other dog. I was so embarrassed. Where should I start?

Diana Clarkson Susan's Recallers program is AMAZING. You should def check it out :) in the meantime set your dood up to be successful & do NOT call her unless you are sure she will come. If it's a safety concern keep her on lead. I'd also start retraining recall with a new word as you may have accidentally poisoned the old cue. I bet you'll comment back in a few months that you did recallers & now have a reliable recall. Good luck! 😘

Do you mean that each time we want to work at distance, we’ve got to carry a crate?
@karschier6246
@karschier6246 2 года назад
I honestly do not understand how you drew that conclusion from this video.

Crate Games is the foundational game for working at a distance. Susan's Crate Games is an excellent program that shares the steps with you. I'm not an expert, but you can start with the crate, inside in different rooms until you have lots of success in these environments both close and at a distance from your dog. Then you can take the crate out to the backyard or patio and continue with your close distance games there, working toward distance in the crate. Then when you have lots of success with that, you can shift the "starting position" where you ask for a controlled position while working on a Hot Zone (mat) starting in the house and then moving to the lawn. The process is built on your dog's understanding of the games and growing the game slowly as your dog starts to understand and respond successfully. Personally, I wouldn't move to any uncontrolled environments until I've gotten my dog to understand the criteria and respond successfully 80% or better in the house or fenced-in backyard. So, no, you don't have to carry your crate around with you. Great question, though.

I'm really struggling with my 10 month old Aussie (Sadie), who I got 3 weeks ago, with fear. First of all, I live in an apt in downtown SF. Sadie is terrified of men, deep and loud voices/ noises, skateboards, bikes, ect. So my problem lies with what to do when taking her out to the bathroom or on a walk when right as we step outside her triggers are everywhere? Most of the time it's hard for her to go potty because shes so worried with people walking by or startled by any noises and wants to just run back inside. Same as going on a walk she won't go any further than a couple steps before she's ready to go back home. She is really confident around dogs, so I was thinking walking around the city with her dog friend would maybe help. If anyone has any help it would be greatly appreciated I'm really scared of it getting worst. Thanks
