Quit ruining everyone's immersion with your sunglasses! No amount of quality gear makes up for sunglasses. Co. D, shares how accessible, affordable, and practical period correct eye wear is.
Improve your impression today by visiting this link to Townsend's period correct eye wear: www.townsends.u...
Remember, the primary users of sunglasses (which were usually tinted green) during the 19th century were people suffering from light sensitivity due to syphilis.

One young boy came home from reenactment, cried and said to his mom: "Mom! My face is a farb!".

Honestly my period correct frames are an original frame from 1868 but the style of the frames dated back to at least 1855. And they're far more comfortable to me then my modern day glasses or even some of the reproductions out there.

the private on the right, his glasses are 1740s-1790s style but I supposed some where still in use by the war of rebellion.

The wrap around ear pieces, as I understand it, are not Civil War period correct. But I use those same frames.

I wore those same frames for 6 years and it would cause me to bleed behind the ears and on the bridge of my nose, but they look great! Great series!

Pretty sure the curve of the frame isn’t authentic, they’d be straight

Wrap behind ear frames are post war so those are not accurate.

Um...I like Townsends BUT do not use a reenactor's sutler's catalog as a source for period correct items. Instead look at originals and then compare them to what is available and choose the one that is closest. OR Isn't there an historic eyeware company that sells original frames cases, etc.?

Also- since the average ACW soldier was only 5'5", all reenactors over 5' 7 or so should have surgery to remove bone/flesh from their legs to make themselves shorter......

can you use a quilted sleeve/pocket/case to store your glasses in? made of the appropriate material of course.
@CompanyD2ndUSSS

That's a great idea! Especially a good idea if you are careful with you gear.

There are a number of period correct cases available or ifyou are handy can make yourself. Case can be tin "coffin" type, paste board sleeves or choose something that might be passable as period homemade/fieldmade - e.g. a leather sleave with a wooden stiffener. The main thing is period glasses, even new rerpoductions, can be fragile and there are any number of ways to break or lose them. I'm glad I can get by with no glasses and only need reading glasses, but I have 3 period pairs to choose from.

How important is it to have all my buttons on my shell jacket, since I'm doing a Confederate impression, I have two buttons that fell off the jacket, because I can't see very good, and I want to portray as accurately as possible. So do I need every single button on the shell jacket or if I'm missing a few is it still ok?

This is a tough one. It depends on your impression. If you're on campaign or fresh from battle, it makes sense to have worn equipment. I appreciate worn/damaged uniforms but they don't fit every impression. I'd see what your unit has to say. In the meantime, have some extra buttons on hand in case you need them for a parade or formal event. I hope that helps.

Does anyone know the etymology of "farb," is it an acronym?
@CompanyD2ndUSSS
@CompanyD2ndUSSS 3 года назад
It has a few origins in popular reenacting culture. Probably the most common definition comes from "Far be" it from accurate.

I have been looking into getting a pair of peroid correct glasses I'm going to have to farb it and put in sunglass lens as I have sensitive eyes and need the tinted lenes I'm fortunate that I wear contacts and they are just fine but I have to wear the sunglasses off and on so getting something loser to peroid correct is my goal
@CompanyD2ndUSSS

Period sunglasses were a thing. They were fashionable among the upper classes and used for medical reasons. It's the reenactors wearing oakleys and raybans that drive us nuts.

I reenact with CAL 100 2nd in CA. I got 2 eyeglasses from Historic Eye Wear company, one octagon and one large oval. I love them and wear them all the time. I get lots of comments from folks, they are unique. I do have light sensitive lenses so they do get darker which is still period correct.

where did the term "farb," come from?
@CompanyD2ndUSSS
@CompanyD2ndUSSS 6 лет назад
"FARB" is one of those terms that no one in the reenacting community really knows where it comes from, but is widely used. You can ask 10 different people and I guarantee you would get 10 different answers though I am sure most would agree it's an acronym of some sort along the lines of "Far be it from authentic."
@swatchaplain
@swatchaplain 6 лет назад
Two schools of thought: 1: FARB stands for Foolish And Ridicules Buffoon, like showing up to an event in polyester and Nike tennis shoes, or when called out on being FARB, someone might respond: "FAR Be it for me to question......" I can't vouch for the accuracy of either one of these, but this is how it was explained to me years ago.

There exists a letter dated 1 April 1863 from an A.R. Crawford in the 76th Illinois Infantry, Co D, that uses the phrase, "fallacious accoutrements & reprehensible baggage," in description of six children posing in phony military gear during a sham reenactment that took place during the actual Civil War. Many point to this phrase as the origin of the word, citing "farb" as an acronym. Source: Wicktionary

I've heard that the term is an acyronym for "Fast And Researchless Buying" meaning exactly what it says...guys that don't take the effort to be historically accuractly. Instead they mismatch uniform pieces in an effort to be "Cool".
