The best thing about Senor Pink's backstory is that Oda never even planned to include it. He gives backstories to all of his characters as a general rule of writing whether they get featured or not. In Senor Pink's case, Oda's editor was so moved that he insisted they include it. So what we have are Oda's offcuts outclassing the writing of major franchise protagonists.

It’s a great practice for writers: even if the audience never sees your characters exact “why”, it exists, and it motivates them in your writing. The audience feels it even if they never see it. Probably a huge reason people find Oda’s characters so compelling. Great to see you here @GrandLineReview! 😊🏴‍☠️

Sometimes? Way too often in the last few chapters 😭 SPOILERS last chapter . . . . That "Kuma will always be on your side" especially got me, because my father, who died last year, was the same... he wasn't even a good person or anything, but when it came to my brother or me, something switched in him and he would have done everything for us. Fitting for what they talked in this video, about connecting with characters you understand.

Losing the fight and watching your entire crew die from poison while recording one last song. Losing your body and reviving as a skeleton. Losing your shadow so you no longer can go back to Laboon. Being scared to death, but still going back to Thriller bark trying to get your shadow back. But what is the most heartbreaking is... Brook cannot age. Which means somewhere in the future. He will play "Bink's Sake" on the graves of his crewmembers once again..

True. Clinging for his life only for Laboon for 50 years is just so hard to take. He had to be funny to keep his conscience so he never cry or be sad. But when Luffy offered a spot in his crew, he melted. Boy just thinking about Brook, Senor Pink and Kuma makes me a bitch.

What I love about OP is that, Oda isn't afraid to show the ugly side of their characters, the broken sides, the non attractive sides, it adds to their character and it shows that not every character has to be the perfect hot bad guy with a broken backstory that didn't really change much about them except making them depressed

Senior Pink's back story hit me so hard, my wife and I have suffered multiple miscarriage's, as well as a still birth. The fact Oda was able to write such a hard hitting backstory for such a minor character is so crazy to me, that's why he's the best.

Miscarriages are such a common and difficult situation that we rarely talk about 😔 I know so many people personally who have experienced it but it seems like it can be really isolating if we never speak about it with others. Oda does have a gift for writting very human and down to earth characters and moments. Something ironically sweet and endearing about how nearing his last moments, all Whitebeard wanted was to know if his kids thought he was a good father. The World's Strongest Man who is seemingly a stoic wall of muscle and might is humanized throught the entire ark as a loving devoted father.

This is a really fantastic conversation about the ideas of how fictional characters are written and why we feel so emotionally attached to them. I really love the conversation especially about One Piece and how Oda had humanised his characters. He gave them flaws and strengths and weaknesses. But also gave them moments of vulnerabilities that are relatable. It’s probably the reason why One Piece had become my favourite series, it has the capability to make me cry and relate to these characters on a human level. Someone like Sanji for example is one of the strongest along side Zoro and Luffy. He is the typical simp and hot headed and foul mouthed character but then we reach Whole Cake and suddenly we are witnessing this strong guy break down and cry in front of Luffy asking for his help much like how Nami or Robin did. Oda writes his characters with backstories that makes the reader understand the reason behind their actions and ideals.

The thing is, too, that we also love stoic characters.. but only because we know what's going on UNDERNEATH the stoicism. A lot of people mocked old-school Kratos as "he just yells a lot and is angry and kills people." But those of us who were there from the start saw from the very beginning of the first game a vulnerable man who was just hurting and desperate to make the pain go away. As a result, we were all-in for when his internal torment became externalized in his rampage where he started to hurt everyone around him, even those who didn't deserve it. We didn't always approve, but we were there for the ride because we had seen that vulnerable, fragile aspect of his character and what had been done to wrong him so much that he would react that way. It's the same with characters like Guts in Berserk. On the surface he's just really angry and slaughters monsters, but if you actually read the series and realize "oh geez, this poor bastard", and you see how much vulnerability he has that is being kept buried beneath a stoic and angry front - and then the moments that cut right through that front and bring the man back to his knees all over again - then you can't help but love the man even more. In other words, it's fine to have a character who is, on the surface (and almost always in relation to the perspective of the characters within that world) a stoic and hardened individual who never shows weakness. But if you do that then you need to let us, the readers, know what's going on underneath all of that in some capacity.
@FrameOfMindBros
@FrameOfMindBros 8 месяцев назад
Well said! It really seems like the degree to which you can connect the audience to the character’s pain, the more we’ll be able to connect with them in spite of their stoic demeanour. Just like all traits, stoic isn’t good or bad but a tool that can be used well or poorly 👍

(LONG essay ahead) I'm glad this came into my feed. I genuinely believe that whether you're writing a character who is the nastiest villain or the sweetest marshmellow ever- the best way to make them interesting is to show how they deal (or dealt) with struggle or being challenged. These challenges could be environmental or personal or both. It can be overtly fantastical or very mundane. Whatever the scale of the struggle, the most interesting thing will be how it affects the character(s) and their progress. To add to this- the reward(s) they get for overcoming said challenge should feel earned. You want them to feel relatable? Don't make the solution to their problem feel so "easy" or, worse, undeserved. For example- if your character doesn't have friends for whatever reason, don't just suddenly give them friends and consider that development. Consider the reasons why they're friendless and what it would take for someone like that to become friends with the rest of your cast. If someone, say, has no friends because they're incredibly rude then make that a struggle they need to work with. And this can tie into the rest of the cast- how would your characters handle someone so rude and would they even want be friends? So many potential dimensions! It's these kinds of struggles that I feel is missing from my least favorite trope in Anime- the one-dimensional "nice person." I'm talking the anime character (usually female) who is kind to everyone, loved by everyone, and they will constantly recieve praise for how wonderful they are. These characters have flaws, but they're flaws that attract more of that "I need to take care of them/support them" reaction from the audience (being awkward/shy or quirky.) They can't have flaws that will make them too unappealing. The flaws rarely hurt the character, and when they do it's not enough to feel like a struggle. Heck, sometimes they're always somehow the most tolerant person in the story, even to characters who may not deserve it. Why? Because they're NICE. If there's really a problem, they just need a little time to think or be sad about it, before they overcome the flaw and go back to being "nice." This goes back to my point about easy solutions. This particular trope irritates me because rarely do writers show just how HARD it is to be kind. No one is that levels of "nice" without the struggles that come with it. It goes back to your point about how a one-dimensional character can feel off because it's like they're wearing a mask of an overt personality trope. One of the few times I've seen this trope done right is Tohru Honda from Fruits Basket. We see where her kindness comes from and we see said kindness be challenged, even by characters who do like her. Best of all, she does falter and she does have moments where she's scared or resentful. And there's no easy solution to what she goes through. Watching someone so kind struggle like this? It makes you sympathize with her and want to see her get that happy ending. That's a good "nice" character. Anyway- apologize for the mini-essay. I'm just a big fan of character writing and have very strong opiniona on the topic. Thanks for reading if you did!

She (in this context) would still be as great a character.

A few things that I would like to add about Señor Pink moments. The setup when we first met him, we got curious about him. Because women flocked to him, despite his he looks and how he cold he was to them. It made you wonder Why people still fawn over this guy. And I think it's important to point out that Oda sensei completed Señor Pink's very impactful backstory with just 5 manga pages. That makes so many people around r the world cried for him.

I know someone that hates flawed characters and only likes Mary Sues/Gary Stu's, actively, doesn't like dumb characters, characters that struggle with anything from within them, dislikes drama, and essentially only wants characters that are as close to perfection to be in shows, with any conflict coming from the outside, if the person happens to like a flawed character, only focuses on the stuff the person likes and conveniently ignores any flaw, and has no interest towards finding if there's anything behind the mask of flawed characters. It is, incredibly hard to interact with this person.

Hey, Curtis and Jordan! I found this randomly on my feed and GLAD I CLICKED! Mr. Pink in the thumbnail was a genius design decision. All my favorite topics (psychology, movies, anime, inner work) with hosts who are incredibly intelligent, eloquent, and emotionally mature all on one place?! Subscribed! When Curtis talked about his wish for some sort of regimented workout for psychological introspection that also encourages real-life application, I think many men's support groups can be considered to be like "workout gyms". I was a part of the Mankind Project (MKP) for many years, and their weekly I-Group meetings were like having a workout group getting together. How these groups run their meetings can vary, but there's a pretty standard protocol for each type of "workout" that's done. For example, if a person is triggered with another person in the group, there's a process called "clearings" that's facilitated by the leader that night. One of the main parts of the meeting is for someone to do "carpet work" where they do a deep dive into something they need to work on, and the rest of the group helps facilitate the process. It's incredibly powerful, and it's kind of like having the whole gym help out this one guy try to achieve his goal of benching 500 lbs. They also take the concept of safe containers very seriously, so I appreciated Curtis's explanation of how important SAFE containers are. I had taken many of these processes that are practiced in I-Groups to heart and applied them into my regular life, and this completely changed me in many ways. It truly saved my life, but MKP and I-Groups are not perfect either. That's a whole other bag of worms, but I had to at least get the word out there. I'm amped for more content from you guys, and cheers for greater success for your channel!

This debate hit me deep with the psycho-analysis and relevance of a characters journey to deal with their traumas and emotional distress, especially when you talked about Nami and Robin. It's especially common with those kind of strong characters even in real world known to appear independent and capable to solve any problem by themselves, that struggle the most to drop their mask and openly ask for assistance when they are in a desperate situation. It's such an important message you've highlighted. No matter how strong or capable you are, everyone bears a weakness or deeply rooted issue that they cannot resolve and deal with themselves and it's completely fine to admit it to yourself and ask for help. I believe many naturally connect and relate to such characters already but rarely use those portrayed moments of weakness as inspiration to become weak and vulnerable themselves at times and ask for help when truly needed, because that first step is so hard to do. Great content from both of you and an amazing message you send for those who may struggle believing that they need to be a "flawless good character" as Galadriel when in truth embracing and acknowledging your helplessness will truly bring your biggest strength out.
@AnyMEmdq
@AnyMEmdq 8 месяцев назад
Ok, I wrote a whole comment (mostly ranting about how Galadriel SUCKS in RoP, and how it hurts me because I *love* everything Middle-Earth), I had a power loss and it disappeared. I won't be able to recreate it, so I'll leave the rant aside, and just say that you gained a new subscriber with this, and you can credit Señor Pink, because seeing in the thumbnail a comparison between one of the unlikely best side characters I've ever read and the impossibly worst main character I've ever seen tickled my morbid curiosity. But so that you don't think I'm underselling yourself, I came for the best hardboiled man, but I'm subbing because I love this: Two professionals of things I really do care about (storytelling and getting to know myself better) nerding about stories I love (or hate, fuck Amazon destroying Tolkien), and tracing parallels between them and the process and symbolism behind those scenes that are etched into my brain. Not only do I get to re-experience them, I'm also provided with little details and appreciations that help me widen my own perspective, and that's fucking cool. So thank you for this, and since you mentioned him, let's quote Arnold, "I'll be back!"

Ok, I need to do a little of the Galadriel rant, because just thinking about it makes me angry. Let's be generous and assumed the writers of the show have watched Peter Jackson's movies (because I know they haven't read anything Tolkien wrote). Let me start by saying that Kate Blanchett's portrayal of Galadriel was top notch! But there are two interactions of what was basically a glorified cameo of her in the span of the three movies: 1. Boromir saying her gaze made him feel uncomfortable, as if she was looking into his soul (and Sean Bean's portrayal of Boromir was also phenomenal). 2. Her reaction when Frodo offers her the ring. With those two scenes, we get to know A LOT about her. She is powerful, at a glance even more powerful than what we've seen so far of Gandalf. If you cross her, you are not leaving unscathed, no matter who you are. She is wise, call it magic or intuition, she sees things others don't, she reads you and if she so desires, she can make you know she is reading you (as nobody else felt that discomfort, only Boromir). And it makes sense, not only is she naturally extremely powerful, she also has one of the three rings, and she's lived hundreds of lifetimes, potentially experiencing everything there is to experience. But she is weak, she is vulnerable. As soon as Frodo offered her the One Ring, she almost slipped into a spiral temptation, even if she herself had foreseen it happening. She is flawed, dangerous against the enemy, yes, but also towards the friend if she slips once. So she tested herself, and seeing what could eventually happen, she immediately decided to leave for the Grey Havens, to remove that potential threat from the equation. She is strong. That's more character depth and development in what? 1/10 the screentime Morfydd Clark had? BTW, I'm not blaming (solely) the actress here, most of the blame falls onto the writers and director. FFS, was it so hard to depict her that way? And since I mentioned Boromir, let me dive a bit into one of my favourite characters. He is a regular human, not even a Númenórean. With his 40 years, less half the age of Aragorn, but probably more than half of his potential lifespan, he shows many flaws: Proud and insecure (which could just as easily be phrased as "Proud because of being insecure"), almost narcissistic when it comes to his own capabilities and prowess, envious, hot-headed. But when he falls it's to the same weakness that would've taken Galadriel. Basically a goddess, at least from a mere mortal's perspective, she would've fallen, possibly even faster had she spent so much time with Frodo as Boromir did, to the same flaw that took a normal guy. And that's all I need from her. That one flaw is more than enough to make her an amazing character, as her lifespan and obvious experience (even if you've only seen her in the movies, you know she has that experience already) are the perfect soup for her to have overcome everything else. We don't need her to be as flawed as Boromir, we just need her to be believable. And no, being perfect in every possible way from the get go, fuck, even becoming perfect at the end, is not believable. And yes, Nami and Robin are PERFECT comparisons. If you've read/watched One Piece and you have two braincells left, you don't doubt for a second they are incredible strong people. And they are FLAWED! They are as damaged as you might want (in fact, there's a conversation between Robin and Brook in Wano that I won't spoil here, because it's fairly recent (chapter 1020/1021) that illustrates in potentially the saddest way possible how damaged and scarred Robin (and Brook) is). "Oh, but they are not the main character," I was told once. The main character, Luffy, not only is flawed, but he wears those flaws in his sleeve, almost as a badge of honour, and he has no issues whatsoever literally listing his MANY shortcomings. And that only makes him a better character, nuanced and layered. He cries and breaks, he feels desperation and anger, and he yells that in every direction. And we can't have enough of it.

I always mirroed with Elliot from Mr. Robot since the first episode. Skilled at programming, black clothes, didn't like people or social activities, flawed and depressed. When Elliot had the (spoilers) forced therapy session in S04E07, and he discovered/remembered that he was sexually abused by his father when he was a child, I instantly had the same ephiphany that I was also abused by my father in the exact same way. That hitted me like a fucking truck and I couldn't do anything for about 2 weeks, then it took another year for me to fully understand, accept, and re-learn to live with this "new" truth that was uncovered. Mirroring with fictional characters is that powerful, it changed my life and I'm profoundly grateful for Sam Esmail to bring Mr. Robot to life.

The Enies Lobby scene with Robin makes it more impactful when you consider who ultimately fires the first shot to declare war on the government. While Luffy is the one who gave the order, the first shot was done by Ussop. A known coward yet albeit logical person with no powers. Just his gadgets and toys essentially. A weak person like him is willing to fight the world for his friends. If it was Luffy, it'd be expected. He's effectively a super hero in terms of strength, he can do it. A more human character like Ussop is far more effective in comparison.

I mean I knew this, we all knew this, but sometimes someone just has to come along and say it like it is. I've always loved One Piece. I've been reading it since 2002-2003. Anytime anyone has asked, I've said its my favorite. Like, it's Lord of the Rings and One Piece. Top Tier world-building, long form journeys with a focus on friendship and internal emotional development that results in external life transformations. Not one character in One Piece is filler, not one is wasted. Every single person adds something to the story, even the background characters. Masterclass in showing not telling. Masterclass in pacing, balance, and power-scaling.

Robin hit so hard to home; seeing a character who literally looks like me under the layers of white grease paint and black eyeliner, saying she wants to live, when I myself struggle with depression felt like the punch in the gut I needed honestly. The talk about Luffy listening to his friends is really good. He respects his friends wishes and dreams. On the other side there's Naruto who doesn't respect or listen to his friend's wish. He didn't really understand what happened to Sasuke and he rubs his own emotions to others. That's why their "friendship" doesn't feel real and genuine. I love Naruto as a character but the reason I love Luffy more than him is just this sole reason. I just realized it.

My most emotional plot in One Piece is in later part of series, where the truth of SMILE was told. Yasuie, the smiling faces of Ebisu's people, SAD, everything comes connect and makes me feel numb.

Staying with the topic of one piece and good characters, i think you've sums up perfectly how Eichiro Oda was able to make his fans, readers, and anime watchers connect and feel emotions for a ship. Going Merry tried to fix it self, it asked for help, and sailed to save it's crew for the final time. At the end it expresses it's regret and even gratitude. It also helps that the crew that we've connected, believes in the ship as much as they would believe their crewmates.

3:52 my boyfriend and I went to see the same counsellor. I always believed that my willingness and motivation to change is what made my sessions successful. I wanted to be better, different, and that's why it worked for me and why my boyfriend just slowly stopped talking to her.

Absolutely! If there isn’t an openness to growth, a counsellor can’t to much. Or at least things become very slow and challenging. Really important prerequisite.

@@FrameOfMindBrosI sent my counsellor a msg after watching your video. I told her how much I appreciated what she had done for me and how much she had helped me. My life did a complete 180 thanks to her ❤

Love some content that meshes expertise with appreciation of media it is remarkable how much a good author can make people care. As is it remarkable how a corporation can spawn apathy within the middle of one of the most connected with worlds of fiction. Good stuff

As you talked about Galadriel's stoicism, one character popped into my mind. Maud Pie. She's stoic in a world where everyone around her is animated and active, so the juxtaposition is played for comedy. Maud _feels_ emotions, she just isn't good at communicating them, and despite her expression rarely changing she's just as cartoonishly over-the-top as the others, just in a different way.

Great example that seems to highlight how pretty much any character trait can often work when writers are intentional about the function it serves in the story!
