Transformer 3 dark of the moon is one of my favorite movies of all time. A big part of it is nostalgia because it was the first movie I saw in theatre while I was a teenage boy. But also because the last hour of the movie is unironically awesome. It's brutal, kinda depressing and seeing giant robots being blown and ripped apart just appeals to my inner 13 year old self.
In retrospect I should have been more specific about the kind of stuff that happens in Symphogear. All the girls have to sing their own theme songs during fights to stay powered up. Main girl suplexes a spaceship. There's a giant fist print on the moon throughout the entire series. Season 3's(?) Villain is defeated in like episode 6 an they just sort of spin their wheels for 5 episodes until the plot kicks back in at the end. Every episode of season 2 has a cliffhanger that is immediately resolved within the first minute of the next episode, often with a new power that is never mentioned again. Every attack has a name and they're all awesome (Mega deth Infinity, Massacre Judge Gothel, etc) There's a part where the characters have a musical number about cooking beef stroganoff that comes out of nowhere.
You forgot the most important part. In the same episode where the main girl suplexes a spaceship, they DEMOTE A MOUNTAIN. And not like just any mountain, they demote the second tallest mountain in the world. Also, the thing you said about it being a cult hit I think might actually only be in the west because I recently found out that in Japan they have hosted concerts with the voice actors where they announced a new season at the end and they are packed. They even have a website where you can buy CDs of the character songs and Blue-Rays of the concerts, as well as an official RU-vid series. They even have an ongoing mobile game that used to have a global version that was shut down due to lack of interest. I think Symphogear has just suffered in the west due to the inherent difficulty in understanding it as you have to look at both character subtitles and song subtitles. Speaking of song subtitles, I recently rewatched the series on 9anime because Crunchyroll locked it behind a paywall, and I found that every season after season one also has a chibi series covering the events between other major events. For example, the Symphogear G chibi has an episode where the explain where the music comes from and it is no joke formed from their subconscious, meaning that the songs reflect their views and personalities. I actually realized this organically after that one fight in season 2 episode 10(?) when a lyric references an earlier event, but it is wild that such important info was in a chibi series that Crunchyroll doesn’t even have
I get Fire Emblem Fates and Fire Emblem Warriors being on here, but I’m surprised nobody said Fire Emblem Engage. Don’t get me wrong, I like Fire Emblem Engage and I love the game’s characters; it’s just that when it comes to the game’s story, I really struggle to call it good. I believe the plot is best described as schlock (collect all the macguffins, bad guy wants to destroy world, the Fire Emblem plot of “the villain is a dragon who’s gone crazy” and twists that are really obvious). 14:21 This brings to mind my favourite anime dub, the BBC’s English dub of the first Urusei Yatsura anime’s first and third episode, which can only be described as the most British thing I’ve ever heard. Hell, British comedian and actor Matt Lucas (star of Little Britain and from the meme “Are we the baddies?”) voiced Ataru in it.
I mean honestly I don't think Fates or Engage should be considered Shlock, both have their issues writing wise but also a lot of complaints, especially about the characters, are just flat people making stuff up because they are supposed to dislike them. The stories are solid enough with good characters(Fates more then Engage) with just some iffy writing. Plus the gameplay is so good that even if you want to pretend the stories are just flat out dogshit the gameplay would still lift it out of Shloke.
I fucking LOVE the Project X Zone games, high recommend. They play good, and are just a TON of fun, and even have a moment or two of genuinely good moments. Later in 2 you have Bison complimenting the place Kazuya and Mishima work in and they get PISSED that he reduced their city to a 'good place', these two basically thugs just ROAST him.
A guilty pleasure game for me is Genshin Impact. It’s weeb trash, and it’s got that gacha gambling bs, and often is pretty cringy. But then it pulls a 180, and suddenly has really good writing, some of the greatest boss fights I’ve ever experienced, and music that literally sends chills down my spine. It’s definitely come a long way since its “lol Chinese BotW ripoff” days. It’s also got hot women.
Ayyyo, there I am ! If you guys do check out Agent Aika, the Japanese dub is good, the English Dub is terrible (in a bad way, but I think the English voice of Rie really does fit.), the show sounds amazing in German.

I think the best schlock ive seen is hands down are most Adam Sandler movies Mostly it's nostalgia but also just due to how baffling pretty much all of them are with how much is done that makes me wonder just what the hell Sandler was thinking And what makes me like these even more than some of Sandlers unironically good movies is that Adam and the actors just went with it no matter how garbage the movies end up turning out
Ok now i know what my guilty pleasure game is. It's Final fantasy 8, everything about this game is like a fever dream; The lore and the battle system was good but the dialogues were weird and the music felt ominous most of the time. And I have a love-hate relationship with squall

All I know is I think I see a huniepop girl in the thumbnail and I am totally fine with that because I need to get back to playing that game lol. Also Symphongear...... That 1 made me both happy and angry at the same time. Happy because when I was watching it I felt good we had great songs and some pretty cool fight scenes but mad because then my brain started to think logically and then my mind was getting mad at this like very angry at this premise. And of course I know that fire emblem fates has a lot of detractors but I definitely know that people also love that game despite the many many many problems it has. H*** I have a friend who straight up says that he still loves Camilla despite how much of an issue that most people have had with her lol. And I don't blame him because Camilla is still fine.
For me definitely Tales of Symphonia 2. It’s written like fan fiction and is a terrible sequel but I love so many things about the game and come back to it every once and awhile
I guess the closest thing of this category to me is Mega Man x6. It's not a good game, at all, but there's fun to come from trivialising parts of the game as Zero. It also has one of the best soundtracks of the X series. The funi dub of the original dragon ball (released after their initial dub of Z) has a bunch of issues but I still really enjoy the voice cast and performances. The best way to watch it is through the fan-made 'dragon ball recut' with the dub but with subs so you can fact-check and catch points where the dub says literally the opposite of what the subs say. Don't really care for the original Z dub since I can just watch Kai though.

I love all the characters (Especially Kumagawa) and I think while I agree with many that it doesnt get that good until the Kumagawa/minus arc and that its a bit all over the place it does a great job of tastefully parodying the meta aspects of the shonen genre while also excelling at them in its own right.

I've been a part of that god forsaken fandom since... What, 2016? I'm part of the extremely small minority of people that unironically enjoyed fnaf world back when it was the end of the series. I was on all the different hype trains of Sister Location, the upcoming "pizza tycoon" game, and even Security Breach! Hell, at some point I dare say I was a bit of a loremaster. I get into heated arguments about the exact number of distinct characters present in the series. Golden Freddy isn't the same as Withered Golden Freddy and I'm the only person on this planet that cares! As I'm typing this comment I have AO3 open in an adjacent tab where I'm writing my own fixed version of Security Breach. I'm under 20 and this series still makes me feel like a complete fucking boomer with how much I go around complaining that back in my day the lore and the story and the gameplay and the character design was just so much better. And I don't even like horror! Scary things make it hard for me to sleep at night! Truly it doesn't get more pathetic than this. Well, I _could_ admit to thinking the robot wolf is hot but that's a shame I wouldn't bring on myself even in a Fither video's comment section.

Gundam Wing is probably up there in terms of unintentionally hilarious. In one scene in particular a guy is cornered by hyenas, yells at them, the hyenas run away, then he says weak enemies are boring, then he screams at the sky. Admittedly it popularized a genre of anime that just devolved into "anime twink has emotional problems"
Animation from countries outside of America/Canada and Japan. It's always fascinating seeing other countries varying levels of animation quality. You can get some good quality stuff like Padak or The House or some laughable bad or downright weird stuff like Joshua and the Promised Land, Sailor and the 7 balls or any anti American films like Siavash's Secret. Saberspark and Steve Reviews are my two favorite channels that discuss foreign animation.
Xenoblade 2 rides a very weird line for me between "enjoyable schlock" territory and unironic, sincere enjoyment. Weird but fascinating game. I think its case gets helped by the fact that the second half is genuinely a compelling story, even if it takes a long time to get there. In the meantime you’re stuck with writing that exists at a nexus of total sincerity, lack of self-awareness, and juvenile horniness that feels like it came from the mind of an particularly talented teenage boy. I totally understand and respect why a lot of people just bounce right off this stuff, but for me that shameless earnestness (and ofc the really cool setting, soundtrack, and environments) is enough for me to put up with the more facepalm-worthy stuff until it really takes off.
I believe Monlith was extremely understaffed during that game's development; Xenoblade X was being made and they were helping with BOTW. From what I know the game's chapters were written by different people who weren't really in contact with each other. Which is why the tone bounces from Xenoblade's typical peak fiction to your average shonen anime. Same with the art, which is why you have amazing designs mixed in with Pyra and Rex being on the front page of google for "bad design."

@@willd1790I’d say the story gets good the moment you get Morag as a party member. Once chapter 4 is over, all hell breaks loose. So technically right before the midpoint. Plus, 1 though 4 have really good moments too. Vandham, Akhos, Malos and Nia are all massive highlights.

The guy talking about Taimanin Asagi unlock an old memory for me. I watched it when I was a young teenager and only remembered being insanely confused on what I was watching because there would be an intense sex scene of someone getting goatse by a tentacle and will then instantly switch to somber cryptic flash back that is played super dramatically. I have never rewatched it, but it will always stick in my mind as some of the most confusing shit I’ve ever watched
I'll vouch for both games. They are strategy games with these almost button rhythm gameplay, and the story is just so funny. Like two of my favorite jokes are that Megaman and Zero are DEATHLY afraid of anything spike-like because in Megaman games spikes are instant death but no one else understands why these metal robots would think touching something vaguely sharp is a problem. And Ryu from Street Fighter(there are multiple Ryu's in these games) keeps telling people they can do his spinning kick to fly for a bit and everyone keeps telling him that normal people CAN'T DO THAT!
You say "What if the Investigation Team ended up in One Piece", I have an arguably even stupider idea stuck in my head, "What if Conan the Barbarian replaced Luffy as the main character of One Piece?" Because since a lot of Conan stories involve him being a pirate I thought about the concept and decided that if Conan ended up in One Piece, he would legitimately probably end up becoming the Pirate King (assuming he can train to be just as strong as the characters in that universe of course).
Drakengard 3 is peak schlock for me. I can't really sumerize my feelings on the game in anything less that an entire essay but it is just such a fascinating game to me. The game ended up Gaslighting me into liking it. Same situation with Drakengard 1.
I played a lot of dogshit games growing up; a byproduct of not really having anyone around who knew what ‘good games’ were, and just being left to pick out whatever had the coolest box at Walmart, or Gamestop, if we were feeling fancy. In terms of schlock, though… probably the genre of Princess Maker life sim games, if I had to pick. Something about trying to balance all these different game elements as best you can, and also the wide array of possible endings once can achieve, it just lights something up in my lizard brain. The true wish fulfillment is getting endless attempts at figuring out the ideal wrok-life balance!
Another one I've really been enjoying is FE Awakening and Engage. People critique the overly simple characters and basic story but I kind of love them. These absolute goobers getting into wacky conversations like Tharja trying to act normal, or Alcryst trying to party. Sometimes I just burst out laughing from the supports and I just find them very fun, and Awakening's crazy growths lets you build up pretty much whoever you want and let them rampage and I find that pretty fun
I mean I love them both but they really aren't shlock. Engage's story is eh but it's gameplay makes up for it and Awakening just has good story and characters that loud fans get weird about because of the style.
@@nahte123456 imma be real with you, the moment I heard the game's opening theme song that plays before you even get the title screen, I knew Engage was gonna have some shlock, there's just no denying it. You can't say the concept of rings with the souls of characters from past games that make you stupid OP when you use them and you shout "Emblem Engage" when you power up isn't inherently shlocky. It feels like FE's take on a sentai show, and it's glorious. I fucking adore a lot of that shlock because it is just a fun romp with some good emotional beats. I was definitely getting excited and happy when shit happened in the story, and the gameplay is very fun, in part because you get to do wacky crazy shit that makes you feel powerful. Even if most of the characters aren't deep, I can still find something to enjoy there. Like Lapis, the girl from a poor farm village who's abnormally strong because she eats rare potatoes only grown in her village, and hunts bears regularly because they would try to eat her crops. She's also incredibly resourceful at making almost anything out of complete junk, she can make traps, toys, and even exercise equipment. Despite all of that on top of winning a tournament and becoming a retainer to royalty, she still thinks little of herself and is rather embarrassed about her social class while also being bad at hiding it from others. She's probably one of the nicest characters in the game and that's saying something. I also personally loved Awakening and Fates but I know looking back I was still a preteen/teenager when I played them first. Not to say there's nothing of value in these games but they require a different mindset to fully enjoy.
i typically only eat the peels of the banana. the insides are really mushy and unappealing to me, not to mention they're too sweet for me. i think the peels are actually the best way to enjoy a banana

I'll second Fire Emblem Fates, it's a massive nostalgia game for me from my childhood and I can't not like it even though it's trash. Also have to suggest Danganronpa 3, watched the dub immediately after beating 1 and 2 and refusing to complete 1.5 and it was a RIDE.
I guess my favorite is Professional/theater wrestling, especially watching with my older brother and dad. It basically live- action anime This is more good popcorn comfort food more then anything, but lupin the third is just “I outsmart your outsmarting” the show. I said it still genuine good then alot of these examples, but it can get pretty silly. Also I love face-off. It also a live action anime(mainly from the 1980s to 1990s). Also love YTPs, it cool and funny to see what people can do with edits, but it also reminds of the times my brother and I would do crappy edits.
It's very strange I got top comment talking about a game I haven't played. I guess Yiik just has that specific feel to it. I'll definitely play it at some point, it's just one of those things that you really need to be in the mood to do.
As someone who played YIIK and ended up enjoying it more than I thought I would, you really need to go into it knowing the Post-Modern elements ahead of time. A lot of what seems like horrible writing (such as the inconsistent dates or spelling of character names) are part of the larger theme of Alex making up and removing events from the game to fit his narrative of forcing himself to be a hero protagonist. Hellkrai has a really good video series analyzing the story of YIIK and what the different parts of it means. There's obviously still a lot of flaws to it, and the target audience for YIIK is very small, but I definitely think the game is underrated and isn't bad as a lot of people make it out to be. The game also has unironically one of the best communities I've seen online.

My favourite schlock is unironically SAO. This is mostly nostalgia but i distinctly remember the days when i would buy the light novels of SAO progressive and make fanfics. Reading it again after realising how bad it is was a truly magical experience

Even stuff that many might consider guilty pleasures like Friday the 13th parts 4 and 6 I just find to be solid horror movies. Danganronpa is pretty cringe and is a series that i hold no issue with people bouncing off of. However, i consider it a legitimately good series despite that. The punishments, the ridiculous plot twists, the contrived murder scenes and all the character motivetions just reakly do it for me
One thing I love to do is call something universally considered great a guilty pleasures. The only example of that I can think of at the moment is Code Geass, because there’s so much stupid shit that makes no sense happens, but it’s really fun to watch. I would consider it a good show, but definitely overrated. There’s a couple of other examples, that I can’t think of. The only movie that is “so bad it’s good” is Plan 9 from Outer Space, but I haven’t seen The Room in full yet, and I think the clips are funny.
I always get disappointed when people only talk about the Mata Nui stuff (even if MNOG was really good), because the worldbuilding and writing and stakes immediately shot up once Metru Nui started, and it was intriguing as hell

I don’t have guilty pleasures. That feels like a dumb thing to have. I either like something, or I don’t. I’m not gonna call what I like bad. That makes it sound like there are objectively good things in media, and that there are only certain ways to be good. When are people going to learn that media is largely subjective? Like, for Sonic, I don’t have to make up excuses for why I love it. Sonic Adventure 2 is one of my favorite games. Am I supposed to feel ashamed about that? I like it because I think it’s good. I wouldn’t like it and still play it if it was something I looked down on. Especially since Sonic is in an unfair position where people will make fun of it no matter what, unless it’s Classic Sonic.
I'm surprised it took so long for someone to say this. I feel like the idea of guilty pleasures is weird, because it assumes entertainment can be objectively good or bad, which I don't think is true. I feel like it's more of a front to prevent being made fun of or having to defend oneself for liking things that are generally poorly regarded or unpopular.

I think my personal favorite example of this is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone on PS1. That game is complete garbage and I enjoy ever minute of it.
Fither watching Ex-Aid? Based. I figured someone was going to mention Rider if I didn't but didn't think it'd be the man himself. I'd definitely recommend something like W or OOOs next. Or even something more recent like Zero-One or the currently airing Geats, it's almost over.
idk if it exactly counts as schlock but drakengard is my favorite game that i will never play. from the mindless gameplay to the batshit insane story, which includes you killing child soldiers in a level where your ally is an open pedophile, it is one of the most interesting games of all time. the craziest part is that with yoko taro at the helm, everything about the game that can be considered bad or schlocky may have very well been intentional. this is without even mentioning the multiple insane endings or how it somehow spawned nier, a series which is almost universally acclaimed.
Resident Evil Operation Raccoon City. The game is objectively bad, but I think about it fondly. If you told me before I played it that an eastern European studio managed to get the Resident Evil license to make this game, then I would have believed you by the end.The game mechanics are floaty 3d person console shooter jank, but fascinating jank with interesting ideas which occasionally work together well and usually don't. You get to mow down zombies in a fantastic storm of gore, so it's fun in the moment anyway. The characters are all evil and despicable. They aren't complex, or tragic, or bad in a funny way. They're just evil mercenaries covering up for a mega corporation. At the end of the game you meet Leon Kennedy who had no reason to be involved in this story, but he is a popular character who was in Raccoon city, so they had to put him in it. You have to choose whether to kill or spare him even though you have been murdering police and US soldiers for the entire game, and two of the four other teammates side against you because every 2010s video game requires that you kill your teammates because??? The best gun in the game is a Thompson. The game is confusing and bad, but it's unique enough that it made itself a special place in my mind. There is nothing else that feels like it. It also has dangerous women in tight suits and facemasks.
My high school freshman year, our telecommunications teacher made us watch hackers like a week before school ended, and this movie had a scene where Angelina Jolie was topless.
I think I see Gundam Seed Destiny as pretty schlocky. The first half of the show is pretty solid, but the more the cast of Seed become active players in the plot, the worse the show gets. Didn't really need so much screentime for the idol imposter if she doesn't... you know, do anything until the last 5 episodes of the show. But 3/4 of the OP's are pretty good, Athrun largely stays one of the best characters of the Cosmic Era, and the machines themselves get plenty of good action.
I can't think of too many guilty-pleasure games, off the top of my head, because I don't feel guilty about enjoying them, and I tend to know and agree with WHY they're flawed or bad. But GOW Ragnarok is definitely one of them, because it contains everything I hate about modern western AAA games, yet I found myself having fun with it at times, enough to keep me going to Elfheim. The boating sections that let me explore off the beaten path, and the player feedback from killing enemies was satisfying on a purely visceral level, even if it lacked the mechanical depth and cohesion I tend to look for in action games (or even just adventure games). I still can't stand the unskippable walking/siddling/climbing sections and automated moments that make repeat playthroughs more tedious than they need to be (especially when, at that point, I'll have already experienced the story and only want to play through the game for gameplay reasons), but for some reason, either due to playing the previous game and knowing what to expect, or because some of these segments have been shortened, kept to a minimum and/or sped-up (e.g. Kratos and Atreus embark and disembark from their boat much faster now, so we don't have to linger on an unskippable scene every time I want to go from place to place). It's still a game I feel guilty about enjoying, especially when I disliked the previous instalment for a lot of the same issues, but unlike with the 2018 game, I'm at least not begging for the game to end halfway through. As for shlock I genuinely enjoy, Future Diary is up there. I know it's bad, I know the writing is trash, and the characters are ridiculous, but I just can't help myself. I love the shit it out of it. It's so much fun to watch. I'll happily revel in its bullshit.
Re5 is good though, it’s got some over the top shit like the boulder punching part but overall it’s a great game (every single RE game got something goofy like that though)
For me it's the Anime Kuzu no Honkai and Domestic Girlfriend. To this day I belive that they are great anime with unique message but everyone hates it for some reason. If there is anyone that knows more shows like that please let me know.
Maybe it don't count but I love mediocre media in general, and tend to gravitate towards it more than popular things. There's something interesting about the mediocre that you just can't find in the popular. A lot of unique ideas get tested, and usually fail, in the things rated 4.5 - 6.5 than anything 7 and above. I love looking into those types of things, and seeing what went wrong/right.
I remember liking transformers 1 more than the nightmare before Christmas when I watched them one after the other. My friends still haven't forgiven me. And yu-gi-oh GX dub is my favourite anime.
Damn it, I saw this community post and I REALLY should've thrown Black Souls into it. It's a soulslike made in RPGmaker with... let's call it suggestive themes. I think what I love about it so much is that it uses its inital schlocky appeal to completely win you over, before turning completely around and gutpunching you, over and over and over again. And then he made a second game, which continues to gutpunch you over and over again. And then he made DLC for that second game, which gives you viking-style blood wings (look it up, it's brutal). And the gameplay for both of these games is amazing, with Black Souls 2's ingenious weapon-switch combat system being my favorite system in any RPG, even beating out the likes of SMT. 12/10 would absolutely reccomend, especially if you can tolerate offensive H scenes/humor, like in a Rance game.
Biggest guilty pleasure has to be miraculous ladybug. The writing bounces between pretty good every now and then, and garbage most of the time. It's also easily the cringiest thing i've seen, The office doesn't really get anything out of me but miraculous makes me consistently pause episodes so i can take a breather from all the cringy shit the protag does. It really is one of those shows you watch mostly because you've already watched 4 seasons and you're hoping the show will get better because it has such high potenital.
I don't know if this could be considered shlock necessarily because parts of it are genuinely amazing (especially the music) but kingdom hearts is so insane. Like just seeing Mickey fight dark monsters with a key shaped sword is worth the price of admission, not to mention the other wild choices this story chooses to make. It's a wild ride and I live it Also I love Shining Nikki and Love Nikki and I think they are genuinely good as well, but could be considered shlock because the concept of "dress up game but there is plot" is absolutely insane, especially considered how messed up that plot can be. Like watch the infinity girl music video and then watch the story trailers they released when the global server for Shining Nikki first opened and you have an idea about the tonal whiplash the game has. I love it and I wouldn't change anything (okay, false I would make it more free player friendly and less gacha oriented, but that's less to do with the game and more to do with how the mobile industry works in general) I am a nikkiverse fan until the day I die lol
Personally for me Baki definitely scratches this itch for. Things just don’t make sense and things just get so ridiculous and sometimes can be straight bad but still is really enjoyable
The Monument Monsters. It's about these rocks from space that grow and topple over then grow. I like cheesy old sci-fi in general but something about that one makes me pop it in the Bluray player when I can't think of anything to watch.
A guitly pleasure of mine is the ghost stories dub I can't help but laugh at the sheer absurdity of the lines and its just so ridiculous to take seriously
The Kingdom Hearts series is a guilty pleasure of mine. I *love* the gameplay, but the story makes me question life. The overall story is simple, but seeing everything happen is just cognitive dissonance the video game series. I love it with my soul.
everything is shlock to people these days, you cannot enjoy anything genuinely apparently, or its cringe or some other buzzword people will use to insult you.
Huniepop (both games) are seriously my favorite indie games ever created. The girls are believable, funny and all charming in their own way (apart from Momo, i don't want to do another Kitty Quiz in my life) The writing is hilarious Art is top notch Music is bussing And gameplay? Brother, this porn game proved to me that you can make porn games feel actually engaging and that match 3 games can be actual masterpieces. Huniepop deserves every single piece of attention it ever got. Damn that game is genuinely good
I think the funniest part is recognizing Kira Buckland was in the game and memeing on that. Lady went from this to Danganronpa 2 to V3 to NieR to Madoka Magica to Stone Ocean Talk about a carreer

Probably SDR2 (Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair). Although I'm not the biggest fan of Danganronpa anymore, that game in particular still holds a very special place for me. It was something that I played a lot during one of the worst periods of my life, and I hyperfixated on it heavily for years. There's just something about that game that I still really enjoy, even if I don't like the series much anymore. I just love pretty much everything about the game. The music is great, I love the beach setting, and I really like how the game does the cliche "game inside a game" shtick. The last trial itself is still really cool, and there's one scene in particular with all of the characters going "why don't we just stay in this game forever?" at the end that still gets to me a bit. I still love all of the characters, and I find the ending with Hajime realizing the truth about himself to still be one of the best moments in Danganronpa. I know the game is really dumb and has a lot of stupid moments (some of the trials in particular are really bad), but the game is so nostalgic for me that I can't help but still love it. I feel "guilty" about enjoying it because I don't really like Danganronpa anymore and I know it's technically bad and I can't exactly explain why I like it so much, but I just do lol
