Emily, many years ago when I was still young and a student, a friend let me borrow her silver flute for a while, she did not play. I caught onto it very quickly because I play several other instruments. I took the flute often into the forest to play and to my amazement I saw deer being attracted to the sound and come very close. Then I tried the same with horses, playing the flute up on the ridge that separates the Bay Area in Berkeley California from the different landscape and the horse ranches of the back country. Standing by the fences on the ridge with my flute at least a dozen horses would come up from the valley below and stand very close. I felt like a pied piper for hoofed animals, such as deer and horses.
@@-God_IS_Real- Good question! I had a mother who was very controlling for no reason and decided I should play something like guitar instead. Now I play them both! Happy playing :)
As a soprano and alto saxophonist learning the flute, I'm curious whether your point was made or not. It's been half a year now, what's your verdict? I definitely underestimated the flute, personally. Also the B key vs octave key hurts me when switching back and forth between the two. I can now never quite remember what my left thumb is supposed to be doing on either instrument! The flute sure is a lot smaller and lighter and easier to disassemble though. Can practice anywhere, even in the car or bathroom!
My guitars burnt up in a fire, so I bought a flute. Flute burnt up in a house fire . Now my brother gave me another flute. Now its game on. No more fires gonna stop me
I used to play the flute when I was in college and stopped right after I graduated. Now, I'm trying to relearn everything. Kinda forgot the everything since it's been so long. Thank you for the tutorial. It was very helpful!
I played in middle and high school and was pretty good, not bragging, just telling it like it is/was. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a flute for years after graduating, so my ability to play diminished. Finally, got a flute and was able to play at a beginner level. Now, I am trying to relearn and regain my ability to play well. I will be using this site! Thank you!
HUGE TIP FOR ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS I'm a complete beginner (just got my flute 45 minutes ago) and something I had trouble with is making a sound. I struggled for quite a while until I played around with the angle. I was angling the lip plate so it was at a 90/80 degree angle and I could only get tiny sounds. But then I put the lip plate flush with my lips (basically kiss the lip plate and then pull it slightly back so your lips aren't touching it) and that makes it world's easier
Today is my 57th birthday. I have received a beautiful flute as a gift. I took a semester of flute as a child, but that was so long ago that I have forgotten everything. I am here to begin anew.
😂 I was in the middle of a Bosch rerun and paused it when I thought randomly that 💡I should learn to play an instrument! Just turned 52, never played an instrument, don’t have a flute and I’m here too lol.
Good Rhythm is always great to have! Welcome to the community and take a look at all of my videos and the playlist may guide you a little bit more! Happy practicing!
I am in a similar position,A drummer and percussionist.I just bought a flute of a mate of mine.I already practice bass guitar and looking at flute as well.Oh well suppose it keeps me out of trouble I suppose.
Hi shimmer, my daughter is the opposite, she's been learning trombone and now wants to learn flute.. do you think she will find playing the flute easily?
@@melissascheffer522 They're not exactly close together, but it would be easier from trombone to flute than something like cello to flute. Also flute was like my 8th instrument, so I was accustomed to learning how to play an instrument. I found it relatively easy
@@Nixplaystrombone funny actually, I’m switching from a cello to a flute- this transition is so incredibly hard for me.. I never really wanted to stop playing the cello but that’s just how it ended up. Now I am just beginning the flute and can almost barely make a sound most of the time..
@@Nixplaystrombone thanks I’m gonna need it, and yes it’s very hard.. I don’t have very good breath control so that’s something I really need to work on.
Just bought the course and my flute is arriving tomorrow. I can't wait!! Thank you so much for working so hard to provide resources for those of us who can't really afford music lessons/ don't have the time to attend one. 😁🎶
Can you post a beginner lesson like this on how to hold a piccolo? I've looked everywhere on how to hold the piccolo. Just a five minute video would be so appreciated. Your lessons are so smooth and natural. Thank you.
It’s been 3 years for me 😭it’s my old band teacher who made older kids in the grade teach us and that obviously made most things I did wrong. The teacher didn’t even try teaching us she just made sure we could make a sound with it then left 🥲
I have been playing the clarinet since I was 8 and stopped at 17 when I went to college. Now I’m 30 (very scary lol) and I want to play the flute because my brother and sister play it and I’m the odd one out and it’s such a beautiful instrument! It’s so hard to produce a sound!
How exciting and wonderful! I am not a beginner, more a devoted intermediate; however, I look forward to seeing this series and passing it along to students who would benefit from it - and I'm betting I'll glean some knowledge, too. Thank you for creating this!
I am amazed and shocked how emily is the only person who explains and teaches so well unlike other people we met. My sis is 6 and alr know the basics of the flute thanks to you so u deserve my subscription thanks!
!!! These parts are only for if you happen to know parts before it, such as reason in following your book directions !!! And yes, these are in order. 0:01 - Head Joint and making sound 2:25 - Assembling your flute 4:20 - Holding the flute 6:20 - Rhythms, Beat Counts, and Time signatures. (This much can be a little over whelming, may want to take a break in between these lesson timings) 7:12 - Treble Clef, lines on Treble, and positioning #2 11:06 - B Note. Another comment may appear later, I’m a lazy kid sorry so part 2 comment later :]
Thank you ma'am, you helped me A LOT!!! I used to play in middle school band as a beginner and this was an absolute great way to refresh and learn a little more.
What a great intro lesson. I used to be a Soprano and Alto sax and bassoon player in college many years ago. I decided to pick up a flute from a pawn shop for $25, took it apart and did a COA on it, and now I'm trying to learn how to play it properly. One thing these lessons never really cover for adults is "what to do with it?", I'm just not quite sure how to practice for a recital without a symphonic band or woodwind ensemble to meet with. I suppose it varies, but it sure it hard to find a way to, say, play campfire guitar songs on a flute :/
hello! i wanted to tell you this really helped me alot, in middle school i played flute (im in high school now and forgot all about the flute). i came across my flute and was like "OMG i wanna learn again" so i looked up beginners Flute Tut and boom i saw you. it really made me remember alot so thank you.
Ty. I'm almost 40 and found one at a pawn shop and have always wanted to learn. . Your tips and tricks really help. Love the way you explain everything. Understood it very well.
I just bought my first flute today and am so blessed to have found your video to introduce me to this beautiful instrument. Thank you, have a blessed day.
@@flutechannel You have helped so much! I'm even more motivated to stop smoking now. I've had it all summer, but never really learned to blow it.... Do you have any tips on how to clean flutes? 🙃
@@flutechannel ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8XzPxQxxbSI.html I found it. 🤗 thanks!.... but my flute was given to me and didn't come with a rag. I'll have to get one, but thank you. I will get back to practicing now. 👌
I am having a flute delivered right now. I am so excited to see your description on your video. Thank you so much for your care and dedication to flute players, veterans and new beginners.
I got (wrongfully) expelled so spending the year re-learning a bunch of old instruments I havent had the privilege to access since I was in high-school! I got this bargain flute today and within an hour of getting back home and this video, I was able to produce sound consistently! aaa I feel so happy! Music is everything to me and there is no greater pleasure than playing!
As Harold Bennett's great-granddaughter, I played clarinet for a while but never had the fire for music burn in me as he did. My eight-year-old daughter does, however, and she's chosen to follow in his footsteps with the flute. You'll be teaching me so that I can guide and correct her practice at home. Her great-great-grandfather would be very proud.
Nice to meet you Mrs. Emily! I am 35 years old and I have been playing the flute off and on since I was 17 years old; a junior in high school. I taught myself how to play because I have always loved the flute so much and I was DYING to be able to play it for myself. I have never taken flute lessons until today by watching your video on RU-vid! I am in between a beginner and an intermediate level right now and I love to play Disney songs, Christian church songs and Christmas songs!!! 😁😁😁❤️🎶❤️ Thank you so very much for sharing your helpful videos with everyone and I hope that God will richly bless you! Cheers! ~ His Majesty King Timothy Daniel Leyba
I really love your tutorials. I began playing flute in 6th grade (2003). I continue to play often and practice with your lessons. Awesome. Keep up the great work/teaching/playing.
I played the flute when I was younger and played all the way up to Conservatory Grade 8, then life interfered. I just ordered a flute from ebay and we'll see how rusty I am. I'm excited to get back into it, and hopefully the flute is a decent one.
Hi Amelie nice to see this from german here. I learn again since i am 21 years old. Oha, vor long time before. 37 year oha. But my social work was long time and my two sons my life and now they are 15, 25 and i try to learn again more. Thanks. I like you channel very, very much. Fine. Greetings from Beate
I have asthma and COPD. Someone told me I need to play a wind instrument to strengthen my lungs. The saxophone requires way more wind than I'm able to produce so I've decided to go with the flute which uses more gentle breathing.
I play for nearly 50yrs, just got my wife one. I don't have a book for her, so I'm sending her to your site. I hope she can learn from you. I told her the most important thing is a good clean sound, all the rest will fall into place.
thank you for this. I particularly like how you teach us to make a noise before putting the flute together. I had heard that making a proper noise was the hardest part. I'll do that from now on before putting the instrument together. (turns out its not that difficult when you know how it works)
Amelie thank you so much! I'm a beginner and these flute lessons really teach me. Now that i'm getting better today, I took 1 straight hour of practice watching your videos over and over. I love your channel! btw im new here!
I'm here as a person who just passed Grade 2! I'm a member of the school band and in going too tutor some new kids in my school!! Just looking at how I should teach them! 🎶💕
Got a flute for Christmas cause I wanted to learn and I just spent the past 20 minutes trying to figure out how to open the case lmao so definitely need this
Thank you so much, when I first got my flute I was so excited until my brother told me I wouldn’t be able to play it for a while, so I looked up this video, and now I’m able to play well! I appreciate this tutorial.
this is my first time with a flute I got it from school tysm this helped a lot because I couldn’t play in in school for a week because of coronavirus (I got it but now I’m better
Same here..my first lesson was when i was in 5th grade..n he came all the way from UK to Brunei to teach English.but im so lucky to learn playing flute alongside him
Can you please make a video of how to do the eighth note correctly on the flute? I been practicing the eighth note two weeks and it don’t sound correct
@@mrjilian07 I do believe it's because she's tightening her lips. I've been playing flute for 3 years, and I'm still learning about that so I'm not entirely sure
I've always wanted to play the flute as a child but wasn't allowed / my parents couldn't afford it. I recently got myself an ocarina as a cheaper option to see if I could even stick to learning an instrument before spending several hundred euros on a flute haha but it's going pretty well and I am very excited to get my first flute and then I will definitely watch this video again 😁
I really want to learn how to play the flute, I can only play the recorder but I enjoy it so much since I was 12. This year I'm graduating from college and I hope I can get a job and buy my first flute soon :')
