I show you how to plant a long row of asparagus crowns. I cover depth, fertilizing, planting, mulching and the importance of phosphorous for helping the roots establish. Asparagus is worth the effort as they will produce as perennials for 15-20 years.

Is there particular reason you did not use Trench method? Where you dig 2 trenches side by side and place your Crowns in center let roots spread in both trenches.

Greetings from Puerto Rico, I just got to see your video today because I was looking for information about how to plant asparagus. I have two questions, first, what kind of mycorrhizal fungi are you using? Second, what would happen if I plant 20 crowns in an 8' by 32" bed? I ask because I just bought 20 crowns and the space I have is 8 feet long by 33 inches wide.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 2 года назад
I dont add mycorrhizal fungi. It really is in the soil. My fertilizer might have it at time but I dont look for it. Any organic granular is fine. Asparagus can live for 15 years and the root system grows. Over time you might have to thin them. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualified purchases. I live in New York Queens zone 6b. Can I grow asparagus under or near a fig tree? Would it be a good companion? Could you also please tell me which type of asparagus is the tastiest for my zone? When I buy asparagus from this store, they are thick and stringy and very hard to chew, so I clean them with the potato peeler. When I boil them, they are also stringy and unpleasant to swallow. I never ate a freshly harvest before so I don't know if that is a common thing or it is just a specific type that is like that. oh, I am planning to do a no till garden and occasionally adding leafes and wood chips. I want to create an organic garden.

In nature Plant get their food/nutrients from soil so they need to be apart. In your garden you pamper them well more than they could imagine. You mentioned 1 ft in between plants, how much should be distance between rows? If my raised bed is like 4*12 feet. Can I plant 3 rows? May be plants are staggered in rows? From did you buy Asparagus roots? How much is cost range?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 3 года назад
So I cram stuff in and experiment all the time. The row is really for walking. They get massive when you are letting them fern out. The crowns do expand over the years. I would recommend 4 feet if you are doing long ground rows for tending reasons. I bought roots but I also mixed in seed starts I started in January. For your bed, since it is a 4 ft width... and you dont need to walk in it, You could do 3 rows. Worst case is you divide and have to move them years down the line which is a good problem to have. I planted my asparagus crowns a few weeks/months ago (need to look in my journal for exact timeframe), and little asparagus have come up. YAY! A few of the spears grew into fronds (right word?) with little berries on them. I am assuming those are the female plants. Should I pull those up or leave them alone? Year 3 was great but at the end of the season I noticed bugs in the soil but with a ruptured disk couldn't get down to inspect. The next year not one asparagus came up. Started more asparagus from seed and threw them in another bed along with my pansys. I just noticed that the asparagus is up so will harvest probably in a few days. This is year 3 I think. I do it just for fun and it really is amazing. I may have to move my pansy's since they were just a fluke anyway. They come back every year. They were started from seed also and didn't really think they would make it so I just threw them into the bed and figured that they would either make it or not :) Thank you for your videos!!! Wish I had that much space to grow in.

Man, Gary, you’re living the dream. I can’t wait to see what your homestead will look like when everything is growing at full production. My wife and I just have our backyard but we’d like a few acres of land when we get to be in our fifties in twenty years.

Great video! Would it work well in containers? I don’t have any room to make a bed.

Thanks for the video. So when the asparagus shoots out and is cut for eating, does that affect the plant?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 5 лет назад
Well not mature root systems. But if you harvest all the shoots you can have issues. You want some to mature and get 3 or 4 feet tall and fern out. They will bring energy to the roots so to speak and get things ready for next. year. Check out my new Amazon Influencer's Shop. Anything you buy on Amazon helps The Rusted Garden when using my link. Ill be putting what I use in videos there for 2019. It is all set up by categories. Thanks. www.amazon.com/shop/garypilarchiktherustedgarden
