It is wisdom to ask God to help us discern what is of Him and what is not. Hey Debbie, I appreciate your warning. I can tell it really does come from genuine concern not one of criticism. The book of Acts and 1 Cor explains a lot about the gift of tongues and one's prayer language. In 1 Cor especially, Paul draws a distinction between utterances in tongues in public meetings meant to be "interpreted" under the unction of the Holy Spirit into the native tongue of the congregation present. He also shows that another purpose of tongues besides delivering a message from God to His people in 1 Cor 14:2, that it is spoken to God and unknown to men. Paul says further that one is speaking mysteries from himself to God. So we see that in one case, someone is delivering a message from God to men that needs to be interpreted and in another case that one is speaking mysteries directly to God. 1 Cor 12:10 even points out that some believers have the gift of "kinds of tongues." Romans 8:26 even talks about how the Spirit of God helps us when we don't know how to pray with groanings (deep sighs) which cannot be uttered. Spiros Zodhiates, the late-great New Testament Greek scholar defined this phrasing as "deep sighs that cannot be articulated with language and words." As in all things, the Holy Spirit in you can teach you to discern the safety of what you're hearing or who you receive from. The Apostle John even says in one of his letters that the "anointing" has taught them, the anointing as a pseudonym of the Holy Spirit. On a personal note, I will say that this "baptism of the Holy Spirit" is so vital for a believer in Jesus. John the Baptist said his mission was to baptize with water but Christ's was to baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire. Jesus told His disciples to tarry until the Holy Spirit fell on them in the upper room, describing the Holy Spirit as the Comforter and the Helper. He said they would be emboldened as "witnesses" of the gospel. We see the immediate result of this infilling in Peter's sermon on the day of Pentecost as a transformation. When Cornelius and his household received the Holy Spirit, the Apostles recognized this as sign from God that salvation had come to the Gentiles and wasn't just for the Jews. One of my questions to believers opposed to the baptism of the Holy Spirit is this: why would we continue the baptism of John and cease the baptism of Jesus? Peter said of this baptism that it was prophesied by the Prophet Joel of the last days and that it would usher in the time of "sons and daughters prophesying." We see this time at its infancy in the New Testament church. I hope this helps you know that I'm putting into practice what I've learned from scripture, God's Word. Many blessings!
