Footage from GoPro's that are using factory settings look and sound terrible, yes even the new Hero 9 Black. Just by changing a few things in the menu you can make a dramatic improvement to the quality of your next GoPro video whether you're using a Hero 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9. Call them hacks, or just the settings that GoPro should have started with, I'm pumped to show you how good your action camera footage can be. It's easy to do. Let's go.

13:00 Ah this is something lot of people get confused on with RAW audio. Turning this on does nothing to the audio on the video file, it creates a separate audio file next to the video file. Depending on what you set RAW to, it’ll either do zero processing, or give you a slightly less (over) processed result. You’ll have to sync the audio track in post, which is why I normally don’t recommend it for first timers. Another great video otherwise!
@okletsgo9135
@okletsgo9135 3 года назад
I'm still confused. If I plan on recording a bike ride, and I don't want the wind to ruin the experience of the video, why would I turn Wind Reduction from auto to off? It seems counterintuitive, but I'm a beginner, so could you maybe explain this to me? Thank you. I also bought a wind muff that covers the entire camera.
@DaveLisowski
@DaveLisowski 3 года назад
@@okletsgo9135 I'm just now seeing your comment, and you may have figured it out by now, but the electronic wind reduction doesn't sound great. It cuts the audio in weird ways and can make it sound very "thin" or even robotic. Basically, the methodology in this video is to remove the need for electronic wind reduction by using physical wind reduction (via the mini dead cats he puts on). A lot of the time, the tiny bit of wind noise you'll get with the dead cat on will still sound WAY better than the electronic wind reduction doing its thing.
@okletsgo9135

I do EXACTLY the same settings with the exception of 2 settings: My upper ISO is set only to 400 on super sunny days (I've been pretty happy with that), and on cloudy days, my ISO is 3200, but I use a white balance of Native. Other than that, you nailed it regarding what settings seem best. Staying AWAY from Sharpening makes a WORLD of difference! Great Video!

You are exactly right. Old 120 film (6cm x 6cm negatives) of the past never looked over-sharpened, because it was simply impossible. Now with digital, it's good that we can back off on the over-sharpening these cameras do.
@erikstijnen
@erikstijnen 3 года назад
I appreciate this video very much although one thing: the white balance setting on 5500k is seriously not ok for me! Colors are simply too warm and white is not white. White balance on auto, together with Flat colours (and no sharpening) gives me the most realistic result. This gives you the best output for processing afterwards.
@TheOnlyJohnAbraham
@TheOnlyJohnAbraham 4 года назад
I may be mistaken but I'm pretty sure the raw audio track setting only affects the separate WAV file that's generated while the wind setting only affects the audio baked into the video file. I keep the wind reduction on and set my raw audio to low and choose which track to use based on the situation.

They do have a wind foam case for it, that way your gopro still looks nice at the end of the day, it does great with wind, and you can just take it off and put other cases on it also. (I have a gopro hero 8) 15:00 The case also costs like $8 and protects it too.
@softbreeze941

Foam acts really poorly against fur which is basically transforming the force of the air movement into moving physical hair furs. Foam just has tunnels for the wind to spread away from mic but most of the wind can still get trough in windy conditions. It might work well with just the wind of riding the bike but when there already is heavy wind on top of the mountain the fur is the deal!

@Northern Amauta 24fps would be cinematic with a 1/24 or 1/48 shutter speed but that doesn't work well with the HyperSmooth stabilisation that you generally want to be on when capturing a bike video. In addition, the lens used in an action camera won't produce "cinematic" footage as everything is in focus and there is no depth of field. The bad pixely image is due to RU-vid's compression, not the original footage of the camera. @@slinkytrips Any hint where I can find more about your statement? The one that 30Hz is the native clock and everything else is interpolated? Sounds very strange to me.

That has to do which codec you get from youtube: avc1 or VP09. Basically, it means that when you have VP09 you get a better image on youtube. To get this you've got two options. Or you need to get more subscribers and views or upload in 1440p or above. I had the same problem with my videos as well and since I've uploaded in 1440p I automatically get VP09. I found that when exporting my footage from Adobe Premier editing the RU-vid 4k export settings from 1 pass to 2 pass render gave much better results. 1 pass works fine if the footage is stationary, however when you are flying over dirt and past trees the 2 pass method does better and your footage doesn’t end up looking like mud. Also RU-vid compresses footage more in 1080p than in 4k, so watching the same footage in 1080 will be more pixilated than watching the same footage at 4k simply due to how much compression RU-vid applies.

Great video! My question is about Quark Stabilizer $199 vs Horizon Leveling on Go Pro 9 (free) vs Max Lens Mod ($69.99 with GoPro Subscription) Any thoughts? What are the pros and cons of using which for mountain biking. Thank you for all your great work.
@jamaliciousben
@jamaliciousben 4 года назад
Horizon leveling (at least in my experience) is limited not because it doesn't do a good job but because it forces you to shoot in linear mode and if you're wanting to capture POV action with a gopro wide or superview is going to produce a much better shot. I'm hoping the Max Lense Mod will allow us to turn on horizon leveling but provide a wider field of view. Fingers crossed! If it doesn't work as well as hoped I'll be getting the stabilizer too.

24fps actually IS pretty close to what our eyes see, I mean its not like you can compare cameras to eyes anyway since "we dont see in fps" but IF you do.. 24/25 is the way to go, especially with the motionblur it produces if you got the shutterspeed right.

Instead of all these Wide and Superview settings, I Wish GoPro had a Setting for 50mm Focal Length with Shallow Depth of field option (minimum F1.8, ideally F1.4 or F1.2) This would make it a Camera you can use for any Professional Shoot. The New iPhones and Samsungs have this feature already, so I think its time GoPro caught up.

Just don’t shoot in 5k if you use a IPad for editing. However the settings are awesome. But 5k will not down load to iPad unless you use the camera WIFI and it will shrink your video to 4K anyways. Great settings though. Love the videos.

Not sure about the wind noise off suggestion. On a motorbike it sounds shockingly bad when wind reduction is turned off. Even with foam wind blocker shields. Will try the rest of the video settings. 👍

What I love is on certain studio shoots some producers have Panny Varicam for main angles then goPro's for extra cutaways and some people get all worked up because the GoPro won't match whats shot with a 35,000 dollar camera. Having said that...that wasn't a bear...that was a SQUATCH! Nice multi-tasking...navigating trail while commentating

Ok so I'm riding my motorcycle in standard mode with wind setting to Auto. Beautiful sound like it should. So then I move to Custom mode with all your settings (cloudy day, beautiful capture of video footage) The wind was set to Off. It captured the wind to an annoying degree. I mean really bad. So I changed the wind back to auto and no more wind sound. By the way I got the dead cat wind blockers but was not using them at the time of the above recordings. Anyway Thanks again for doing this video. The settings you recommended were spot on.

G'day mate, loved the video. On the audio settings, if you're setting it to "Low" then it will do the wind cutout on the video's audio track but the WAV file will have no editing, so you'll end up with all three microphones tracks. This is my preference and then you can dump out any of the mics that sound wrong or just keep the main mic as mono and convert to stereo or whatever you prefer.

Just a general comment: I started mountain biking two years ago, and I've earned a heck of a lot from you in terms of riding and equipment choice. For example, my son got me a Hero10 so I could prove all that I've been bragging about to him. With your help in this video, I produced some nice colorful film of fast gnarly descents and flying gap jumps that impressed my son, but completely freaked my wife. Thanks for all your confidence building help.

A little tip from downhill skateboarder: don’t leave shutter on auto. Put it to 1/50 or even longer to get directional blur on sides of the footage. It makes footage look much faster

In more controlled lighting situations I'd recommend that too, but for mountain bikers like myself it doesn't work, unfortunately. There's just too much light variance while going through trees.
